I have been a loyal customer for years. Every time I come to Spfld I make a point to grab lunch at Headwest. Today I was very disappointed in the SVC. I ordered my lunch at the kiosh. None of the workers greeted any of the customers. I ordered a sandwich and a fountain. The machine wasn't even on. They turned it on, gave me no indication it could take a bit. I waited over 15 min making me late to get back to work. Didn't offer a substitute. Just ignored my existence. Won't be back if that is how you treat clients now. read more

Been eating here for almost as many years as they've been open and highly recommend that if you're in the Springfield area then you have to get a sandwich from here. I recommend the Italian. I have been visiting the area for years and have always looked forward to Head West, however, now that I live in the area and am able to frequent the establishments more frequently I have found they are wildly unpredictable as to the experience you will have. Sometimes it is amazing and other times absolutely trash! The last visit and the lack of response is the catalyst for this review. I ordered online because the HUGE banner on the website says "Order ahead and save time, ready in 20 minutes, go straight to the register to pick your order up". So, I did. Ordered at 11:24, said to pick up at 12:04 (it's lunch, they are busy, no problem). I show up at 12:08 and do as the website says and walk right to the register past the line and ask for my order...that hasn't been started. Again, they are busy, the guy said they will make mine right away (3 subs, 10 minutes tops) I walked out of the restaurant at 12:35...with a "sorry bout that" and nothing more. I went online to provide feedback via their "contact us" on the website. I not only expressed my concerns about the wait but what's worse, the order was wrong and had a inedible item in the food. I actually ended up sending two messages through that system with ZERO response. I then contacted the local store a week later and asked for the manager or owners email. I then email the provided email and explained the experience. ZERO RESPONSE. If you don't care, I don't care either and I will take my money elsewhere. There are plenty of great sub places in town and myself and my office that eats out daily will NO LONGER give money to an establishment that cares nothing for solid constructive feed back when you and your employees have failed to uphold your end of the deal. When the food is good, it is great...however, when it is bad it is really bad and there is no recourse because management and ownership don't care. read more

Re-using my review from the Jefferson St Headwest, although giving the downtown location a 5/5 because I think it tastes better. Unfortunately not open after 3pm or on weekends :(. Best subs in Springfield! This is a local company that is so much better than the other national brands. Meat and veggies taste fresher since they come from local sources. I always get the #8 ham/turkey/provolone on sweet bread, toasted. You can also add on Kettle chips and soup. I like their broccoli cheddar, although it is a little pricey. read more

Will I ever find the perfect sub sandwich? Well, I can tell you as a full grown man, who can almost grow a mustache; I've never been to China and I'm terrified of heights...but...but... I have found the perfect sub. It's was right here all along. The first time I bit into that warm flaky sweet bread I could feel the worries escape my mind, when I crunched thru the pickle, I felt my transgressions being removed. It was as if with every swallow my fears and anxieties slid down and were dissolved by stomach acids, along with all that glorious meat. I had reached Mecca and it was a hippy sub shop. I have since made many a pilgrimage to Head West, especially the one on Capitol. The ladies are quick, friendly and thorough, true masters of their craft. The bread gets all the attention and with one bite it's understood why, but don't overlook the pickles or the brownies. Springfield is lucky to have HW and there are no ghosts at all. read more

What an excellent menu choice. I went all out and ordered the pick 2 with the Tomato Tortellini and 1/2 Italian (toasted) sandwich. Boom! What a flavor explosion! Thank goodness I walked in at 11:55 because by 12:15 the line was out the door, and I can see why! The staff were/are super friendly and look you in the eye! You don't get much of that anymore. Headed down to the capital for the day and we had nowhere to eat. It had to be walking distance to the Capital building just stumble upon it. Had the pizza sub(pepperoni, marinara, onion and green peppers) toasted. Tastes really good and thought it would have sautéed green peppers but had fresh green peppers. Gotta a tip to skip Subway and try this place instead the other day. Wow, it was like somebody told me to buy Microsoft stock in the seventies, very wise! So by way of example I think that it's great that you can find sandwich chains like Subway in the farthest corners of the country. If you are desperate for healthy in the middle of nowhere you have that. But if you want to be reminded of the difference between the corporate food chain and real, local authentic and independent, come here first and then eat Subway the next day. Your tastebuds will hate you. I had a large veggie sub akin to what I would order at a chain. The bread was lovely and complicated, the vegetables were equally entertaining and the cheese was off of the charts good. America, wake up! This is the answer. For about the same price as a chain sandwich I got something extraordinary and I dropped a couple of bucks into the local economy instead of the global dividend ether where upon some pensioner in Saskatoon got a piece of the action. They were swamped and it took a while to order, but they were working hard, working fast, and very engaging with the customers in line. Head West has been making my favorite sandwiches since high school. I crave the stuff when I'm out of town. Their sweet bread is fantastic, as Bethany has noted. This place has good sandwiches. Their sweet bread is Mel-O-Cream doughnut dough baked instead of fried. The soups are hit and miss (the mediterranean lentil tastes like someone threw uncooked lentils in veggie soup). The brownies are decent, but overrated. They have one of the best soft drink selections of any place in the Capital City. The staff is the big variable here. And I mean big, and I mean variable. I've had great encounters with their staff. I've also had some of the worse interactions with another human I've ever had here. I've been ignored. I've called and put on hold. I've had deliveries that took longer to show up than the cable guy. More recently, I ordered from a friendly woman right before they closed. She offered me "Here or to go?" and, after asking again if it would be fine to stay, I chose to eat there. Then, while getting my drink, I was verbally assaulted by a man asking me why I thought I could eat there after they've closed. He flew into such a frenzy, and escalated the situation so quickly, I felt uncomfortable, embarrassed, and physically threatened. I've never had an interaction like that in my life. It was baffling, and it's enough to keep me away from Head West and in Monty's, Cafe Brio, or, God forbid, Taco Bell, where at least I know I won't have an employee assault me over the counter. read more
