Onions in a sub that is not supposed to have them

I have been visiting the area for years and have always looked forward to Head West, however, now that I live in the area and am able to frequent the establishments more frequently I have found they are wildly unpredictable as to the experience you will have. Sometimes it is amazing and other times absolutely trash! The last visit and the lack of response is the catalyst for this review. I ordered online because the HUGE banner on the website says "Order ahead and save time, ready in 20 minutes, go straight to the register to pick your order up". So, I did. Ordered at 11:24, said to pick up at 12:04 (it's lunch, they are busy, no problem). I show up at 12:08 and do as the website says and walk right to the register past the line and ask for my order...that hasn't been started. Again, they are busy, the guy said they will make mine right away (3 subs, 10 minutes tops) I walked out of the restaurant at 12:35...with a "sorry bout that" and nothing more. I went online to provide feedback via their "contact us" on the website. I not only expressed my concerns about the wait but what's worse, the order was wrong and had a inedible item in the food. I actually ended up sending two messages through that system with ZERO response. I then contacted the local store a week later and asked for the manager or owners email. I then email the provided email and explained the experience. ZERO RESPONSE. If you don't care, I don't care either and I will take my money elsewhere. There are plenty of great sub places in town and myself and my office that eats out daily will NO LONGER give money to an establishment that cares nothing for solid constructive feed back when you and your employees have failed to uphold your end of the deal. When the food is good, it is great...however, when it is bad it is really bad and there is no recourse because management and ownership don't care.

    #8 turkey ham and provolone

Re-using my review from the Jefferson St Headwest, although giving the downtown location a 5/5 because I think it tastes better. Unfortunately not open after 3pm or on weekends :(. Best subs in Springfield! This is a local company that is so much better than the other national brands. Meat and veggies taste fresher since they come from local sources. I always get the #8 ham/turkey/provolone on sweet bread, toasted. You can also add on Kettle chips and soup. I like their broccoli cheddar, although it is a little pricey.

Pick 2 (8$) Tomato Tortellini and 1/2 Italian (toasted) YUUUM!

What an excellent menu choice. I went all out and ordered the pick 2 with the Tomato Tortellini and 1/2 Italian (toasted) sandwich. Boom! What a flavor explosion! Thank goodness I walked in at 11:55 because by 12:15 the line was out the door, and I can see why! The staff were/are super friendly and look you in the eye! You don't get much of that anymore. Not only was my order repeated back to me but it was made to perfection. Well done Head West Sandwich Shop, well done.

    Pizza sub

Headed down to the capital for the day and we had nowhere to eat. It had to be walking distance to the Capital building just stumble upon it. Had the pizza sub(pepperoni, marinara, onion and green peppers) toasted. Tastes really good and thought it would have sautéed green peppers but had fresh green peppers. Welcome surprise it gave a nice crunch to the sandwich. Really good helping of Pepperoni in the sandwich! If I ever have to come back, I'm heading here.

My favorite. Love this place. The bread and dressing are the best ever. You generally get a huge portion of meat in your sandwich.

Just another sandwich. The bread is tasty, the rest is unremarkable. Prices are about what you'd expect for a sandwich.

Great local chain sub shop. Their subs are comparable to Jimmy John's but have a more local flare and feel.

I ordered the Thai pork bowl, and it was absolutely packed with flavor--perfectly balanced with a little heat, a touch of sweetness, juicy pork, and a satisfying crunch from the coleslaw. The sauces tied everything together beautifully. My wife got the chicken ranch sandwich and couldn't stop raving about it. I took a bite myself and was seriously impressed. The chicken was incredibly juicy and flavorful, the bread was outstanding, and the candied bacon took it over the top--truly next-level. This sandwich was done right. To finish things off, we tried the oatmeal cream pie cookie, and it did not disappoint. It was soft, perfectly baked, and full of rich flavor. I even had to grab a side of that candied bacon to go--it was that good. We'll definitely be back.

Thankfully we still were able to get one cider, and they had a selection of other beers. The cider was tart and refreshing, and I really like the berry mocktail, which had ginger beer, and a mix of berries in it. As for food, the Nashville hot chicken sandwich came with a lot of heat which was great. I got the dry rub version, which is spicer than the saucy version. The horseshoe sandwich is a local favorite, which is an open faced sandwich with sliced bread topped with meat (we got the angus beef), fries, and cheese sauce. It was quite heavy and creamy because of all the sauce. Overall we enjoyed our meal and our server was very friendly, although service was on the slower side.

The building is beautiful, the location is perfect, and we thought, "Hey, maybe those bad reviews were just people having a bad day." Spoiler alert: they were not. Service started strong. We were seated right away, and they even brought coloring pages for our kids -- a nice touch that gave us false hope. Then the food arrived, and it was like watching a plot twist in a bad movie. I ordered the Buffalo Chicken Pony Shoe. It came out looking like someone microwaved a bag of frozen chicken tenders and tossed them in buffalo sauce for moral support. The cheese sauce might have been homemade -- it was grainy enough to make me believe someone whisked it themselves -- but there was barely any. Also, who hides the cheese under the fries? That's the star of the show! I had to beg for more, and even then it arrived lukewarm, much like my excitement for the meal. My wife ordered the Pork Schnitzel with "spaetzle." Except it wasn't schnitzel; it was a pork cutlet that had clearly seen the inside of a freezer longer than most people's leftovers. And the "spaetzle"? Nope. Straight-up spaghetti noodles. The mushroom sauce tasted like it came straight from a can labeled Cream of Disappointment. Two of the kids got cheese pizza -- or as I like to call it, "Frozen Circle of Regret." My son's "chips" were somehow both soggy and chewy, a texture I didn't even know existed. Frying them until they're crunchy shouldn't be rocket science, but here we are. Everything was bland, flavorless, and missing any sign of seasoning. The best dish of the entire meal? My daughter's burger on her Pony Shoe -- mostly because it resembled real food. And just to add a little flair, nearly every plate was dusted with dried parsley. Because, of course, nothing says fine dining like sprinkling dried parsley on frozen food. This place has serious potential -- it's got the space, the charm, and the perfect downtown vibe. But if your secret ingredient is "frozen," no amount of parsley is going to save you.
