I've been going to Marina at HC Studio for almost 8 months now. I have crazy thick, curly hair and I've had trouble my whole life finding a stylist who knows how to handle it. Marina is not afraid to cut and style my hair! In fact, she makes it look fantastic. Whether it's Marina or another employee who washes my hair, I always get a scalp massage (one of the best parts of getting a haircut!) and Marina always remembers me and how I like my hair to look- she even remembers what's happening in my personal life! I used to be one of those people who sat quietly as I got my hair done, but Marina is such a personable, fun stylist who really cares about what her clients want and what's happening in their lives. I didn't have a preference and was open to trying new stylists and every single haircut was fabulous! It didn't matter which stylist they set me with, it was perfect and then Lindsey cut my hair and I have been going to her and only her now ever since. She cuts and colors and always does a perfect job. She gives honest feedback on coloring process and always makes sure we are doing the most healthy option to keep my hair the best it can be. I went in and had 14 inches of hair cut off my head to donate to Locks of Love and Melinda gave me the BEST haircut I have had in YEARS !!! I told her I wanted a low maintance hair cut that looked similar to the one Katie Holmes had on the cover of Glamour a couple of months ago and she did such a great job that everyone at work and all my friends keep asking me where I got my hair cut. What I really loved was that she pulled back my hair in a way that would be secure, yet didn't look too extreme (I've had lots of overzealous stylists who, when I say I want a "soft" look, pull back my hair so tightly that I end up looking like I've gotten a weird eye lift). Went here religiously when I lived in Brookline. Was never disappointed whether I was getting a cut or color. Ruthie saved me once from a at home highlighting job gone terribly wrong. She did an amazing job patching it up. I used to see both Grace and Melinda who do great cuts and really listen to what you want and do a great job helping you decided what would and would not go good with your face shape etc. Very reasonable prices for the service you get and I love how they support local artists on their walls. read more

I did lots of research before deciding on this salon and man was it worth it! I came in wanting to switch my ombre into highlights not knowing if it was possible. I was able to meet with Megan on the same day I called and she made sure to talk everything through before we began. She was so nice and easy to talk to and make sure I knew I could comment on things she was doing if I didn't like the outcome. Since I had to get squeezed in I did not have time for a blow dry which I was totally fine with. They have all the materials needed in their bathroom to blow dry yourself if you wanted to. Even the people washing my hair were amazing! Great head massage and they offered me products to try without being pushy about buying them. I will definitely come back!! read more

I just got a great haircut from this place because my other place was closed and this one was local. I got the chop, the shortest haircut I've ever had, and while I'm still getting used to it, it is definitely the only short haircut I've ever had that doesn't suck and actually looks cute on me and doesn't stick up in every direction. I have only had my hair cut at HC Studio a handful of times, but I've always had great experiences. Usually, I let Kerri cut my hair and Andrae do my color. Kerri is a great stylist -- unlike other Boston stylists, she actually listens to me and cuts my hair how I want it to be cut. Of course, she gives great suggestions and most of the time I take them, with great results! I've never walked away from Kerri's chair unhappy about my haircut. Andrae is a great colorist -- he knows how to do highlights like few others. Too scared to dye my own hair, I've been letting professionals do it for the past few years -- it looks the best when I have the extra cash to spare to let Andrae color it. HC is a friendly, welcoming environment. The haircuts are very reasonably priced. I'd pick them over the trendy Newbury St. salons any day. I'm lucky to have found them! read more

Went here to have my color corrected after having an AWFUL ombre coloring done at another salon (won't mention but message me if you would like to know which salon to avoid). Susan, the owner, and Michelle made me feel at ease and put in some spot highlights and toned down the bright blonde that I had on my ends. I will be back for a second round of highlights (yes- my hair was so bad that its taking multiple visits to fix) but I am very happy with the results and how quick and easy the whole process was. I've learned my lesson and I won't be going anywhere else from now on. read more

On your first visit you get a complimentary conditioning treatment. The scalp massage was very relaxing. Mary did my blow dry and was very gentle and patient despite how much hair I have! Decided to get my hair cut on a whim. Called and was able to get an appointment with Ross the same day. I'm not faithful to one particular studio or stylist, so I run the risk with every cut that it could be disaster...and there have been some disasters. Not this time! Ross was fabulous. I don't think I've ever had a more meticulous hair cut. We spent a good 15 min pre-shampoo looking at pictures from pinterest, assessing what that would mean he would need to do with my hair, and if I was okay with the decision. I ended up going pretty short...but I knew that going into it. I have a lovely curly bob-ish cut that's longer in the front. He blew it dry in order to texture and go over details. Again, I can't say enough about his attention to detail. It was MUCH appreciated. I love it. Thanks, Ross! read more

Marina is awesome! I've been looking for a stylist since I moved to Boston(10 yrs ago) and finally found her. From the moment I walked in, it was a great experience. Greeted by reception, coat taken, wine given. Marina had no openings but worked through lunch so I'd look fabulous for my trip(which was in 2 days). She was able to do everything I couldn't quite explain but wanted. She's got great style n personality- put me at ease as soon as I met her. My straw-like hair felt like silk when I left and I continue to receive compliments on my color. Thank you to the extremely friendly and professional staff at HC Studios, especially Marina. I like my hair short, blunt, and with bangs and I found that several stylists in Boston have been afraid of making too much of a statement out of my hair or haven't been able to do it (e.g. Dellaria is cheap but not great). Ruthie at HC, however, was excited that I wanted something a little unusual (though I really don't think it's that crazy) and did exactly as I asked. Ok so I reallllllly wanted to like this place after all the wonderful reviews I'd read and since I needed to have someone to take over from my super awesome stylist (who I'd have packed in my suitcase and brought to Boston with me when I moved, if it hadn't been a felony). I'm pretty low maintenance, I usually like to get a simple, modern cut, a few layers, tried some side swept bangs once, and I get my my hair colored ONE color. My previous stylist (who I have to write a review on next) was awesome, we'd spend a good 5-10 minutes discussing what I wanted, what would work and then I'd leave the salon with something even better than I'd hoped for and be a happy camper for the next month or so until my hair started to grow out. Fast forward to Boston and 6 months since my last hair cut and 2 since my last home based color- I'm desperate to get a cut since I'm 3 cats and a stolen shopping cart away from looking like a homeless person. After reading all the positive reviews, I came to HC salon for a color primarily. When I made the appointment, I specifically told the receptionist that my last color was 2 months ago since I know they need to allocate time based on that. Sure, no problem she said. When i got there, after my husband begging me to get a cut as well, i asked if they had any openings for a cut. Sure, she said, no problem. So i sit down with Megan, who was very nice, but right of the bat she said she couldn't give me the color I wanted since she only had an hour. (the color being a chocolate brown from my black/brown natural color+ grays). I, on my first relaxing day out after dealing with a toddler for what seemed like forever, explained that I;d already told them that when I made the appt. Long story short, she said that she could touch uo my roots but that was it and the I could come back for the coloring later. That was wonderful, except my daughter first birthday was a week later and I had family flying in from everywhere. Anyway we got through the color, which by the way barely covered the grays and on to the cut by Michelle. Again she was very nice but I got a safe cut, a few inches off, barely any layering. I dont know if I was just very spoiled by my last stylist, but maybe it was it too much to expect an all over simple color (no highlights, no tints, nothing, just one color) and get a layered shorter hair cut. It really was not worth the $150+ i spent there to look like I'd gotten a good shampoo and blow dry. read more

I so rarely get a decent haircut that I'm not a really knowledgable source, but I'm pleased so far. I came in not knowing what I wanted except that it needed to look better and have less split ends, and Ruthy gave me good suggestions and didn't make me feel foolish because I don't own a blow dryer or know a darn thing about how to style my hair. I left the salon looking pretty darn glamorous (the pouring rain soon put an end to the sleekness of the blow out, but it was fun while it lasted.) I've left off a star because Ruthy wasn't free until about 15 minutes after my appointed time, which wouldn't bother me except that there's a coffee/tea maker right in the shop and neither of the unoccupied women sitting behind the counter thought to offer me any on a chilly, rainy day or explain the reason for the delay. It's a pretty place, though, and easy to get to, and the price seems pretty reasonable for a cut of this quality in the city, so I'll be back to see Ruthy in a few months! Six months later: Time to add the extra star. I've become a regular haircut person because I really like this place. They must read the yelp reviews because I always get tea now. The last time I came in I got the best shampoo/head massage of my life as well. But mostly I come back for Ruthy. She really listens to what I want and then proceeds to give me guidance based on that, since she totally seems to get that I have masses of wavy hair and no styling abilities at all. The first time I came in she spent AGES blowing my hair out straight, which I didn't understand, since hairdressers are always anxious to give me huge ringlets when I leave and show me how my hair will look if I style it curly. But Ruthy, who has super thick curls of her own, realized that the only time in my life I'll have ever sleek hair is when she does it for me. Whenever I come in she gives me a cut which looks cute when let it airdry in my usual incompent fasion. And then she proceeds to blow it perfectly straight so I can play with it that way for two days. I had no idea how much fun that would be. I'll be back soon! read more

I was in desperate need of a hair cut and decided to give this place a chance. The salon itself is pretty cute, not overly decorated or flashy, just a calm atmosphere. The ladies at the check in desk were super welcoming and offered me a beverage while I waited. When my stylist came to get me, she was also really nice. But this is where the visit started to go down hill. When we got to her chair, it was still covered with the freshly cut locks of her previous client. She merely brushed it away with her hand, missing most of it so it was still in the chair - I had to brush away the rest of it myself. We discussed what I wanted done, and I tried to explain to her that I'm a big minimalist with the styling (wash 'n go kinda chick), so she offered to put layers in so it would all lay better without having to go nuts with trying to style it. We went to the shampoo stage. Now, I'm the kind of chick that really looks forward to the shampoo stage - it's part of what I love about getting my hair cut. Well, it wasn't good. There was no scalp massage whatsoever and a ton of shampoo got into my ear (to the point where I had to reach up, clear it all out, then keep my fingers near my ears to make sure more didn't get in there). It was a less than pleasant experience. We went back to her chair where she toweled off my head and started to pin sections in order to cut. Cool, I'm used to this part. But she parted my hair in the completely wrong place, on the wrong side even. I tried to mention this and she said that she'd adjust it once we got to those areas. Okay. Well that didn't happen. And neither did the layers we discussed. So basically I walked out of there with a hair cut. Nothing special, nothing other than my hair happens to be shorter now. Some parts were supposed to be even shorter, but hey, it could be a thousand times worse. I might go back - but to one of the more senior stylists - and only if the other place in the neighborhood that I want to try is booked. read more

I love this salon. I had been going to a place on Newbury St.. After one to many expensive, bad haircuts I decided to try a place a little cheaper and closer to home. I found HC studio and Ruthie. Ruthie is amazing. I have brought her different ideas and she always comes up with something I love. The staff is super nice and the space is beautiful. It feels like your in a loft with the hardwood floors and exposed red brick. I have also seen Susan for color. She is one of the owners and is a color specialist. She does a great job. When we first were trying to pick out my perfect color she told me I could come back if I wanted it darker for free. They really do everything to make their customers happy. You are offered coffee, tea and water when you first arrive. This place has a high class feel without being pretentious and you can't beat the prices. read more

She's really incredible. Not only did she cut my hair beautifully, but she always gave me tips for styling my hair by myself. She was a stylist and a teacher in one. I could not be happier. I went to HC studio for a corrective hair color, after a very bad highlighting experience. I was very fortunate to get a same day appointment with Kerri. I was greeted warmly, given a packet of coupons and offered a beverage. The deep conditioning treatment was amazing, I wasn't lathered and stuck under a dryer, I was massaged and pampered. After my color, I was offered my choice of styling products, a selection of tools and a room to dry my hair in. I was so pleased that I pre booked my next appt. for a cut and bought some products, which I used and loved. Fast forward to my cut, I LOVE IT. She really took the time to listen to what I wanted, and then some. I feel great for the first time in months. I will go back for sure and would recommend it to anyone. read more
