b.overly_delicious @fromthegroundup.cafe_ Highland, NY: Had…read morethe pleasure of dining at From The Ground Up Cafe, in Highland this week. One of the most unique cafes I've been to in recent memories. From the Ground Up, is located deep inside a 55+ senior living townhouse community. It was a little tricky to find driving through the different buildings in the complex. Once we figured it out, we were greated with a very large dining area that was super clean with big windows and plenty of natural light. They have a few cases of baked goods and coffee, as well as weekly specials. One look at the menu and I knew my order. Shakshuka (traditionally African or Middle Eastern) is a dish of eggs poached in a spiced tomato sauce with onions, peppers, garlic, chickpeas, and kale served with bread to soak up that wonderful red sauce and egg yolk. At $14, this was a steal. The Rueben and fries were pretty standard and my iced latte was decent. Finished things off with a chocolate chip cookie skillet topped with vanilla ice cream. Had plenty of leftovers to bring home. They do a lot of catering and use the cafe as a home base for their 2 food trucks. The chef is a CIA grad. Seems with the 100s of townhouses, they have a built in customer base. They offer some pretty standard stuff like paninis, waffles, omelettes, and burgers. Next time, I want to try the shepherds pie, fish and chips, or chicken and waffles. #highland #fromthegroundupcafe #shakshuka #coffee #reuben #hveats #hvfoodies #eater #igeats #ulster #hudsonvalley #ulstereateriesunited #cookieskillet #ulstereateriesunfiltered #cafe #townhouses @above_weddings

I mentioned this cute little town because it's just one of the little niches along the Hudson river that makes a perfect little day trip. FIRST IMPRESSIONS: really quaint storefront, and first impression.Enter through the cafe door which also functions as a retail shop for handmade objects like soaps, etc. The gifts have an upscale vibe-worth a trip back. We had about 15 minutes to kill before attending a Yelp event across The Street so we opted to take the chill off by purchasing a hot beverage at Norma's. The staff is pretty laid-back, friendly, but laid-back. If you're in a hurry, I'm not sure if this would work. The hot and cold beverages are very straightforward and you can get some vegan options here. There were two behind the counter, but I felt they were a little engaged in their personal banter and we're not that attentive. Not a real sense of urgency or purpose. I'm sorry if that sounds harsh but once they did give us their full attention, we let them know that we were waiting for an event across the street and didn't have a lot of time. They asked us if we'd like to sit down with our beverage and we opted to do so since it was pretty cold outside. We ordered two hot chocolate And two homemade biscuits. They gave us a table number stanchion for the table and let us know they would be bringing it to us. We did not need to wait. We took the three steps down to the main dining area, where we were pleasantly surprised that they were having a live event - in this case it was a storytelling event. There was a table available for the two of us so we sat down and quickly realized that the table was so off-balance that it post a potential safety hazard. When I placed my hot chocolate down and rested my wrist, the entire table tilted forward toward me. This is an easy thing to fix, but my guess is that it's been this way for a really long time. That's unfortunate. All that aside, the room was really cozy and had a lot of character - lots of two top and four top tables to provide a very intimate setting with each one having a good view of the small stage Minutes went by and there was no biscuit delivered. More minutes went by and we began to wonder if they had forgotten. I guess is that they weren't making the biscuits from scratch so most likely they did forget. Since we had already paid for everything with a pretty generous tip, we waited a a few more minutes. Time ran out when we noticed that the event attendees were lining up across the street. That's something we could see from the really great big windows that faced Main Street. Reluctantly, my sister and I got up from the table and headed to the counter where we had made the order. We let them know that we needed to go and asked if the biscuits were ready. They seemed perplexed at first and then a lightbulb moment. Yes. I suspect they did forget the order. I wouldn't bother so much but two biscuits and two hot chocolates. It was about $20 plus tip so when they recognized that the biscuits were still missing, they asked if we would like to take them to go. The lack of awareness was disappointing because they were clearly not busy with anything else A minute or two later, they emerged from the kitchen with a small bag, presumably containing the two biscuits. Service was definitely lacking, particularly for what is a bit of a higher priced venue. Maybe we caught them on an off night but my sense is that laid back attitude is built in to the business model. Would I return to Norma's? I'm not sure. The hot chocolate was good, not from a mix, but would it bring me back? I'll let you know.

Seems like in New Paltz everyone is vegan so it's nice to actually get some steak for a change! We were seated in the main room and it's super huge and green. Wish we came here while the sunset was still there so we can really intake the farmland and nearby area but it was dark by the time it hit 5/6pm in the winter! Service was great and fast. I was recommended that the espresso martini is the best but upon trying it it was super alcoholic and less espresso and the banana liqueur was interesting take. I think it wasn't my fave espresso martini but definitely packed a punch. This place is definitely super affordable compared to most I've been in the city which was a nice change and we ordered so much we were so full and had to pack up most of the items. The dishes are extremely large so come hungry. The complimentary bread was so yummy and soft- I definitely ordered some extra because the bread was amazing. For appetizers we ordered the oysters, the special beef tenderloin chili and the baked clams with the maple brussel sprouts. The oysters were fresh- super enjoyable. The chili was okay - nothing too remarkable and the baked clams were super tasty I would say as well. The brussel sprouts werent crispy on the outside but the flavoring of the apple and maple made it super addicting and it became one of my favorite dishes near the end of the meal. We also got the Caesar salad with grilled chicken and the steak frites which was cooked to perfection. Super yummy but also super filling so we did not expect the portions to be so huge. The whole menu was great and I somehow preferred the seafood over the main dishes but I definitely will come back for another meal if I'm ever in the area. It wasn't mind blowing as a meal but definitely worth it. They paid attention to detail and set up the creme brûlée perfectly and that was actually one of the best parts of the meal so thank you Henry for hosting my partners birthday and would glad to come again!

After we walked in one of the waitresses informed us that we can sit wherever we want. I instantly felt like I was inconveniencing her with my presence by the way she said it. Didn't take it personal just yet. What appeared to be the hostess came over a few minutes after we sat down and handed us menus that were very dirty. I looked at my husband and said I am ready to walk out of this place bc I am starving and it looks like they are too short staffed right now which is understandably out of a businesses control sometimes. But wait, instead of the waitress coming to our table to bring water or ask us if we would like a drink, she went to another table with a man and a child that she obviously knew well, and started eating their french fries and talking. That's when we decided to leave and spend our money elsewhere. So unprofessional. That couldn't wait? I hate to leave a review like this, but if I was the owner of this business, I would not want someone like that working for me, representing what seems to be a great place.
