I discovered this gem a few years ago, forgot the name (turns out it's literally called "The Bakery"--duh!), and recently literally stumbled upon it again while visiting. Guess it was meant to be... Such great stuff here! I'm a sucker for linzer tart cookies and here they are perfectly sweet and nutty. And the raspberry almond tart, the cherry cake with the shortbread crust are off the charts great, too. The sandwiches I saw looked amazing, too. Maybe next time. Eclectic food and really amazing people make this little joint a big hit!!! Purple people eater that was made was priceless. Bagels, duh New York, are great. As are the drinks - Got the Mocha Oasis and now I am in my own island. I am not posting photos because you should take the time to come to this historic place right next to Huguenot Historic site with 6-8 houses maintained since the 1700s or earlier!!!! As an alumnus revisiting New Paltz for a weekend of memories, a stop at The Bakery was a must. While the wrap I ordered didn't quite hit the mark, the desserts still held the same delicious charm I remembered from my college days. Oh my sweet, sweet friend. This place, this place changes everything. When I wake up in the morning, I hear the Bakery's sweet, succulent song. She calls me for breakfast, she calls me for lunch, & if I'm feeling extra ravenous, she beckons me for a big Ol' supper. What kind of sailor would I be if I were to ignore the Bakery's siren song? (a boring one for sure!) Anyway, you walk into this wonderful establishment & are immediately coated in the scent of pastries, bread, & my personal favorite... b a g e l s. Oh the bagels, how thee fill me with glee. The staff here handle those delicious circles with such care. The cream cheese schmear is always excellent- they never hold back. They toast with great finesse, & always hand me my sweet bagel treat with a smile. Even if the line is out the door, these brave employees are able to work faster than the speed of light. I've never seen a more hardworking team (which says a lot considering I personally know the Avengers), these soldiers can handle any challenge! Aside from the show stopping service, the atmosphere in this fine bake shop is nothing short of spectacular. When I walk up those Bakery stairs, I know I'm home. My close compadres & I share a lovely Bakery Meal, along with stories, laughs, & maybe even a couple smiles. This is what the Bakery was made for... community, friendship, & just a pinch of love. The artwork on the wall is also quite enamoring, why would I even bother with the MET when I'm being blessed with these beautiful local works? It feels ethereal to finally be able to return this location after that dreadful flood. Those 7 moons were incredibly dastardly, & I personally missed that special Bakery magic. The short old lady (I think she's the owner) was absolutely incompetent, she had no idea how to make a matcha, was asking the staff how to make a simple latte, she was chaotic and rude to her employees, everyone seemed extremely stress out by her presence. Every other time I've been there the staff had been very kind and helpful always very nice and quick. I'm very disappointed that this is the first time I've had a bad experience here and it was all because of the owner. Baked goods and bagel are always delicious but the sandwiches are extremely low quality (the eggs are microwaved (yuck!!)). The atmosphere with her there was very stressful and unpleasant she should learn to not interact with customers or staff at that. read more

Food and service are awesome! The vibe is one of an old bakery and there is ample seating.

The food was very disappointing. Ambiance is nice little shop with good service. But the baked goods totally not worth it. A grocery store does a better job. Cheesecake did not resemble cheesecake but more cool whip in texture. The carrot cake wasn't awful but lacked flavor. The cannoli was not even close to as decent as a supermarket. it's got a great vibe, big selection, and better quality food than most other similiar restaurants in new paltz. For pastries it is great, but for sandwhiches it is about average. My biggest gripe is that they microwave the eggs, for a bakery putting on a facade of this fancy vibe, it feels sub par to only be able to get microwaved, scrambled eggs on my sandwich. prices are good though. took about 15 minutes to get served and I was one of two people in the place. read more

Love the bakery and it really hurts me to write this review because I want it to exist forever. However - today was just another of too many days standing in line there for way too long. 30 minutes for a microwaved egg sandwich. Usually it's that long for just a coffee. Staff going behind the counter to make themselves food while there is a huge line and chit chatting, making everything take longer. The 2 people who were actually supposed to be working were overwhelmed - not because the job is hard but because they clearly have no experience. As someone who has been going there for a long time, it's rare to see the same face twice behind the counter because the turnover is so high. I could go on and on but it's infuriating at this point. I have almost walked out so many times - I think I'm just done. I can make my own food and coffee and not be aggravated. read more

I've been coming here for 25 years......... I last posted a review 2 years ago, not much has changed. The positive is that this place has great bagels and great pastries........ The negative is that it needs updating g, same decor for 20+ years; kinda feels dirty. Also, I really wanna eat outside, but the outdoor furniture is truly disgusting. We only took a very brief trip here for drinks during our downtown New Paltz adventure, but I was impressed with the wide array of baked goods and sandwich offerings, plus an array of coffee and tea beverages, and pre-bottled drinks in a cooler. Pretty much everything you could ever want from an old-school bakery, with a couple of cute surprises, like dinosaur shaped sugar cookies! I'm still regretting that we didn't get to try one a week and a half later! We just got a diet raspberry tea and a comically large water bottle - see attached image.. it was GIANT. The Bakery's interior is quite small, but there is a clean bathroom for customers only. However, the prices are inexpensive, and you should treat yourself anyway! Seating inside is limited, but take advantage of the summer weather, and find a spot at one of the rustic wooden tables to the front and side of the building. There, you'll have a prime spot for relaxing and people watching! Stay awhile at the Bakery! read more

I was a little disappointed by the brownies I got here. They tasted like cardboard sprinkled with cocoa powder. They looked fudgey and sweet but tasted nothing like what they looked like. I like that they've made it easy to order online and pick up your food through their website. I prefer this method over 3rd party apps because all of the money is going to the actual business. Make note that their in store display is way more extensive than their online menu, which is fine. I ordered a a toasted lox bialy with cream cheese and onions ($11). They give a decent portion of salmon, less than the typical bagel shop but enough to sustain you. It wasn't toasted and came with no onions, which is unfortunate since they charge you for every single topping (lettuce, tomato, onion, etc.) Missing onions isn't a cardinal sin and the bialy was delicious but the pesto tortellini I ordered wasn't servable. It was supposed to come with pesto but there was no pesto, just dry half frozen cheese tortellini. Zoom in to the photo and you'll see the little chunk of ice. I don't think the tortellini are made in house however I wasn't expecting them to be. But having it defrosted and with the pesto would have been nice. I ended up tossing it after one bite. The almond raspberry tart was so delicious! I highly recommend it. They also have pastel de natas. They had good flavor but they lacked the creme brulee-like crunch that natas typically have. It was soft all over, which will happen if you let them sit for a while - like a French fry that loses its crispiness after a while if it's been sitting. Based on the almond tart and even the natas, they can clearly make good pastries but the parts of my order that were made-to-order were handled carelessly. read more

The Bakery was a staple for me in my time at New Paltz. Whether I was trying to get a delicious bagel or breakfast sandwich after a night out, my favorite grilled chicken sandwich with provolone, a loaf of bread to bring home for dinner, or a sweet dessert, the bakery always had me covered. I would not send anyone to this bakery. There were only 2 people in front of me and 2 people behind the counter. Regardless, it took 28 minutes for me to get 6 items (assorted cookies), pay and walk out the door. They made each box as you waited. Also, when I was supposed to receive $17 in change, she closed the register and had to wait another 3 minutes while she took care of the customer behind me. They packed my 6 items including a mini cheesecake in a box that was so small I questioned how they could fit everything in such a small box. Needless to say when I got home the cheesecake was mashed and one of the tri-colored cookies was missing. I will not be going back to this place. read more

Today is the day that we decided we'll never return to The Bakery, after years. The food is ok, can't complain about that. However, they are always disorganized and slow, the worst part is the defensive and argumentative staff today when we brought a simple oversight to her attention, her unapologetic and confrontational response was shocking. A simple acknowledgement of the inconvenience would have sufficed. We didn't need any compensation or anything like that. There are place to go in town, and sadly I made the wrong choice today and somehow had to deal with a "I am right and you are wrong, so there it is" attitude from the counter staff. My favorite place! I used to come here as a child and eat dinosaur cookies and sip hot cocoa and play in the play kitchen upstairs. When you're balling on a college budget this place is for you! Delicious sandwiches, coffee and desserts. I love spending time doing my homework upstairs or outside, snacking on a peanut butter brownie. Highly recommend sandwiches! I love this place!!! This place hires THE NICEST and most customer service focused employees. I come here at least once a week and every time am greeted by a courteous and friendly face. Coffee is really good and so are the baked treats. And there is a little backyard area with tables if you want to sit and read and drink your coffee. Ignore the negative reviews - this place really cares about doing things the right way and the employees are all really good about masks and gloves and hand washing. I really appreciate this business and will keep coming here once a week :-) I have also recommended it to friends. Wonderful desserts. "Regular" food items are just ok. Nothing special. Sometimes staff is very friendly. Other times they appear to be having a bad day - they just go through the motions. Most jobs are not always fun but if you are not happy it should be transparent to customers. I've been coming here for 20+ years. The place is well known to locals. It's a nice place to get a coffee and sit outside. The bialys are excellent! So is the vegan chili (not served in summer). The knishes used to be freshly made here. I believe that they purchase them elsewhere now, so the quality has suffered substantially. I no longer will buy knishes here because they don't taste fresh. The upstairs could be cleaner. The kids play area and carpet seem like they could be cleaner. As a parent of young children, I pay attention to things I might not have as a 20 year old. I have lived in New Paltz for a couple of years, and never ate at the bakery. This week I rectified that little omission. The concept for the bakery is more similar of a deli. You order at the counter and if you are eating on the premises, they will bring your food to you. They have a variety of sandwiches, paninis, and wraps. They can also make your meal with gluten-free options. Their iced coffee is VERY good, and I'm usually not a fan of iced coffee. They have outdoor seating, so if it's a nice day or your pooch is accompanying you , you will enjoy that. read more

Stopped here early morning with a friend. We both had egg sandwiches, mine on a hard roll, hers on an everything bagel. Both were very good. Coffee was delicious, as was the service. We sat upstairs....the food was brought up to us. One thing of note - they do all their baking on premises, and have a wide assortment of cookies, pastries, muffins, etc. We didn't have any, but they looked absolutely mouth watering.
