I tried this place a while back but was very disappointed in the hours of operation. Depending on how long it takes me to get there because I take the bus I felt like a wasted my time. I tried to go on a Saturday only to find out that they were closed. I went back because I really wanted to give them the second chance. The staff are completely professional nice and patient. What I did see is that the doctor is very unprofessional. To beginning with, he was talking down to his employees in a very condescending and overbearing way. I brought my son in for a contact lens exam, but we were not informed of any costs upfront. The office waited until the end of the appointment to reveal the charges, at which point it was too late to make an informed decision. When I raised the issue, Yanti, the office manager, said I should have known the coverage details through my insurance--but regardless, the staff should have explained all charges before proceeding. Additionally, they performed a general eye exam that we didn't request, seemingly to bill the insurance for more. While I've been to other optometry offices that honor requests for contact lens exams only, Yanti claimed this is standard practice everywhere. She also refused to connect me with the owner, Dr. Maanum, claiming the doctor wasn't available. Later, Yanti called back and offered to cancel the entire appointment and issue a full refund, stating she wanted to "make it as if we were never there." I declined, informing her that I would be filing a formal complaint with my insurance provider and the Better Business Bureau. Based on this experience, I would not recommend this location. I suggest exploring other providers--America's Best, for example, offers clearer pricing and includes glasses with similar exam costs. read more

Unfortunately I am nor going back Doctor is great but staff has been worse over the years. What happened to customer service. I am (was as of yesterday) a new patient. i received a set of trials trials to take home to sample. After a couple of weeks, some of the lenses dried up. 2 of the trials worked, but i could not recall which was better. i called the office 3 times, over the last couple of weeks, and left a message that i'd like to take care of my prescription, only to never receive a return call. Then received a text from the drs office saying my contacts were ready for pick up. i had not picked a set. How are they ready for pick up? Finally, i reached their office yesterday and requested another set of trials and was told by dr. Maanum, there would be a fee for additional trials. It was very nominal, but where is the courtesy to a new patient? I am EXTREMELY disappointed and will continue my search for a new eye dr. read more

First time going to this place and I was impressed. The Doctor was very good and gave really good advice and options to make you feel comfortable. The service was amazing and the prices for the frame aren't bad at all. They have tons of brands and frames to select from. I regret to inform everyone this was the worst experience I've ever had. It took two weeks to get my glasses and when I finally received them, they weren't what I ordered. Smh. I payed extra to transition my sunglasses and put non glare on them. Neither was done ‍‍‍‍ When I call to tell them about my problem, Karen at the front desk wouldn't even let me get a word in to explain what was happening. All she said was, "the shade will get darker" Everytime I tried ask if the lens were going to be the rose gold shade I originally seen them in or if they will just go dark grey/dark. Poor girl didn't understand what I was askin and told me to come in. Smh. Simple question for a simple answer. But wait, there's more. They told me it would take week said the short Hispanic lady. I called in a week, and no one had any clue about my glasses and it's whereabouts. Said they'd call me back, NEVER DID. what kind of business? Smh So two days go by and I call back, the lady said she had to call the people they sent it too.... long story short they lost a screw. Now that I finally have my glasses, literally three days later. That same screw is no longer in place, I believe they couldn't find the original screw so they just replaced it with anything... smh what kind of business. I could tell because the screw is a silver and my glasses are rose gold. Smh They sold me something completely different from what I seen in the store. They hooked, lined and sunk me with all those additional charges, cause the transition isn't to the color nor shade I discussed. And now I'm stuck with broken glasses. And do you think Hawthorne Optometry cares? They don't, I've left multiple msgs, and no one has yet to respond. Came here because i thought i scratched my cornea...and i was right about since i had it before...but i wanted to get it checked out by a professional. I was referred to this place through a friend, and this place is great! Dr. Oishi to the rescue! He was very nice and professional as we discussed my symptoms and how it happened. He examined my eye and told me I had scratched my cornea. He gave me eye drops and also checked my eye pressure to make sure everything was okay. It was great relief that it was just a scratched cornea and nothing more severe. (Even tho it hurts). But, at check out i was a bit afraid of the cost because I dont have insurance yet...and it only cost $40 bucks which was great! The medical staff is very friendly, and kind. OVERALL: If you have any kind of eye problems, and worried about insurance issue...don't worry no more...come here and they WILL take care of you! (I promise!) read more

I was unhappy with my previous optometrist and decided to seek a new one. Luckily, Hawthorne Optometry is extremely close to me so I decided to check it out. I was able to make an appointment within one week of calling. Hawthorne Optometry is a small place, but they make it work. Wait time was short. The staff is friendly...for the most part. I am not sure if it was because it was close to Thanksgiving and they wanted to get everyone out asap, but everything felt rushed. It was like they wanted to get this over with and go home to enjoy the holiday. I will give them a pass though. It's not that they weren't friendly, but I'm used to being asked how I am doing, what do i do, etc. But it is nothing too much to complain about, because they were extremely knowledgeable about their services. I was asked questions and given information about my eyes that I was never asked or informed at my previous optometrist. I also felt their machines were updated and newer. Selections of glasses are small, but they cover everything you need. Hopefully my new glasses come out well. read more

I ordered prescription glasses for my little girl, took a while to be ready and they were the wrong style. They had only one style and I picked it just a different color and they still made a mistake ordering it. When I called to complain but they were rude and they would not apologize for it making me feel like it was my fault. Even when we went there they wouldn't apologize, which is the least they could do since we had to wait another 3 weeks to get the correct ones. They were very patient while we picked out our frames -even though they are cleaning each pair after someone tries them on, they don't make you feel bad about it, you get to put them in a basket after trying them on and only one person is picking out frames at any time so you get full access. My experience with Hawthorne Optometry was terrible. I dropped off my frames and prescription with them to simply have lenses made. I would expect that is a basic thing that an optometry should be able to nail every time no problem. But they got it wrong twice and had no idea why. The lady seemed to have no knowledge about lenses whatsoever and wanted me come back on a day the doctor was in so he could look at them and tell me what they did wrong. On top of that she said he was so busy that I would have to wait for when he was in between clients. I also thought they were not very polite, especially to the matter of them handing over the glasses for me to try on while still standing in the waiting room. At every other optometrist I've been to they have you sit down in front of a mirror and they help check that they fit right. Not here... The receptionist asks if you think they need adjusting and then she calls someone from the back to come out and adjust them, while you're still across the counter in the waiting room! They have a fear of their clients that they can't let you in the door to sit down? After this fiasco I got a refund and took my frames and same prescription directly over to Eyes On Main in Santa Monica (which is where I used to go) and they got them done in two days. I took them in Friday and got them back Monday! Hawthorne Optometry takes 1 week to have lenses made, and it ended up being over three weeks of waiting on Hawthorne Optometry to attempt to get them right, and they didn't. Eyes On Main got them done perfectly and quickly, with the exact same prescription. I'll add a note that this was while using my work VSP insurance at Hawthorne Optometry. read more

My insurance changed so I picked this place off of a list. This place sucked. 1) I went in for CONTACTS, I specifically told whoever was checking my eyes I wanted contact lenses because I only wear my glasses at night, and they ONLY got my prescription for EYE GLASSES. They charged my insurance for a contact lens exam too. 2) The prescription for my eyeglasses wasn't great, It was a little blurry but the doctor didn't care. I went to my normal eye doc and payed out of pocket, he got my prescription so I could see perfectly. 3) This was also an annual exam and he didn't dilate my eyes, which he's supposed to. My normal eye doc said he didn't like that he didn't. So overall, it was a bad experience. And the ladies who work at the desk were gossiping the whole time I was waiting. New employer in a new city thus the search for new optometrist. I found Hawthorne Optometry online and I made my first appointment. The girls at the front desk are very friendly and I am always seen at my appointed times. Dr. Henry T. Oishi is my optometrist and I am very pleased with his level of knowledge, willingness to answer all of my questions, willingness to see me before my 1 year appointment, and his patience with my schizophrenic eyeballs (that is not an actual medical term, just my personal thoughts!). They have a small selection of glasses but I found a PERFECT pair there. Overall, my experience is great and it's close to work and home. I've been here three times now and each time there's been some sort of inconvenient issue. My first visit was to get a new glasses and contact prescription. The front office staff, specifically Jenny, was wholly unfriendly during the check-in process, and this continued through subsequent visits. There is one who always sits on the left that's nice, but I typically ended up communicating with Jenny. Everything went fine during the first appointment until I got home and tried to order my contacts online. This office refused to fill any other brand but the one I told them I had ordered more recently. We didn't do a trial of any brand during my appointment, and I've worn three brands without complication, I mentioned this during my visit. I called the office and they told me they'd only fill what was in their paperwork. It took multiple phone calls before they related my frustration to the doctor, who said it was absolutely fine to give me the other brand. My second visit was because of an allergy that caused significant irritation to my eyelids. It's felt like glass scraping my eyes every time I blinked. I again was checked in by Jenny who told me we needed to do a couple tests. I hadn't even seen the doctor yet and didn't know why the front office staff was performing medical diagnostics, so I asked what tests and she became even more abrasive as usual. Annoyed, even. I laughed, out loud, at her annoyance with having to do her job (and every once in a while, a client is allowed to ask questions), and just did what she told me. The doctor was again very nice, and the appointment went by quickly after. My third visit, I was my typical 10-12 minutes early and was told, "we'll be with you in just a minute". I sat there until after my appointment time before they realized I was here and they checked me in a out ten minutes after my appointment started. Jenny, who saw me just a few days ago, came to the lobby and asked if I had an appointment. The appointment she made herself, a few days ago. So because I was checked in late, my appointment ran late. I ended up seeing the doctor 30 minutes past my appointment time. What's frustrating about this office is that the staff doesn't understand that they're the first impression when people walk in the door. I felt nothing but a cold, abrasive, unfriendly, and unprofessional staff had been hired here (I know it's harsh but it's true in my opinion), and despite the doctor's friendly nature, I won't be returning simply do I don't have to deal with the staff. I have to wonder how many clients have been lost because of this. It's like having great food at a restaurant but poor service, it sours the whole situation. read more

This is by far the best optometry office I've been to. This place is really clean and organized. I've never had an eye exam so thorough - the doctor and all the staff members are so patient and courteous. And I really like how the office communicates with their patients via email, such as to confirm the appointment, send newletters, and even follow-up on my visit. That's really great patient care!
