    Red bean bun
    Angela F.

For awhile now we have been wanting to try the cream buns at Hattendo and today was finally the day! Stopped by after work and honestly the walk from the subway station to the store was sketchy.. location-wise is not ideal. Anyway, we got the orange and red bean cream buns to try. The buns were fresh and the cream was not too sweet. I think the orange bun was more cream than orange, but the red bean flavour was packed. The buns are a small treat. At the price point I'm not sure I would return for the buns, unless perhaps there are more unique flavours. The sandwiches do look good though so might try them next time.

This is a Japanese cafe which is mostly takeout-only. I've been to this location 4-5 times since Jan 2020. It started as a dessert shop, selling cream buns and puddings. It has expanded to also selling sandwiches and tea/coffee. They are seasonal flavours. I came on 2023-03-04 to try their Mar-Apr 2023 seasonal flavours: Blueberry Cream Bun and Pistachio Cream Bun. Classic Buns are $3.89 each or 5 for $18.69. Some buns are $4.19 each. Seasonal cream buns may vary in price. Puddings are $5.25 each. Sandwiches range from $6.00 to $9.89. I ordered the following: 1. Blueberry Cream Bun x 2 ($4.19 x 2). 2. Pistachio Cream Bun x 2 ($4.19 x 2). 3. Chocolate Cream Bun ($3.89). 4. Egg Salad Sando ($6.00). 5. Croquette Sando ($6.00). The Blueberry Cream Bun is made with wild blueberries and blueberry jam. Nothing artificial here. The Pistachio Cream Bun has pistachio paste made from real pistachios. Very tasty and refreshing. The Chocolate Cream Bun tastes like milk chocolate and is my son's favourite, of course! The Egg Salad Sandwich (Tomago Sando) has egg salad, a soft boiled egg, Japanese mayo, and Japanese milk bread. It is a really good sandwich. The Croquette Sandwich has a croquette pan (made with potatoes), sliced cabbage, and Japanese milk bread. It has a nice sweetness and slight crunch. The cafe has counter seating with two stools. Most people order for takeout. There is no free WiFi. The cafe is not wheelchair accessible. There are no customer washrooms. There is paid street parking and a parking lot across the street. Online it seems so fresh and fluffy. The interior is quite small with only a 3 person max window seater, it is more of a grab and go situation. The cashier was nice, but the bread appeared prepackaged which took away from the ambiance. They have a fun little fortune telling station. We tried the red bean, milk tea, and yuzu. The bread is basically a soft dinner roll filled with whipped cream. Red Bean and milk tea were quite mild in flavor so yuzu was my favorite. But the lack of fresh bread and small size left more to desire.

    Delicious matcha and hojicha pudding!

My wife and I love this place. The lady working here is so friendly, kind and even remembered us from a previous visit. The desserts were delicious, especially the fresh fruit sandwiches, the yuzu drinks, and the hojicha pudding! Came back multiple times and will continue to come back the next time we are in Toronto! Prices are reasonable for their high quality food and drink items. Highly recommended to try! Thanks for reading and good luck!! (:

I've came here a few times over the years. Cute store front, really gives you a little bit of the Japan vibe. I've tried their melon buns before and they are great, filling is light and not so sweet, nice crisp on the top. However, with covid their menu is much smaller now and it seems like they no longer have the melon buns, I haven't encountered any every time I go which is kinda sad. So far they offer the regular buns with flavors such as matcha, custard, etc. They do monthly flavors and I came here for their limited time sake collaboration with Izumi. I love sake so I was super excited for this collaboration. They offered two types of buns, one with sake and one with sake/yuzu. As well as a regular sake pudding and sake with yuzu pudding. I ordered one regular sake bun, filling was light and sake flavor was there but other than that there wasn't much to it. I also ordered 3 puddings, one caramel which pretty much tasted like an egg tart (love egg tarts!) with caramel, pretty sweet in my opinion, I would probably opt out next time as I'm not really a fan of super sweet treats. The two sake pudding, regular and yuzu was great. Strong flavors of sake, yuzu was refreshingly paired well with the sake pudding. The containers are glass and comes with a lid so you could reuse it which is kinda nice.

Fall Seasonal Flavours-- get them before Hallowe'en!

These are the perfect snack for a hot afternoon! It's a soft, sweet, cold bun with generous fillings in so many flavours to choose from! One of their current feature flavours is milk tea, and I'm such a fan! It's similar to a lighter chocolate flavour, with nice notes of milk tea. The Baldwin location has two long benches outside, so while you munch away, you can sit and enjoy fall the way Baldwin Village intended!

Long story short: A Japanese grab and go spot for cream buns and aesthetically pleasing sandwiches! I got a small lunch from here between meetings, and it hit the spot! Long story long: I ordered an ebi fry sando, which was fresh, light and delicious! I asked for it warm/toasted, and it only took 5 minutes. The time flew by because they had this lovely Omikuji station - fortune telling paper. A fun, interactive way to pass the time! My fortune was at the "average" level, but got hilariously and progressively negative (I am told I am NOT winning my next law suit). A cool experience regardless, a unique memory. The staff was friendly and attentive. The location is small, so it is not somewhere you can sit, but great to grab and go. I can't wait to try what they are known for - their cream buns. Highly recommend for a quick lunch!

4 of my friends excitedly went to try this place. We actually had to go on 2 occasions because the first time, they were closed (they close so early!) We all got the same original bun because that's all they had left when we went. We all hated it. The bread was dry and the cream was flavourless. All I could taste was bread yeast. Literally. And I've made my own bread before so I know that yeast tastes and smells like. Wish the buns were larger, more flavourful and sweeter. The price at almost $4 for a bun is also astronomical for what you get. Tons of cheaper, tastier options with a 10 min walk. 2 stars instead of 1 because I'm saving my 1 stars for something tragic or absolutely disgusting

GORL. $4 FOR A SMALL ASS BUN (it's like the size of my tiny hand fist)? It's a no from me. Thicc buns only pls. You can get their cream buns or their melon pan style cream buns. The melon buns are a bit more expensive. These buns are all essentially filled with this super light, airy, not too sweet flavoured whipped cream filling - custard, chocolate, azuki (red bean), or matcha. The cream is definitely super yummy - got the matcha and they didn't skimp on the matcha flavour at all. The bun itself was pretty disappointing, it's not especially fluffy or soft (prob cus it's kept in the fridge since they're meant to be eaten cold). Alas, for $4 I'd rather get 4 mcdonald ice cream cones.

I love cream buns and was excited that Hattendo was opening here in Toronto. I tried five different flavours of their cream buns - matcha, custard, whipped cream, red bean, and chocolate. The buns were so soft and fluffy but most importantly creamy! Matcha and red bean were my favourite flavours. It is mainly a take out place with only a few stools but there are also two benches outside. I also had fun at their mini fortune telling stand inside, it was quite unique to Toronto and my friends even thought I was in Japan for a second! Overall, I would definitely be coming back again for more cream buns!

    Matcha Custard bun (3/5)

So excited that Hattendo finally opened in Baldwin Village (a.k.a. my favourite foodie neighbourhood) ! I got to try their Signature Custard Bun, Regular Matcha Bun, & Melon Bun Matcha. I loved that it's served chilled so the overflowing & creamy custard was very refreshing. The flavours were mild and barely sweet. The regular bun was super light & fluffy, but my favourite was the melon bun for the crunchy and slight buttery taste! It's a bit pricey at $3.69+tax for their regular buns and $4.19+tax for their melon buns though.

Passed by this cute little place on Baldwin and decided to step in. They sell Japanese custard buns with different flavours inside. Some flavours are classic like matcha, azuki bean (red bean), custard, etc., and some are seasonal. Currently, the seasonal flavours are purple yam and yuzu (citrus). There are also two different types of buns. One is the original soft, cream bun and the other is the melon bun (crispy/crunchy outside). We got 5 cream buns. In hindsight, we should have tried at least one melon bun but we can always come back. We got the matcha, purple yam, yuzu, azuki bean, and custard buns. The bread part was soft and the fillings weren't overly sweet (typical of asian desserts). Out of the 5 flavours we got, the purple yam was the most mild tasting and that's why it was our least favourite. The others had a good amount of flavour to them. If we had to choose a favourite, it would be the azuki bean but the yuzu was a nice unique flavour! The shop itself is pretty small with no seating, so it's more to just stop in, order and leave. The staff were friendly and helpful when answering my questions about the flavours and different types of buns. Price-wise, it was $21.53 for 5 buns. They have cheaper prices if you order in certain quantities, but it's only for the classic flavours and not the seasonal. We thought it was a little pricey. Would be we back? Maybe if we were in the area and needed something to nibble on, but wouldn't make a trip specifically to come here. We weren't mind blown. But we're glad we tried it at least once. Next time we'll try the melon bun.

The pastries and mochi breads are absolutely exquisite! I tried the black sesame mochi bread--light, pillowy, and filled with a delightful little white mochi surprise. The crème brûlée almond tart was incredible too, with its thick, eggy custard and a blueberry-almond center. And the Hitotoki matcha tart? Gorgeous and just perfect. It was my first visit, and I discovered the bakery through their 2nd-anniversary IG post. I bought about $20 worth of treats and got to spin their prize wheel--and I actually won the Grand Prize: a limited-edition gold Nespresso & milk frother kit! I literally jumped for joy. Yet another reason to love this incredible bakery!

But there was no "lava" at all... just a layer of cream sitting on a thick tart base. You do get some matcha flavour, but definitely not that rich and flowing matcha sauce I saw in those online reels. Matcha Mont Blanc - Too sweet. The green noodle-shaped topping is actually made from a kind of bean paste - not much matcha taste, but had a strong bean flavour instead. And again, it was too sweet to my liking. Taro Tart - This one was good. Taro-flavoured cream on top, with taro paste underneath, then a layer of custard with mochi at the bottom. Had a rich taro flavour. Still a bit sweet, but not as overwhelming as the Mont Blanc. Overall it was not bad, although TBH I haven't really found great matcha desserts in Toronto so far.

This place was also super poppin' when I got there. It was earlish in the day around 10:30am and it seemed all the tables were pretty much taken. They are adding a dinner menu which is very exciting. Their pastries are phenomenal!!! Picked up a plum and pistachio tart, a chocolate mousse cake and an apple Danish for my mom. Plus a chocolate caramelized croissant. So much butter, and yet so good. Brought my container, which they happily used. The last time I visited this spot back in 2022, I vowed I would come back and take up space in that beautiful bay window seat. Yet I haven't followed through with that yet. One day. They also changed the name, since I was there last it was called Le Conciliabule Lab. Le Conciliabule means, "speak easy", as their website says. It was used back in the day to describe a place where people would come together and talk about everything and nothing. I can definitely say that happens here. What a beautiful concept, "everything and nothing". Now named Bisou, which means kiss. That's actually really simple and sweet.
