Cris I.

A Taste of Israel in the hood. This is a family owned and run business offering Middle Eastern flavors. I had been here twice and met the owner, Aime and his wife. First visit, I had the Falafel hummus appetizer served with warm, fresh pita. I would have ordered something else but I was on an errand so I enjoyed this in between runs. I loved the pita and hummus but falafel was just okay. Second visit, I had Sabich with loaded fries, a bed of crispy, golden fries, topped with grilled eggplant, shawarma, hard boiled egg, tahini and a sprinkle of parsley. I loved this item and something I'll reorder on my next visit. Free side dishes available which include different kinds of pickles. Just grab a small plate and help yourself at the bar. Free limited parking in a small plaza shared with other businesses. The place is kinda small but clean. Restroom is also available on site.

This is definitely my favorite Mediterranean food in the valley. I tried this place out a couple weeks ago for the first time and have been thoroughly impressed. I come here almost every day for during the week on my lunch break. The service is amazing, they have a salad bar that has different salads every day which I've never seen at any other place before. It never gets boring because they have different homemade style meals every day as well. The food is always fresh and made on the spot. Pictured are a couple of meals I've had here the past weeks. Chicken breast salad, chicken breast plate, beef fajitas (a daily homemade meal dish), and a shakshuka breakfast with sides. They also have a wide variety of drinks from Israel which is a fun twist like juices and nonalcoholic black beer. Amazing lunch spot and Sunday breakfast location.

Shakshuka in a pita for breakfast. It was delicious.

I really like middle eastern food in general and indulge on Israel food in specific. Almost every middle eastern country has it's style of shawarma, pita, humus, babaganush and tahini. The Israeli middle eastern cuisine is my favorite. Hatikva (named after the Israeli anthem) took over the Star Falafel space, that was good in it's own, and improved some of their recipes. Their shawarma in a pita, lafa (similar to lavash but better) or baguette is juicy and delicious. The falafel here is good as well and one of my all time favorites, shakshuka in a pita for breakfast, is always a winner. My belly likes this place, I have an extra 5 pounds to prove it.

They had utensils, napkins, and sauces with containers while you wait. I ordered the falafel bowl and pali salad in case the bowl itself wasn't enough. It did take longer than the other orders but once I got it, we sat outside where they had a few tables and chairs. The bowl looked fresh and vibrant, so many colors and a decent amount of falafel. I tried their white and mazbout sauces on the salad. I'm glad it had spinach as it helped reduce water from seeping out. The falafel was slightly spicy since I am terrible with spic r tolerance but the sauce made it very balanced. I also got to try someone's fries and it was super delicious, the spices they used on the fries were flavorful and the fried were very crispy and smooth inside. Overall, very nice quick lunch, we arrived before they opened right at 12pm and avoided the lunch rush! Very affordable prices as well.

I went there in the hundreds of times. I like this place, and appreciate that they keep their prices so low. I think the falafel bowl I had was $6 or something ludicrous like that. It was good, not great. I also had the veggie shawarma. I won't get that again. It was mushy, and when I go for that dish, I'm not trying to be healthy. I guess if I were vegan for principled reasons, I might appreciate that more....... It was one and done for me. Shout out to the workers there. It was Ce and Michelle. Ce is one of the nicest restaurant workers I've ever met!!! Total gem!

Great decision. I couldn't even tell you everything that was in it, but every ingredient had a purpose. The Chicken Pita was just as good, packed with juicy, well seasoned chicken, and the extra garlic sauce was so good it ended up on just about everything. The food reflects its Palestinian roots with fresh ingredients and bold, delicious flavors. Service was fast and genuinely friendly, the dining room was clean with a cool modern design, and the whole experience felt polished. I finally went in today and sadly, was not only disappointed, my fantasy of Falafel King was destroyed forever. I know Benito used to work for Falafel King, but this place is nothing like it. The service was horrible. The guy behind the little counter was not nice at all. In fact he was rude. And didn't like if you asked him questions. But that aside, sitting in this little tiny restaurant was not a good feeling. We were the only ones there. They have a seating area outside, I'm guessing for overflow - yet, the table and chairs were right there in the middle of the restaurant. Piled up. They didn't even bother to take it outside. Put all that aside - we get to the food. One of the best things Falafel King has were the "chips", which were battered slices of potatoes that were deep fried. These were slices of potato, they were potato chips. Thin. No "meat" on them, if you know what I mean. And sadly, they were fried either early this morning or last night. Terrible, cold, hard, no taste - not even salt. We move on the falafel - which tasted good. The taste of the falafel itself was good, but the oil dripping down my hand an face was not. I blame that on the oil not being hot enough when he put the falafel into the oil. Next, the actual shwarma is not really shwarma (like you all know it). There was no revolving slab of meat where the fat melts into the meat and makes it so so special. No. This was a little baggy of already cooked meat with no spices on it thrown on the plancha and heated up. Hard and tasteless. Very disappointing. I picked it out of my pita and ate the salad with tehina and spicy eggplant (which WAS tasty). The pita is also a thin hard pita - not the nice fluffy type. I didn't finish my food, and my friend didn't finish the food, as you can see in the pictures. Sorry to give it a 1 - but to say you have ANY connection to "Falafel King" is a disgrace. Sorry if I sound brutal. I tell it like it is.

Out server Emily was a delight. So friendly and accommodating (and thanks again for the Baklava!) We had the lamb shwarma plate and the fried chicken plate, both with hummus. Also a side of the Za'atar/sumac fries. Fries came out first PIPING hot, crispy, seasoned perfectly nom nom. The entrees quickly followed. The lamb was so tender and juicy and bursting with flavor. And the fried chicken was AMAZING. Shwarma that is breaded with an amazing mixture and fried. Genius! The plates also came with hummus topped with whole chickpeas (YUM), dilled rice, a cabbage salad and other greens, grilled pita bread, olives and my personal favorite, pickled radishes. Many reviews describe them as beets (which I also love) but these are radishes and they pair so well with the rich meat. An umami bomb! Portions HUGE (we have a full meal waiting in the fridge) and prices very reasonable. Patio is a very fun hang with pretty lights. My only knock is on the chairs which are not exactly "comfy." But that's a trivial issue. Service was attentive and staff so friendly and helpful. I can't remember Emily's colleague's name but shout out to her and her Rasputin's shirt (yay Berkeley vibes.) Could be because it was Sunday and there was a Farmers Market nearby, but still something to consider. We ordered the Lamb Plate ($26). Portion was solid and the plate is actually pretty interesting -- lots of different sides (flatbread, greens, olives, pickled turnips, etc.), so it doesn't feel boring. That said, the lamb itself was just a few small pieces and it was ground. I would've preferred more actual meat Tried the rosemary lemonade too, but didn't really taste any rosemary. Just a regular lemonade, slightly sweet and sour. Also you pay upfront right after ordering. We sat outside on a small patio facing Glendale Blvd. It's a tight space, and at one point someone from the street was walking around nearby talking to themselves, which made the experience a bit less comfortable. Staff was friendly and service was quick though, no issues there. Also, no public restroom, so keep that in mind. Overall, not bad. I was hungry, so I finished everything pretty fast, but it didn't really stand out enough for me to make a special trip again.
