Love this place and go often. Haven't had a dish I didn't love. Particularly love the cholent and grilled veggies.

Hatikva offers locals an important service, home cooked style food they can take home for the Sabbath and claim as their own. The cooking is very typically "Israeli cooking". Consisting mostly of homemade dishes, ready to put in the oven this place offers a variety of cook dishes to go. There is no seating inside, however, you have you are welcome to sit at one of the outdoor tables. The Cholent was mediocre. It was missing many of the ingredients typically found in Cholent. On top of that it was both very heavy on the turmeric, but lacking basics such as salt. This may be explained way by the fact that this Cholent appeals to the Ashkenazi crowd who prefer things to be relatively on the bland side. The vegetables were tasty, but what seemed to be warmed vegetables, turned out to be cold vegetables with one exception; the warm okra was mixed in with the cold vegetables. A mistake that can cause problems down the line. The Israeli pitas that were bought to take home and freeze were perfectly good. Of note was the staffs, great attitude, big smiles, and willingness to help and guide. This reviewer however, gets the feeling that if you are not Israeli (that is to say, Hebrew speaker) or Jewish, you'd be lost at the menu and offerings. The food is so good. I was driving by and stopped to see what they had. Before I knew it I had a bunch of small salads, sides like Moroccan olives, bamia, pita and schnitzel for my family. When the owner heard I was gluten intolerant he ran in back and made me an order of gluten free schnitzel. It was so delicious and what a treat to be able to enjoy without a tummy ache! Definitely call ahead though so they'll be able to accommodate. Also be prepared for an at times crowded, fast paced customer experience. You need patience if you're a newcomer because they have preorders and can't answer a ton of questions all at once for us slower curious customers but they are kind and helpful. I also tried the sea bass and it was so good that it will be difficult not to indulge again!! Highly recommend it. read more

I've driven by this place dozens of times, but until yesterday I hadn't gone there. The place was bustling and there were so many choice. I got a bunch of salads, entrees, and sides for Shabbat dinner and let's just say that you couldn't hear anything during the meal except sounds of "yum" and "mmm." Favorite dishes were the teriyaki salmon, steak in some kind of delicious sauce, the Moroccan fish, the babaghanoush, and all the veggie sides (potatoes and green beans were my favorite). read more

I went to my friend bar mitzvah and I I was amazed from the food and the service and I ask who is the catering for this event and I find out that a thick of a grill was the one that was a great experience. A Taste of Israel in the hood. This is a family owned and run business offering Middle Eastern flavors. I had been here twice and met the owner, Aime and his wife. First visit, I had the Falafel hummus appetizer served with warm, fresh pita. I would have ordered something else but I was on an errand so I enjoyed this in between runs. I loved the pita and hummus but falafel was just okay. Second visit, I had Sabich with loaded fries, a bed of crispy, golden fries, topped with grilled eggplant, shawarma, hard boiled egg, tahini and a sprinkle of parsley. I loved this item and something I'll reorder on my next visit. Free side dishes available which include different kinds of pickles. Just grab a small plate and help yourself at the bar. Free limited parking in a small plaza shared with other businesses. The place is kinda small but clean. Restroom is also available on site. read more

Racism & Profiling at its best! So I go to Yelp to find a kosher food place to try their shawarma. I see nice pictures on yelp! When we get there, it a small place, messy, dirty at front, no sign of cooking, tables or food. We decide to leave then a guy come from the back saying: "what are you stealing from me?" We were shocked but still we asked "are you guys a Restaurants" he kept repeating "what are you stealing from me? I responded it is not right to accuse potential customers of stealing. Then he started following up on the parking saying: I was joking ma'am. That is not a smart joke sir!. Yelp has nothing t do of this place It's like 2 different places. Shame on you. read more

This is definitely my favorite Mediterranean food in the valley. I tried this place out a couple weeks ago for the first time and have been thoroughly impressed. I come here almost every day for during the week on my lunch break. The service is amazing, they have a salad bar that has different salads every day which I've never seen at any other place before. It never gets boring because they have different homemade style meals every day as well. The food is always fresh and made on the spot. Pictured are a couple of meals I've had here the past weeks. Chicken breast salad, chicken breast plate, beef fajitas (a daily homemade meal dish), and a shakshuka breakfast with sides. They also have a wide variety of drinks from Israel which is a fun twist like juices and nonalcoholic black beer. Amazing lunch spot and Sunday breakfast location. read more

This place is awesome. The food is delicious and the people there are super friendly. I haven't eaten there in a while (even though I want to) b/c there's always a bunch of folks smoking and not wearing masks outside, and it makes me wonder if the workers there are doing the same. That's their right of course and maybe it's silly to assume the cleanliness of the business, but I'd rather not take the risk of catching COVID. Always love finding new local eats in the area. Recently under new management, Hatkiva is setting up to be the new go-to spot for your Middle Eastern/Israeli food fix. They have the classics from chicken shawarma and schnitzel to a nice salad bar with all the favorites (pickled veggies, tomato salad, spicy peppers, etc). The Chicken Shawarma plate comes with rice, israeli salad and a nice heaping portion of shaved chicken. Really enjoyed this plate and I personally love mixing the rice and salad into one glorious pile! Schnitzel was two huge slabs of perfectly breaded chicken and we got it with fries and a salad. The fries were golden crispy and the chicken reminded me of my mom's home cooked schnitzel, so I'm a fan. Their hummus is really great too, but the real showstoppers are the falafel. Perfectly made, crispy on the outside but soft and warm on the inside. I've had some pretty good (and bad) falafels in my life and these are pretty up there for me! They have daily specials which I would go back to check out and definitely find me here on Sundays grabbing their Jachnoon. I really like middle eastern food in general and indulge on Israel food in specific. Almost every middle eastern country has it's style of shawarma, pita, humus, babaganush and tahini. The Israeli middle eastern cuisine is my favorite. Hatikva (named after the Israeli anthem) took over the Star Falafel space, that was good in it's own, and improved some of their recipes. Their shawarma in a pita, lafa (similar to lavash but better) or baguette is juicy and delicious. The falafel here is good as well and one of my all time favorites, shakshuka in a pita for breakfast, is always a winner. My belly likes this place, I have an extra 5 pounds to prove it. read more

I decided on the Jerusalem Special Mix pita, comprised of chicken livers, chicken pieces, onions, and the usual suspect; humus, pickles, harissa, fresh veggies, and the fluffiest pita this side of the valley. All the flavors melded together quite nicely; everything was well seasoned, cooked, and arranged for the ultimate bite. The restaurant is much bigger on the inside then you would expect, it's clean, with a touch of disarray that you almost expect to find. I just ordered a delivery from this place. Had THE MOST AMAZING falafel sandwich! Pita bread: is thick, fresh and fluffy like a pita bread should be (which is so rare to find in LA). Falafel bowls: amazing taste, fresh, airy and crunchy. Again, I'm super excited about this because I've been looking for so long for this quality of falafel! Hummus with mushrooms: delicious! About a month ago I ordered a delivery through Postmates , we ordered 6 plates and some sides . When the delivery person arrived he was missing 2 plates . When we called the resturant and spoke with the manager she asked if we don't dispute the charges with Postmates and she will accommodate us for 2 plates for free on the next delivery . Today I tried to ordered base on what was promised , after speaking with the manager she denied she ever promised anything and refuse to accommodate me for anything . I have been here under its current (and previous ownership) I have been pleased by the food, service etc. Unfortunately I went in a week or two ago and the staff person responsible preparing the food, came out from the back with no mask. I heard they had the best falafel on the west coast and my god they were amazing. Crispy on the outside and perfect wet texture on the inside. They were super flavorful and so savory. The Moroccan cigars you can tell are home made and made with love. These are not frozen from restaurant depot. Each is hand rolled and stuffed with meaty goodness. Hummus was fresh and perfectly spiced. The pita were also warm, fluffy and toasted to perfection. If you are down for some Cholent or Jachnun - both Shabbat delicacies. Then come on Sunday and these items are LIT. Their grilled chicken plate was super flavorful and just so fresh and light. I can eat that all day. The ambiance is fresh, airy and most importantly CLEAN. I met the owners, a very sweet and welcoming Israeli woman and her Moroccan husband. You get the feeling they transported their home countries to the Valley and all of the hospitality, flavors, and dishes are made with that purpose. Would go again! An immense disappointment from the service to the food. First of all, they were out of all the items we'd come for, and the prices we were charged were incongruent with those posted just 7 days ago by another yelper. Almost everything cost $1 more. Plus, my sister was charged $3.95 for an extra item we didn't order or receive. Talk about misrepresentation. If you are going to give this place a shot (which I would highly discourage), do not, of all days come on a Sunday. They apparently don't serve half their menu on Sundays, and sell out of the rest right away. We came for their cauliflower- they ran out of that. We wanted their margez- they don't have that on Sundays. Beef shawarma? Only chicken today. When the cashier (owner, it sounds like) called over his shoulder to ask if they had the beef kebab (ground), a lady replied with an emphatic "of course!" Well, girl, I wouldn't be so sure you have the plates to put the food on. We settled on the beef kebab with eggplant and tahini, an order of the hummus with mushrooms and an order of falafel, all to go. We waited 30 minutes for this, even though there were only a couple of other customers in there- half of whom looked to be the owner's family/friends. The beef kebab itself was fine, a little dry. Also, nothing was as hot as I'd expected, since I'd assumed we'd waited all that time for them to make everything fresh and it only sat in the car for a five minute trip home. The babaganoush was inedible. And that's saying something, because I'll eat just about anything. The girl who came over to clarify if we'd wanted the fried eggplant or babaganoush on the side of our plate mentioned it was made with mayo. Thought that was weird, as it's usually eggplant mixed with tahini. I'm middle eastern and have been eating middle eastern food my whole life, and never have I heard of using mayonnaise. It was so smoky, neither my sister or I could deal. I'm a huge tahini fan, but their tahini was too salty for me. The pieces of eggplant weren't dry, which I'd initially feared (sometimes the slices can take on that stale, foam-like consistency), but they were oily and, strangely, tasted kind of like potatoes. The falafel was also disappointing. It wasn't as crisp on the outside as it should be, and it was, again, on the oily side. It's like it hadn't been fried properly and just soaked up the oil. The hummus with mushrooms and onions was the best thing. The hummus was good, not the best I've had but solid, and the mushrooms/onions were perfectly cooked and flavorful. But ten bucks for a small container of mostly hummus with a few mushrooms on top? That's a bit much. It came with two pieces of pita, which were, to my great disappointment, cold. My sister called them about the overcharge, and the girl who answered was minimally apologetic. The least you can do as a business is to express concern (especially when it was your own mistake) and try to leave the customer with a decent impression, but they missed that shot. Overall, slow/unhelpful service, high prices, and subpar food. It wasn't just a lackluster experience that I'd avoid repeating, but I wish I hadn't spent the money or appetite on it in the first place. read more

Wow. First of all, the customer service was remarkable! I felt so at home in this establishment. It's super clean, the environment is super friendly and the food was sooo good. I've been trying to support local restaurants. This restaurant had a great review on Nextdoor. I decided to try it. Not a good experience at all. First of all I took a chance with Covit. Second of all I was overcharged on the item. The sales person said it was with tax. When I got the receipt it charged me for extra tax. The menu board had a different price than I was charge. He called his boss & she said that the prices are going to go up, but that is not the price today. Don't charge me more on an item that will be going up. That is wrong. The food was so, so.
