This place is straight out of the movies. Ma and pa sho with fresh made pie and a personal connection with every customer. The owners are a husband and wife team. With the mr on the grill and Pam running the front of house, she takes all of the orders and dosent rush anyone, makes everyone feel as if they are home and welcome. The decor is just what you would expect from a ma and pa shop, its homey and comfortable with an eclectic mish mosh. The tables are stressed from 14 years of happy customers and meals prepared with all the love of home. The food is priced for most thi gs around the $15 mark. I have eaten here a few times now, the deluxed dip is an awesome sandwhich along with he Reuben. I have had the big breakfast and the eggs Benedict. As far as I can tell everything is home made. Including and most notably all of the pies. This couple must work their tails off! It's an all around hit for comfort food. read more

Nice little diner tucked away in an Edmonton community. We stopped in here after shopping with the wife for some lunch and to try their flapper pie! I haven't had flapper buy since I was a boy in the early 70s. The food was excellent! The service was excellent! The owner chatted us up as we discussed our dogs, cities (we are from Steveston/Richmond, BC), and family. I was really impressed on everything about this place, and the owner takes pride in her establishment. Very clean and cozy... Like visiting someone close to the family at their home. First impression was by their store front sign which was out of date which I assumed the place was run down. Stepped inside, definitly wrong. Waitress was friendly and seated us. As we were deciding, the owner Pam came up to us noticing that we weren't regulars and could tell it was our first time. She even asked our names to know us on a personal level! She took us in with open arms with full of joy and spirit and talked to my girlfriend like as if they knew each other from somewhere else ! Pam is a very lovely person as it appears she can cheer your day up. My girlfriend ordered shepherds pie and i ordered big breakfast (see pictures), with a side of sausages and pancakes (not shown). Homemade hash browns couldn't be any better, bacon, eggs, toast, and ham were just right. I like how the butter wasn't stone hard and easily spreadable. The shepherds pie was so OH MY GOD ! Definitly a MUST when you come here ! Sausages are spot on, coffee was good. The special hot sauce that they offered was alright but not enough for me for my tolerance. The pancakes and garlic bread were perfect, the syrup isn't maple but it's alright, I'm sure it's store bought. The decor is good 'ol country home decor, relaxing in my taste. The crowd ranged from young non city-slicking professionals to construction-dads-going-work to old timers who reminisce over breakfast. My girlfriend ordered coconut cream pie as suggested by Pam mentioning it was her favourite and I had lemon berry just because I saw it in the Yelp photos. Coconut was also oh my god as it tasted like a fresh juicy coconut jumped into my mouth. Lemon berry was flavourful and not too sweet. The breaded crust was a tad short. During our stay, there was a lineup at the door which I guess this place is favoured a lot by the neighbouring locals. Will we come back again? Definitly we will. This was my first visit here because it's at the opposite end of the city from where I live. I had two guests and we arrived at a little before 11:00 and had to wait less than 2 minutes. Once seated things moved quickly. Our server was also one of the owners and she clearly enjoyed her job. She was the friendliest and most enthusiastic server we've had in recent memory. For service she gets a 6 out of 5. My guests had breakfast and I tried the Reuben Sandwich because our sever said "we've been written up about our Reuben". It was good but perhaps she raised my expectations took much because it wasn't extraordinary; certainly better than average though. Both of my guests appeared to be quite satisfied with their breakfasts. Our coffee was certainly better than average for a cafe and the cups never ran dry. We normally don't order dessert but they made them sound so good that we ordered the bumbleberry pie. It was delicious. Not too sweet which is the mark of a good dessert. So would I drive across the city to eat here again? Probably not. Would I eat here again if I was in the Northwest? Absolutely. read more

Drove all the way to the diner (very out of my way) only to find it was closed 40 minutes prior to posted closing time. I got there at 2:50, they say they close at 3:30. I have gone to Hathaways twice now and both experiences were wonderful! The portions are huge and the food quality is next level. Since I was too full for dessert I bought some apple pie to take home and this apple pie was the best that I have ever had, clearly this pie is home made! I downloaded and logged into my yelp after long inactivity just to put this review. I wouldnt wish this food on my worst enemy. I had the breaded livers and onions, which was evidently over salted and over spiced, dry and was 90% bread 10% liver. The bacon potato soup I had was not only expensive for the portion size, it felt like I was drinking seawater. It was so bad so we notified the server, who just scoffed and claimed it was probably due to the bacon and walked away. Service was far from good but not completely terrible. Food however is very very horrific. I'd stay away from here at all costs. It is barely edible, I wouldn't even dare feed this to my dog read more

Small hidden diner owned by a very lovely lady named Pam. She finds a way to engage with each and every customer which i think is one of the reasons why people keep on coming back to this place. This is a local neighbourhood eatery that people come from everywhere to try. There's a reason for that. It's the food. It's the service. It's the pies. However, prices are high and they've gone up. For one person it's close to $20.00.for breakfast, just noting because you may not expect to pay that much. The eggs are perfect no matter how you order them. The fruit cup is not full of melon like so many are. Today's was characterized by pineapple and strawberry all fresh and we'll cut. The service is always personable and warm. Food was average at best ,never had a chicken ceasar salad where the lettuce was warmer than the prepackaged chicken before. Best if you only go as a twosome as there seems to bean issue if more people as the 3rd had to wait 5-10 minutes after the first 2 get their meals. The regular menu is a bit pricey and on some items doesnt deliver as well as it could for the price point. First of all let me start off by saying that I have been to an unhealthy amount of diners and this one has taken the cake.. or should I say pie. Yes, their pies are as delicious as they look and I usually don't go for cream pies but their coconut cream pie was like heaven in each bite. But I'll get to that later This little gem is amazing and the minute you walk in it's like home - it's like walking into your favorite aunts house who always spoils you. Everyone working their, especially the cooks wife, is so extremely kind. All of the ladies we had waiting our table were so sweet and personal which made coming here a really special experience. My boyfriend and I got the same omelet with ground beef, sausage and bacon and wow I never thought an omelet could taste that good. The meets were different from other diners and it wasn't overly greasy which made this especially tasty. Their hash was also to die for - crispy and soft and their sourdough toast.. oh my goodness.. have you ever had a thick, fresh slice of sourdough? Again, I couldn't tell you why it was so good, it was just toast but it was addictive. We weren't super full (full but not sick or gut-busting) so we decided to try their coconut cream pie - which according to our waitress was her favorite one. Like I said before , I'm not a huge fan of cream/meringue pies but this changed my mind. Light, sweet, smooth and perfect! The restaurant itself was pretty small but there wasn't a lot of people there so space didn't seem to be an issue. And like I said before the waitresses just were so sweet and friendly and I would come back just to mingle with them. Pulled into hathaways on the recommendation of yelp. Wow. It really is a hole in the wall. But so cozy inside. I was instantly very excited and felt very welcomed. The special today was the eggs benny and i was excited. I love eggs benny. The waitress said theres was the best. I have heard that from other restaurants before and was thoroughly disappointed. Not this time. I have found good eggs benny in the city finally. I cant recommend this place enough. Great hasbrowns and a big serving of fresh pineapple, strawberries and melon. Hm, what to say about Hathaway's Diner? Co-workers of mine absolutely adore this place and always seem to get take out from them. I've tried their takeout but I always prefer going to a restaurant, it's just so much better. The aroma coming from the kitchen, people watching, being served, the list goes on and on. If you've never been to Hathaway's before, it is tucked away in a random, residential area. Blink and you'll probably miss it. A buddy of mine and I decided to check them out on a Thursday for lunch. Arriving a few minutes after noon, the place was bumping with quite the diverse group of eaters. The diner is small but cozy. We had to wait a few minutes for a table but there always seemed to be people coming and going, so the wait wasn't long. They had two specials of the day. The BBQ chicken and ribs combo was tempting but $19.99 is a bit steep for lunch. I thought there'd be diner prices! Apparently not. The other lunch special was much more reasonable, with a soup included. - Thursday soup and sandwich special ($10.99) - turkey barley and the sandwich (choice of white or brown bread) with corned beef, swiss, lettuce and tomato. Note, in this picture, there's only half the sandwich as we shared. I'm not sure why but the waitress had a slight difficulty understanding that concept, haha. Anyways, I had half and it reminded me of a BLT, but with corned beef instead of bacon. It would have been better if they melted the cheese instead of having it cold. Ordinary keeps on popping into my mind. - Grilled chicken breast burger ($10.99) - a decent sized chicken breast with special sauce, pickle, red onion, tomato and lettuce. You also get a choice of fries, soup or salad - I went with onion rings but there weren't a lot of them on my plate. Could have easily ate another handful. The chicken burger and onion rings were decent but nothing you can't get elsewhere. Simple diner food indeed. I just expect more with a 93% rating on Urbanspoon. I guess north side is pretty limited in their food choices... If I come back, I'll have to try out their pies ($5.00 for a slice or $25.00 if you want to bring one home) or come on a Saturday to try their infamous eggs benny (which are only available Saturday). Would I drive out all the way north side though? Probably not. But if you work nearby, this seems like the spot, but beware of their with limited hours of 7am-4pm (closed Mondays and Sundays). read more

Small bowl of soup and sandwich $14. Sounded a bit pricey until it came to the table. Soup was full of veg, rice, barely beef etc. Very nicely seasoned. Sandwich was turkey, swiss, lettuce and tomato on toasted sour dough (you choose bread). 1/2" thick slices of light and dark meat turkey. Simple food done well. I've never personally eaten at Hathway's but I did order a pie and my experience was absolutely second to none. My boyfriend is obsessed with their coconut cream pie. So, the day I was heading out of town to see him I made arrangements to stop off at Hathaway's and pick up his favourite pie to surprise him. I checked out the website first and realized I needed to call ahead to get a whole pie. It was the day of and I was a little horrified that I was too late. But I called anyways and asked for a whole coconut cream pie. I was too late. They had most of one left but not a whole one and they were done their baking for the day. She offered to grab the remaining pie and pop a few extra pieces of other pies into the order so that I was leaving with a full pie and I said sure and then went about my day. I got to the restaurant about 230 that afternoon, gave them my name at the counter and she quickly turned to grab my order. What was handed to me was an entire, freshly baked, still warm coconut cream pie. They had made me one special knowing that I was buying it for someone who lived out of town and who dreamt of their pies. I was so excited and could not have been happier. (This was the first gift I'd ever bought for my boyfriend!) The pie was delicious, he hid it from the family and it was gone by the end of the weekend.
