You never do anything right. Nothing's ever open long enough, nothing's ever available long enough, nobody is ever accommodating, nobody ever cares about anything. There is absolutely no sense of customer service or accommodation. I can't count how many times we've gone here 15 minutes before closing to get one last pint and they were closing early. Can't count how many times customer service has been utterly useless. The food is decent, I won't say overpriced because when there is a view it's pretty, and in life you pay for pretty views. but they didn't exactly lower the prices when there was no longer a view. And so it's overpriced. Stop failing at life. You guys have a prime location next to the train stop by one of the greatest towns forming on the planet. Dun Laoghaire is just such a romantic place when the weather is right like tonight and you are treated to dinner as I was. I felt like Julia in Pretty Woman except without the whore element. Loads of folks ate alfresco on the patio area of the restaurant, we opted for inside. The place was really busy so we got a spot at the bar. Very bright and airy. After reading both Gilbert & Gilli's reviews I found myself agreeing with them on several of the points they raised and hence struggled with the stars. I did find the manager aloof and rather judgmental in a materialistic way. I know when people scan your threads to see if you have money, usually people who don't have money and like to think they do, do that. Not that we were wearing rags and obviously we passed his 'test' but I picked up on it all the same. Pretty awkward eating at the bar. Bartender was fantastic, I was driving so no drink-poos for me so I can't judge the beer, he looked a dab hand at the cocktails. We went for the starter & entree for 25. I got the Waldorf to start with chicken for main in... Damn can't remember the sauce. It tasted wine based, check the pics. Portobello mushrooms were good, side of mashed potatoes were ok. Gilli is right though about the chips - they are great, I nicked a few ;) The view of the sea did it for me. It is a well heeled crowd that go there, I see nothing wrong with people dressing up as long as people who are dressing down are not made feel inferior for it, and with that manager around you will be. Hartleys is an unsuspecting chic restaurant just by Dun Laoghaire harbour. I went for the vegetarian burger which was absolutely sublime. Really very tasty. The staff were great and a bit of fun too. They do a good value house wine in a litre caraf which helps add a bit of value as it is more expensive than usual. Not sure it's a young scene there and I missed the ability to cross the road into a funky bar or head into a nightclub. Too out of the way for me personally, but if that's your local then your in for a treat. read more

I love this restaurant. Classy ambience yet still child friendly. Fantastic beer menu with lots of Irish and American craft beers. Great selection of wines and cocktails. And all this before I've even started on the food! I had the seafood platter to start with and it was fantastic. A generous portion of mussels, crab claws and very fresh and tasty prawns - all served in a wonderful garlic broth. My main course was one of the specials - a salmon wellington and this did not fail to please. Wonderful combination of bernaise-type sauce, fantastic pastry and a serving of boiled potatoes on the side - wonderful! I finished the meal with the "Happy Birthday" cocktail that very pleasingly combined a cocktail with an ice-cream based dessert. Overall, a very enjoyable meal and a highly recommended restaurant. read more

I have eaten twice at this restaurant. Once with a friend (after which I swore myself not to return) and once with a big group of colleagues for whom I broke my vow. The first time I found the staff rude, the food expensive and the portions very small. Being only 2 people we were seated reluctantly and the waitress didn't say a word. We had the feeling we were keeping important people from some big business. The second time I liked the food and the service was nicer. Prices are still too high. They didn't have beer from the tap and when they served me my beer in a glass, they didn't bring the bottle. I like my bottled beer arriving in a bottle. Otherwise what do I know what's in the glass? I like that they have a lot of space in their, unfortunately they try to be classicistic with their fake ancient Greek statue, the triglyphs and columns. In the end it's just kitsch. Bottom line: Go there if you want to impress your wanna-be bourgeois friends, if you have too much money and little appetite, if you don't care too much about beer and if you don't mind the occasional moody staff. On a beautiful sunny Sunday evening after a day of rain we went hoping to sit outside for a drink and a snack pre-movie. We also hoped we would not run into the silly seater who gave us such a hard time on our last visit. Success! No silly seater in sight. When we arrived inexplicably no one was sitting outside, but a very helpful person said it would be no problem for us to sit there and offered to clean off a table and chairs for us. She could not have been nicer or more welcoming. We ordered some wine and a few appetizers - beef ribs and fried calamari. The beef ribs were delicious. They fell off the bone at the hint of a touch and they had a sweet, but not cloying sauce. The calamari was tender and the Thai dipping sauce was nicely spiced. Wine, good food, great company, and a beautiful view of Dun Laoghaire Harbor made for a five star experience. I look forward to going back. read more

Hartley's has just re-opened after being recently renovated. I decided to try the place out of curiousity, even if it was going to be a bit more expensive than what I would normally pay for lunch. I strolled in and was quickly greeted and seated. Decor is very elegant, if not a little sterile with all the white. I ordered one of the lunch specials, "roast in a roll" served with pumpkin soup. Very tasty! I was very impressed. That and a coffee came to €12, not too shabby! I probably looked a little out of place there. Hartley's was fancier than I expected. I was there on my lunch from work so I was wearing old jeans, a work jacket and scruffy shoes. Coupled with the fact that the roll was a little messy to eat due to the sauce, I am sure I was a sight to behold. read more

Was here for a Confirmation lunch one busy Friday. First time ever here. Large-ish group of us - about 14 including all the childer. Was very impressed and will return. We were in for Lunch. The room is lovely - high ceilings, bring, feels very welcoming and grand to be handing out in. Staff were great - very pleasant, efficient and helpful throughout the ever-busy lunch schedule and across all our varying demands! I had fish and chips as my main course, and started with whitebait. Both were genuinely delicious, and it was lovely to see the whitebait on the menu (as it's rare enough outside of Tapas bars to see that). 4 of us went there for dinner. Our guests are regulars there it was my first time. I got the impression that this was a fairly popular place back in the boom times. Still overflowing with people but I got the sense they were all reminiscing about the good auld Celtic Tiger days. I wondered if Charlie Haughey or Tony O'Reilly were going to walk in at any second. Way over priced for the food that was on offer. And what was on offer was hard to understand. I couldn't figure out from the menu what was going to be a garnish or what was a part of the entre. One bottle of wine, two non alcoholic beers was all the booze we had. Maybe if I'd had more to drink I wouldn't be as harsh in my feedback. Only two had starters. Three mains were fish, and one classic burger. Now all the food tasted fine, nothing special but ok. Served hot and quickly. And the servers were friendly and cheerful. But I'd have expected the bill to be about 33% less than what it was. I wouldn't return nor would I recommend it. read more

Excellent experience all round. Friendly reception on arrival. Nice table with good waiters in attendance. Good wine menu. Found a well priced Sauvignon Blanc and a stunning French Cabernet Merlot to accompany our meal. Starters included chilli shrimps, asparagus and halibut. Mains included a T-Bone steak, a ribeye steak and the chicken dish. Rounded off with a warm banana dread pudding with caramel icing. Will definitely return sometime soon. read more

Visited Hartley's as a special night out to celebrate the end of a fabulous weekend trip to the Dublin area from the UK. We had stayed at the Royal Marine in DL (lovely hotel, great staff) and took the DART into Dublin for ease of travel - excellent! Sadly, our visit to Hartley's on the Sunday evening proved to be less than perfect. Its setting is lovely - right by the harbour in the middle of town. The building has character from the outside and some of this has been retained within. The clientele clearly have a nautical sway to them (note the number of "deck shoes" under the tables!) The place looks clean and presentable with some nice touches. The staff were pleasant enough, if the service was a little slow. The food, however, was not good. My wife had a fillet steak that was not at all tender. I ordered a very rare t-bone because I had an appetite and fancied something good and juicy. When it arrived it looked painfully thin and dry and this was confirmed when I cut into it and found that it had actually been prepared "well done" and even then, not well. When I complained, the steak was replaced, this time a bit more juicy but still not excellent and it still looked a bit scraggy. Considering the cost (it is expensive, both for food and wine) and the setting, this proved to be our most disappointing visit to a restaurant in years. I suppose its an OK place if you like to "pose" but the food is not even average and over-priced. read more

Food here doesn't disappoint, I'm always drawn to the calamari and the battered cod. Food is fresh, well seasoned, and generally well executed, for example the batter is crispy but the fish tender! Impossible to pass up on the sundae, but it is enormous so recommend sharing it! read more

The last 2 years my girlfriend and I went to Hartleys for our anniversary. We couldn't have had nicer service both times and lovely food.

I was at Harley's recently and would like to flag something that strikes me as a bit underhanded in their treatment of customers. If you have ordered a meal costing 40 EUR on the menu, they are actually going to hand you a bill for 44 EUR. If you then look carefully again at their menu (at least as it is posted online), you can find a notice at the bottom that states: "A discretionary 10% service charge will be applied to all bills". Two comments/queries for the management: (1) In what way is it "discretionary"? (2) Wouldn't it be more honest simply to list the true prices of the items on the menu? read more
