This was a quaint little Pub in the town of Killnney. It was close to the hotel we were staying at, the Fitzpatrick Castle. The teeny tiny town was about a mile away and had a couple pubs which was surprising considering most towns in Ireland have the streets dotted with pubs. The hotel and locals said go to The Magpie and we did and had a great meal. The portions were humongous and we ordered way too much food. Of course we had to try the local version of the seafood chowder which did not disappoint as it was loaded with tons of seafood. We also got a seafood linguine. When you're surrounded by the ocean you always go for seafood! At least we do. read more

Excited to try the Parmesan and truffle oil chips but the chips arrived hot but soggy/soft. Oh well. Likely it was since the kitchen just opened that the oil wasn't hot enough or the chips were put into the oil still frozen/cool. So while the chips flavor was spot on this is more of a glitch than consistent problem. The the crab and crawfish cakes came out and they were cooked perfectly and very tasty. It was a light lunch as my friend and I shared the chips as a starter and then ordered starters for our meals. It was more than enough . The restaurant has a great view of the intersection and the shops looking towards Dalkey Castle. Inside it was clean and spacious as the tables were spaced apart to feel not close. read more

If I could give 10 stars I would! We stumbled across this place on our first night in Ireland, and even ventured back a few times just because we loved it so much. We stayed at the Kilpatrick Hotel, and loved that the pub was just down the street. The ambiance is warm, comfortable, and lighthearted. Its the perfect blend of a modern, yet traditional Irish pub. The food was incredible. The beer battered haddock fish and chips were our favorite, perfectly crisp and light, and basically melt in your mouth! Within walking distance of the Dalkey train station, this charming town and pub is one not one to be missed! read more

"Lets meet in Finnegans.... its only a stones throw from the Dart station" ...it was a good plan, it meant that within 4 mins of getting off the train I could have a pint in my hand, that is almost never a bad thing. We meet at the station and follow the plan, we wander into the pub and are greeted by about 4 million others who obviously had similar plans,. Getting served was damn near impossible and worse still, when I looked at what was on offer, it was the old reliables - Heineken, Carlsberg, Guinness and smithwicks (with a Peroni on draft for good measure)... this was not what I had in mind. So, we abandon Finnegans and wander further in-land, we find the Magpie Inn, half full with empty seats and tables but immediately more welcoming and as I looked at the beer taps I heard angles begin to sing. "Stop singing" I said to Shaun, you're distracting me. I noted he had a good voice though. There were maybe 30 small batch / craft beers on tap, lots of lovely ales and IPAs. we took a seat by the bar and started. Half way through we order fish & chips.... true, I had a longing for ribs or wings but you cant have it all... the lack of BBQ type foods was the ONLY thing I could gripe about, the place is faultless with brilliant and attentive staff to boot. A fantastic spot that I would highly recommend for food especially brunch as their options are great. I had the smoke salmon and creme fraiche omelet, it was delicious. For dessert I had the bread and butter pudding with a scoop of white chocolate ice-cream, again wonderful. Great varied menu which is very reasonable. The only minus for me was the coffee, too hot and tasted burnt. Plenty of little alcoves. The front area is popular for people to drink and dine alfresco in the good weather and better still the large windows open out so you can dine inside but have a great view of the cute village and some nice sea air. Good beer selection, Brewdog and Trouble Brewing for example are on tap. Very clean bathrooms and the paintings of dogs in military gear is very cute. The modern font noting the name of the bar and bathrooms etc mixed with traditional furnishings gives this spot a great modern feel yet retaining an aged character. Very like Mulligans Grocer, even the staff dress in the old style long aprons. Extremely pretty beer garden out back too. Oh and free wifi! read more

What's not to love? Such a cozy little spot in one of the cutest little towns I've ever seen! The perfect blend of traditional and modern: all the charm of an old pub, with all of the class of a modern one. Very warm and welcoming, great staff, love everything about it. I ordered the mushroom risotto and it's literally the best risotto I've ever had. It's rare that risotto is done right, and this one was just perfect! Quite a surprise, not what you expect when ordering in a pub, but everything was delicious. That was the general consensus from our whole group; chowder, oysters, mussels, crab cakes, everything that was amazing! I also enjoyed a warm Port, which was very good. Made with fresh spices and good Port, it was the perfect drink for a cold evening. Prices are similar to Dublin city center, but the quality of the food makes it worth it. I would be lucky to live in Dalkey and have this be my local, it's such a nice spot and somewhere we'll stop by any time we're in town. Hope to have the opportunity to try more things on their menu very soon! read more

Stopped in for a BLT sandwich on Monday. Asked for onion on sandwich. Despite asking for raw onion and being asked again by waiter did I want raw or fried onion, I got fried (or rather poached) onion atop a barely toasted sandwich with a grand lump of back bacon, lettuce and tomato. The recipe for a BLT is as follows; 1. Crispy streaky rasher (preferably Spanish) 2. Cos lettuce 3. Beef tomato 4. Mayonnaise 5. Onion optional Spread mayonnaise on lighted toasted bread (preferably rye). Add lettuce, add bacon, add tomato and optional onion. Spread mayonnaise on other slice of lighted toasted bread. Cut into a diagonal shape and add a pickle on the side. Total time to make -3 mins. You're welcome. read more

During our visit, my father and I must have ventured over to the The Magpie Inn nearly every other night or so because we just loved it so. The beer was delicious! One of our favorites was the wicklow wolf. The food was even better...everything, oysters, the goat cheese sandwich, tomato soup, mushroom risotto, all memorable and filling! The ambiance varied on the time of day, of course, but we had fantastic experiences during all hours and sincerely enjoyed the company of the staff. A few really made our trip special :)) read more

We ordered and split one order of fish and chips and an order of Mediterranean vegies. Just the perfect amount of food for for about 20 Euro's. The fish tasted fresh and the battery was nice and fluffy and tasty. The cops were also hot and fresh. They were great until the last one ! The variety of veggies was impressive and delighted us as we have had our fill of pure pub food. Overall, the service was promoted and friend and not overbearing. Lots of men in there! Now this is my first time writing a review for somewhere when I have not actually sampled any of the wares. The story is that I popped in here for a quick look (due to a disaster meal in another restaurant close by who shall be nameless but they could be dispensed with in Dalkey and rarely missed). The plan was for me to see if there was a table available where we could finish our meal - however it was packed with a great buzz. I had a quick look at the menu which would be Irish with a twist. Later my 80 year old mother had a look inside and came out with the comment 'It's full of men!' which has to be a good sign. Great news for Dalkey to have a good pub which serves good food (word on the street) with a bizzy buzzy atmosphere. Proper review when food sampled! read more

In Ireland for vacay, lots of places to choose from. Went to Magpie Inn based on Yelp review. On word "Amazing"! We had starters -Salad, Shrimp, Dipping bread. All were absolutely great. Also ordered half Chicken (May be best chicken I ever had) I don't normally like chicken. Not to mention the wide selection of beers and drinks. The thing that was best by FAR was the service and the cleanliness of the place. I don't like gross places and this place gets five stars. If I could give more I would. Great job Magpie, great job. As one who has been venturing to Dalkey (from Dublin city) for a number of years and now lives in Dalkey, I can say a place like this has been long overdue---and is now my "local" while still bowing in reverence to other longtime pubs in the area I have frequented over the years. What's really nice, is although the place is relatively new, it has the feel that it's been in Dalkey for awhile. The design is low key and traditional to a degree, but not overdone as some pubs in the area can be---and certainly not as staid and traditional as other wonderful pubs in Dalkey or Dublin in general. They aren't trying to be like everyone else and that's one reason I like the place. It's warm and inviting. The u-shaped shiny copper topped bar makes it easy to sit and people-watch if you are so-inclined--- and the very subtle lovely designed lamps just add to the warmth and a certain coziness to the space. Other reasons I like: 1. Great food. Not cheap pub grub, but tasty, creative and ideal for a weekend brunch-lunch or dinner any day of the week; although I'd say don't go too late for dinner on Friday's or Saturday's as the place gets rather busy and you may end up feeling like you should not be eating. I like the fact they change up the menu every now and then. The Moroccan lamb burger is always on the menu though---juicy and very very tasty. But don't go looking for a hamburger as I've yet to see one on the menu---perhaps it's because the chef does such a great job with the lamb version. And if you are vegetarian don't worry. You won't get bland steamed vegetables, but something you can sink your teeth into with a nice glass of wine. The eggs florentine are fabulous. 2. Great selection of beer and wine. Much better than selections at other pubs. For sure the wine selection is a cut way above most pubs anywhere in the area. And just because it's Dalkey does not mean you have to pay a lot. You can if you want---but you can still get a decent glass for 5 euro. 3. Friendly staff and efficient service. We never have to wait long to get a drink or be served. This place is run in a very professional manner and the owner seems to be there every time we show up. 4. Dignified clientele. Not stuffy in any way. Not too young or too old. Thank god no drunks or hen-party types to date. I hope it stays that way. 5. Location. Easy walk from where I live and probably for most folks in the Dalkey "metropolitan area." Otherwise an easy walk from the DART if you are down this way on a day trip from the city. It will be interesting to see how the place does in the summer when other pubs that cater to the south-facing sun worshippers have got their chairs out. Even though sunny weather is elusive in any Irish summer lately, it is inviting to sit out and watch the world go by in Dalkey with a pint or glass of wine. Ended up in this warm pub on a Sat night. At the end of a photowalk it was suggested that we end up in this pub as it was near the Dart station for those unfamiliar with the area. Anyway, the atmosphere was great, we even got - slowly but surely - 3 tables together. Looking around we could have got a snug - I like snugs - but anywhere in this pub would have been grand. There was a real fire, with briquettes (not turf, so not aiming at being a tourist pub) and the customers and staff seemed friendly enough. The only real downfall was the price of food. I asked for the menu, looked, left it down.... same with the next two guys in our group. Yes it is Dalkey, so I suppose it was acceptable. Worth going for the atmosphere and a few drinks. read more

I'd consider this pub my local these days. They have a fantastic range if craft beers and are always willing to let you try a sample of the beers on tap if you're unsure what to drink. The food in general here is very good however they do have there bad days when it comes to the kitchen getting food out on time! Brunch menu is also great here but the full Irish is a bit of a let down! I find it's usually left under the hot plate for far to long before it's brought out to the table! In general the menus will please most people. If I was to say one thing to the Managment of the Magpie it would be "decided if you are a pub or a restaurant. Pick one and focus on it." read more

It took me until now to finally go here - probably mainly due to the rumour that it is quite expensive here. I didn't have food but had a glance at their menu and it actually didn't seem to be especially expensive but rather ok to me. Mains at an average of €15 which might be less in places but still not too bad. I was here due to a tweetup of about 20 people and they decided to treat us to examples of their nibbles. But it was rather Tapas and very good. So I definitely will go back and have more tastings. Other than that I liked the atmosphere, comfortable seats and lovely staff. Great bar in the heart of Dalkey village. They have managed to achieve what a lot of pubs try and fall short which is to mix a traditional pub with a modern decor and food. They don't just manage they do a great job. The food is great very tasty and local but it doesn't take over the pub. Still a great bar with a good atmosphere - they have a really good selection of drinks including craft beers - well worth a look read more

I used to be a fan of the Magpie until we had an awful experience there. They have a policy of not serving people under the age of 23, which I understand. However, we used to go here a couple of times a month and knew a lot of the staff by name. One night, there were around 12 of us there, all of us buying drinks. We were all over 23 at the time, except 2 of the girls who were 22. We'd all been there loads of times but on this occasion when the girls and I went to the bar, the girls were asked their age by the manager. They told him they were 22 and he told them he couldn't serve them. I politely explained that the rest of us were over 23 and that we were regular customers. I asked could we stay as we weren't making much noise or causing any problems whatsoever. I was told that we could stay but that the girls wouldn't be served. I explained that we weren't going to stay if our friends weren't allowed to buy drinks. At this point I was told 'That's your problem, not mine'. I was stunned and tried to explain the situation again, assuming he'd misunderstood. I was curtly informed that this was 'nothing to do with me. I don't care what you do'. I couldn't believe it. Needless to say, we all left and haven't been back since. read more

Went here for lunch and a drink with a friend on 3/8/15, one of my locals! Always liked the cosy decor, floors, and layout of the place. Sat at the bar, ordered a drink each, and i had the chorizo, cheese and tomato omelette w/chips. Absolutely delicious!!!!! Fast, pleasant service. My friend asked could she have a West Coast Cooler, which they don't serve. (Small annoyance with some of these craft pubs) Anyhow, total for a pint of McIvors cider, sparkling water, and a large plate of delicious food - €17. A local gal at the shop recommended we add magpie to our plans (really she planned an impromptu crawl) nice beer selection--some of our faves from back home as well as local crafts here). Enjoying the bustling sound of locals, great drinks and service--I hated to request a remake of my rye old fashioned to be less sweet but it was so good second time round. Also, I'd never heard of Kassler but quickly googled it and it sounded great even if Wikipedia's picture was lackluster--I've come to Dublin and had a gourmet version of German food. Updated from my original stance, the food has improved quite a bit which now which has popped it back up to my top choice for food about Dalkey... I am a fan of their breakfast/brunch menu and there recent introduction of an early offers great value... Little cosy, warm pub that is both a must do for tourists yet has a regular flow of locals. Staff are top notch, super friendly bunch of folk and whether I sit at the bar or grab a table, they greet and chat with us making us always feel welcome. So much so, I drink quite a lot at their bar which says it all :-) read more

Hubby and I shared fish and chips plus a side of meditarranean vegetables. Crispy, crunchy and hot battered fish, generous serving of chips, small serving of mushed peas. Veggies were half a sweet potato, several pieces of yellow and red bell pepper, pieces of onion, whole small carrots, all nicely sauteed. Very good meal and a generous serving for 2 hungry people. Excellent range of IPAs, which are my favourite. I particularly enjoyed the Wicklow Wolff, creamy fresh head with just the right amount -- not too much -- of hoppy flavour. Stopped in at the Magpie Inn last December for lunch to take a break from searching for venues for our upcoming wedding. As soon as we tasted the food we both said: this the place! Best decision we every made, Jimmy and team pulled off an amazing job to make the most amazing meal for 60 people. The guests were raving about the food, Michelin star quality, no doubt. The roasted veggies, succulent beef, immaculately prepared fish, try it all, you wont be disappointed. Excellent wine list too. Manager Jimmy Smith is an absolute gentleman and took care of us on the day, he couldn't have done more for us. If you are in the area as a local or just passing through, make this a stop, and make sure you try the food as well as having a drink, you wont be disappointed. read more

A fantastic place for craft beers and ciders but it lacks a little bit of soul. Although I like most of the decor individually, it doesn't seem to work, it could do with being a little cosier. I ate here when it opened a few years back and wasn't impressed, but that doesn't mean it hasn't improved since. The staff are great, it is a wait service bar, (presumably because the denizens of Dalkey can't be expected to go and stand at the bar like normal folk). It also has a substantial wine list, but with a craft beer selection like this I haven't got around to trying any. read more

After cycling from Blackrock to Killiney, upon my return I stopped at the Magpie inn to treat myself. I had a paté burger and it was fabulous. It was moist and flavourfull and the chips were cooked to perfection not squishy in the middle. I like lager so the waiter recommended a Japanese beer (wish I could remember the name) which was very good too. All in all great value for the money. Now the Magpie in is a regular stop for me when I am cycling through Dalkey. read more
