sunday brunch with my girlies at 1:30 pm, the kind of afternoon stitched together by laughter, easy conversation, and the soft light of early fall. the weather called for rain, but thankfully, mother nature was kind, and the trees outside brushed everything in golds, oranges, browns and reds, a perfect picturesque autumn day. hart house has been part of burnaby's dining scene since 1988, tucked inside a 1906 tudor style home overlooking deer lake. the space has been renovated and feels bright and timeless, tall windows framing the water, a warm wooden bar lined with bottles, a fireplace glowing gently. it's the kind of place that invites you to slow down, put your phone away (except for photos), and just be present. i ordered the shakshuka, bold, smoky sauce, one egg perfectly runny, the other slightly sad and overdone, but the flavours still held together. the potatoes were crisp on the outside and soft inside, just the right balance against the richness of the dish. everyone at the table seemed happy with their choices, smiles and small bites weaving through our conversation. our server was kind and attentive without hovering, topping up our waters frequently, the kind of quiet presence that keeps everything flowing naturally. as we lingered over coffee and shared desserts, sunlight streamed across the table, it felt like more than just brunch. it was a pause, a little reset, friendship, warmth, and that feeling of being exactly where you need to be, grateful for this time together. hart house still knows how to make a meal feel like a memorable moment.

Amazing to go in the spring/summer when the weather is nice and you can sit outside. We came on a Saturday dinner in May and the weather was beautiful, and the lawn is nice with a great view of the lake. Our server was very friendly and nice, and the food was great as well. I recommend the vol au vent and the pavlova!

Came here for Happy Hour on Saturday and it was pretty quiet. We sat in the sun room which was breezy on a hot day which was nice. With four people, we ordered the beef burgers and a Caesar salad. The salad was pretty tasty and we though the burgers were great too (albeit a bit pricey!). The fries that came with the burgers could be better as they seemed a bit hard. Overall, the ambiance was nice and the server came to check on us a few times throughout our meal so that was also very nice.

A group of us came here for a birthday celebration. I've lived in Burnaby for decades & finally dined here for the first time. Food: 5/5 - some of us had the 3 course dine out Burnaby while the remainder ordered a la carte. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their food. I had the seared steelhead fish which was cooked to perfection. Checkout the photos of the entrees we much tasted better than the actual photos. Service: 5/5 - it was a sloow start to get even our bread. We had 6:45 pm reservations but didn't eat right away. Our server did a good job asking if we needed anything. Ambiance: 4/5 located in an older style house, we had the room to ourselves. They can seat small or larger groups. Our dining room had a gas fireplace which added ambience to the place. Maybe they were short staffed? There's free parking out front.

Came for Father's Day celebration. Beautiful house transformed into a restaurant. I love how the heritage character of the house was preserved and yet it didn't look old at all. Serve staff was nice and attentive. Food is good! Especially loved the Back Ribs. I've never enjoyed back ribs because it's usually dry and smothered with BBQ sauce. However this ribs are very tender! Every dish we ordered was good!

We came for dineout Vancouver 2024 and the food was pretty mediocre. The fiancé got a chicken liver pate and the duck -- those were the main thing he got that differed from me -- and he got food poisoning after. Which can happen due to bad luck, but it wasn't the best experience for a date night. I did like my soup though! But my main of the fish was pretty dry and the polenta was very dry and plain to eat.

Been at Hart House for a wedding before but it was outdoors so have never been inside. A friend suggested going to Hart House for Dine out so was excited to see what the old manor looks like. First off, you step in and a hearty fireplace greets you. If that doesn't give one a homey feel I don't know what will! The host greeted us with warmth, checked our vaccination records, and we were happy that all the tables were very spaced out so we felt very covid-safe. Our server was very warm, attentive, and friendly. We were off to a good start! For $48/person, my two friends and I decided to all order from the Dine Out menu. The actual dine out menu varied slightly and offered more choices than what was posted on the Dine Out Vancouver website, which was a nice surprise! I ordered the Humboldt squid, Braised Lamb Ragu Pappardelle, and the sticky toffee pudding. The Humboldt squid was a generous portion cooked in a Mediterranean style in which the squid was barely rubbery in texture. Solid start to the meal! Next came the braised Lamb Ragu Pappardelle, which I had previously smelled the delicious aroma entering into the dining room. The dish was a huge portion and the lamb was very hearty but did not taste gamey. It was a great pasta dish and definitely hit the spot. Finishing off the meal was the sticky toffee pudding, which was quite generous in size. I'm usually not much of a dessert person but ate this entire pudding up as it wasn't overly sweet and I loved the sweet and salty flavour contract profile. Very solid 3 course dine out menu and look forward to going back to Hart House again one day!

Located within an Historical house overlooking Deer lake, even without any photographs, you can start to picture the setting! Its the kind of restaurants that brings you to a different time & space once you step inside, stone fireplace welcomes you ( especially in cooler days, it will immediately warms your heart ), Hostesses are all very helpful and gracious, the times that we are here they have all been extra helpful with our request! Menu highlights: - Spaghettini Ala Scoglio ... always al dente and cooked to perfection varies depending on what the Chef has on hand that day ... - Roasted Chicken Parmigiana ... Tender & succulent! A slice of pancetta between the skin & the chicken was the secret of this dish!! Topped with a slice of Caciocavallo Cheese elevated the whole taste sensation! Try it!! - Rosemary Parmesan Fries ... need I say more!! - House Made Ricotta Doughnuts ... make sure you have it!! I like to commend all the service staffs here who are all very professional and efficient, they make you feel relaxed and at home, special mention to Andrew & Alia!!

Reservations highly recommended. Parking lot up front of the restaurant. Came here for brunch on a Sunday. We were seated right away. Wait staff is very friendly. Had the house special seafood with squid ink pasta. Very flavorful and generous portions. For dessert, it's limited pumpkin donut with cream cheese dip. Sublime. Dessert #2 cheesecake. Not too dense with yummy sauces.

Unfortunately I was only able to complete one year of Swedish due to the timing of my graduation, and I couldn't take the second year Swedish class after I graduated because the course was only offered during the day, which interfered with having to work. However, I found out that Swedish (and the other Nordic languages) was offered at the Scandinavian Community Center, and took some classes over the years. The teacher was nice, but the quality of the instruction was nothing compared to UBC. But it was definitely better than nothing, and the price was very reasonable. The last time I took lessons at the Scandinavian Community Center was years ago, probably 2013. I'd love to take more lessons, but taking transit there is a nightmare. The community center is in the middle of nowhere, and there are two busses you can take from Metrotown Station, the #110 and #144 buses. The bus ride is quite long, 20 to 30 minutes (because they take these meandering routes), the timing is such that they arrive way before the class starts or minutes after it starts, and the two buses leave Metrotown within minutes of each other, so you miss one, and you miss both. And in the evening, the timing doesn't align with the class's end time, so you either have to leave class early or wait for half an hour in the dark, at an unlit bus stop, that's just a bus stop sign stuck in a ditch on the side of a super busy highway. Perhaps things are different than when I took lessons, but back then, to walk to and from the bus stop to the center (which was at night, as the class starts at 7pm and ends at 9pm), there was no sidewalk so you had to walk on the side of a busy highway and hope a car didn't hit you. It was particularly terrifying when it was pitch black (there was no lighting) and raining. I'd love to give the Scandinavian Community Center more stars, and I'd love to take more Swedish lessons, but the location is horrible and not reasonably transit accessible, and the instruction is only so-so, so not worth it for me to make the trek.

So, imagine my surprise when I was asked to visit the local office at the WeWork building in nearby Station Square, Burnaby! Say what? WeWork (yep, the same company that's been in news for mostly the wrong reasons for quite some time) provides workspace and co-working solutions that are used by companies, big and small. I'd read a lot about their offerings, but had never been to any WeWork office till I entered the premises of the one in Burnaby. So, I was quite amazed at how neat the entire setup was. Located higher up in the same building that houses famous restaurants like Cactus Club Cafe and Earls Kitchen + Bar, WeWork Office Space & Coworking is right next to Metropolis at Metrotown. Talk about prime real estate! There are ample parking spots in the structure just a few steps away from the office entrances, so that's one big monkey off your back if you're driving to work here! The reception area is pretty, colorful and spacious, and the staff that greeted me on arrival were cheerful and friendly. The place has quite a few office spaces, conference rooms, phone booths, a well-stocked kitchen, a wellness room, free coffee and what not. There are ample touch-free sanitizer dispensers, and it is apparent that lots of effort goes in for keeping the entire space spic and span. Happy that I got to check out this cool place on the pretext of getting my laptop fixed. The only downside for me is possibly having to lose the option of working from home when the pandemic situation gets better because there's an office location in the city. Sighs. But, hey, at least the commute won't be that bad because the place is right next door, plus (and that's a big plus!) there's free parking! Hoping I won't have to go back there anytime soon though
