We were fortunate enough to have the good sense to book our wedding at Harpo's for our 46 guests on Feb 24/24. My first point of contact was Lisa, who was an absolute professional from start to finish. Everything on my wish list became reality with Lisa's help. We were able to have the marriage ceremony, Cocktail Reception and Dinner in the same room which was very important to us to avoid travel in the event of bad winter weather. The room was beautifully arranged and the fireplace was a welcomed addition with the -12° temps outside. Our guests can't say enough nice things about the entire experience. The food was beyond expectations, beautifully presented and thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. The dessert options were works of art, I wish I had thought to take pictures! Our sincere compliments to the Chef of course. The entire staff at Harpo's worked together so beautifully to make this evening a dream come true for us. Harpo's incredible service and their patience maneuvering through a fun loving crowd, all the while, taking care of another wedding in an adjoining room is noteworthy! The evening was made even more special when we welcomed a few guests from the other wedding after they complimented us for knowing how to party. Amazing. Probably one of the best meals I've had. Seriously. I bought the surf and turf 3 course meal for $99 on the Friday before valentines for my hubby and I. I'd never been here before but saw some great reviews on my Durham Region Eats Facebook group. The restaurant was really nice inside, very clean and classy looking. I got takeaway so I didnt stay, but would come back as the booths look comfy and there is a fireplace. First off, the waitress helping me (her name was Jamiee-Lea) was SO NICE. She gave the best service. She went above and beyond. Im 8 months pregnant and offered me gingerale or a water while I waited. She also offered to carry my takeout for me. Secondly. The food was phenomenal and you can't beat the price. Ceasar salad dressing was homemade and probably the best I've ever had. Big chunks of real parm. The meal was literally unreal. Lobster, steak cooked perfectly, butter, vegetables. Great garlic bread. Cheesecake is amazing. I will 100% be back. read more

My Nan didn't feel like cooking one rare evening and insisted she take my father and myself out for dinner. Having not planned this in advance, we didn't know where to go when my dad suggested Harpo's. Harpo's has 2 levels, the main floor has booths and large tables for groups. The lower level is at the front with all of the large windows. It's nice and bright! Since Nan wasn't a fan of stairs we opted for a booth on the main floor. Our server warned us that 2 large groups were coming in shortly, but that was alright. The booths were HUGE and very cozy. It was like sitting on a high-backed couch. We could not see other customers in the booths beside us. It made it private and acted as a sound barrier. The décor was very elegant. I definitely felt under-dressed. It was supposed to be a casual meal dangit! Our server had her hands full. We arrived shortly before the 2 large groups, but the service didn't lapse; our orders were there in a timely fashion. Harpo's has a fabulous $30 Feature Menu. Most of their dishes range from $20-$30, so why not? It includes an appetizer, main and dessert. My dad and I opted for the Feature Menu. We started off with Bruschetta and the Daily Soup, Onion and Parmesan. My dad loved the soup. It was like French Onion without the bread and cheese; a nice, light app! The bruschetta was on crisp French loaf and topped with the classic diced tomatoes, basil and parmesan cheese combo. Yum! Onto the mains. My grandmother went with Chicken Linguine. It was piled high and topped with large pieces of chicken in a garlic tomato sauce. The size of that dish had doggy bag written all over it. She couldn't believe how much chicken there was! My dad went with the Peppercorn Steak. Season and cooked to order, there was not a morsel left on his plate. I chose the Fresh Atlantic Salmon. It was flaky and seasoned with a lemon base, I would order it again. Not to mention it was served on a plate shaped like a fish. :D There's always room for dessert. We went with the Cherry Cheesecake and the Strawberries Romanoff. The cheesecake was light and the cherries were tart; a great finish to a savoury meal. I want to make Strawberries Romanoff at home. It was delightful. Then again, eating anything out of a martini glass instantly makes it fun. Strawberries, melted ice cream, cinnamon and toasted almonds in a martini glass = win. I understand why there were so many large groups there! It's a great place with good service and a good atmosphere. I'd go there for my next special occasion! read more

Me & my fiancé received a gift card for this restaurant. We were hesitant because when we had mentioned it to some friends, they made a face as if going here would be a decision we'd regret. We got there right after they opened, and let me start off by saying their parking lot+ walk to the front of the restaurant was really awkward. There is a very narrow passage for cars to enter the parking lot in the back. But once you get out of your car, you have to walk that very same path to enter the establishment. Which causes an issue when you and a car are on the path. Anyways, we entered the restaurant and there was a really strange smell, not sure what it was but it was like a dirty mop scent. Once we got past that, we were sat in a booth and given some delicious garlic bread by our server Beverly ( she was great!). The bread was so good she brought it out twice :) I ordered their onion+Parmesan soup to start. It was okay, very onion-y (obviously), but some of the onion were hard and chewy. And there wasn't enough Parmesan! I got their seafood fettuccini as an entree, my fiancé got their chicken linguini with a rosé sauce (instead of the tomato sauce). The food took a while to come. I had mentioned to the server how quick the restaurant had seemed to fill up. It was crazy. The food was delicious, really delicious. And the serving? HUGE. Im talking, we ate the rest for breakfast the next day! I would recommend this place 100%. Packed house, great food and service. You can't ask for more. We were there last week. The place is lovely. Christine, our server was really nice, not pushy ... made us feel welcome and appreciated. The food was tremendous. I had prime rib and a Caesar salad. Both were perfectly done. My husband had Saganaki (he loves it and pronounced it perfect. This was followed by a peppercorn steak that he truly enjoyed. The side vegetables we done perfectly. My husband and I had dinner here recently with another couple. When we walked in, there was no one there to greet us. We looked around awkwardly for a while and decided to walk around the restaurant looking for our friends. We found them and asked them if there was somewhere to hang our coats, they said there was a small area in the front. No one was in the dining room so my husband hung our coats for us. Oh yeah - the coat closet was also a makeshift messy office, the front of the restaurant for all guests to see. Looking at the menu, the entrees range from $28-55, most in the $39 range. Fine. I don't mind paying that kind of money for quality. I used to work in the restaurant industry so I understand high costs - when the quality is there. We ordered Caesar salads. The dressing was way too garlicky. My friend ordered a garden salad. There was lots of dressing pooling at the bottom of her salad bowl. For a $9 salad, not acceptable. The entrees were actually well done, but there could have been larger side portions (1 1/2 baby potato + 3 slices of pepper for $42? Ok. The peach Melba dessert was literally canned peaches with store bought vanilla ice cream. Hm. I'm most surprised at the service. No one there to greet us. When we sat down, the server finally came, and said, "what do you want to drink?" No, "hello, welcome, is this your first time here? I'm so and so, I'll be taking care of you". Both times she came to take our order she just said, "I'll take your order?" No, "how are you doing with the menu? Any questions for me? Are you ready?" It was all extremely abrupt and not professional. When our food came, the male server came over and said, "do you guys want pepper?" As an ex-server and cook for fine dining restaurants that charge that kind of money for food, you say, "would anybody like fresh ground pepper?" People do not go out to eat at restaurants just to eat. They go for the special experience a restaurant and servers and chefs give them. Given that you can have a BETTER experience for LESS money at milestones, for example, people will stop going to Harpos. I sincerely hope they step up their game. read more

I was invited here an Engagement Party yesterday and was in a room of 40 catered. The service tried hard but was off the mark on servings of portions. 8 bruschetta for 10 guests, bread was late with minimal butter. Roast beef was overdone and cool. We had to keep asking for water refills as the room was hot and stuffy. Dessert was pretty sparse, piece of peach ,whipped cream, and spoonful of icecream. Coffee was not offered to half the table. My how the mighty have fallen. Decided to pick Harpos this year for our annual fancy dinner we do with another couple. Picked Harpos based on previous experiences. Made a reservation for Saturday night. Arrived on time, asked if we could be seated at one of the two booths you walk by at the front of the resturant, was told everything was booked. Left 2 hours later and the booths were still unused, Strike one. Asked for an old fashioned with a nice Bourbon was told Jim Beam was there best, tasted it and it was just Jim Beam with ice, Strike 2. Ordered, prices were actually resonable. Got the surf and turf, not bad. Friends wife got the rack of lamb with looked and tasted like it was grilled right on the coals, what actually happened was the grill wasn't scraped properly so the rack was crusted with black bits of carbon. Strike 3 Special note my wife had the chicken parm and felt sick the whole next day. Used to be a great resturant maybe it was just an off night will try again in the new year read more

So me and my wife decide to go out for dinner last minute on a Saturday night. Where should we go ? We always hit the same spots where we know we will get great value for our money and good food. So my wife says what about Harpo's in Oshawa ? Looks nice from the outside and we always wanted to try it. Using my trusted Yelp app am able to get us in for a 7:00 pm dinner. That should have been my first clue but thought maybe that someone had cancelled and that I was able to get that table. Before I continue let me say that I rarely complain or write reviews about restaurants...more to come on this. So for the sake of your time I will skip on some of the other things that were wrong with this place, like a dirty Martini that was made by a waitress who clearly didn't understand what that was and how it should be served. So the restaurant is clean and inviting when you come in but too bright for my liking and a little sparsely decorated. So we meet our waitress who seems to have ants in her pants and constantly moves around while she's speaking with us. We get a drink order in and after receiving our drinks she brings a delicious basket of warm garlic bread. We decide to order and my wife orders the Caesar Salad and I order the Escargot. Easy right ? Ok so right after we order the food my wife excuses herself to use the washroom and before she even makes it to the door her salad is dropped on the table by our waitress , also more to come on this. Upon her return I tell her to go ahead and start since I eat faster than her and that mine should be up shortly since the restaurant is not that busy. The salad looked like something out of a soup kitchen, wilted pieces, little croutons and no bacon.....No bacon in a Caesar Salad ... really? Ok, so she eats some of it and while we are chatting I see our waitress aimlessly walking around like a lost puppy. Finally after twenty minutes I finally decide to ask her where the hell is my food. Once she was able to take the "holy crap I forgot about your table" look off her face she goes to the kitchen and comes back out to let me know that someone must have scooped my escargot for another table and that she has put a rush order for mine to come. Five minutes later she comes back apologizing and drops a plate of garlic shrimps with cheese in front of me with one shrimp missing from the plate (plate had six dedicated spots like an escargot plate) and leaves. Ok so now it's time to speak with someone in charge since our waitress is clearly not aware of what the hell is going on around her. BTW we had already ordered our main courses (seafood pasta for my wife and Rack of Lamb medium rare for me). So the hostess comes over and I explain to her our predicament ....she apologizes and informs us that she will take them off the bill and goes to reorder my escargot (40 minutes after my original order). Well at least she stayed in the kitchen until my order was done . When she returned I specifically asked her to ensure that our mains were not sitting under a hot lamp for the last half hour waiting to be picked up by our clueless waitress who seemed to have been more occupied with starting her closing ritual instead of paying attention to her tables. As I start to eat my app the hostess returns with our main and says ...."well they just came up so wanted to ensure that they didn't sit so I brought them out right away for you".....lies ! Plates were hot like they had been sitting under the heat lights for a good half hour and the lamb was overdone and dry but the potatoes under them cold and softball like ....what happens to potatoes when they sit too long.....My wife's pasta was hot but pasta was overdone and quite tasteless......BTW our waitress is still lost inside the restaurant and still trying to close the place down..... it's 9:00pm on Saturday night. I picked at my plate for a bit and decided to just eat the bread that was served to us when we first sat down and ordered another glass of wine to drown my disappointment. OK let me get off my soap box and tell you how I really feel .....if you are going to charge $42.00 (again don't mind paying) for a Rack of Lamb you better make sure it's done right ! Only reason why I gave them one star is because I didn't have the option of giving them none . I am leaving a bunch of stuff out because they don't deserve my time going on about this place ...stay away. read more

We celebrated my daughters 21st surprise birthday at Harpo's with 15 guests - a great experience for all. The set menu choices were all delicious. The house salad I would definitely order again. From the onion soup that was a real hit with my mother-in-law who is our soup connoisseur, to the roast beef, chicken, and salmon entrees, everyone enjoyed the dinner. We had one of the party rooms and it was set up just beautifully - elegant and spotless. The staff was very accommodating. We had a change in the number of guests and settings needed to be re-organized to suit. The pace of serving was well timed and we did not feel rushed. THE GOOD, THE BAD, THE UGLY Here are the facts. The good: a neat kind of charming old place, with an open barbeque. The food is good and for what it is it is well priced. The staff and service are excellent. The bad: It takes a long time for the main course to show up, the parking is terrible as it is down a long narrow lane way into the back lot, and worse once parked you have to make your long journey all the way back to the front of the restaurant through the narrow lane and hope no cars are coming into the parking lot or your life is at risk. Now the ugly: The staff have no respect or care to protect the customer's health. For example, one waitress dropped a part of a dessert on the floor and then picked it up and served it. Another was serving a flaming cheese appetizer, she squeezed the lemon onto the food through her dirty hands. Almost like she was washing her hands onto the food. read more

Main was mediocre and portions were small considering the price point. Worst part is even though we had a set menu, it took 90 mins from time of order to main course arriving. I held my daughter's baptism here on July 15. We had a party of 35. The food overall was decent although some of the steaks were overcooked to our liking, and for a pen that we found in our salad...A PEN! The worst was the service. The wait staff we had we're terrible. We had two assigned wait staff who were rude and rough. They refused to make mixed drinks for my party, were rude and igored other requests. My brother had an emergency and had to leave just before the main course and they ignored my request to get him a take-away container stating "main course will be here soon." Also after dinner we were told they did not or would not serve espresso. My mother-in-law was told they only had 3 cups!?!?! I don't know what kind of excuse that is. These were things that we made sure they would serve when we booked the restaurant. So when it came down to the bill I could not even give a lesser tip as they included gratuities in the bill. read more

Went to Harpo's for our 30th Wedding Anniversary - my husband proposed to me there in 1987 (it was called Chateau de Cadillac back then). The meal was AMAZING, and the culmination was a dessert with a candy heart that the owner/chef made to put in my dessert to celebrate our anniversary (I had told him it was our anniversary when I made the reservation). I HIGHLY recommend Harpo's to ANYONE who is looking for fine dining in the Oshawa area. My meal was very tasty, and the chef went over and above to make sure it was, despite my pepper allergy. As a side note, the owner told us that he probably prepared our food for us back on the Valentine's Day in 1987 that my husband proposed... he was working at Chateau de Cadillac back when he was younger, and now he owns Harpo's! read more
