The carpaccio was fine, pleasant but fairly straightforward, but everything else we ordered was excellent The octopus was tender, and hearty, paired nicely with potatoes, hummus, some greens, and capers. It was well-balanced and satisfying without feeling heavy. The steak came out a perfect medium-rare and juicy. The nut topping on the fish added a really nice crunch, contrasting beautifully with the soft, tender flesh of the fish. And then there was the duck: the clear standout of the night. It was beautifully cooked and seasoned. The fat kept it incredibly juicy without feeling greasy. The charred cabbage on the side added a subtle smokiness that tied everything together perfectly. Every bite honestly made me happier and happier. Getting to the restaurant was a little confusing at first, but once you're there, it's absolutely worth it. I feel like there could've been more zucchini for the price point Peppercorn steak: ($78) 8.5/10 Very tender and well-cooked steak. I couldn't really taste much of a peppercorn flavor in the sauce though. I prefer my steak on the saltier side so I asked for some salt and they gave me a small bowl of flakey sea salt (my favourite!). I found this place on TikTok like many other spots but unlike others, Watercolour did not disappoint. My only suggestion for this restaurant would be that they didn't have a lunch menu when I was there OR it wasn't presented to us, because I see it on their website currently. At the time when I was there, I really thought they could pivot to add a lunch menu, as not everyone wants to be paying $75-$100 for a lunch (which was my case when I went for lunch over summer time). Here's what we got between three of us during lunch: Zucchini Chips 5/5 $26 - Love this and tastes even better with some honey that we asked for on the side Arugula & Fennel Salad 4/5 $24 - Delicious and refreshing. Our server came pretty fast to ask us if we had questions about the menu and took our drink orders. Attention here was spot on as we had water refills frequently without being asked! Zucchini chips were battered and fried nicely def a good app. The lamb chops were requested to be medium rare however it seems like it was cooked more on the rare side. Came here for a Christmas date. We just ordered the one off menu item which was the surf and turf because we're suckers for ribeye. The steak was a massive 28oz bone-in beast (though it might've been a few oz short). It came with 3 jumbo prawns that were cooked perfectly and they came on a pan of red wine demi glaze and some mushrooms. The side was shoestring fries with some standard aioli. Service was adequate if a bit slow at times but overall a decent meal as the steak was cooked perfectly. Nothing spectacular overall and hence I feel it's a bit overpriced at $225. A beautiful tapestry of a restaurant in a quaint neighbourhood serving some delicious food. I had the pleasure of having lunch at Watercolour last week after pining to go to this restaurant for a long time. It's difficult to get to due to local city construction but plow through that and don't let it stop you because this establishment delivers on all fronts. Service was exceptional, fast, friendly and knowledgeable. Thanks goes out to Erin who went above and beyond to welcome me and help me feel comfortable. The restaurant itself is beautiful, cozy and quiet with a lot of different nooks to settle in nicely for some delicious food. What a hidden gem in Markham, this restaurant continues to justify its reputation with attentive service, delicious food and a welcoming, polished ambiance. I had a surprise birthday dinner and everything I asked for was accommodated by the staff. The zucchini chips arrived crisp and was my favourite. The lamb chops we ordered was also fairly delicious but the highlight was the lobster tagliatelle, where the flavours just worked really well and the lobster was fresh. Having just landed in Toronto--and completely forgetting it was Mother's Day --I found myself in a last-minute scramble to find a restaurant that wasn't overflowing with crowds. By some stroke of luck (or divine intervention), I stumbled upon this spot with one available seat... at the chef's table, no less! Then came the seafood risotto--an absolute dream. The flavor transported me straight back to the kind of risotto I had growing up in Italy--rich, layered, and perfectly balanced. Truly unmatched. The first thing you need to know is that it's pretty pricey. This is the land of thirty dollar drinks, and sixty dollar mains. So, if you're reading that and thinking "That's not that expensive given today's restaurant prices," then this is the place for you. Because it is really delicious. Walking Unionville Mainstreet before or after a meal is always a wonderful time, but when you're in the restaurant, you're in for a treat as well. I recommend trying to sit up stairs. There's less traffic, great views out the window, and a calmer atmosphere. The pasta is superb, and more than enough to fill you. But, the lamb chops really surprised me. There were five. Five chops? Presentation wise the food looked amazing and taste wise the food was equally as delicious. The only thing was...service. Our server never came back to check on us. I would have loved some crushed black pepper, but he never came back. Someone completely different took our dessert order, dropped it off and quickly left and well we had no forks. It took a while to flag someone down to get forks. I think what made the experience not great was the lack of service. Another thing, I'm a person that looks at the menu before going to any place. I noticed that menu online and in person were completely different. The prices were also completely different. Everything on the in person menus was 10-15 dollars more than started on the website. We were lucky to be seated at a booth on the second floor which was intimate and also sheltered away from the cold. The Valentine's Day menu allowed us to pick one app and dessert each, along with a shared main. We got the following: - Crab Croquette with Aioli & caviar - Tenderloin Carpaccio with Aioli, Mancheo & Fresh Truffles - 14oz Australian Wagyu Striploin with Roasted Vegetables & Potatoes - Chocolate truffle cake with hazlenuts - Vanilla cheesecake with raspberry compote My favourite was the wagyu, which was cooked perfectly and was delicious and tender. I think the food is absolutely delicious here as well as the fact that the ambiance is really upscale for somewhere in Markham Unionville. When you walk inside, you're transported to some trendy spot in downtown Toronto. However, I think the price reflects that of Toronto real estate rent and not Markham Unionville rent. And I feel like it was kind of an overpriced dinner even though the food was good. I think there are probably other places with higher quality food for that same price range. But overall, I thought the zucchini chips were really good, so crispy that each one was puffed up. The octopus was on a bed of hummus with some roasted potatoes. We ordered a side of bread that was dipped in olive oil and freshly baked, which was absolutely delicious and we use that bread to soak up all the hummus and olive oil from the octopus dish. We ordered their halibut special. It was actually a pretty large portion but quite expensive and the seafood risotto tasted exactly like the seafood risotto I had in Greece, so the food was quite authentic to Greek slash Mediterranean food however, the price I just couldn't get over given that I was dining in Markham. It was my birthday that my husband booked this restaurant to celebrate with me. It was weekday night that we were there. The restaurant was busy and lots of people made reservations ahead. Sort of popular. The restaurant has front and back patios and indoor dining room (upstairs and downstairs). During summer, they open both front and back patios during the day, but only open the back patio at night. We preferred the patio. Since we had made reservation, we had our table fast. Then we had to settled down our baby first, it took a bit time, but the waitress came to us couple times. Kind of a bit rush. Finally, baby was quiet a little bit, we were rushed to order our drink and food. I got a glass of white Sangria, as my husband was the driver of the night. We had the Calamari Fritti ($26) and Rack of Lamb ($62). They didn't take long to be served, but the "rack" of lamb was not that much. Maybe we misunderstood the word. The taste of Calamari was no different than the others; the lamb was burnt outside, but I liked the garnishes on the top, which was with some green onion or parsley, they tasted like marinated or pickled. Came here a second time and this time was for our wedding anniversary. When we made the reservation online, we requested for a more spacious and private table, and we indeed got seated at a table with a lot of privacy on the first floor. We received a warm welcome by Michael upon our arrival and he did a good job introducing the menu and specials. We ordered the Organic Salmon and Lobster Tagliatelle. The salmon was super delicious. The skin was crispy till the last bite and the inside was really tender. It was cooked to perfection. Michael was also attentive and considerate enough to make sure the salmon was a bit more on the cooked than how they would normally serve it due to dietary restrictions without being asked. The sauces and chickpea with the tomato and onion were so refreshing and complemented the salmon perfectly. The lobster pasta was really good as well. The lobster was fresh and there was sufficient lobster. The tagliatelle was perfectly al dente. It was also nicely portioned and prepared in the sense that you would not feel very full or bloated from the cream and would still enjoy the very last bite. Because it was our anniversary, Michael was generous enough to offer us a complementary dessert. That was definitely a nice gesture and we really appreciated it. We had the New York Cheesecake and it was really tasty. It didn't taste too sweet but just enough sweetness to end the meal. Overall, we were very satisfied with our dining experience here both times, especially this time. Service was really good and Michael came to check on us and fill our water a few times. They were very accommodating and detailed oriented with dietary restrictions; would go above and beyond to ensure the restrictions were met without our request. The only downside was that because it was a really hot day (30 degree Celsius), there were some flies flying around. However, the food and dining experience were really good that I'm still giving it a five star despite the flies. I visited highly rated Watercolour restaurant on a week day around 1pm that was -20 degrees. I honestly thought they would not be busy. Man...was I wrong. They seemed to get a steady stream of patrons coming in. That's a great sign! Most of the patrons were dining on the 2nd floor, but I just wanted to stay on the first floor so that I get a view of the chefs in action in the open kitchen. The open kitchen actually stylistically reminded me of one belonging to a greasy spoon diner, which was a tad disappointing for a restaurant of this ilk, but the dining room was classy in a non-uptight way. I had my sights set on seafood related dishes, eventually landing on the shrimp tagliatelle. The pasta did not blow me away, but I thought it was really good. The pasta was homemade and it had the necessary chew. The sauce was not super distinct in flavour, but it was a light tomato base sauce cooked with garlic and green olives. I'm not an olive guy at all and generally will not touch them, but this is the rare time where I actually enjoyed the slight acidity that the olives brought to the pasta. I also ate all the olives as well. The shrimps were of medium size and had a good seafood taste to them; should be the nicer frozen variety. What I didn't like about the shrimp was that they had a slight artificial crunch. However they treated them reminds me of the texture of the shrimps inside some Hong Kong style wontons. If they can tone that down a bit, the shrimps would be more enjoyable. The quality that they offer is pretty on par with the Yelp reviews. The service was competent with frequent water top up and occasional check ins on how my experience was. Something they have to be cognizant of is the interaction between the cooking staff. There were a couple instances where the f-word was used. It wasn't hostile or anything, I'm generally not bent out of shape with swearing unless kids and seniors are present and I'm pretty aware that the use of expletives are pretty prevalent in most kitchens. But, they shouldn't forget that they are operating in an open kitchen setting... everything can be heard. Definitely something for them to rectify. I also realized that the menu that they have at the restaurant is not matching the one on their website. If they can up their game in those departments, I would have no problems recommending Watercolour Restaurant to others. read more

We were seated upstairs where there is a main dining area and cute little cut-outs on the other side for a closer date experience. Our server was prompt and was able to gauge the time needed for us to chat. We had a smattering of appetizers as our meal. The burrata had a generous portion of super sweet and fresh cherry tomatoes and basil. The burrata had a nice creamy texture. The tuna tartare was very fresh and not fishy at all. At that price point, I expected more. That said, the food itself was good, a solid 8/10, and the service was quick , even with the Valentine's Day rush--about a 7/10. downtown restaurant located uptown?! when watercolour opened on mainstreet unionville, i knew i had to go and try and so we went on our anniversary. Ambiance in the interior is beautiful, upstairs had these cute little two seater booths for couples that felt very intimate and secluded. Service was also exceptional, always had our water refilled and was always asked how everything was. Lastly, the food was impeccable, my favourite was the mushroom pasta and the phyllo feta!!! soooooo delicious. Definitely a nice place to go to if celebrating a nice occasion! read more

Beautiful and incredible new restaurant. Great job transforming this place to something modern and sexy. Food here was very good and I did not have a single bad plate. Service was spot on. Drinks and wine selection was excellent Dessert was the only disappointment at $17, portions are small and or not that great. Good variety of dishes, the portions were good for sharing. Recommend the fish and rack of lamb! The risotto had plenty of fresh seafood which was very nice! Appetizers came quick but it took quite a long time between appetizers taken away to mains being served (close to an hour), we had our waters refilled and plates changed but would nice to know if things would take longer.
