A Wonderful Surprise at A Tavola in Whitby! I hadn't been back to A Tavola in almost 10 years--ever since becoming vegan--because I assumed there wouldn't be much on the menu for me. Last night, my friends and I decided to go anyway, knowing the quality was always great... and I'm so glad we did! To my surprise and delight, Chef Vito let us know that all of their pastas are vegan and he could easily modify the sauces to suit my diet. The food was absolutely delicious--it tasted just like the meals I had in Italy. The quality, attention to detail, and service were even better than I remembered. I started with the fennel and orange salad, followed by a beautifully adapted pasta dish, and every bite was perfection. We left so happy that we chose to support a locally owned restaurant instead of a corporate chain. It's such a joy to celebrate the small businesses in our community that truly care about their craft. We'll definitely be back! read more

Tried this highly rated restaurant tucked in an unassuming neighbourhood strip plaza in Whitby. We weren't super hungry so tried a few dishes only. Had the Octupus appetizer, Caesar salad appetizer, home made foccaccia special, and the seafood squid ink pasta. First off, ambience is nice and romantic Place is fairly quiet No boosters or high chair so bring your own if you have little ones. Everyone looked like they were on a date except for a few families. Food was good. Portions were good sized and we shared it all. Caesar salad was delicious and one of the better ones I've had. Octupus is very tender and flavourful. Def recommend the octopus. Focaccia was alright, a big too hard for my liking. Squid ink pasta and seafood were good. It was tasty and well cooked but not a must order item. Also had a cosmopolitan here and it was strong! Be aware no watered down drinks here! Glad to find this neighbourhood gem and will be adding it to my revisit list read more

Apart from the food being ok I am extremely dissatisfied to find out today that there was an automatic 20 percent added to our bill. we were not informed of this and added 15 percent making it 35 percent which I most certainly would not have left. I think this is a VERY shady practice. If you are adding a gratuity which is not legal by the way in canada, YOU should at least inform your guests. read more

A Tavola is one of my favourite Mediterranean restaurants and certainly my favourite restaurant in Whitby. My wife and I been coming here for several years and we are always supremely satisfied with my meal. My favourite thing about A Tavola is the feature menu, which changes frequently. I'm not sure if it actually changes daily, but it's certainly never been the same on two subsequent visits. If you're not sure what to order, I've never been disappointed with the whole fish feature: always fresh, delicious and the table-side deboning is a memorable experience. Truly, all the seafood and pasta dishes at A Tavola are fantastic. So how can you go wrong in combining the two? My wife swears by the chitarra nera ($30): squid ink pasta with wild caught jumbo Gulf shrimp, wild caught jumbo sea scallops in a white wine, garlic and herb sauce. Absolutely devine! For the best value, we always try and go for dinner on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday evening when you can get any handcrafted pasta (including the above-mentioned chitarra nera, for a $10 supplement) in a prix-fixe for only $37. My husband and i are trying to be good xiannial surbabnites so we decided (again) stay local (or we're getting lazier lol). What a gem! You would never know or expect this exceptionally good Italian seafood resto in this suburban plaza but there you have it! I obvi didnt read the calamari descrip properly cause i expected fried calamari but i was still very satistied with their version. All i wanted to do was wipe the dish clean with my bread- which you can keep asking for btw. We were lucky enough to try 2 different fresh off the oven breads! Noms! tbh i already forgot the name of the dishes. Too bad these reviews aren't 4D so you can smell and taste it lol. So show'em my pictures and ask them- what's this? We were so wondefully satiated! Just... just fantastic. Too full to type, but wow. So we came here before I left on my European backpacking trip and I'm so glad we did. Not only is the ambiance and service incredible, but the food was fantastic. We started off with an antipasto platter of grilled vegetables, cheese and meat, as well a their sourdough bruschetta. Paired it with a wine I cannot remember (some rosé) and it was delicious. Then I ordered the lamb rack with polenta cake and green beans, with a pistachio crema. Dear god it was amazing. The lamb was delicious and the polenta cake was so soft and pillowy. However, I regret not ordering pasta as well because I tried my brothers and it was wonderful. All their pasta is home made and you can definitely tell. I can't recommend enough. read more

Food is definitely high end however staff are not overly welcoming. I was there with a large group, they ran out of several items and were reluctant to made adjustments on others. With a group of 8 we spent quite a bit so I was surprised when the lights were turned on at 930 and the staff crowded around us clearly wanting us out. read more

The best food and service at any Durham Region restaurant I have dined at, hands down. I came here with a girlfriend on a Saturday night, shared a bottle of wine and enjoyed a wonderful meal. We started with the cheese & charcuterie board. The zucchini salad, Buffalo mozzarella and prosciutto were delicious. I love that they import the cheese from Italy! I ordered the Chitarra for my main. The hand-made noodles make such a difference and the portion size was quite generous. I'd order it again and again. To finish our meal we shared a piece of lemon meringue pie, which was the perfect combination of tart lemon and marshmallow-sweet meringue. What a find off Garden St in Whitby, practically nestled in a small suburb corner plaza. The food here is consistently fresh and fantastic. I won't spoil too much (they have a spiel they like to share with new diners...) but everything is hand-made from scratch using high-quality ingredients and fresh meat and fish. I've been enough times to have almost everything on the menu and it's been excellent. I love the pesto bruschetta to start, although the salads are very good as well. It's often hard to choose entrees due to the sheer number of specials, but you can't go wrong with any of the house made pastas, or the whole fish specials. On top of the great food, the service is consistently awesome. All this comes with a price of course - they are busy! Every Friday and Saturday night sees walk ins sent away at the door. Took a drive here last night with my wife for a late dinner. The location is a little tucked away, but once inside you could be anywhere but the frozen wastes of Ontario as you are welcomed warmly and seated. The decor is tasteful, soft music is playing and and there is a spotless open kitchen in the back bustling with activity. We order drinks, then go over the menus. Nothing on the menu seems to be left to chance or simply a placeholder. There is a wide variety of Mediterranean dishes, and as it turns out the list of daily specials is longer than the menu! My wife orders the octopus salad with some chickpea fritters, while I have the rice balls. The octopus was fantastic- had just a bite. Would have ordered it but wanted to save room for the pasta course. The rice balls were great too- crispy on the outside and creamy in the middle. The chef send out some potato fritters as well! These had a very nice sauce with a hint of spice. Then for me it was on to the seafood ravioli. I believe they were stuffed with grouper and ricotta-what a great combination. The ravioli was accompanied with mussels and beautiful little clams all in a tomato sauce. It was mentioned that the ravioli (and indeed all the pasta) was hand-made. For our seconds, my wife and I both ordered the lamb shank- hers with mashed potato and mine with saffron rice cakes. Wow. Incredibly juicy and tender! A little orange peel grated on top gave the lamb an exquisite flavor. Feeling rather full at this stage yet remaining undaunted- my wife and I ventured into the realm of dessert. Classic tiramisu for myself and what seemed to be a lemon meringue parfait for the wife. Astonishingly we finished even these without immediately slipping into a food coma. The tiramisu was excellent- but the lemon flavor in my wife's dessert was truly stand out! The service was top notch, and the chef very clearly loves his trade. It seems like he makes a point of ensuring all his guests are happy (and well fed). This place just opened, and I think it's safe to say its a hit! Will definitely be back. read more

Went here for dinner with my favourite girls. I have to say it was exquisite food. Our waitress Emily? Emma? I feel bad that I forget but she was so friendly and was able to tell us about the menu but also felt very personable. She made the experience that much better. I had the seafood platter to start and the shrimp is probably the best I've ever had. The calamari was awesome too! The ceased to start was Devine. Home made sauce made that dish. Drool For dinner I had the saffron infused pasta with bolognese and holy crap was it great. The home made pasta The creme caramel was so good! We went to visit this restaurant after hearing about it from friends. A bit of a trip to go from Toronto to Whitby but oh so worth it!! The food was fantastic, and very fresh. Fresh bread, seafood platter to die for ... really - if you like seafood ... mmmmm ..... and fresh sea bass. Everything about A Tavola was excellent! The service was excellent and the food superb. I don't give five stars to any restaurant but if I did, this one would be in the running. Amazing, fresh, honey-drizzled figs IN APRIL!! Fresh pasta and bread made in their own kitchen!! The portions aren't enormous but good, fresh, local-sourced ingredients make them a decent value. Don't let the suburban plaza location fool you, this place could compete with the most trendy downtown spots. Give it a try. Well worth it! read more

A Tavola has expanded into the space nextdoor and it seems they can no longer handle the numbers. We had a large party dining next to us and when it broke up we had to listen to 10 minutes of table and chair dragging (I guess they are too heavy to lift) so that conversation was impossible. I wanted to try the Sausage Trio. At $36 you expect maybe a wild boar, duck, venison or other exotic sausage. Nope -- just three differently spiced pork sausages. Really? $12 per pork sausage. Where do you think you are? I opted for the Chittara and with Scallops and shrimp $29 didn't seem unreasonable. The pesto cream was very tasty but unfortunately the shrimp were cooked to rubber and the scallops were also past perfect but not quite as bad. The highlight was the radicchio and pear salad. Desert special was a meringue and chocolate mousse that tasted like it was bought at the local grocery store. At these prices, the restaurant should have a dedicated front of house person to ensure the customer experience isn't marred by chair dragging. read more

Party of 4 during Covid. Left message request, restaurant called back, very correct. Two of us delayed 15 minutes, no problem. Wine list used to be better when they opened, now limited. Red bottles up to $46, then jump to well over $100, nothing in between. Service polite, efficient, no fault. Food good for Durham with one notable exception: my lamb shank was DIVINE! I am an old 'foodie' mostly going to Toronto for good meals and this lamb shank is certainly the best single dish I have eaten in Durham in 32 years. Moist and tender 'fall off the bone' with the best lamb flavour possible. Great meat done right. Kudos to the chef! read more

I can't say enough great things about A Tavola. My family went 6 or 7 times since they opened this year and I believe we tried almost every dish on their summer menu. We were so excited with the new fall menu that we tried it immediately. It's the same fantastic quality we've come to love. There is nothing like their homemade pasta. The gluten free options are phenomenal and make it our go to place for any allergies in the family. The service can feel a little awkward at times, as one reviewer mentioned, younger male servers who seem to not be completely comfortable yet but the last time I was there they seemed to have hired a server with a bit more experience and she was great. And really, once the food comes and you're enjoying it with family and friends a not perfect but still good waiter is the least of my worries. read more
