Harper Greer is a wonderful place - I have been going there for almost 20 years. Most of the clothes are made of natural fabrics (cotton, silk, wool, etc.), and they are extremely well made. Styles are classic and tailored, and I have a number of jackets and skirts that I have been wearing for more than 10 years. The only time I ever had something "come apart" was my own fault - I wore my favorite shirt from H-G out at the elbows. The fabric wore thru, but the sewing was still fine. Service is remarkable, and both John and Terry go out of their way to serve you. Many years ago, they came out with some Hawaiian shirts for women. My husband was so taken with the fabric, he asked if they could do shirts for him. Much to our surprise, they agreed to make a set of shirts for him. They still look great. I was just there recently, and John helped me find a few things, including something that I thought would not look good. John suggested I try it anyway because he was sure I would like it. As always, he was correct. Joseph the tailor is also wonderful, and on more than one occasion he recommended that I try something on in a color I thought was bad for me. I was impressed that he had thought about it, and he was right. The atmosphere of the store is great, and you are always treated extremely well. I never miss a stop there when I am in San Francisco, and I often order via phone. I know that i can always count on them. read more

Like other overweight women, I find it difficult to buy high quality clothes suitable for the professional workplace. The Catherines/LaneBryant stores specialize in sportswear or polyester knock-offs of quality shirts and suits. Harper Greer has long had a limited but lovely selection of silk tops that work with skirts and slacks for even the most difficult figures. I desperately miss some of their earlier, spectacular Vietnamese silks, which featured such interesting patterns and tone-on-tone stitching. But even the somewhat more restrained silks - and indeed some of their well-cut polyesters - are still a staple of my wardrobe. I no longer live in the Bay Area but from the opposite coast of the country I now I buy by web and phone quite regularly. I still do shop at other stores, like Macy's, and there I find things I can wear for a season before they stretch out, unravel or otherwise become raggedy looking. For us plus-size fashionistas, there's nothing better than finding a retailer with style without the retail attitude (if you know what I mean). Not everything at HG is my style - many things are too flowy and not quite structured enough. Nonethless, I have many, many pieces of HG original fashion that I've purchased over the years, and I love them all. On my most recent trip, I took in three pieces that were purchased 3-5 years ago that no longer fit due to a recent weight loss, and their outstanding tailor was able to alter them for me at a very reasonable cost. Now, I can once again rock my favorite HG asian print jacket and classic black trousers. I also added a great top in my signature color (red) and a fabulous dress. John is a fantastic help in finding styles and colors that truly flatter, and is never pushy about selling. A stop at Harper Greer is truly a must for me every chance I get! I can't agree more with the other reviewers. HG is a fine store with very tasteful clothing that is not trendy, nor boring. I would not call this a commercial (Lane Bryant, Avenue) retail store. It is a fine proprietor of clothing for large women. You get what you pay for and more. I first learned about the Berkeley store by accident. I am a plus size woman so I am always scouting plus size retail. I had the most wonderful experience stumbling into the store. The staff were extremely engaging, John the owner (who is also a great musician) knows women's (large women) fashion that is flatering to the figure. He will tastefully tell you when, "... you may want to look a another cut or color, or that looks just great on you..." Now that they've moved to San Francisco I can't drop in as often - but when I do I am never disappointed and always spend more than I intend too. Great store for the plus size woman! read more

I am - most of the time - a dash in, dash out - Macys, Marshalls, TJ Maxx - please don't make me shop- kind of girl... But years ago I stumbled into Harper Greer waiting for some outlet store that wasn't going to have anything that fit me in it anyway to open up in the morning (and we're talking 20 years ago)... And I've been their's ever since. I've adjusted to having people bring me clothes in other sizes or other colors, and bring me tea, and suggest things I might like, and remember my name, and remember that I'm from out of town and only show up a couple times a year... And it's been a lovely adjustment. I just haven't quite adjusted to the new location yet but mostly that's because I can call and they'll ship me things - so why work out the parking when you're spoiled and don't have to drive from Monterey to SF... I have been shopping at Harper Greer for more than 12 years and love their clothes. Their fabrics are wonderful and unique, John is wonderful to work with and very helpful with suggestions. The service at HG is top-notch in every way! Since I live on the east coast and generally get to San Francisco only once a year, HG has made it so easy to order on line since they know what I've bought before, which size fits for each type of garment and they will even send fabric swatches. I also commend HG for carrying some more moderately priced casual items. I also started shopping with them in the old south of market location but like the Sutter Street store and hope it brings them more traffic. I discovered them by accident many years ago when i was in town attending a meeting. My name is Greer and I noticed their name and looked in the window. At the time I lived in Alabama. I became a customer that day and have been one ever since. I have always appreciated the designs, fabrics and styles available for plus size women. The clothing is interesting and varied with style that is not as easy to find "off the rack". There is an on site tailor who will adjust fit on any purchases as needed. They have even made their styles for me in fabric that I have chosen and brought in. GREAT option for women size 12 and higher. Cannot say enough to praise my experience with them. read more

I've been visiting this store for over 20 years and have always been satisfied. The quality of their clothes are surpassed only by the helpfulness of the owners and staff. It is so hard to find well made attractive large size clothes. I've never found anything else that comes close to Harper Greer in the quality of the materials and workmanship in their clothes. I live on the east coast and it is a tribute to HG that I shop there almost exclusively - a good bit of it through phone conversations with one of the owners or their excellent sales staff. John (the owner) knows my taste, my favorite colors and what looks good on me. I trust his judgment completely. read more

I have shopped at Harper Greer for more years that I wish to admit. It is always on top of my list whenever I am in SF. I travel extensively for my job. I am regularly asked where I got my outfit, particularly anytime I am wearing one of the silk tops. When I receive the swatches for the new season's clothes i start making my shopping list. I know i have numerous times walked in the store and said "do you have the piece in the window in my size? I have to have it." I am from Michigan. I found Harper Greer about 20 years ago when I was in San Francisco. They were in a warehouse near the Oakland Bridge. I still wear a beautiful blouse I got on that trip. I love their clothes. They are beautiful and very well made. The staff is terrific. Back before everyone had computers if I needed something I would call the store, tell them what I needed and they would send me outfits to try. I would pick the best and send them back the rest . Now I can go on line and see the new arrivals and buy what I love. Harper Greer is my favorite store. read more

I live in North Dakota where clothing for larger women is not easy to find. It is especially difficult if you want something with style, elegance and comfort. I have been shopping with Harper Greer for at least twenty five years. Now that my husband is ill, we no longer are able to visit San Fran- cisco as we once did. However, I am still wearing many of my dresses and jackets that I purchased years ago. John is also very obliging with helping me order over the telephone. He evan custom made me a dress to wear to the opera overnight when my bags were missing. read more

This place is AWESOME! Local designer, clothes are made IN San Francisco, and they have my sizes!! Of course after many years as a "16W-18W" I am able to wear an extra-small or extra-extra small in their store? Amazing! What planet am I on anyway? This place is fantastic. The salespeople or "style consultants" as they are called are so friendly and helpful. They have an on-site tailor and he was able to let the hem down on my pants for my LONG inseam and had them to me in just a few days! Harper Greer is a rarity in retail and especially in Plus sizes. Proprietors, John and Terry, are truly focused on how you look and feel in their well-made, stylish and beautiful clothing (most of which are made in San Francisco). Discovering this store was a welcomed accident. I was attending a conference and decided to talk a walk, not expecting to find a place that not only had beautiful clothes, but made to fit me mostly off the rack. If I had tayloring requriements, they took care of them on site. Since I've returned home, I ordered via internet to find the fit as exacting as I did while shopping in person. I was introduced to Harper Greer by my daughter who told me that my wardrobe was too frumpy. The selection is fashionable, colorful and feminine without being over the top trendy. I brought my visiting sister-in-law here and she was excited and spent $$$ The space is lovely, high ceilings and not cluttered.
