I was actually very interested in a fairly inexpensive piece of jewelry, but I just cannot support stores that have no kind of customer service ethic or are not welcoming in any way? Its actually kind of awkward to be the only person in the store and you're ignored. Just feedback for the owner if they are interested. I would love to shop local as well to be clear, I am always forced back to big stores because I am actually welcomed and asked if I need help.

I purchased some perfume but ended up going back the next day to buy another after I ended up loving one I had tested and it was an experience I will not forget. We were on the way to drop off our oldest at College which though exciting- is a tough time for parents! The lady who helped me - Ruth - was amazing and could see I was a bit emotional; and told me if we ever needed anything, being so far away, to know that she was there as she knows exactly what it is like! It was just such an amazing gesture and lovely to know there are people like Ruth in their world. I will continue to shop here, especially that we will be back in the area so often and just want to thank the store and Ruth in particular, for an amazing experience

Cute and flowy cotton summer dresses and shirts, linen-blend cover ups, and shimmery tanks and tank dresses. They currently have a Spring Sale with some items 20%-40%. In addition to clothing, they carry casual and comfortable ballet flats and loafers, scarves, purses, and jewelry. The shoes were high quality material and the purses -- from clutches to bags -- were stylish and trendy. Parking is easy to find in the large adjacent parking lot. The first few spots are 30 minutes, but drive farther into the lot for lengthier parking time.

Even if you are buying 10 items, please be sure to insist the sales people ring up 5 separate transactions of 2 items at a time so you get the best deal, otherwise, they will ring them all up together and only give you the 4 very lowest prices. It is unfortunate that the sales people don't tell customers this information in advance, but at least when you realize it, you can usually return everything and have them re-ring it so you get the deal. But, it is absolutely scammy when they don't tell you and it's a "final sale". I saw a lady in this store today buy multiple items only to find out that she did not get the deal she thought she was getting because of the way the transaction was rung up. Because it was a "final" sale, the man ringing her up said he couldn't help her and it was too late. The sale was final. Whether that was really true or not doesn't matter as much as how the sales person treated this customer. He had no empathy and really was not a nice person about it. After the lady left, he said "why do I care what happens, the stores closing and I'm not going to be here anyway." It's such a commentary on how some people just can't be kind. How hard would it be to tell customers ahead how best to have their transactions rung up to get the deal or at least be kind when the customer feels very wronged? I really don't know what is wrong with people these days. I hope this lady disputes this transaction with her credit card company because I'm sure she will be given the accurate amount she would have gotten with a proper checkout process, but with everything happening in the world today, it so sad to see that a young man couldn't have been a nicer human.

They carry a broad range of items, both in terms of styles and price points (e.g., ranging from Steve Madden to Zadig and Voltaire and everything in between). They also carry a ton of jewelry, accessories, candles and more. It's the type of place where you could easily spend a solid hour sorting through the racks to find hidden treasures. They make great use of the relatively small space, which is awesome in terms of having so many options to choose from, though it can be a little difficult to sift through the tightly-packed clothing. Thankfully the staff is very friendly and will help you find whatever it is you may need. One thing to keep in mind is that they have a seven-day return policy, and returns are for store credit only. P.S. Zahra is also a hair salon. I haven't had my hair done here, but what a fun idea to get glammed up from head to toe in one store.

One of them, Sharon, was annoyed when I brought in an online return at 5:00 p.m. on a weekend (6 pm closing time), and told me I was interfering with her closing duties and needed to bring it in earlier in the day (no one else was in the store). My experience yesterday, 8/10/25, was unacceptable. I came in to look at a few items, and was greeted by a different sales associate (who I believe happens to be a friend of Sharon). I was looking at a handbag on a shelf next to a clothing rack that I was interested in buying, and the associate rushed up to me and chastised me as if I were a 10-year-old, and said I was "not to touch the display." How would I know if I wanted to buy the bag if I could not hold it and see the interior? I told the sales associate that I did not appreciate how she spoke to me (there was no one else in the store), and she doubled down, refusing to apologize. J McLaughlin, please train your staff to have appropriate customer service skills, and if they cannot provide them, then release them. By contrast, the staff next door at Bluemercury are always wonderful and helpful. I will not be returning to this J McLaughlin location.

Harper Greer is a wonderful place - I have been going there for almost 20 years. Most of the clothes are made of natural fabrics (cotton, silk, wool, etc.), and they are extremely well made. Styles are classic and tailored, and I have a number of jackets and skirts that I have been wearing for more than 10 years. The only time I ever had something "come apart" was my own fault - I wore my favorite shirt from H-G out at the elbows. The fabric wore thru, but the sewing was still fine. Service is remarkable, and both John and Terry go out of their way to serve you. Many years ago, they came out with some Hawaiian shirts for women. My husband was so taken with the fabric, he asked if they could do shirts for him. Much to our surprise, they agreed to make a set of shirts for him. They still look great. I was just there recently, and John helped me find a few things, including something that I thought would not look good. John suggested I try it anyway because he was sure I would like it. As always, he was correct. Joseph the tailor is also wonderful, and on more than one occasion he recommended that I try something on in a color I thought was bad for me. I was impressed that he had thought about it, and he was right. The atmosphere of the store is great, and you are always treated extremely well. I never miss a stop there when I am in San Francisco, and I often order via phone. I know that i can always count on them. read more

Like other overweight women, I find it difficult to buy high quality clothes suitable for the professional workplace. The Catherines/LaneBryant stores specialize in sportswear or polyester knock-offs of quality shirts and suits. Harper Greer has long had a limited but lovely selection of silk tops that work with skirts and slacks for even the most difficult figures. I desperately miss some of their earlier, spectacular Vietnamese silks, which featured such interesting patterns and tone-on-tone stitching. But even the somewhat more restrained silks - and indeed some of their well-cut polyesters - are still a staple of my wardrobe. I no longer live in the Bay Area but from the opposite coast of the country I now I buy by web and phone quite regularly. I still do shop at other stores, like Macy's, and there I find things I can wear for a season before they stretch out, unravel or otherwise become raggedy looking. My Harper Greer clothes, on the other hand, last for years. Call me a loyal customer read more

For us plus-size fashionistas, there's nothing better than finding a retailer with style without the retail attitude (if you know what I mean). Not everything at HG is my style - many things are too flowy and not quite structured enough. Nonethless, I have many, many pieces of HG original fashion that I've purchased over the years, and I love them all. On my most recent trip, I took in three pieces that were purchased 3-5 years ago that no longer fit due to a recent weight loss, and their outstanding tailor was able to alter them for me at a very reasonable cost. Now, I can once again rock my favorite HG asian print jacket and classic black trousers. I also added a great top in my signature color (red) and a fabulous dress. John is a fantastic help in finding styles and colors that truly flatter, and is never pushy about selling. A stop at Harper Greer is truly a must for me every chance I get! I can't agree more with the other reviewers. HG is a fine store with very tasteful clothing that is not trendy, nor boring. I would not call this a commercial (Lane Bryant, Avenue) retail store. It is a fine proprietor of clothing for large women. You get what you pay for and more. I first learned about the Berkeley store by accident. I am a plus size woman so I am always scouting plus size retail. I had the most wonderful experience stumbling into the store. The staff were extremely engaging, John the owner (who is also a great musician) knows women's (large women) fashion that is flatering to the figure. He will tastefully tell you when, "... you may want to look a another cut or color, or that looks just great on you..." Now that they've moved to San Francisco I can't drop in as often - but when I do I am never disappointed and always spend more than I intend too. Great store for the plus size woman! read more

I am - most of the time - a dash in, dash out - Macys, Marshalls, TJ Maxx - please don't make me shop- kind of girl... But years ago I stumbled into Harper Greer waiting for some outlet store that wasn't going to have anything that fit me in it anyway to open up in the morning (and we're talking 20 years ago)... And I've been their's ever since. I've adjusted to having people bring me clothes in other sizes or other colors, and bring me tea, and suggest things I might like, and remember my name, and remember that I'm from out of town and only show up a couple times a year... And it's been a lovely adjustment. I just haven't quite adjusted to the new location yet but mostly that's because I can call and they'll ship me things - so why work out the parking when you're spoiled and don't have to drive from Monterey to SF... I have been shopping at Harper Greer for more than 12 years and love their clothes. Their fabrics are wonderful and unique, John is wonderful to work with and very helpful with suggestions. The service at HG is top-notch in every way! Since I live on the east coast and generally get to San Francisco only once a year, HG has made it so easy to order on line since they know what I've bought before, which size fits for each type of garment and they will even send fabric swatches. I also commend HG for carrying some more moderately priced casual items. I also started shopping with them in the old south of market location but like the Sutter Street store and hope it brings them more traffic. I discovered them by accident many years ago when i was in town attending a meeting. My name is Greer and I noticed their name and looked in the window. At the time I lived in Alabama. I became a customer that day and have been one ever since. I have always appreciated the designs, fabrics and styles available for plus size women. The clothing is interesting and varied with style that is not as easy to find "off the rack". There is an on site tailor who will adjust fit on any purchases as needed. They have even made their styles for me in fabric that I have chosen and brought in. GREAT option for women size 12 and higher. Cannot say enough to praise my experience with them. read more

I've been visiting this store for over 20 years and have always been satisfied. The quality of their clothes are surpassed only by the helpfulness of the owners and staff. It is so hard to find well made attractive large size clothes. I've never found anything else that comes close to Harper Greer in the quality of the materials and workmanship in their clothes. I live on the east coast and it is a tribute to HG that I shop there almost exclusively - a good bit of it through phone conversations with one of the owners or their excellent sales staff. I have shopped at Harper Greer for more years that I wish to admit. It is always on top of my list whenever I am in SF. I travel extensively for my job. I am regularly asked where I got my outfit, particularly anytime I am wearing one of the silk tops. When I receive the swatches for the new season's clothes i start making my shopping list. I know i have numerous times walked in the store and said "do you have the piece in the window in my size? I have to have it." I am from Michigan. I found Harper Greer about 20 years ago when I was in San Francisco. They were in a warehouse near the Oakland Bridge. I still wear a beautiful blouse I got on that trip. I love their clothes. They are beautiful and very well made. The staff is terrific. Back before everyone had computers if I needed something I would call the store, tell them what I needed and they would send me outfits to try. I would pick the best and send them back the rest . I live in North Dakota where clothing for larger women is not easy to find. It is especially difficult if you want something with style, elegance and comfort. I have been shopping with Harper Greer for at least twenty five years. Now that my husband is ill, we no longer are able to visit San Fran- cisco as we once did. This place is AWESOME! Local designer, clothes are made IN San Francisco, and they have my sizes!! Of course after many years as a "16W-18W" I am able to wear an extra-small or extra-extra small in their store? Amazing! What planet am I on anyway? This place is fantastic. The salespeople or "style consultants" as they are called are so friendly and helpful. They have an on-site tailor and he was able to let the hem down on my pants for my LONG inseam and had them to me in just a few days! Proprietors, John and Terry, are truly focused on how you look and feel in their well-made, stylish and beautiful clothing (most of which are made in San Francisco). Discovering this store was a welcomed accident. I was attending a conference and decided to talk a walk, not expecting to find a place that not only had beautiful clothes, but made to fit me mostly off the rack. If I had tayloring requriements, they took care of them on site. Since I've returned home, I ordered via internet to find the fit as exacting as I did while shopping in person. I had the most pleasant shopping experience -- a rare occurrence for plus-sized women -- and I still receive compliments on the beautiful things I bought. Every trip I take from DC to SF I stop in HG - it is fabulous! I've missed airplanes to make my pilgrimage. Great colors - wonderful styles - excellent quality materials and the staff is attentive and so incredibly honest on what works and what doesn't work. Atlas, i.e. men's apparel, accessories, and items are front and center when you walk in the door. Athena, i.e. women's apparel, accessories, and items are to the right of the entrance. The clothing is hip and cool, and the fabrics and high quality. The jeans are lux and the tops are cozy and feel good to the touch. It's a larger space than the Atlas location in Walnut Creek, so they're able to carry a lot of styles for both men and women! Speaking of styles, their displays are set up by trend and not by vendor, so you can quickly put together a casual, trendy, or sophisticated outfit. They are the *only* place that carries the G-Star brand for BOTH men AND women outside of G-Star retail locations. Other vendors in their collection include the Canadian labels Dex and Tulle. In addition, they carry the Groceries label, created by a local from Pleasant Hill : ) Their target market is from 25 y.o. - 50 y.o., but the owner said that he hopes that younger and older clients will find their clothing accessible as well. *Note: The clock tower will be getting a makeover, as well as the doors to the store, and ultimately the entire plaza to make it more of a shopping destination, so watch for changes to come! *Tip: You can find out about their in-store wine tasting events with Do-Good Wines on their Facebook page : )
