Updated Review: Attention Yelpers. Doesn't seem worth explaining but for the uninitiated from a larger metro area, a needed heads up. Kind of obvious but maybe needs to be said. This is rural Tennessee. Freight trains, are frequent as the mountain mist. Prosperity, polish and pretentiousness entertained elsewhere, are not hosted here. The economic situation painted in a small town such as this that has been crushed economically as industries ebb and change, represents those who have sacrificed much. Evidences of sagging retail architecture edifices abound. Or as David Rose from Canadian TV might say, "look like a sad bag of potting soil." Feel free to disagree. The good: The coffee roasting and flavor @ Harmony House are way up from 5 years ago. I'm now ordering by mail from HH, Costa Rican and Ethiopian coffee. Have two fans in H town who fell in love with John's coffee roasting. I hope he considers to start selling coffee online. Carefronting Part One: FYI this establishment does accept credit cards. That is what I used to make purchases. Although throughout the town, cash is king as many small towns, unique locals or small businesses across the country (USA) are. I.e. Martha's Vineyard (Island) in Massachusetts. This is life: Artisan coffee roaster jovial, quick to laugh at his own jokes but honest and desiring to serve his community. He's genuine, focused on the best cuppa, perplexed by those who don't appreciate his passion for coffee. One of his faults. I'm probably as acerbic and moody. (Don't answer that.) The current building owner is woefully not interested in updating the property. That's unfortunate and also out of the HH proprietors hands. Interior seating updates however are on the way. And perhaps luring breakfast menu items beyond scones. We shall see. Meanwhile, if you are longing for pretty good coffee, this is a place I would pull off the interstate for. No Starbucks for miles. Confession, I packed my suitcase with 5 bags of coffee. And I'll probably be ordering soon. To mix metaphors it's not everyone's cup of tea. If you want more vibe and vitality with interiors to caffeinate, go for it. But don't shame a small town for not living up to a standardized platform. Meanwhile I'll keep ordering coffee from here. And the hot tea here is just as delicious. 5 stars for the caffeinating quality & options 3 for interiors 5 for staying power in a teeny, tiny small town My two cents: John, If given the go ahead, I'd put in new wood laminate flooring, a wall sized chalkboard / art wall and a funky lighting fixture w Edison bulbs and especially include a long community table, made from a local tree heavily lacquered festooned w bar stools.) Yep. In sum: Rolling green Mountain View's at one end of the street, clouds lingering over the mountain, and a bubbling fountain & mini park w covered picnic tables in the HH parking lot. Library & Post Office a few steps away. Not much to look in this town in ways of glitter and glam. (Although once famous for the Scopes Monkey trial) Yep. Came in after a local college tour, needing some caffeine before the drive home. We'd heard the owner roasted his own beans and were eager to buy some to take home. He took the time to ask us what we were using the beans for (lattes) and recommended his espresso roast. He even asked us how soon we'd be using them and recommended the best way to keep them fresh since we still had half an open bag to get thru back home. He is clearly passionate about coffee. We've been enjoying his beans at home for a week now and my husband and I both think they are by far the best beans we've ever used. My only regret is that we only bought one bag, going to have to look into getting more shipped to us ASAP :) Shop was spacious, maybe more dated than you'd see in a bigger city but the population of Dayton is only about 7,000, enjoy the small town vibes. Great location downtown and plenty of room inside to sit/study for locals and college students. read more

Came with girlfriend as tourists from Louisiana. Had frape girlfriend had iced coffee, both which were really good. It tasted quality unlike cheaper chain coffee places. The owner was nice and gave suggestions for nearby spots. read more

Got a chai Kwon do! Delicious, not too sickenly sweet like many chai drinks but came with optional whipped cream (yay!). They roast their own coffee and owner is friendly. We came in two minutes before closing, not realizing it and the owner was very welcoming. He didn't have any drip left due to time but still gave my husband an americano for the same price. ZERO STARS. And that's generous. Coffee is mediocre at best. Service was atrocious. The yelp ratings for this place were displaying 5 stars which was INCREDIBLY misleading. I use yelp often when traveling because 9 times out of 10 the recommendations are spot on. The service here was unacceptable. I felt pressured and pressed for time because the barista acted all in a flurry. The owner is impersonable & it made for a very unpleasant experience. He wouldn't let me pour my own simple syrup to sweeten my iced coffee & he charged me $0.50 to use my credit card without ANY signage or verbal notification to make me aware of that policy. If you want to have a good day, save yourself the trouble and swing through the McDonald's drive-thru. Their service is guaranteed to put a smile on your face! read more

If you want espresso, cappuccino, latte, or just a rich cup of coffee in the Dayton area this is it. Their lattes were perfect. They also roast their own coffee. The seating is limited and the ambiance needs work, but the coffee and the service are excellent. read more

Even though saying "this is the best coffee in Dayton" isn't saying much, I can honestly say that this is a place worth visiting. If you are in town and like coffee, chai, frappes, or smoothies stop in, meet the owner John and let his love for brewing coffee work to your advantage! I try to visit as many local cafes as I can when I am out. I have never had a better cup of coffee than the polar sun at Johns. The owner is super personable and has a strong passion for coffee. This is not a fast food restaurant. Expect your coffee to take a normal amount of time to be prepared. Perfection isn't immediate. read more

The lone employee (old guy with glasses) was a complete jerk and acted very rushed and curt when we were the ONLY people there to order. He refused to let my sister pour her own sweetener. When I requested fresh half-and-half for my americano he asked me, "Why?". He dropped a quick drop in my coffee like a jerk and walked off. I requested more and he abruptly put a splash more and stormed off. Jerk. OH! And they charge you $0.50 extra to use your freakin' credit card!!! WHAT?! read more

This place is horrible. They charge you extra to use a credit card without even telling you. The man that served me was very rude and acted busy. I highly recommend not going to this place!!! I would go get McDonald's coffee before I ever went here. read more

If I ever leave the East Tennessee area, not having Harmony House nearby will be one of the hardest life changes. John Piatt is a master roaster that makes the best coffee I've ever tasted. He's highly knowledgable about all things coffee and tea. You won't be disappointed with any of his products and will likely find his shop a great place to read, write or converse. read more

This is a great hangout place in Dayton, TN and the space provides a nice aesthetic. The service, on the other hand, is quite impersonal, rude, and rushed. The quality of the drinks are not bad, but not great. If you are looking for a specialty drink, this is not the place for you; only typical coffee and tea drinks are good here. read more

Phenomenal coffee roaster. Try the Ethiopian Yirgacheffe or the Brazilian Yellow Bourbon. Fantastic. The espresso drinks are good as well, I highly recommend the Italian Cappaccino. Free Wi-fi, great place to hang out for the afternoon. In fact the Dayton library is right across the street, so check out a good P.D. James novel and make a day of it! read more

I'm from out of town and wanted to visit a cute and unique coffee shop to the Dayton area. It was a very discouraging experience at the Harmony House. While the coffee is decent, the customer service was heavily upsetting. I couldn't tell if the bitterness in my mouth was a result of the employees attitude, or the the coffee. read more

Harmony House makes a mark. I am continually so impressed by the unique flavors and active expression that come out of this place. John Piatt's passion for both cultivating hospitality and his own originally roasted coffee beans stand out above pretty much any other coffee shop I've visited since my years living in Dayton. Not only that, but the way he supports the arts is unparalleled. I would highly recommend it to anyone who loves coffee and conversation any day! read more

Harmony House is awesome. The owner is an accomplished roaster of coffee and does his own roasting on premises. The quality of the coffee John serves up is of the very highest I've had and I've been to other small roasters many times.
