These guys are the best! I called early this morning on my way to work around 9 when my car decided to stall out/overheat. I let them know I was just waiting on my tow and then I'd be there. Luckily for me, the tow was two and a half hours late, so I didn't arrive here until about 12:30 when everyone was on lunch. Turns out I had spoken to Jim, one of the owners in the morning so he made sure I was taken care of, even though I expected to have to come back understandably. I have visited Hare Repair three times and each time I know they could have easily recommended a more complex repair (or just charging more) and I would have said yes because I didn't know better but every single time, they told me exactly what the issue was and it was a lot simpler. The final experience is why you should choose Hare. I took my car in because I was experiencing rough breaking (felt like there was a pebble stuck between the brake pad and rotor) and the ABS light kept coming on. Since I did not want to risk a braking problem, I took my car in. They checked it out and realized I just needed to replace my ABS sensor and it was covered under the warranty that Hare gave me with my previous repair. I've been getting my car served by them for almost a year. I enjoy getting my car serviced here because they are personable and know what they are doing! They always answer the phone and are very knowledgeable. They don't try to overcharge you either. I got an inspection recently thinking I would be charged hundreds, but I was called soon after I dropped it off, saying they inspected it, and I only needed an oil change. They're honest, and I really appreciate that. I'm so mad at myself for not discovering them earlier. I could've saved thousands. I've gone to car dealerships or popular chain shops to get my car serviced, and the next day, the check engine light came on, or the car broke down while I was driving, etc. This has never happened with Hare. They recently did me right again by fixing my radiator thermostat same day with no surprises. They do what they say and say what they do and if they don't, they call and inform you about it first. No surprises from them. These folks are a rare and dying breed of business in my opinion. I've referred countless friends for second opinions when they get high estimates for automotive work and 9 times out of 10 Hare Repair ends up fixing it for them at a fraction of the original quote. Haven't convinced you yet?! 2 things to note- their hours our shorter - when you are really good and can afford to close at 3pm on a weekday you are probably doing something right. The cost savings and quality work are worth adjusting your schedule for. If they can't or don't specialize in it, they won't. They aren't trying to upsell you and add on extra unneeded jobs. That being said, if they don't do it they usually have a nearby recommendation. But guess what, the folks at the front desk are knowledgeable and most often can give you some idea of what to expect if you have an idea of what's going on. I dread trying to find a new place to get my car serviced. A quote doesn't always mean anything. Sometimes there are hidden charges. And finding a new place to get vehicle services as a woman is worse. If you know, you know. I chose Hare Repair based on their great reviews. I called to make an appointment and they are busy. You can't just pop in without notice and have your vehicle serviced. That is another good sign. First of all, Rhonda is the main point of contact before service (quotes, scheduling, etc.). She is a dream. She is responsive, nice, funny, understanding and knowledgeable. When I arrived the morning of my appointment, Rhonda was not in yet. No problem. Other people were there. I was greeted by my name, having never been there before. (I wish I had gotten his name. Also very nice and personable.). The gentleman who greeted me asked what I needed. I explained that I needed brakes work but I wasn't sure if I needed front, back or both. I added that I am getting ready to make a road trip through several different states and I want to make sure that my car is ship-shape. It ended up being a good thing that I mentioned that. Back to that later. I dropped off my car when they opened, 7am. I received a call from Hare Repair at 7:50am that informed me that I need front brakes and he gave me a price LESS than what I was originally quoted. Not a lot less, but less. How often does that happen? Great! I received a call around 10:15am informing me that my car was ready and they replaced a couple of external bulbs that were out. This is where it goes back to me mentioning the road trip. When I picked up my car Rhonda said, "You don't want any lights out on a road trip." No, they did not call me to ask if they could replace the bulbs at a cost. But, I appreciate that they were thinking of ME while out on my road trip. Yes, that is a little more money that they made but I feel that isnworthbit for safety and peace of mind. Honestly, I know vehicle maintenance basics, but they could have told me that I needed both front and rear brakes and I would not have known differently. I was a little torn between 4 or 5 stars. The ONLY reason I considered 4 stars is their business hours. I repeatedly missed opportunities to schedule my service because they close at 2pm/3pm. I have been back to Hare Repair twice more since my first review 7 years ago. Once to have a leaking seal replaced on a 2005 Honda S2000, and more recently for an AC repair on a 2015 Subaru Forester. Despite the current pandemic, their business was running normally with customer safety in mind and no additional wait. I was worried about the cost of the AC repair since this is a known issue for this model year, and the vehicle is no longer under dealer warranty. Jim explained every part of the job and the cost was very fair considering the complexity and difficulty of certain part replacements. I would recommend Hare Repair without hesitation. Wow, owning a car actually requires attention. I guess I never learned that when I was driving my mom's '95 Honda Odyssey. Yes, it was a minivan. I was really a cool kid. So now that I drive a car that I am paying for myself, I'm realizing things like: when the check engine light goes on, you should probably actually get it checked out. I went first to a place in Midtown, where they wanted me to leave the car for the day. No, thanks, I have lunch to eat and Frosted Mini Wheats to buy. So I called Hare, and got Jim on the phone. He said, let me guess, you're a girl who has the check engine light on and you want someone to look at it, tell you what it is, and then you'll figure out what to do. Bingo. I asked him how long it would take. He said 10 minutes, let me guess again, you don't want to spend too much time because you run around like a chicken with its head cut off. Bingo again. so I ask him "How did you know?" and he snorts, "HAH. you're a woman. You have the gene." Wow. Impressive. "... Can you tell my ex-boyfriend that?" I show up, Jim recognizes me, while the other guy who didn't talk to me on the phone says "Let me guess, check engine light." Wow, apparently being a woman is a dead giveaway for why you show up looking clueless to a mechanic. Jim takes 8.3 minutes to check everything. Tells me what to do. Awesome guys. Period. It's so old school here! If you drive down Star lane you'll notice car place after car place. Some of the places do sales, repairs, after market stuff, etc... but the most run down looking place is Hare Repair. I would have never gone here without several friends recommending the place. Wow, what a find! My car was making a lot of noise after I rotated the tires and got two new ones. I was worried about safety so I called Hare Repair. They said to get there by 2:30pm (this was on a Friday afternoon) because they leave early. The guy on the phone was funny. He said they were old and fat and they take Friday afternoons off. So I headed over and got there by 1pm. They promptly took my car for a 5 minute test drive. He came back and said "you're fine!". He explained that I had bad bearings on the front wheels but that they are safe. He said to drive it until it gets louder and then change them. He also said my two older tires were slightly unevenly worn so I was getting extra road noise but that they were also safe. Of course the consultation was free! That would have never happened at the dealership. I really appreciate these guys honesty. So many other mechanics would tell you to change the bearings immediately (which costs several hundred dollars). My husband has been to Hare repair several time and found the same honest courteous old school service. I won't bring my car anywhere else ever again! read more

I own a 10 year old Toyota Corolla, and I needed a checkup given its age plus a few other issues like attaching new plates, oil change, alignment, etc. Because I was new to Houston, I decided to just take it a local dealer nearby and have them look it over and fix up any issues. I wasn't expecting any big problems going in. After waiting for 2.5 hours, I was handed a laundry list of issues that they quoted would cost over $2000 for problems they said were critical - for a car that had just traveled from Miami to Atlanta to Jackson, Mississippi to Baron Rouge to Houston. Needless to say, I declined the suggested fixes and looked up an independent shop to get their opinion. I found this shop to be close to where I live and decided to go see it. They were very friendly and nice and said they'd be happy to do an inspection to see if what they found was consistent with what the dealer claims are issues. I offered them the list of problems from the dealer, and they said they'd rather make their own list and not get biased with someone else's assessment - reasonable. I come back the next day, and they found nothing wrong and suggested I only needed minor maintenance tweaks. Not surprised. I've heard dealers shafting people but this was the first time I've experienced this problem as I was always more worried independent shops doing this. Obviously from that point on, I decided to stick with this as my shop, and I actually had them do an oil change on my mom's Avalon before she drove back since the car was due for one anyway. It's clearly a mom-and-pop shop, and I'm happy to support local small businesses and honest people. I heard some squeaking coming from my car and thought it was the brakes giving out and so I decided to take my car here based on all the good yelp reviews. I called ahead to let them know I was coming and so when I arrived I didn't have to wait long. After they took a look at my car they told me there was nothing wrong with my brakes and that I still had a while before I needed to change my brake pads. I have gone to them for years with multiple vehicles, and they are by far the most dependable, thorough, and honest mechanics I have ever been to. They tell you exactly what they are charging for and why and never try to tack on unnecessary repairs or charges. This is the first time I have ever felt I could 100% trust a mechanic (and I've had a lot of car troubles/mechanic visits over the years). You can tell they take pride in their work and always with a smile on their faces. I took my car to them for my 30k miles general inspection, and they found a prematurely failing shock that the dealership had missed! They didn't insist I get it fixed with them to get my money (like many mechanics would have); they told me, "This should not be happening this early; you need to fight to get the dealership to cover it." As a woman I find anything to do with cars a difficult interaction with those in the field. I always feel like people are trying to pull one over on me because they think I don't know anything. Well IF I don't know - I will research it before I just agree to it! And this is the reason I can't stand so many mechanics. Always trying to say you need this or that, when really - you don't! My check engine light had been on for some time. I had a few mechanics say it was my catalytic converter and each wanted to charge me over 500.00 for a replacement. Well after research I realized I didn't NEED to repair this right away, so I held off. I had that gut feeling not to get it done at either shop too (that's what's good about being a woman) so I opted to also research shops. This is when I found Hare Repair on Yelp. It sounded like it was an honest shop that actually cared about their customers! What a novel concept!! I needed to get an inspection done so I thought I'd make an appointment to have it checked out to see what all I would need - on top of my cc! I had been saving up for the over 500.00 fee I was anticipating. They gave my car a once over and wrote me up an estimate. Even listed out the "order of importance" in order to get my inspection. Most of the items I was able to research and actually do myself at home - yep there are some good youtube videos out there! But for the other major things I was given an estimate of about the same for all the items: hand brake repair, B1S1 Oxygen Sensor (not a new CC), and 3 other things I didn't feel comfortable performing myself. So I had all the repairs done. She's driving like new now and she's officially a Texas car now - passed inspection and has shiny new plates. I am so glad I used Hare Repair! I found them after being overcharged for an estimate and refusing further overpriced service at another place that made me feel super uncomfortable. Hare Repair is the opposite of that place in every way. I was having a few issues with my air conditioner and called them to explain the issue. During my first call, Rhonda made me feel at ease and was very helpful. They scheduled me in easily and were quick to assess the issue. Jim even let me look at the problem to show that he was being honest. He also was able to fix another issue I called him about last minute. They were able to work with my schedule and fixed my car in a few hours. The price of the estimate (which involved labor) was $100 compared to $250 at the other shop. So I went to the place that maintains my lifetime alignment and they discovered an oil leak, and torn boot, and a leaking steering rack and made recommendation for over $2500.00 worth of repairs. It has had a leaking steering rack for a few years. But the oil leak was news to me. They wanted to do add oil leak detection fluid to my oil to precisely locate the leak. ($49.90) They also tried to sell me on new plugs, new brakes, new coils. It was just silly, it reminded me of a tv show that punks people. However, the newly discovered oil leak worried me. So I came over to Hare Repair and they immediately put it up on the rack and looked it over. They told me I could just wait on getting any work done. They diagnosed the oil leak, confirmed the steering rack and boot issues, and told me I can just wait to this stuff fixed. So they didn't need to use the oil additive in order to diagnose the oil leak. So Hard Repair could have very easily told me that I needed to do fix the leak, replace the rack, etc. They told me I could hold off on it all. Nothing urgent. read more

They gave me the best bid for replacing it but after receiving my car I had more problems after I got it back. They fixed the problem but now my air doesn't work properly now, which it worked perfectly fine before I put it in the shop. I also noticed some grease marks on the dash and window ceil. Not a good visit. Might give them another shot if I ever have a problem. Update: check engine light turned on miles after driving it. Wouldn't recommend this place. Will not come back. Wonderful place and great people! They couldn't see me until today so I went to another place for a first opinion on what was going on with my car's AC. That shop told me I needed to replace my entire AC unit and it was going to cost me over $1600. I dropped my car off this morning for my appointment with Hare Repair and, besides the staff being friendly and welcoming, they determined it was a much smaller part in my AC that needed to be replaced along with the Freon, totaling right around $200. Any business with high ratings like this I would be suspicious of. What was also suspicious was there were no cars to be seen in their lot. They most likely don't get much business except from naive people from who look at reviews on yelp. This particular business I'll never go to again. I talked to Jim who I guess is the owner. He gave me a reasonable estimate compared to other shops in the area so I dropped my car off here overnight. The next morning he calls me up to tell me there is nothing wrong with my car...... So I give him troubleshooting tips to reproduce the problem...... Later in the day he calls back again and tells me that he'll need to tack on an extra $150 because the threading stripped when they removed the part that needed replacing. I am not happy. I now have zero trust in them. I call a tow truck service to tow my car to another shop. I call Jim to tell him I want a receipt of the work they did. He then argues with me about why I want a receipt of the work and why I don't trust him. He even has a laugh during the argument. Total bullshit, because of his incompetence now my car has two problems and who knows what else they did. I go to another shop who fixes my car up and and charges me less. Don't make the mistake of using the internet to find a good mechanic. Word of mouth is the best way. YULP is no longer trustworthy. Businesses can now pay to have only the good reviews shown. Creeping up to 400 reviews made me think that I'd like to showcase something special for Review #400 - and, fortuitously, I had a small bit of work done on my Honda at Hare Repair. An excellent shop with definite characters who don't try to up-sell customers while providing honest work at a reasonable price: what more could you want in your mechanic? Several friends have been singing Hare Repair's praises (and, Jim Hughes' in particular) so I was a bit glad (if that word can be used when talking about car repairs) that I had a reason to throw them some business. During braking, I began to hear an oscillating sound from the rear brakes. It faded out after I stopped but would repeat throughout the afternoon commute. I wasn't worried that my car was going to go all "24" on me and blow up, taking out me and a good chunk of the the local Inner Loop hobo population, but I know enough that cars do NOT heal themselves. Plus, this sound didn't come as a factory-installed item when I bought it 9 years ago. Rather than take it to the local Honda dealership where I've been placing more and more cash into their hands, I opted to try out Hare Repair. A quick call on a Friday morning had me talking to the charming Angela, who patched me through to Jim Hughes. We talked about the issue, I mimicked the sound (no, I will not embarrass myself and repeat it to you), and he asked if I could bring it by the shop at 1 PM. We took a quick drive where he tried various things to get the sound to repeat itself while he also listened to the overall brake system and car performance. He let me know that I had been doing a great job taking care of Old Faithful and it was purring nicely for being 9 years old. Based on his experience and his gut, he thought that the rear rotors were a bit warped. But, he said that they would put it on the lift, take off the tires, and take a longer look at the drums. Within 15 minutes, he confirmed the slight warping but put me at ease by saying that the only one who would really care would be me; the car would still perform competently and safely. I asked him if I could get at least another 4 years without this issue coming back if we went ahead and machined the rotors to cure the warping. Jim said: "No problem". Then, I asked what the cost would be and a quick "$100" was provided. I exhaled and was barely able to contain my enthusiasm at this reasonable number. Approved the work, the guys got on the job, and I was back in business in about 20 minutes. Jim said to let him know either way if the sound went away or if it came back. I think he honestly wants feedback and I'll gladly report that the sound is gone. Far be it for me to jinx myself but I'd gladly go back to Hare Repair. And, I enthusiastically recommend them to anyone who needs their Japanese and American-made cars serviced. He doesn't work on German cars but that's a problem for those owners, isn't it? * Be aware that Jim Hughes is NOT politically-correct and has lots of funny stories to tell. Luckily, he's not running for Congress but be glad that an honest guy who is willing to explain things without condescension is here to work on our cars. I honestly do not know anything about cars, but the total was less than $300. I trusted the yelp reviewers that this would be as good as it gets! I only paid for the part, which was the direct cost from the dealership. They ordered it for me and told me that they would call me when it came in. When I brought the car in for the actual repair, Jim took the car out, and they started working on it. After 10 to 20 minutes, he came in and said "that was the easiest repair I have ever done... no labor charge." I was completely shocked. He said usually there are some wires and other things that you have to be careful about when replacing driver mirror, but there was nothing like that with the scion. I actually insisted several times to pay for the labor because I have no idea how to do it myself. I really wanted to pay for their skill and time, and I wanted to support their business. He just shook my hand and shooed me out! I kept turning around and asking "are you sure? I can pay!" He just said "Go! I'll lock the door if you try to come back." Funny man. read more

The first time I brought my car in to get my brakes checked for a squeak, Jim said that my brakes had a lot of life left and that the squeak was probably just from dirt and the cheap-quality brakes that were installed. He asked me if I wanted him to clean it off, and I agreed. I paid $30 for what could have easily been $300 at a less reputable mechanic who wouldn't have hesitated to take my money. Two years later, I brought my car in again, noting that the brakes felt a little worn (with an occasional grinding feeling) whenever I stepped on the brake pedal. I walked into the front door, and Jim was giving the guy at the other end of the phone holy hell for taking too long to find a part. "I'mma hang ya if you don't hurry up," he growled into the receiver. "Not hang up. Hang ya!" What made it more hilarious was that he was instantly courteous to me as he welcomed me, but immediately blasted the guy at the other end of the phone for failing to find the part he was looking for. "You're useless! I'm hanging up!" he shouted as he slammed down the phone, then turned and smiled at me to ask what he can do for me today. No wonder everyone loves Jim. I left my car at the shop and a couple of hours later, Jim called to say that my brakes STILL had enough life left to last me at least 6000 miles or 3-6 months, and that it was up to me whether to replace them now or come back. How many mechanics are you willing to turn you away a second time instead of just taking your money? I opted to go ahead and have my brakes replaced since they were pretty crappy anyway. I also asked Jim if he knew where I can get my alignment checked (sadly they don't do it at their shop) and he pointed me to a nearby place, and told me to mention that Jim at Hare Repair sent me so that "they'll have the fear of God struck into them".
