It came out hot, fresh, and delicious. They offer indoor and outdoor seating, with an indoor/outdoor intercom so you can hear when your order is ready, regardless of where you sit. I ordered their Big Nick Mac, a take on the Big Mac with seasoned fries, house-made thousand-island dressing, lettuce, pickles, diced onions, and cheese. My…read moreunderstanding is that there are 12 locations now, and that all are company spots - in fact, the company has very directly said that they are not currently offering franchise opportunities. The12 spots stretch from Jacksonville NC in the east to Hendersonville in the west! And there appear to be plans to expand into Greensboro, and perhaps Burlington. I like that these are company run operations, it can make quality controls matters easier to administer and monitor. Perhaps the biggest contributor to inconsistent quality at fast food chains is the quality control mandates are not vigorously enforced. The only major chain that I'm aware of that does insist standards be met is Jersey Mike's, and they have even suspended franchisee agreements of non- compliant stores. This is a very nice location, bright and shiny with easy access to drive thru or parking. I ordered two hot dogs, one with mustard and sauerkraut and one with mustard, chili, and onions. I don't order the combo here because I don't care for the FF. As usual the hot dogs were excellent, and I am becoming quite fond of the sauerkraut dog - the kraut has a nice bite to it. All in all this was a very good spot, perhaps the best Dairi-o I've visited.

You have to understand, that I am a total burger snob. As a reference point, my favorite burger in the Piedmont Triad is Hops Burger Bar in Greensboro, and I'll drive the 20 miles and stand around waiting on a table for 30 minutes, at the first suggestion, no questions asked. Also way up there is/was Big Burger Spot, but they've now slipped into third place since Guy is no longer the owner and overseer and now that I've had the burgers at Thunder Road. First off, they will cook your burger to your desired doneness. For me, that's the minimum standard that a burger joint has to meet, and my medium-rare burgers have been spot-on every time. From there, the buns, the topping, the sides have always been fresh, tasty and again, done to order to meet my picky requests! "Can I get those tots crispy?" "Since I haven't tried it, can you put that sauce on the side?" "Can you cook that bacon crispy but not burnt?" Each request was met with something like a "You bet!" and the execution of the request was perfect. I really like that each table is equipped with a roll of paper towels and several condiments including the local Texas Pete, as well as salt, pepper, and some form of seasoning salt. Often when I see these things on tables in diners they are grimy and the table beneath then is sticky and dirty, but they make an extra effort to keep them clean and well stocked. For example, last week I grabbed the red bottle of Heinz ketchup, expecting that I would need to request a swap with a full bottle, but no, it was totally full! Just like when I was a kid, I love crunchy potato chips on my peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and I like fries with my ketchup! Let's face the facts that one of these days I'm bound to be disappointed in something, but from what I can see from the friendly and attentive staff, it's going to something I can overlook or that they'll be willing to address. Oh, that reminds me about the bathrooms! I often dread entering the men's room in a one-off diner or pub, but I was elated to find a clean and fresh smelling space that was well lit and well supplied. They've won us over. Last Saturday we bought three of our granddaughters, and today will be joined by my sister and brother-in-law, who are also locals and bound to become fans of Thunder Road Grill! Though they're not my favorite type of fries, these were well cooked, soft on the inside without being mealy like most crinkles are; while having a nice crispy exterior. If I have to have crinkle cut fries, I'd prefer Dairi-O's. I also tried their tzatziki sauce because I love that as a dipping sauce for fries and it was pretty spot on. At first, when I saw it on the menu, my thought was, "what does a burger joint really know about tzatziki sauce?" Turns out, a lot. It was creamy, tangy, with just the right amount of fresh cucumber and dill. Over all, as far as I'm concerned, it's a solid fast food choice that feels less like fast food and more like eating a perfect burger from your backyard grill.
