This is the place for regular non professional guys who need tools for smaller home projects. I came in search of a hand truck with platform. The one I had was purchased maybe 15 years ago. It's still in fair condition: my family used this one to move out from two separate office buildings and two apartments! The price for the replacement was maybe 20$ more than before. Not bad considering inflation and supply chain issues! I saw also good values on some hand tools like sledgehammers and regular carpenter hammers, many tool boxes probably 40% cheaper than big box stores. Good communication between staff from the Buena Park location and here - the original store was out of the item I wanted to purchase and I was redirected to the Lakewood location. The staff at Lakewood held it for me until I arrived maybe 30 minutes later. The customer service gets the extra star. This location also has a Sprouts grocery, Homegoods and Marshall's plus Alin party supply. So I completed other tasks besides! read more

A somewhat decent place to get the tools you need at ridiculously low prices. If you get junky mail, you'll see some Harbor Freight coupons every now and then. Some of these coupons can save you 20 percent on an item. Some are free with any purchase. Some are just simply discounts, but they all show how much you save compared to competitors. Savings galore! Yet only 3 stars? Well it's closer to 3.5, but not enough to warrant the 4th star in my opinion. Located at the northwest corner of Woodruff & Carson, Harbor Freight Tools is in the middle of a strip mall that includes Sprouts and Smart & Final, both of which I frequent from time to time. Shopping at either of the S stores is quite pleasant for me save for the occasional long checkout lines, but here? Not so much. Every time I visit the store, I always try to spend no more than 10 minutes inside. Why? The stench inside is just too odorous for me. Ugh! And if I don't know where the product I want to purchase is, that's additional time spent having to deal with the pungent odor. I can never imagine working in an environment like that. Gotta give credit to the employees for having to deal with the smell every time they come to work. Speaking of the employees, they can be pushy to get you to sign up for their catalog, which I think is unnecessary since they'll still honor your coupons and the low prices even if you don't sign up. Because of this, I don't particularly feel comfortable checking out, but lately, I've noticed they haven't been as pushy as before. If there's a long checkout line, it will run along one of the aisles. You may find yourself walking towards the front of the store thinking that there's no line for checkout, but when you turn towards the center of the store, you'll see that the line runs along a different aisle, and it's a long wait. I had that happen one time, and I had to wait 10+ minutes. To make matters worse, I actually ended up getting a similar, but different, item than what my coupon specified. Luckily, the cashier allowed me to retrieve the correct item, bypass the line, and show her the correct item before leaving the store. PRO TIP: If you're using a coupon, the coupon will specify an item number. The products in the store also have an item number, so you can check to see if you are getting the correct product. I'm not a handyman whatsoever, so perhaps my review is biased towards the lower end of the rating spectrum. There was literally no one else around so why can't you help me find it? So I look and don't see it. I walk up to the front again and show them on their website that it's in stock. Cashier calls who I presume to be a manager. This large man walks over and when he finds it, makes an "It's right here," comment in a tone of voice as if 'why were you unable to find this yourself,' abruptly turns and briskly walks off as if I had been a bother. Sunday an employee & manager were extremely rude. I came here with the purpose of switching one item for another & paying the difference. "Bought the same day hours earlier" The employee began by accepting my return and giving me my cash back... but the cash was $10 short. Which I never put in my pocket. I left on the counter because that same cash was going towards the new item. The manager comes and starts belittling the employee about how you can't trust the customer when it comes to cash & to read the receipt "which he's still holding" I am still standing there in front while this all happens. Then as I get the rest of my cash back, they call the back room employees to bring my new item to the register.. he asks me to stand back while it arrives and one customer would check out while I wait for my product.. When the product arrives I get back into the checkout & the employee with disgust in his face tells me he's going to help out the other customers that are ahead of me & that I need to wait my turn... I tell him I already did my time in the line... but it didn't matter he told me to get in the back of the line. Which was super long, 9+ customer ready to pay in line. I felt it was unfair I was being treated wrong, no apologies were issued & I dont want to make this a racial thing but I was the only latino in the store. I left embarrassed with my dad, I strongly advice the company trains their employees and managers. Harbor Freight is one of those shops and places you go to that you have to always remind yourself that you get what you pay for. The deals here can look absolutely fabulous and I have not ever been let down myself but buyer beware. Always take a look for coupons for great free offers and 20% off of your purchase. I have purchased an air compressor, battery powered tools, wood clamps, tarps, etc SO much stuff. Keep in mind I am not a pro, I am not using these things even remotely once a month, but when I do the tools generally don't let me down. Especially for the price paid. Store always smells like rubber from tires or something and the line up for checking out can be confusing for some (which always annoys the people that do line up properly). When Termite died we got him a army green camo....we had to transport him in style to be creamated. Then when our Mariah passed we went to buy her a tarp. This is not about any particular store but the quality of their products. The heavy duty AA batteries won't run a clock for more than a few days. Their rechargeable batteries use to be good but now do not hold a charge anywhere as long as they use to and seem to lose power after one use They use the heavy duty batteries as giveaways so I guess you can't expect much but selling batteries that you pay good money for is deceitful since there is no way to tell if they are good by looking at them. I would highly recommend not buying any batteries from Harbor Freight until they improve their quality control read more

I visited this location for the first time the other day. I needed a floor jack for my car. I was looking around until an employee (Darin) asked if I needed any help. Darin was extremely helpful and even told me to look up a Harbor Freight coupon on my phone that I didn't know about, so I saved some money there. Harbor Freight has a lot more than your basic wrenches, sockets and screw drivers too. They have tool boxes, hand tools, air tools, power tools, generators, plasma cutters, floor jacks, transmission jacks, pallet jacks, engine stands, jack stands, wood lathes, metal lathes, air compressors, pressure washers, cement mixers, bearing pullers, folding trailers, propane torches, battery chargers, siphon pumps, tubing benders, air hose reels, bench grinders, hammer drills, infrared thermometers and ultrasonic cleaners among many, many, many other items. CUSTOMER SERVICE: While there seems to be relatively few staff in the store at any time, they have been generally helpful when I needed assistance with something. However, they very rarely have more than one register open at ANY time, unless it's a big sale weekend, then they'll have two registers open. This means you often have to wait in a slow moving line. Harbor Freight is more for the backyard mechanic or home owner or others, who needs tools but either can't afford the good stuff, or are too cheap to buy the good stuff. In my case, they were having their big bi-annual "parking lot sale" and I picked up a few tools I needed for a one time job and couldn't justify the need to spend 3-4 times the $$ on I will only use once or MAYBE twice. The Toyz R Us for tools. Its a big store with lots of selection and a good amount of stock. I buy tons of tools from here and I pay a fraction of what it cost on a tool truck. Granted some things don't have the same quality, you'll get away with 90% of the tools they sell. Look for their coupons online, usually 20% off and your golden. This place just moved a few doors down into the same building as the party rental store. With the move, it shed it's "Uncle's Garage Sale" vibe, and started looking like a real hardware store. The aisles are now wide and clean, and items are organized better. Men, if you come here, you must bring your woman, if you have one. She will help you find stuff, because the stuff you want. may not be in the obvious place. A lot of men were smart, and had ladies accompanying them. I saw other woman-free men wandering aimlessly through the store. And there were several single ladies shopping sans men. I'm not saying this is a place to pick up women, but the new, brighter location seems to be more conducive to attracting female shoppers. I arrived with Mr. P. He had a laundry list of stuff he wanted. I helped him find some stuff, then I got bored and sifted through the clearance bin. Surprisingly, there's good stuff on that cart. I pulled out a set of discounted deep impact sockets. The stuff on the clearance cart can be returned within 5 days (which is cool, because other places don't let you return clearance stuff). I apologize about not going on and on about the tool porn, like other reviewers. HF does have all kinds of hand tools, power tools, air tools, car tools, electronic tools, yard tools, machetes and survival knives, and home improvement gadgets. A little bit of outdoor furniture, too. Getting around the store was easy. Getting out, not so much. Mr. P had coupons. When Mr. P had the wrong item for a coupon, a employee cordially and quickly fetched the correct item. Still, it took a while to get through Mr. P's purchase because he had so many coupons. I didn't know my man was into coupons, big time. Finally, after Mr. P paid, the register refused to print his receipt. It took four employees to fix the problem. I started telling "How many Harbor Freight employees does it take to change a light bulb" jokes. The employees were friendly and helpful, and were quick to offer help. I've been a HF customer for YEARS and have spent ALOT of money during that time; HOWEVER, they just lost ALL of my future business. I purchased a tile saw last week at the Lakewood Store. After opening it I discovered that it did NOT include a blade, so I placed it all back in the box with the original packing and receipt only to be told at the Covina store that I would be charged a $12 restocking fee for the $60 item because the box had been opened. WTF???? The cashier told me that I would have known that if I would have read the back of my receipt. That won't be necessary since I won't be shopping at Harbor Freight any more. I hope HF enjoys the 20% fee they charged me on a saw which they will just place back on the shelf and sell to someone else. I subsequently went to Lowe's and purchased a higher quality, american made, tile saw, which when you consider included a blade, was less expensive than the Chinese crap that HF peddles. read more

This is a no-frills hardware store that carries all kinds of cheap tools for the do-it-yourselfer. As Steven M. mentioned, these products are made in China, which helps to explain why the prices are discounted. Upon entering the store, you're hit with the peculiar aroma of rubber (and whatever other chemicals are in that smell). The store is well laid-out with the aisles clearly labeled by categories of products. Coming here on the weekend can be a zoo. The last time I was here (4th of July weekend) it was rather busy and there were only 2 checkstands open with the lines going deep into the main aisles of the store. Thankfully, by the time I got closer to the front, they opened a third checkstand and I immediately made a beeline for it. :-D They have all kinds of coupons in the local circulars plus you can get them if you're on their mailing list. These can come in handy if you're a frequent buyer. Parking is shared with other neighboring shops and can get crazy on the weekends. read more

It's only been recently that I've been in tune to just how great Harbor Freight can be when it comes to tooling, hardware and other DIY needs and necessities. The amount of stuff they have and especially the price really stands out for me...but I seem to have a problem each time I come in - customer service. I will challenge Steven M's remark about not expecting top notch customer service because it's a "discount" hardware store. I would expect the same customer service here as I would at any other establishment looking to have me as a paying customer. So when I come in and see several wondering shoppers with confused looks on their faces (including myself) and one customer service helper nowhere to be found, I get agitated...frustrated...pick your word. And as a customer who is spending money at an establishment, it becomes a pain coming back time and time again. On one hand, I love their prices...I love the selection...on the other hand, I hate dealing with trying to get help if I can't find something. That too is a problem...finding things. There's no real flow to the store. The isles have tags telling you quite generally and vaguely what's in each isle. So if you're looking for something in particular, it might take you a good 10-15 minutes of cruising down each isle to find it...or you can wait for someone to help you (good luck). What is the saving grace of this review (besides the selection and prices) is when you do get help, it's usually quite good. My last visit I went to the front after searching for some help and in an obviously frustrated manner I expressed my need for some help finding a few items. I eventually was greeted by a gentleman who helped me find what I needed. Getting back to the front to checkout and pay for my items, the man I asked for some help asked if I found everything I needed. I was happy to see that they at least attempt to care what the customer is feeling about the level of customer service that's attempted to be provided. In a time where people are out of work, why not have more than one customer service rep on the floor? It's not like Harbor Freight is a "mom n' pop" shop...this is a large chain!!! No reason why you can't have 2-3 people helping customers out. I like coming here when I KNOW what I need, but there's much to improve upon. read more

It's a good place to go if you need fairly inexpensive tools or odd tools, like the ratchet set I have where the wrenches pivot at the head. The have a lot of truly weird stuff, pet stuff, household bits and do-dads, model boats and planes, and some stuff that is out and out junk, like an air pump I bought for $10.00, noisy and not very effective. On the other hand, the coupons are nice, and can save you some bucks. They have a few brands that are exclusive, like Chicago Electric for power tools, which are okay for light use, but are not on the same level as even some of the big box store brands. This is not a knock...not everyone has money for a $50 dollar drill to use around the house. The have some reasonable household tools and some tools that home (auto) mechanics may find useful. So I call ahead because I don't want to drive 20 minutes to find out they don't have my item. I'm in the middle of a project and my 10 inch metal cutting saw blade craps out on me. The guy who answers says hold on I'll check. In less than 2 minutes, cool, he says "yeah, we have it". I drive over and can't find it. The manager up front asks one cashier he was talking to if he answered the phone and he says no. So the manager goes down the same aisle and says we have a 9 inch metal grinding blade. I tell him I'm here for a cutting blade and not a grinder. He just looks at me. Kind of like that "if you wanted good service why are you here" look. No apologies or whatever.
