You don't realize how lucky you are to be close to Louisiana until you're in West Texas for 4 years. You come back to a place like Happy's, and it tastes like a Michelin Star establishment compared to the seafood up in Lubbock. Where is that fish from? The ponds? Ain't no way. Happy's is a staple of Tyler. Owned by the same team as Mercados and Posados, Happy's is their only seafood establishment, and it is a fine piece of art. Inside, there's plenty of lamps and fish hanging on the walls and decor that feels strongly inspired by Mardi Gras. The truest display of their beauty is a chandelier made of Corona bottles. I was meeting my aunt and uncle for lunch with my girlfriend, and my uncle knows this place up and down. You could tell it's one of his favorite spots in Tyler by how he lit up when I suggested it as the place we go to lunch together while I was visiting. We used to go quite a bit when I was still living in Tyler, and he still knows the name of the waitresses and they love him back. I went for the Catfish Po Boy because man did it sound fire. I got it with a side of fries and fried okra. The okra was great and the fries were super crispy. The Po Boy itself was the star of the show. I unwrapped it and destroyed the entire thing. The catfish side was super crispy and delicious and had a fantastic flavor. It tasted fresh and I knew it was really special. My girlfriend got the gumbo and thought it was incredible as well along with eating half of my fried okra. Happy's might have some of the best seafood in Tyler. This is highly decorated restaurant that has a lot of personality! We went for lunch, Kristen was our server, she was polite but very slow. We started with the onion rings for an appetizer, in fact we received our appetizer before we received our drinks.. that is how slow Kristen was. We asked for lemons a couple of times, by the time we were halfway through with our lunch, we finally received them... The onion rings were delicious! The right amount of crunch with the perfect amount of Cajun seasoning! So good! I had the catfish po boy with fried okra and French fries. The bread was a good, the catfish was tasty, very thin though. The fried okra and French fries were good too. My husband had the catfish plate, also had fried okra and French fries as his side. I arrived a little late 730pm on a Tuesday evening. I started the worry because they're the place was empty. I was promptly seated and ordered the catfish basket with shrimp and side of okra and Boudin link. The catfish was lightly breaded and definitely a large portion, it was cooked perfectly. There were two large butterfly fried shrimp that needed a little sauce that tasted very good. The Boudin Link was delicious and I'm glad I got it. Breakfast at Happy's is highly recommended. We don't eat breakfast away from home very often, just when necessary. We usually eat here for a lunch meal. ( That by the way, is always a good meal.) This place was really great when it was new and during the first few years. Sadly the service and food have declined and I refuse to go back. The last and final time we went we knew we would never return. We had four in our group and went for breakfast. All of the food was too greasy and bland. The hush puppies might have been leftover and refried. They were that bad. I was disgusted. Service was terrible. It was $100 for the worst meal I have ever had. A fly was circling our table the entire time. The dining area smelled like old rancid seafood. Tables were dirty. Floors were dirty. I could not wait to leave. My husband had grits and they were overcooked and disgusting, catfish was extra foul, quite pungent, overly greasy and the texture and flavor was off. The fish is light and crispy. The shrimp are large and oh so good. Love the sides. The drinks are great and so is the sweet tea. Our only complaint is that it is sometimes cold in there! Service is always extra friendly. We drive 45 minutes to get here because its worth the drive. read more

I went to Happy's on Memorial Day to have a great cheeseburger - one that I've had there many times prior. To my surprise, they changed the bun and meat - both taking the quality of the burger to less than average standards. My friend and I asked the waitress about the change, and she explained that the owners decided to change many things...and that the burger components might be even more costly than the prior. 11 years after being disrespected at Happy's, when they declined to wait on us, my wife and I decided to give the place another try. This time, the service was phenomenal. We were sat and waited on quickly. Our waitress was great. I had a fried shrimp platter and my wife had fried shrimp and etouffee. You get a good amount of food for your money, but we both found the flavor of the food to be just okay. Even my salad tasted bland, which is pretty weird. This place does a lot of business, and seems to be very popular in Tyler. But we won't be in any hurry to go back there. When my mom was in hospital, I drove by this place daily. I'd read about it on Tyler page with somewhat mixed reviews at times. My husband had a procedure this morning and was starving when he got done and we decided we'd give it a try. I had the "bacon and eggs" and he had "chicken fried steak". The portions are huge! The menu is quite large and I struggled finding the plate that actually fit what I wanted to get so I wound up getting fried catfish fried shrimp, a side of onions and coleslaw. My husband ordered fried shrimp at etefe' with rice and french fries. We also ordered the seafood fondue. We were starving. We did come home with a to go box.. I did not like their tartar sauce. I did not like their cocktail sauce, nor did I really like their slaw. All of them tasted like they come from a bottle or store-bought. The onion rings are very good. They are hand battered. My family cooks great fried seafood at home so it has to be super good to get a five star for me because we do that at home. They do have a seasoning and I guess they make it. They also sell it there.. it is very good and everything on your plate will need sprinkled with that or I would consider a bit bland. I love the fun and funky decor of this place. It really gets the NOLA vibe, and the food lives up to the Cajun stuff from there. The service was friendly and attentive, and our server was especially helpful with comments and opinions when we asked. I smiled to see a couple of reviewers thought food portions were small for the price. Admittedly, I live in Austin where things are surely more expensive, but my $18 Shrimp and catfish strip entree was way more than I could eat--and I can really eat! Our basket of Hush Puppies, which we only ordered to make a donation to some dog charity, was delicious. To me, Hush Puppies are those little grease balls I eat if the rest of the meal didn't fill be up, but these were worthwhile on their own account. My entree was all fried, apart from the Rice & Beans. That can get gross, if the frying isn't expertly done, but this stuff was. Onion Rings to die 4, great shrimp, and wonderful catfish. There was so much food, I took catfish and hush puppies to go, and they tasted great two days later in my air fryer. My friend is a better human than I and got grilled Talapia with rice. My mom and I were traveling through Tyler when we decided to stop at Happy's Fish House for an early lunch (11:15 AM). Our waitress, Kelly, was super informative about the menu options and was very attentive to our table. For my meal, I had two grilled shrimp tacos (dinner portion) and I substituted one of my sides for a house salad with ranch. The food was plentiful and delicious! I couldn't even eat my second side (sautéed veggies) because I was so stuffed! If I could make one (very minor) adjustment to the whole experience I would say the bathrooms could use a little remodel because they were a pretty small compared to the immaculate size of the restaurant. Y'all. A seafood place has BREAKFAST!!! All day!! Who knew? Well I didn't, but I do now!! All I can say is...YUM!! I had to get a sort of sampler plate so I could try a little bit of everything since it was my first time, and I wasn't disappointed by any of it. I had eggs, bacon, sausage, ham, hash browns and pancakes. They even had sugar free syrup for me! Everything was so good - and then I had a bite of my hub's Cajun breakfast...and now I know. I won't pass that up next time! The andouille sausage was ahhhh-mazing!! I have to say my very favorite thing was the Hapoy's seasoning. It was good on my eggs, my hash browns, and pretty much everything it touched. Of course I had to buy some to bring home with me! Nom!!
