Like I had accidentally walked into a staff meeting or a crime scene. At some point it hit me. Oh. They think I'm a cop. Not because I did anything. But because I was standing upright. And sober. And aware. Which, apparently, after 11 pm here is suspicious behavior. For the record, I am not law enforcement. I am just a guy who is cold and trying to hear music. I wasn't kicked out. I wasn't served. I was just... ignored. Like if they pretended I didn't exist long enough, I might fade away. So I left. Nothing dramatic happened. It was just awkward. Uncomfortable. I rode along with my friends to Bake's with no idea what to expect except that there would be dancing involved. We pulled up to a windowless dive with a set of "rules" posted on the door. One of those is that you must be fully clothed at all times. WOW what kind of place is this? Is this something that happens so much in there that they had to specify you should keep your clothes on? We walked in and had to get carded and hand stamped and pay $5 cover. COVER? WTF! But hey, it was only $5. The chick taking the $$ clearly didn't read the front door because she was wearing a slutty Santa outfit and it didn't cover a whole lot of skin. When you get inside you see rows of tables in front of you, bar to the left against the wall, a dance floor to your right, and on the other side of the dance floor it appeared to be pool tables. We got some beer and the BF announced that they were some pretty pricey beers for a dive but I am not sure exactly how much they were. I was entertained by the music selections the DJ was rocking - there would be nasty gangster rap followed by some two-stepping worthy country music. Random alert!! This place was A-OK though for the people watching. Let me tell you, Terrell clearly has no shortage of characters. People ranged in age from 18 to about 75 and were dressed in everything from gangster chic to douchey Ed Hardy to cowboy boots and hats. I danced with a cowboy that must have been in his 70s who managed to get low low low low low low low and then dance his way on back to a standing position. He's been working on that move! Another little dude grinding on his GF so much that one of our friends said "He's gonna rub his little peter off!" hahahahaha And a chick coming out of the bathroom that I sweartagod I thought was a dude. DOH! You could spend an entire evening in this place just for the people watching and I highly recommend you do so. The queso had just the right amount of smokey goodness. The cheese fries were not overly covered so everything wasn't soggy. Great call. We were so full after that we shared a popcorn shrimp entree. I consider myself a popcorn shrimp expert and this was outstanding. Couldn't stop eating it. Almost made myself sick as I didn't want to leave any of it. Oh so good! Pricing is extremely reasonable. If you are in Jefferson this is a must-stop for great food, at least for lunch as that is when we were there.

As the restaurant jokingly notes, they have the worse parking situation in Tyler. In reality, it was not the worst, but it is not good. There are just a handful of spots around the restaurant so you have to drive around and find a place. There was a line, but it moved pretty quickly. There was plenty of seating outside and there is an air-conditioned seating area that I did not see until we were already seated. The kid had the chopped brisket sandwich and although she did not like it very much, I tried it and I liked it better than my sliced brisket. The wife had a Texas taco (with brisket) and liked it. I had 1/2 pound of brisket, lean. The price was much lower than in Dallas. I added a side of Mac n' cheese. The brisket had great bark and was super tender. I got the lean that I wanted, but honestly it was a bit dry. Plus, I mistakenly applied the hot and spicy sauce to my brisket and it was so incredibly peppery that it was virtually inedible. I had to scrape it off and apply the regular sauce. I cannot who can tolerate that peppery sauce, it was just way too hot. For reasons we never understand but that always seems to happen, big groups that came after us were served their food before us. I don't get how that always happens. Overall, it was a good experience and if we return II would try some different things on the menu.
