Love this place! My daughter broke her arm and we were at the hospital all day. When we left we were all so hungry. It was 8 pm and my daughter found Happy Sushi on line and said let's try it. We were worried about getting there so close to close 8:30, but hoped for the best. They welcomed us in! It was very clean and organized. Not a lot of seating. We got several sushi rolls, noodles and some ramen. It was excellent. The owned stopped by the table to talk to my daughter with the busted arm and made her feel better. I really can't overstate how bad this sushi was. I am certainly hoping we make it through the next 24 hours without getting sick. There was definitely some "bad" fish (tasted old) in the rolls, which fell completely apart the moment you attempted to pick them up. Ambiance? The large bowl of rice sitting outside the bathroom was a bad look. The server was nice enough, but the best service in the world could not offset the poor quality of the food. I have had better sushi from the grocery store and from Sam's Club. The saddest part? I had been wanting to try "the best sushi in Springfield" for the last two years! For your reference- we had 4 rolls- spicy tuna, Alaska roll (salmon), French kiss (shrimp tempura, crab, salmon), and Caribbean orgazam (soft shell crab, salmon). Visiting from Southern California, I hoped to find a quality sushi place in Central Illinois. When I saw Happy Sushi had several hundred excellent Yelp reviews, giving them a shot was a no-brainer. Located in a nondescript little strip mall in Springfield, this restaurant would be easy to miss. Glad I didn't -- the food earned five stars for taste, freshness, portion size and presentation. Let's start off with the waiter that has a hard time with English. Next, it was a while before they took our order. The sitting area where we were was behind the kitchen and looked like a narrow corridor with 3 tables sandwiched in. I sat with my back against the fridge. Hand rolls had a pile of salmon - I've never seen so much of it in a single roll, so much that the whole thing didn't taste good. Alaska, Philly, and California rolls were a mass of rice that fell apart as soon as I grabbed it with chopsticks. The rice wasn't sticky. It's probably one of the saddest sushi places I've been to. Aside from the below average sushi. This place is extremely nasty. You crave sushi in town? Osaka isn't that great but it's a lot better than this place. I tried the French roll ($17), spicy tuna ($9) and avocado roll ($5). Spicy tuna was too fishy and tasted off and ended up wasting it instead, I don't wanna get sick. They weren't clean at all. The sushi chef was so rushed that he kept dropping and picking up the sauce bottles off the floor SO MANY times using the same gloves, he still used the sauce and use the contaminated gloves to continue making the sushi and dipping his dirty gloves touching all ingredients. We finally went to Happy Sushi Friday night and it was well worth it. We started with Miso Soup, which was nice and rich. I had the Man of Fire Rool and my spouse had the Red Dragon Roll both were very good, well made with fresh ingredients. The waiter was efficient and knowledgeable. Easily the best sushi we have had in Springfield. We recently moved here from Orange County CA, home of multiple GREAT sushi places. They do make their rolls wider in circumference compared to other sushi places, keep this in mind.
