Love this place. It's family owned and operated. Eating at Hunan's is like eating at home but better. I always try my hand at Asian cuisine but mine is just not as good as there's...not even close. Went for lunch today, first upon entering it smelled like someone had been staining furniture. Tried to substitute a crab Rangoon for an egg roll but got a whole order of crab Rangoon. So, we accepted it and still got the egg roll with the General Toa's Chicken. The other order was Seafood and vegetables which was very undercooked. The waitress didn't like it but sent it back. I got Broccoli and beef as a replacement and the beef was nearly raw. The waitress both times tried to explain how it was cooked, so got a to go container to take home to cook later. I guess it was the manager that came by after they brought the ticket and asked if everything was OK. I told him it was not, but he really didn't care and still charged me for the uncooked food very disappointed and poor service and communications. read more

The service was very quick and polite. I did the AYCE sushi for $32 before tip. The place is clean. The crab Rangoon were great. I enjoyed the salmon dream roll and the palatine roll. The Mexico roll was different bc the jalapeño was thick cut but I think I liked that. The sushi tasted fine and did not taste fishy. The spicy mayo is more mayo tasting than spicy. I should have added siracha to make it to my liking. Overall, the meal was more on the bland side which isn't necessarily bad for sushi (bc fishy taste would be bad). The food here is always fresh and delicious. I have been going here for many years and have never gotten a bad meal. The staff is always super friendly. Tonight we got carryout of garlic chicken, Mongolian beef, cashew chicken, and general tsos chicken. I can't remember all the sushi rolls, crab rangoon and eggrolls. Everything was hot and fresh when we picked it up. The sushi was fresh and so flavorful. They give you plenty of sauces in your bag that would need. Wish i took better pics but we were starving and it hit the spot. Hunan will always be our go to for Chinese food. read more

You walk in and the ambiance is very clean, warm and welcoming. Sometimes someone is sitting a the bar...but sometimes not. But on today, you should know that it is one of those days where it's wayyyy too hot to be outside but wayyy to nice to be in the house. So this is where we decided to come for lunch/dinner.... to Hunan's Restaurant on Wabash Avenue in Springfield, Illinois. When we came in it was cool and relaxing from the aummer sun. We sat near the window for natural light (which is a limited space here) and ordered some of our favorites...drinks-water, Asian Pear Martini and a Bloody Mary; for food-a Hunan plate and bowl...oh and the egg rolls as appetizers. FYI-You should all know, my other half says you should come in and get the Bloody Mary even if you don't want any food because the Bloody Mary is that good. "They are the bomb." I have to add, that the food is cooked to order so, it is piping hot and on a warm day like today we had to have ice water because the food was as sooo hot we got warm quickly. But, the hot food makes cold water even more refreshing. Additionally, the portion sizes are favorable so we always walk out with to go boxes. So come on in and get you some good piping hot ethnic food and drinks that make you soar for a price that will make you smile and feel like you just did a good thing. I swear to it. Another customer says grab the Sesame Chicken, it's the best,...guess we'll have to try that next time. This is absolutely one of our favorite places. You won't regret it. read more

This is by far my favorite place to get sushi! It is so good and always so fresh. The owners are fantastic and always so friendly. When my kid was 3 they made "trainer" chopsticks for him, and now he is 15 and they still remember him and ask about him! I am not a huge fan of Americanized Chinese food but I will say my wife and I had a very pleasant experience here in mid December. She loved her sushi (and some of my potstickers) which is always a good sign as Asian cuisine is in her top three! The fried rice was outstanding, although I would ask for no mushrooms next time (they went a tad heavy on the shrooms). I was not that hungry so it was more of a try a few bites of everything night...was pleased all the way around. The service was pretty much what I have come to expect for Midwestern Chinese; sometimes hard to understand, not overly friendly but at least approachable. The restaurant and ambiance itself isn't anything special, again, very much your standard Chinese dressings, but the food was good enough for me to give it the four stars! read more

My go to sushi place as of lately. So many options!! I haven't had a bad experience here since they moved from their last location. They have great lunch specials, I always feel like I get so much delicious food for the price! They also have great cocktail and beer options. I like this place! The bar is lacking because there is no demand to support the hiring of a bar tender. You can't go wrong with bottled beer or straight spirits though. I'm partial to the Moo-Shu pork. There is enough there for two people! You can keep the wraps/tortillas and use them to make your own egg burrito in the morning. The new place is so much nicer than the original. This is the second time I have been here I a week and a half. The egg rolls are the best I have ever had!! Normally don't like egg rolls. Last time I had the combo ramen and it was good. Husband said the sushi was good. He got spicy tuna not a fan. Shrimp or crab is my sushi choice. We decided to share a Cajun bag shrimp and crab. I've been here numerous times before and loved it every time. Of course, I only come here for sushi, so I can't say much about the menu items. The lunch ($12.99) and dinner ($14.99) all you can eat sushi specials are to die for. The only trick is that for each piece (not entire roll) of sushi you don't finish, is an additional dollar =) but that's ok because my friends and I always clean our plates. Only thing I was confused about was my salad I got at my last visit....lots of dressing on it for whatever reason. Other than that I've never had any issues with this place in the past year I've been going. Servers are always around to fill waters and to ask if there's anyhting additional you need. This was our first time at Hunan. We were seated and got our drinks promptly. The server took our order and our appetizers and salad that came with entree. Everything was hot and tasted fresh. Strange little place at first, the entrance was a little cramped and very warm. Went inside to see a small sushi bar and a tightly spaced room. We ordered our drinks, the meal for 4, a California roll and American roll. Appitizers came and while the egg rolls were good, the crab rangoon was exceptional. Next came the egg drop soup, again good. Our entrées were beef hot plate, sweet/sour shrimp, mongolian beef and orange chicken, which we swapped out for the cashew chicken, that usually comes with the deal, for $1 extra. All of the entrées were good, but the mongolian beef was amazing. Great semi-sweet flavor with tons of fragrant scallions. Overall a great experiance. Very nice staff, with the exception of the skinny legged waitress who seemed to be a direct descendent of chairman Mao. read more

The server was nice but sadly the food was the worst I've ever had in a restaurant. Besides the sweet and sour soup. My son ordered all u can eat sushi and couldn't eat his first roll. I believe the cream cheese was generic and gave it an awful taste. I ordered the Kung pao chicken and it was horrible. I could not eat but a few bites. It was like small over fried dried out chunks of chicken w peppers and nuts sautés in oil. No flavor. No sauce just oil. I'm not one to complain and should've said something to staff. It was an overpriced lunch and hopefully they can get a new chef. Before it's too late. Was my first time in the new restaurants location and loved the ambiance and was excited to have a nice Chinese restaurant to return to. I've been here several times now and good lord, this place is a mixed bag. The sushi isn't my favorite, but it's decently cheap so I've always kept coming back. Don't get the individual sushi pieces or even the rolls that depend on the FISH to shine -- stick with the dressed up rolls, the ones with tempura batter and lots of sauce. And bring a big group. My best experiences here have been with 5+ people, not just for obvious "you get to try more stuff" reasons, but also, most importantly, the SERVICE. When I come here in big groups, the service is usually decent to good. Courteous, helpful servers, fast service, etc. When I DON'T come here with big groups I feel like I'm being treated like an inconvenience. The first time I came without a large group, just with me and two other people, I asked if the check could be split and the server gave me a rather venomous look and stated they "did not do that" there. Which is silly because they certainly have had no problem doing so with large groups. I ended up paying for both of my friends and collecting cash from them later -- kind of annoying. The second time I came without a large group, they didn't give us our own individual plates for all you can eat sushi. I thought this was odd and asked the server, after our first round of rolls came out, if we could please get plates. He responded by giving me an incredulous look and saying nothing at all, just staring at me. I repeated my question, and he snapped back at me "You can just get your own at the buffet." I mean, yes, of course we could, but that didn't even cross our minds because we hadn't ordered anything to do with the buffet. We were all getting all you can eat sushi. Normally they bring out plates and soy sauce containers for everyone so you aren't dripping and dropping crap all over the table? I don't know, it was really just bizarre and sort of insulting. What really took the cake, though, was after this happened, we watched the server go back to the bar, duck his head in, say something to the chefs while pointing at our table, and then he disappeared and did not bring our plates until after the next round of sushi was done. From then on, when he brought ANYTHING to us, he acted very sullen, dropped the plates on the table in an obviously careless and dismissive way, did not say a SINGLE word to us, even when we were trying to lessen the awkward atmosphere by thanking him, and I am NOT kidding you -- every single time he finished bringing us another plate of food, he would march directly back to the food preparation area, POINT AT OUR TABLE, and whisper about us. I truly don't think we were rude. We just wanted plates because we were sort of making a mess without them. We continued to thank him for his service and he continued to act as though we were the world's biggest burden. This was the final straw, I think. The sushi here isn't good enough to put up with that kind of nonsense. If you want good sushi in Springfield, try Happy Sushi. It's more expensive, but much better quality, and the gentleman who runs the place is wonderful, as is all of his staff. read more

First time here since the move. Our service was FANTASTIC. I rarely write reviews, but they have earned this. The new location is beautiful. We were seated immediately and our food was out within 10 minutes of sitting down. The food was also amazing! I had the sushi with sesame chicken and crab rangoon. (By the way, Hunans sushi definitely beats Osaka any day). I cannot wait to come back here! VERY satisfied. This was without a doubt, the BEST experience I have ever had at a restaurant. Hands down the best sushi i've had in a long time. My group came on a Friday night. We were immediately greeted and seated. They have the sushi ordering menu on the table to pick your own sushi rolls. I ordered 3 rolls. Here is the best part....are you ready??? Its all you can eat sushi!!!! They will keep bringing you sushi for the price of $19.99. This isn't a bad price seeing that some of the rolls are $10 a piece. The catch is (well what they state on the menu) for every piece of sushi that you leave on your plate, you have to pay $1. I know my sushi limit so I never have anything left. Its a great option if you want to try a few different rolls. They are really good sized rolls and all of the ones I tried were amazing, I heard it can get packed in there so try to go early. Service was pretty good and the rolls came out pretty fast. Its definitely a place you would want to check out if you go to Springfield IL. read more

Finally tried Hunan after hearing so much about it. I am a sushi fiend so I am surprised it took me this long to get here. I wasnt let down. First, an all-you-can-eat sushi place is both music to my ears and also dangerous for the place that runs it. My dining companion and I went in to do damage and at $16... $16!!!! it is a steal. I dont think anyone expects the most high-quality sushi at this type of place, but I was surprisingly pleased. The fish was probably about a 7 on a 10-scale, though some of the nigiri yellowtail pieces were a bit dry on the edges. There were lots of rolls that were creative and very good. Over all I was really happy with the experience here. The ambiance is nice with a choice of sitting at a table, booth or the sushi bar and the people are very friendly and helpful. This experience cannot be overstated. The service was exemplary and the food delectable. They were fairly busy, but that didn't stop the service from being quick and personal. I had the egg roll and vegetable ramen and Oh. My. God. The springy, flavor-packed noodles were sublime with the crunchy, flavorful vegetables. And don't even get me started on the egg roll. It was crispy, hot but not too hot, and had an impressive egg roll taste. It was served on the prettiest plate with a divider that had a perfect amount of not too sweet, mouthwatering sauce. I ended up pulling into Hunan chinese to determine alternatives and well they were open and I was hungry.. This is ayce sushi for 16.95! Don't know how they do it! Very fresh fish must have high turnover of inventory. The spicy girl, bubba gump and Texas scorpions are must tries. Only negatives, they do use long grain rice (IE chinese rice) and pieces are kinda small (but it is all you can eat?). Don't know that I would try exotic fish? What I had was excellent! I was not impressed. It was $17.99 for all you can eat sushi and I saw pretty good reviews, so I went for it. There weren't many people there, which is never a good sign when it comes to raw fish. Tried it for the first time today - pretty tasty. I got it delivered and ordered a spicy tuna roll, bagel roll, eel roll, and rainbow roll. The rice could've been a bit more seasoned, but the fish tasted fresh and overall it was good. However, prices are a bit steep. $8 for a California roll is a bit excessive. I think the AYCE deal would be best for those wanting to try a variety of rolls like I did. It's funny. This place has evolved since I use to live in Springfield. Right now it's a hybrid of both Chinese food and sushi. When I knew it well and would visit frequently, this place had the best Chinese food I've ever had. Many since have fallen short and a few have come close. However, I'm yet to try a place that I can definivitely say is better than this place was. Mr. Lau did the cooking back then, but has since moved on. Now, I find myself visiting for their sushi selection. They have all you can eat sushi specials. I believe it's $13 for lunch and $15 for dinner.
