Love this place. Always consistent, always quick! The garlic chicken and kung pao chicken are our go to dishes.

I don't know why the reviews are so bad. We ordered the general tso chicken and beef fried rice. The food was ready in 10 minutes the chicken was so hot and had great texture large pieces that weren't over cooked. The fried rice was huge and we did add a bit of samba Halek?.... Lol i don't know how to spell that. All to say it was quick fresh and larger portions. We will eat here more often! So glad having something close by and yummy! read more

This place was a short dash (across busy intersection with no crosswalks or sidewalks) from our place. Very plain, with a few tables. Mostly takeout. We ordered steamed dumplings and mu shu pork. A surprise. Both were very good. The pancakes were very thin though, so the assembly didn't hold together very well. Delicious. Plasticware, chopsticks, styrofoam. But never mind that. Except for the pancakes, what we ordered would be considered fine in an upscale restaurant. read more

It's Chinese food and it's fast. Out of 4 or 5 Chinese restaurants in area the quality of China express is the lowest, but I get it when I'm on the south side of Springfield and don't feel like driving. Be careful prices on most items are incredibly high. read more

While staying in Springfield last week I had a hankerin' for some Chinese food, and this place was the closest to my hotel and had decent reviews. I don't know if the people who left those reviews have just never had good chinese food or what. I got the steamed dumplings and general tso's chicken. It was unpleasant. The dumplings were soggy, and fell apart when picked up. There was standing water in the Styrofoam container they came in. I understand condensation, but this was ridiculous. They lacked any flavor. The general tso's chicken tasted like deep fried chicken nuggets that has a slightly sweet, but mainly and overly salty sauce on it. It was bad. It wasn't spicy at all and I kept drinking water to combat the saltiness of the food. Save your money. Find elsewhere if you want Chinese. read more

Not a very good choice. Food is highly average and the place just seems unsanitary. I do like the crab Rangoon which is the only reason I gave it 2 stars. Palatable in a pinch but def not a regular destination. read more

I enjoy Chinese food, and I have tried probably half of the Asian restaurants in Springfield. The China Express on Toronto Road is clearly one of the better ones, and it is arguably the best of the "fast food" style Chinese restaurants. The dishes are for the most part the standard basic Chinese food offerings you could get at most inexpensive Chinese restaurants, but I think China Express somehow makes their food taste a little better. Probably their style of seasoning and cooking agrees more with my taste. I especially recommend their egg rolls (vegetarian). Their Mu-Shu dishes are also exceptionally good. This restaurant is especially good for students, staff, and faculty at the nearby Lincoln Land Community College and the University of Illinois. read more

Living in the Chicago area my whole life, I have always hated Chinese food. Going to college in Springfield however, I tried their beef and broccoli and fell in love. Though the prices are a bit high (8.50 for a large), saving up is worth it! Though the service is not wonderful (every response is "okay ten minute" after ordering), the food makes up for everything about this place. Mon-Thurs. 10:30-9:30 Fri-Sat. 10:30-10:00 Sunday: 12-9:30 Living in a town that basically shuts down at 5pm, these hours are great for some good Chinese food! read more

Stopped here while driving through town for dinner, and was pleasantly surprised. after reading reviews I was nervous, but if you go in not expecting a 5 star bistro-quality experience, it does the job fine. I completely agree with Elisabeth. China Express is a great thing to have semi-close to the campus and its never been a bad choice. A lot of ethnic restaurants in Springfield are sketchy but China Express has never fell below my standards. The prices aren't the greatest but I've seen much worse for less food. The lunch specials are a great deal, its about 1/3 less than menu price and you get a ton of extras, weekdays only. The food has always been good. There's enough in a dinner combination (dish, friend rice and egg roll for $8.10 after tax) for two moderately sized meals. The service isn't the best, the woman was on the phone while I walked in, ordered, paid, and gave me my food. But, like the other review said, the food makes up for it. From what I can tell, the food is made to order. The menu, like and Chinese takeout, is enormous with options for everyone. If they delivered to campus and put menus out they'd make a killing. read more

I'm not one to be picky about Chinese food, but I really don't like theirs. I usually go to a different place closer to my side of town, but I stopped here out of convenience since my boyfriend lives down the road. I don't think I'll be coming back. The crab Rangoon that I got was dry, not creamy, and a weird flavor. And the chicken lo mein tasted like it was straight soy sauce, just not a good flavor either. But I ate most of it only because I was really hungry. read more

If you go at lunchtime, make sure you specifiy that you want the "lunch" menu item. Have been there several other lunch times and always got the value meal without having to specify....d'uh, it's lunch time! This week I didn't say anything different and I got the full order which was twice as expensive. I was not happy but the lady started arguing with me that I said "full order" which I most definitely did NOT. So just be careful. It's not bad food for a quick run out at lunch and their crab ragoon is very good. But I do not like being argued with.... read more

I used to like the crab Rangoon here so much that every time I drove from north to south and back, I purposefully swang by this place for their crab Rangoon. It has been a few years and it apparently has a different owner, a short and chubby lady in her mid 50's. She was not happy as soon as my son and I walked in. I asked about their crab Rangoon as their owner has changed. The lady kept asking me to order from the menu. I said I wanted to see what it looks like now ( as some Chinese restaurants have really small ones). She said I couldn't look. So I sized it with my hand: about this big? Then she said you can look. So she walked to the fridge and pinched one from the fridge with a pincher, swang it in the air and then put it back, before I even saw it. Then she walked to me and told me to order them from the menu. I was standing there; 5:20 pm, no other customers at all which cannot be a good sign. I decided not to order anything as I don't trust what they put and will put in my food with a hostile attitude like this. Geez. read more

My dad I ordered this food for carry out probably about a year or so ago. And my Dad and I have ate plenty of chinese food to know what it is supposed to taste like. This food was bad. My dad refused to eat anymore of his food and demanded a refund. I continued to eat until I thought so also. We called the restraunt and found out that they had microwaved our meals. First of all you're not in China Town Chicago! And yes I would like to see more traditional dishes, but growing up eating real Chinese food it is not that terrible. More yet who do you think you are to negate the food when you could have walked across the street to McDonalds and got some chicken nuggets. read more
