Chicken wings, egg rolls, fried rice, Hunan Beef, and General Tao's. Wings and egg rolls were pretty good. Fried rice was more like microwave in a packet rice, beef was odd flavored and not like any Hunan Beef we've ever had. Tao's was slightly better. read more

A complete letdown from start to finish and here is why. So, when I review take-out/Americanized Chinese restaurants I break everything down into three categories; fresh, price, reheated. If you get great food right out of the gate then price does not matter as much and 9 out of 10 times is just as enjoyable when reheated. If you get average food from jump street but the price is perfect for you then maybe 50/50 on the reheat. If you get horrible food on the front end with an over inflated price then 9 out of 10 times you won't even finish your leftovers (and this was what my wife and I ran into several weeks ago ordering take-out). The food was bland, over salted, some of it came at the proper cooked temperature and other parts didn't. The visuals alone were not appealing; she is a huge Chinese fan so when she goes sour on a place almost no chance of me enjoying my meal. We've eaten at China Star since they opened. Lately, the food has been greasy, especially their egg rolls. You can squeeze the grease out of them. This past weekend, (3-9-24) we ate at China Star again. The sweet and sour pork we ordered was aweful. The pork had no pork inside, they tried to pass off fried dough balls as pork. I got General Tso's for my Mom, husband and myself yesterday. the flavor of the whole dish including fried rice is different. New cook? I don't know what but we did not like the flavor of the dish. Best Chinese in town! Always order the cheese wontons, they are like golden little cream cheese gems in mouth. Regular menu items I order are szechuan chicken, roasted pork egg foo young combo, hot & sour soup and egg rolls. This our favorite Chinese place in Springfield and we usually try to hit it up once a week. The ingredients are very fresh and everything is made to order so don't come looking for a buffet. We saw them chopping up whole chickens one day and were convinced at how fresh everything is. This is a great little place. It seems like the average dive-type Chinese greasy spoon. It's not fancy but the food is good. I ordered a small Chicken Lo-mein which was plenty for a good lunch and it cost less than $5. I got in and out with my food in maybe 5 minutes or so and that was at quarter 'till 1 on a Wednesday. I don't eat tons of Chinese food, but this is among the best I've had and the lady at the counter was great. I'm going back for sure. Heck, I may not even be able to wait that long! My two friends and I went here when we were on a road trip. Me and my friend both got the orange chicken lunch and the chicken was more breading than actually chicken. The fried rice was good. My other friend got the huan beef with won ton soup. The beef was o.k., but the won ton soup was good. We are from Chicago, so we know good Chinese when we eat it and this place was alright. Five Stars for using great chicken in the dishes, white meat chicken not the greasy and cheap dark meat. We order from here once a week in the winter months, food and service are very good. Call ahead and pick up or order online and let them know when you want to pick up. My favorites are: chicken pad Thai; pork fried rice (not greasy!), chicken curry, beef chop suey, egg foo young, Mongolian beef, chicken and broccoli. Yesterday I got a takeout lunch order of mixed vegetables (we live 20 miles from the restaurant) with tofu with lo mein noodles. The tofu was hardly cooked and the only vegetables that were eatable were the snap peas and broccoli. The lo mein noodles were good though-so I ate just the noodles, peas, and broccoli-I threw out the rest. I called today to see if they would make things right and they told me the only thing that they could do was if I brought the food back and they could refund me. Sorry, but to drive 20 miles to get a refund is not sufficient customer service for me. We have ordered from China Star MULTIPLE times and NEVER had this happen-but now I may have to find another Chinese restaurant to frequent. read more

This place just isn't the same anymore. All the recipes seem to be bland. They used to be packed with flavor but now they taste watered down. They stopped selling the homemade fried dumplings and began serving the same fried dumplings you can buy at Walmart which is a mistake.
