The Szechuan chicken was the same boiled meat thrown in a bowl with raw broccoli and mushrooms. It wasn't even cooked just the sauce thrown on the container with it. The egg rolls were just bland cabbage no other vegetables, no flavor no chicken was to be seen. We threw the whole meal away. Sunny China House is solidly average. Nothing we had stood out as impressively good or bad, with one small exception: the noodles in the lo mein had a very pleasant chew. We ordered chicken and pork fried rice, pork lo mein, crab rangoon, and chicken egg rolls. The appetizers weren't flavorful, but they also weren't greasy. The fried rice wasn't overly salty, but it also was bland. The stand-out was the pork lo mein, which is what the server recommended. The pork had more complex spicing than anything else, in addition to the noodles having good texture. A few side notes: The portion sizes were enormous, but the flip side of that is that the prices are a bit higher than at your average Chinese restaurant. It also is clearly primarily a takeout restaurant, though there are a few tables. Final assessment, I'd eat here again if someone else suggested it or it was extra convenient for some reason, but I'd be unlikely to choose it on my own. read more

We love this place. It is family owned, and they do a great job. No, they aren't chatty (reference to a review about their disposition) but if you do go enough you realize they are focused, care about their food, care about their business, and quality. We are big Chinese food consumers, have moved many times, and one of the hardest things to find is a good Chinese food restaurant. The quality of the meat has always been very good. The vegetables don't get over cooked. The meat to vegetable ratio has always been very good. Just wish they did shrimp/pork egg rolls- that's the only thing suggestion I can think of. I eat here all of the time and really love it. Service is fast and friendly and the restaurant and bathrooms are always clean. I generally get the Kung Pao chicken special or some other chicken stir fry dish. I did order a breaded chicken dish once and didn't like it but those dishes aren't good anywhere. I love both the quality of food and service that I receive at Sunny China House. There are two Chinese restaurants in my town but I prefer to drive to Springfield and dine at Sunny China House because the food is so delicious. I've never had a bad meal and the family who own this business have always been kind and respectful when taking my order or serving me my food. So I have no idea what the other reviewers are complaining about. It has been my experience when people are complaining about rude service, they themselves are extremely RUDE/MEAN to the service people of that establishment. We are vegan and have few options in Springfield. This place was a solid choice on our first visit. We have lived in bigger cities such as L.A., Berlin, and Detroit, so by comparison we give this place 4 stars. A general trend that we have found is that restaurants here go very light on spices-this place is no exception. Husband ordered General Tao's steamed Tofu mild. I ordered Ma Po steamed Tofu medium. If you think Siracha is spicy then Medium may be spicy for you, but if (like me) you think Siracha has the spiciness of ketchup, then go for extra hot. The veges in the dish had some onions and celery (which I consider flavorings and filler) so I would have liked to see less of that and more broccoli, carrots, zucchini, etc. The mushrooms were more of a button type mushroom and not any special asian type of mushroom (likely difficult to find here). It was not greasy which is refreshing in a small town eatery. I honestly think the owners are trying to cater to what kind of food people here are accustomed to eating. We will definitely go here again, and hoping that as we get to know the owners, that we can eat something more authentic. The owners were very nice and welcoming. Bottom line: if you have eaten at award-winnning asian restaurants in San Francisco like I have, you will find this a bit bland and Americanized, but it rises above most midwestern versions of asian food. read more

It was a little pricey for not so flavorful food, but not greasy or overly soy sauced, and the meat in the dishes was nicely cooked. They recommended their pork Lo mein. The noodles were delicious, beautifully textured. We also ordered pork and chicken fried rice (very plain and bland), chicken egg rolls (average, but again well cooked), and the crab Rangoon, which we aren't convinced had crab in it. I will say this: 2 large orders and the appetizers could have fed 4. The boxes were like the Mary Poppins bag of Chinese food! Overall, a place I won't frequent, but would go back to if suggested. Four stars for Springfield and not so much for what was right, but more for what wasn't wrong. For starters the food was not at all greasy which is rare for Chinese takeout these days. They use 100% vegetable oil that is fresh so you had no separation of the sauce with a ring of grease and no residual effects like the sweats while you are eating it; also, no nasty after taste. The dumplings were flavorful and fresh and the moo shu pork was honest. The steamed shrimp in vegetables was as advertised with pungent, large sized and plentiful shrimp. The fried rice was not greasy but was the lone disappointment. It was very simple and more on in the gold yellow family than true Chinese fried rice which is brown. This place is safe and trustworthy in an area where good Chinese food is completely lacking read more

WOW, AWFUL Chinese food. !!!!!!! the Orange Chicken was GOOEY. Could not taste the difference between the meat and the BREADING ??. Mushy and Nasty. My spouse had General Tso . I would not let the General's dog eat it. They tried to hid the ickyness with spice but NOOOO !! Now the Rice was OK Crab Rangoons ? Bit into them and the crab leaked out like liquid.
