So, getting a brownie in a donut shop - bad move, huh? I know, I know, but I went for it anyway. That thing was a big mess of fat, sugar, and chocolate; exactly what I wanted, but in the wrong way - it had this sickening plasticky taste, like those margarine abominations that live for years on the shelf of a convenience store, in the happy white wrappers. It sounds from other reviews that the doughnuts here aren't consistent, but I've been coming on random rare occasions for a few years, and every time I've been, they're always great, so I guess I'm lucky. I just now ate part of a glazed donut and part of a cake doughnut, and they were both yummy. In fact, this Happy Donuts seems to be the only place for miles around that can make cake doughnuts the way they were when I was a kid. The display case was also well-stocked with a variety of flavors, even though it was 5 pm; lots of other doughnut places in the East Bay seem to have empty shelves later in the day. The ambiance here isn't anything to get excited about, but most people don't plan to spend a lot of time hanging out in a doughnut shop. Got 3 donuts today-1 jelly, 1 raised sugar and a plain old fashioned for wife and I. They were fairly fresh but something about them was bothering us. We then realized we were smelling, of all things, rosemary spice. Really weird, once we recognized the spice we continued to eat them, but later I called that shop and asked why the rosemary? They denied it, but it was very obvious. They then hung up rudely. Maybe they were handling rosemary for something else and it got in the batter, but I was really offended at their rudeness. Happy donuts indeed. Oooh, that little yellow cakey one with the chocolate frosting and coconut on top almost made me jizz in my pants. The buttermilk is dinosaur-sized with a distinct pineapple flavor. I mostly liked it. The plain crumby and chocolate crumby are good, but nothing compared to the ones at Rolling Pin (http://www.yelp.com/biz/rolling-pin-donuts-san-bruno) by SFO. The guy who works here is really concerned with making sure he gets you the right donut. He does this thing where he repeats everything you say back to you reaaallllyyy slooowwwly and then shows you the donut you asked for and asks again if this is the one you want. Indulge him. At least he gets shit right. Get lots of donuts so that you can share with the massive posse of homeless dudes in the parking lot. I was about to get on the freeway to go to SF and was feeling draggy even though I had super foods and a protein drink before leaving the house. The red light stopped me across the street from this place and my draggy brain said "Hey, let's stop for Donuts" and so I did. One chocolate glazed and one large cup of coffee - both really good and the free holes were a sweet surprise. The Asian ladies running things were nice too in that no-nonsense way that I really really love. Yes the surroundings are a little bleak yet the donuts and the ladies are bringing some warmth to that corner. Donuts are a once in a while thing for me but I could see how my route to the freeway will be influenced by that craving. read more

They're open late at night on Fridays and Saturdays when shows are playing at Gilman. You can literally go here at 11 o'clock (or whenever) and get tasty donuts. This is the only context in which I've had Happy Donuts, so I've never had their donuts reasonably fresh, so I'm not fully qualified to comment on the quality of the donuts. That said, I feel that the donuts are OK, but the people who own this place are really nice and personable, so they get an extra star for this reason. read more

Best donut shop ever. I randomly discovered this place while my wife was shopping at the Tokyo Fish Market on the same block. The old-fashioned donuts are fried and crispy the way they should be. These days a lot of donuts are not so much donuts but rather whole wheat bread in the shape of a donut with frosting on top. These are delicious old school donuts. They are not healthy for you, but they taste great. Especially if you go in the afternoon, they always give you some extra stuff for free, I guess because they know they are just going to throw it away anyways. They never give you an extra donut of the type that you order, though. The free donut is always something different. I guess they figured that you have already signaled to them that for the donut types which you ordered you are willing to pay so they figure it would not make any sense to give you one of those donut types for free. The location isn't great. From San Pablo you have to turn down Gilman and walk for about half a block and then cross a dirty grimy parking lot but trust me, it is worth it. Our absolute favorite donut shop. For a long time we were around the corner, and were very sad to move further away. Even though there are shops closer to us now, we keep coming back, because of how good the donuts. Nancy is usually there when we stop by, and she is very friendly, particularly to our son who has come here since he was in his mother's belly. Can't say much about the donuts as I was only a phone customer. The lady who answered, obviously Asian (my wife is Thai so I'm not being racist), was very rude to me. I asked her how big their yeast raised donuts were and she actually hung up on me. Because of her attitude I will never ever visit or refer this place. Super friendly and nice staff! We came in after getting a beer at Pyramid for a donut, I hadn't had a donut in years! I was shocked they had devils food chocolate donuts WITH COCONUT! Oh god it was delicious! My partner just had the glazed, how boring but delightfully yummy! I love this place. I hadn't read the yelp reviews and just wandered in willing to risk trying their donuts and now I've already been a repeat customer. They really did give me free donut holes and the little surprises in my bag tickled me silly. Happy Donuts, it works! I always get the buttermilk bar and it's consistent and doesn't disappoint. Great flavor. I'll miss them when I go back to southern Cali. I would give them 5 stars except I read that sometimes Yelp removes 1 and 5 star ratings as some sort of balancing average, hence the 4 stars to try to keep this visible in the reviews/ratings. Having moved here from NY, it was pretty disappointing to go from a Dunkin Donuts every few blocks, along with a couple Krispy Kreme and Tim Hortons scattered around the city, to basically zero donut options here in Berkeley. Until we stopped by Happy Donuts this weekend. This little place is great! The donuts were light, tasty and fresh. Plus, the guy working the counter was nice and threw in a fifth donut for free. Went in Thursday morning and was told they couldn't have that quantity ready by my desired time, 7:00. They bumped it to 8:00. Arrived at 8:00, they handed me 12 dozen doughnut holes. Big Fail. I have not tried all the donuts made at this little gem, but the ones I have tried (glaze, plain, chocolate covered) are fantastic. One that they make is their chocolate cake donut which is just out of this world it so good. You can either get it topped with almond bits or just plain chocolate.
