My friend likes this place, but I don't hold my expectations of my friend too high. The times I've been here, the tables were dirty, and we were seated anyway. When we asked the waitress if it could be cleaned twice they gave us an attitude. This last time, the waitress was socializing with other workers while 6 tables were waiting to place our order. When she did come, she took all six tables' orders one after another. So the first person in was the last person served. Poor methods and skills. The table next to ours was 2 men laughing at that waitress who had her green pants up her rear end. Not kidding I was going to take a picture but I felt bad for her and I did not. You can look attractive without trying to show your camel and your piggy rear end. I'm sorry. The food was not bad and I will most likely be back if I have to. As a local, happy diner is one of my go to breakfast spots! The service is always very welcoming and friendly, it feels like visiting a family members house. As soon as you sit down you're offered water or a nice smoooth cup of diner coffee. The menu is extensiveeee there is something for everyone! From sweet, to healthy, and even Mexican dishes like menudo and chilaquiles! But my go-to is the ILWU breakfast (the one pictured). I gave this place a few tries, but unfortunately I will not be returning because of the hygiene practices I observed. The employee working the register would touch the register screen and then handle food and place items like bread into the toaster without washing her hands or using gloves. I observed this same person sniffling one day when she was sick and touching her nose then touching the register and handling the toast with bare hands. I also observed the person preparing the food handling bacon and other food with bare hands while wearing a ring which was touching the bacon. What concerned me most was seeing employees go from touching the register and other surfaces directly to handling food. I did not observe consistent handwashing or glove use between these tasks. The food itself may be fine, but these sanitation practices made me uncomfortable enough that I will not return. Was working nearby, and found this place. It reminded me of restaurants and diners how they used to be. I had the bacon cheeseburger, no bun, lettuce wrap. And also sweet potato fries. Both were very delicious. They did a great job with the lettuce wrap. All of the ingredients were fresh, and it was a lot to eat. The service was spot on and quick. There were a few elderly regulars in here, and the way the staff were treating them was like family. Very refreshing to see. This is a newer location of what seems to be the "Happy Diner chain" but it's really an easy spot to get breakfast. The interior as it seems with the HD style is pretty basic but not uncomfortable. With about 75% capacity the basic noise from service and conversation gets pretty loud towards the back so that cross table conversation is a bit difficult. The service staff seemed nice and friendly enough. They also were pretty prompt and attentive. The food was pretty basic diner stuff. Not badly prepared but a bit heavy/ maybe greasy but not bad at all. All said, this is not a place I'd seek out if it's my first time in the area; however, if you live in the area it's not a bad choice to meet a local for a casual meal and catch up. read more

REALLY POOR service. After finding seats a busman finally brought menus. There are TWO waitresses for just a few tables, but the waitresses were SO BUSY just "chatting away" with each other ~ getting their attention was a chore! They were like two magnets, compelled. After waiting for some time I began waving my palm in their direction to get our orders placed, but that didn't work. I finally resorted to waving a "MENU" to get their attention! The cook saw it too and said 'something' to the ladies(?) During our meal it was the busman who came to our rescue again bringing coffee refills to all customers ready! Apparently our waitresses could not be bothered. Neighbors, this was my third visit to Happy Diner #2 and received the same poor service two out of three times... I usually get the Cheeseburger special (Cheeseburger, soup or salad, fries or onion rings, and a drink. It was $18.95 I noticed that if you order the items separately, the total comes out less, so I mentioned it to the waitress. She said she would tell the owner. That said, there was trash on the floor, tables weren't wiped down...maybe these are just the jitters that come with a new restaurant! The staff also aren't well-briefed on the menu; I asked for details on a dish, and my waitress seemed bothered when i asked her to check in with her kitchen for the info that i needed. My food was served at room temperature - also not a fun time! Considering the price premium ($3-5+ per entree/item) that Happy Diner charges over other businesses/cafes (Fantastic Cafe, etc) in the area, you should expect a step up in service/quality. So far, this latest outpost of Happy Diner appears to offer neither. Needless to say, I am a bit disappointed - and as of right now, I won't be back. read more

I experienced the worst meal I've had in ages at this diner. I went with a group to Happy Diner for dinner and ordered the Teriyaki Tri-Tip after the waitress recommended it. When it came, it was almost inedible. First, I don't believe it was tri-tip and my partner agreed. It was tough and tasteless and was not marinated in teriyaki as advertised. It was cooked in very sweet, syrupy teriyaki sauce and served with thick, boardy asparagus and garlic mashed potatoes. I don't know how you mess up garlic mashed potatoes, but these were starchy and tasteless and just seemed to be reheated, old mashed potatoes (almost no garlic, or buttery taste). I wish I had sent the whole thing back, but I was invited out by others and I didn't want the host to feel embarrassed. Others at the table who ordered breakfast egg dishes for dinner were satisfied, but those who ordered regular plate dinners said they were "meh". I tasted the pork bar-b-q sandwich and it had very little meat and was very underwhelming. This was my first time visiting, and it will be my last.
