Attitude started when I ended and asked to use the restroom. Then I returned to order my food and the lady was so impatient. The menu options are needlessly restrictive. Why do we have to purchase a whole tray of shrimp with mixed vegetables and rice. Why isn't this available as a small box? The menus in the restaurant also have no pictures and no detail descriptions, so it's hard to conceptualize exactly what you're ordering and what it'll look like. I ended up settling on the barbecue pork fried rice and was dissatisfied with the dish. You could argue it was fried rice sprinkled with bits of barbeque pork. Recently, I ended up at Hao's Kitchen, because the taco truck I'd driven all the way to Planada for was unexpectedly closed. After looking through the photos and scouring reviews from some of my other favorite Elites, I decided to order the Orange Chicken lunch combo. For $12.99, it came with a huge serving of chicken chow mein, and smaller servings of pork fried rice and fresh fried orange chicken doused in sauce. I was told to wait about ten to fifteen minutes, but it seemed to come out much faster than that. Although I was distracted by my phone, I don't think I waited longer than eight minutes. The chicken was so hot and fresh that I had to wait several minutes before I could actually eat it. It was definitely cooked well, and all the way through. The sauce was tangy and amazing, and tasted homemade. It reminded me of some of the places my mom took me to in LA when I was little. I loved the pork fried rice, although it was a little greasy. I loved the noodles, which were even greasier, a little less. I didn't love the flavor of the noodles as much as the rest of the plate. They were kind of on the bland, greasy side. The cashier had asked me if I wanted any sauce, and, since I don't order Chinese food very often, I couldn't think of any sauces. Later, I wished I had asked for a little soy sauce (for the rice) and sweet and sour sauce (also for the rice, and for the noodles). For the price, the combo is a pretty good deal. A certain Chinese fast food chain charges significantly more for the same amount of food, ounce per ounce. If I had a choice, I would have rather had more rice and less noodles. I also wished there was an option for a smaller order of cream cheese wontons-- the only option was 8 pieces for $9. Overall, I thought this place was pretty good, and am glad I stopped by to try it out. read more

Excellent taste and decent portions. We had the shrimp and vegetables bowl and orange chicken. Unfortunately, this is a less than ideal location. My child did not feel comfortable going through the parking lot, but it's nice to have any non-fast food restaurant close to home. Ordering and layout seemed a little odd but it seemed that the bulk of their business was for takeout. Ordering from the counter, a table between the customer and the cashier, food served in styrofoam, storage being a temporary divider, etc. all made one feel like they were unaccustomed to indoor dining. I moved from Los Angeles to Merced, my husband and I missed the variety of Asian cuisine food. We googled this place and it was the closest thing to Chinese fast food. We order and of course Chinese food at Merced is a bit more expensive than L.A. as I order the plate I ordered, the cashier took our debit card and gave us the receipt. I notice later that she helps the kitchen as well, because there weren't many customers. Later on, she touches my rice and other orders of rice with her hand to keep the perfect "ball" form I guess. I couldn't believe it. I told my husband and he said "no way" but then he sees her later touching some other persons rice with her hand...... like why? You're touching money, debit cards, the phone, and not washing your hands...... I've never seen anything like this. I don't know, you guys be the judge this time. We were in Merced on Saturday and we were looking for a place to have lunch near Golden Valley High School when this place came up in Yelp and not too far from the school. Not sure what made this place a 4-star but I wasn't impressed with my beef and fried rice. I had the rice bowl w/ sauce. The fried rice was dry and tasteless. The beef was okay. There was vegetables that came with the serving but I didn't bother. Perhaps I should've ordered something different but it satisfied my hunger at the moment. This is a Chinese restaurant that you place an order at the counter and you get your food when it's ready. No wait service. The dining area is not very big but was kept clean. We dined in but some customers have come for pick up or ordered food to go. The meal prices were decent and even on the cheap side, definitely affordable. I was so excited to try this place out because of the 4 stars but honestly was not impressed at all. The customer service was okay(nothing to complain). The food on the other hand was "eh" not something I'd go back for again. Noodles were super greasy and salty. Beef broccoli was mediocre. Honestly the only "good" entree was the orange chicken. The food and portions are very good. I go for the combos because ordering separate dishes has gotten too expensive but not only at Hao's; this applies to most restaurants. The food is very tasty and authentic. We've tried the orange chicken, sweet & sour pork, chow mein, fried rice, egg rolls and a few other items. All were delicious and always a hearty portion. Wait time is only about 10 minutes or you can call in your order and it will be ready quickly. The entire staff is always very pleasant. The only thing they lack is egg foo young on their menu which is my favorite dish. If they added that dish, I would upgrade to 5 star for a small fast food restaurant. They do have tables to dine in but I believe almost everyone goes for takeout. The restaurant looks clean and is conveniently located on Yosemite Parkway for easy parking and pick up. It is a cash only restaurant so I have to remember that since I hardly ever carry cash. Keep up the good work Hao's and please consider adding egg foo young to your menu. read more

One of the better places to eat in Merced for not a lot of money. Tried the beef chow fun for the first time this time around and I like it more then the beef chow mein and the chow mein is really good. My husband loves the orange chicken and the shrimp fried rice is pretty good, the shrimp in the fried rice are on the bigger side so there's not that many.
