The chicken chow mein literally taste like bland chicken and white pepper even the 2 packets of soy sauce did not help IN THE SLIGHTEST. The crab Rangoon were barely filled and was expensive for the quality and quantity of them. Fried rice was the same and the chow mein, UTTERLY DISAPPOINTING. Orange chicken was the best thing we got and was mid, like lower than bad. Broccoli beef was hecka salty and tasted horrible . 3 1/2 stars based on my last few tries. I have been a long-time patron (mainly take-out) over the years, going all the way back to when they used to be located by Mountain Mike's. I must say their quality has gone downhill the past few years. There are now numerous better Chinese restaurants in town, something I honestly couldn't say 6-7 years ago. This review is based only on their vegetarian egg foo young. I think their egg foo young is delicious! it's definitely made fresh and there's lots of veggies in it and lots of egg. It's very tender and they make it without any flour like texture. They just use the egg and vegetables and seasoning. The gravy on top is absolutely delicious. I order it with no ginger because I don't like ginger flavor and I always order extra gravy on the side. The vegetables are still kind of crispy. There's a lot of egg. When they were on Geer this was our go to place. I have not gotten anything from them in a few years. The quality has gone down dramatically. Sesame chicken does not taste like it used to. Was salty had an off putting taste and the meat was tough and dry. Rice and chow mien was tasteless. Facilities run down. I went just before seven on a Friday night and no customers were there. Their website makes them look high end but when you get there they are ghetto. read more

Just okay. The service was fine. It's a cute little , very clean restaurant. But the food was just okay. The almond chicken was good, but not a fan of the baby corn they put in it. The fried rice and the chow mein that came in the C4 combination plate was barely acceptable. Very little flavor in both. The fried rice was like steamed brown rice with a tiny bit of veggies in it. My first time coming to this place and I left content with the overall flavor of the food and excellent service. The potstickers and chow mien were the highlight of our meal. The broccoli beef was decent enough that I ate it all. I didn't like the fried rice. Took off an entire star because the sweet hostess/server recommended anything off the shrimp menu and unfortunately I didn't like the hot and spicy shrimp dish. At first I though maybe I just didn't like the seasoning but then I wiped down the shrimp and washed it with my water at the table and realized that the shrimp had a bad taste that made the entire dish taste funny. I will definitely be coming back for the chow mien! Also note the food came out popping hot (which I love) so be careful not to burn your mouth like I did lol read more

The food lacked flavor and you could just tell it was cheeks from looking at it . I wish I had gone to Panda Express that's how bad it was. The hostess had a black eye and her boyfriend was right there just watching her . You could tell it was the bf . He had no food or water just sitting there watching her every move. Ordered Hunan Chicken, one of the lunch specials of the day. The chicken tasted fresh and came in fairly large pieces. However, the meat and vegetables seemed drowned in too much sauce, giving the dish a overly salty and somewhat soupy flair. The pork fried rice had little pork and the chow mein just plain. Maybe, by trying some of their other dishes, I can give a more favorable view of the food at this restaurant. Some of my favorite places have gone out of business and this is one the few places that's still around and that can replace my old favorites. So far I've been coming here for about a year and there isn't a dish I don't like. I had a migraine today and my stomach is super sensitive so I ordered the chicken noodle soup. Pains me to write this review being that I've been coming here for year but today I had the worst service. I don't know if the young lady at the register is new but she had a hard time counting and giving me back my change. Once I got my change and got into the car I notice I was short a couple bucks. I went inside and said hey I think you might have shorted me a couple bucks and she laughed and said " hehe I was hoping you didn't come back in and I didn't wanna be a snitch but you dropped two dollars." I read the (mixed) reviews and thought we'd give it a try. This is the first negative review on Yelp I have ever written, but disappointed doesn't even cover it. Lemon chicken: bright orange with a vaguely citrus taste. Tough chicken, average breading. Pork egg foo young: thick patties almost completely bean sprouts, not the rather delicate egg discs with veggies I was expecting. The sauce had no flavor. Mongolian beef: listed as spicy, but again no discernible flavor other than soy sauce. Certainly no spicy flavors. Not only have I lived in the bay Area, and know good Chinese food, I also lived in Santa Cruz where there were superior oriental restaurants of all types, my father was a chef for 50 years, and my hobby is cooking Asian food (from my collection of 300+ cookbooks). Tonight's order from China Cafe was very disappointing. When we first moved to Turlock three years ago the food was great! Now not so much! Of course, I have heard all of the excuses from businesses etc. claiming that it is all due to the coronavirus. I get it. I really do. However, all I am asking for is some honesty. If China Cafe is no longer able to serve Tempura Shrimp. then simply remove it from the menu. If it is now too expensive to serve actual pork in the pork fried rice, then don't call it pork fried rice. Just call it fried rice. If the chicken chow mien no longer has chicken in it, don't call it Chicken chow mien. Just call it chow mien. Granted I am a very picky customer. A lot of that is because of food allergies and acid reflux. I ordered tempura shrimp because it has less grease in it then fried shrimp and therefore I am less likely to get acid reflux from it. So when I order tempura shrimp and it is replaced with fried shrimp, I am not very happy because now I am expecting a not too fun evening of acid reflux. I will not eat all six shrimp and hope and pray that I don't have acid reflux tonight because someone thought that replacing my tempura shrimp with fried shrimp is no big deal. I will be thinking of China Cafe at 3 am as the acid creeps up my throat. No, fried shrimp is not the same as tempura shrimp. Fried shrimp is much easier to prepare and has more grease. Perhaps the fact that it is easier to prepare was the reason for the substitution. Since my husband picked up the order, I was not there to catch the substitution. My husband did catch the fact that we ordered two Lemon Chicken Combos and only got one. That problem was quickly solved. I will say that. At any rate, honesty is, as they say, the best policy and that is all that I am asking for! read more

Ok so here is the truth this place offers decent food. However the PRICES keep going high. They don't put onions or bell peppers in the sweet and sour chicken they refuse to be set themselves apart from other Chinese food. The owner is very arrogant acts, talks like he doesn't need your business seriously. He believes that you buy what he sells they way he offers it or don't buy anything. ALa cart entrees are so expensive my god!!! Sometimes you can't eat inside sometimes you can't. They put so much ice in the drink you get very little soda half the time they try not to give you a refill. They have specials on their board but my god you should see the prices outrageous. I no longer would recommend this place. He can't even keep employees in this place. Constantly quitting because he is so demanding with little pay. He made an employee work longer than they could and threatened if they could not they would be fired. This is true because I spoke to employee and or I was actually involved. I strongly suggest you try FRIENDLY HOUSE Chinese restaurant on Geer rd in Turlock behind Wendy's next to the Bakery shop. This Chinese place is now owned by NEW owners the food is fantastic , delicious and the prices are really good. To me they under price their food they should charge a little more it's still way less than China Cafe. As they say you get what you pay for. It's funny because China Cafe they over charge for food.
