Two reasons why my family likes Hansen's: 1- I was looking for a wetsuit. I'm a picky old lady with a big, um, well, I'm not a 6. I tried on about every suit in my size and told them what I liked and didn't like and they told me where to find my dream come true - at another store. They sent me to another store! And I found my dream and Betty (that's my wetsuit) and I are very happy together. 2- When my kids get their awesome report cards, they can take them to Hansen's and get $6 store credit for every A! I think they get something for B's too, but (nose in the air), my kids get straight A's. So they get major Hansen's cash. The only place they failed was when I was shopping for Sheena - my new bodyboard. They have an excuse for bodyboard selection and nada for women. I get the feeling they're kinda snooty about bodyboarders. Whatever. read more

I work a typical 9-5 job. I have been to Hansen's (in the daylight) 3 times in the past month and they have been closed. Their hours are not consistent so I can never remember when they are open until 9pm or 6:30pm. Last visit, I thought a weekend morning would be perfect, but they don't open until 10am? The last thing I want to do is run errands in the middle of the day during a summer weekend. read more

If you want to shop at a place with a fairly wide selection of gear and clothing, pay a higher price for those items (unless on sale), and don't care if you receive little to no customer service, then this is the place for you! I had stopped shopping here several years ago because of the poor service and help in finding the right gear. But I thought I'd give them another try since it had been a few years. Nothing seems to have improved with their customer service. It is rare that anyone has ever approached me to see if I need help when looking at the surfboards, surf gear, casual women's wear, and other items in the store. When I went to find someone to get help or have my questions answered, I found people congregating with co-workers, chatting away instead of helping customers. If a shop has higher prices than other places, then I expect there to be service in return for paying more for the same products that other shops carry. I would not recommend shopping at Hansen's. There are many better surf shops in Encinitas, Oceanside, and Solana Beach that will give you customer service and more reasonable prices. My favorite large surf shop is Surf Ride in Oceanside. In Encinitas, I recommend Encinitas Surf Shop for surfing gear and customer service. UPDATED REVIEW: 3.5 Stars (previously rated 2) I ventured back into the store to look for a spring wetsuit. I initially did some looking on my own, but didn't immediately find the women's suits (I thought I was looking at the kids section). I waited for a staff member to finish with a customer and then asked him for help. He directed me to the appropriate area and found some spring suits in my size. They didn't have any Xcel suits for women so I decided to try on the O'Neill long-sleeved shorties. One size felt a tad big large and the other size felt incredibly too small. I decided that I was more interested in trying the Xcel but it didn't seem clear how I could buy it with my gift certificate since it was not in stock at the store. It was available online (I checked before I came to the store). Long story short, staff member Squeally came over to help as he overheard our conversation. He said they could order the suit for me and then I could pay with the gift certificate when the suit was delivered. But first, he advised me to make sure I knew what size I needed. He also showed me how each manufacturer uses different materials and how to make sure I buy the right size (it will stretch a bit in the water and after wearing). Had I not spoken with him, I would have purchased the wrong size O'Neill shortie. Since Hansen's did not have any Xcel spring suits in stock he called a buddy of his and I went to another shop to try on the suit. I completed some paper work so that all I needed to do was phone him to tell him what size and he would take care of it. I found the right size at this other shop, but didn't like the style (very short shorts). So, I went back to Hansen's to try on a smaller sized O'Neill shortie, having learned that the size I tried was likely too large. Thankfully, they had the right size available and I was able to purchase it. I found out that they had previously given me a suit 2 sizes smaller and that's why it seemed way too small. Someone I had not seen previously in the store checked me out. I was happy to be leaving the store with a shortie as the water is now so warm and I didn't want to wear my 4/3 suit this weekend. As I got ready to leave the store, I asked to make sure he had taken off the anti-theft device and he said yes. However, when I went out the front door the sensors went off and I had to go to the other cashier to verify that I had paid for the purchase, She was friendly, took off the theft device, and looked at my receipt to see who had checked me out. She said that he is sometimes forgetful about taking off the anti-theft devices. The best part of my experience was working with Squeally. He was incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. I will ask for him, if I go into the store again. read more

Huge aelection of all gear, most recognized brands, and a few you've never heard of. Staff is friendly and quick to help in each department. Huge selection of boards, def more than all the other shops in town put together. Even larger selection of wetsuits, and now a dedicated building next door for RipCurl brands and a full wetsuit selection. This is the place I go to when I need something in a pinch for the kids or to browse their huge selection of flip flops. People are always really friendly here. What I don't like is their awful selection of women's clothing and swimsuits. It really could be improved. Everything is so shapeless and sized for very tall women. It's all kinda ugly too (sorry I don't mean to offend anyone but it's the truth.) Did pick up some awesome kechika board shorts and a La Blanca swimsuit which I love. They try to carry so much that sometimes it's not so great when you need a specific something or other. They could also use a better selection of boys swimwear -- the rash guards are in separate ends of the store from the board shorts so it's a real pain to try to match up rash guards to board shorts. read more

If you are thinking of going skiing, and you don't have your own equipment I would highly suggest going to Hansens to rent it. I recently took my sons on a ski trip and decided to rent the equipment before getting to the slopes. I am so glad I did! It was a pleasure to deal with the whole team there. They sized us for skis and snowboards, and everything fit and worked perfect. The pricing was less than if we rented from the resort, they gave us travel days that weren't charged, and we didn't have to stand in the long lines everyday to rent from the ski resort. To me this is a "No-Brainer" choice for rental ski and snowboard equipment. Thanks again to all of the guys back in the rental section for making this an easy and pleasurable experience! read more

Hansen's has everything you could want from surf art to boards, wetsuits & awesome apparel & accessories. In the winter there shop transforms into the best snowboard/ski shop around. I've been shopping there for years and love the large selection of ladies apparel. The only negative thing I could say is that I recently stopped by to look for a swimsuit for an upcoming vacation and there suit selection gets pretty slim in the winter. Had a very positive experience buying a surfboard from Hansen's. Had my eye on a specific model, waffled on it, then emailed the shop a few days later to see if it was still around. Their customer service team emailed me back really quickly and offered to put a 24 hr hold on it for me. Came in the next day and worked with Lucas for maybe an hour all together selecting fins, traction pad, and leash. He put it all together with me and shared great tips along the way. This is my first shortboard and my first brand new board. Would have been easy to talk down to me or try to intimidate me, I got none of that. Just consistently straightforward and well informed advise without any sense of sales pressure or condescending attitude. I had a really good time, learned a ton, and am super stoked with the resulting surfboard. Pricing felt fair and honest, selection was great and again service couldn't be beat. Hansen's is a local Encinitas staple. My daughter received a Hansen's t-shirt for her first birthday, and we were stoked! They have everything known to man in this place. Trendy clothing for men, women and children, glasses, boards, wetsuits, shoes, flip flops, bondo boards, lotion, cards, decorations - you name it, they probably have it. The staff has always been pretty cool, whichever department I have been in. Our latest adventure, the girl even dug out some cool stickers to share with my toddler. I appreciate the attention to my kiddies! They can be a bit expensive, but you are also buying brands that aren't exactly cheap, so - I'll take that at face value. read more

If you have any complaints about the customer service here, I imagine you have it everywhere you shop and the problem isn't the employees, it's more likely your personality. I've read some complaints on here about customer service issues at Hansen's and I don't get it. I've had nothing but GREAT service here. If anything, the customer service is so good that it's probably hard to spread it around evenly at times because the employees are doing everything they can to make sure that the customer they are working with is totally stoked on their purchase. Here's my latest story of shopping at Hansen's and why I'll always go back and you should go there too... Buying a surfboard can be a daunting experience. You're going to lay out at least $600-$1100+ depending on what you're buying. And, when you do make the purchase, you're really hoping that it will float you properly, especially when you're a big guy like myself. That's why I was stoked to go to their "Shaper Session" last May. Matt Biolos of Lost Surfboards was there and sat down with customers that wanted a custom shaped board and did the design right there on the spot. On top of that you got $100 off your board and just to out do themselves, they had free stuff for the kids, a taco truck and some beer and wine for the adults. That kind of vibe is what a surf shop is all about. So I sat down with Matt and he worked up a board for me. While I was waiting for it to arrive, I checked in with Hansen's several times. Lucas was my point of contact and couldn't have been more helpful. He was even nice enough to call me to tell me that the board was a little behind schedule because Lost Surfboards were having trouble finding a blank big enough for my board. Think about that for a second. Lucas went out of his way to call me with BAD news. That's pretty damn admirable. Rather than let me sit and wonder when it's going to come in, and knowing that the call might not make me all that happy or be a pleasurable experience for him if I were to get upset about it, he still had the courtesy of making the call. When it did arrive, there was a feature of the board that I had requested that was missing and they brought it up to me rather than me needing to bring it up to them. Their number one interest was me being 100% stoked with the purchase. I evaluated the board and asked what my options were if I took it out and it didn't work for me. "If you take it out and don't like it, we will work with you on getting you into the right board or having them shape a complete new board, no hassles." was what Lucas said. So I took it out, and the feature that was missing wasn't an issue. But being totally out of shape, I wasn't catching any waves. And, when I was out that day, I saw someone catching everything that they paddled into on a Walden Mega Magic 8'0" so I took it back the next morning. Not a single issue with the return. No hassles, no worries. Took a small amount off the purchase price for a restocking fee (since it had been waxed up and taken out in the water), but that was it. And when they were setting up the 9'6" Mega Magic I was buying, they pointed out that the bottom of the board had some yellowing (I totally missed it) and offered to order a new one or discount the board. I opted for the discount and was in and out of the store in less than 45 minutes and that included me waxing the board up on the show room floor. I caught the first 3 waves that I tried for and was definitely stoked and grateful that they were so easy to work with at Hansen's. Hansen's is the real deal and their customer service is beyond exceptional. You might have to wait a few minutes for someone to free up from helping someone else, but it's because buying a new board is a BIG decision and they go out of their way to make sure you're getting the right board. Big thanks to Lucas, Squealy, Jesse, Ken, and everybody else who was part of getting me the right board, with no hassles, and getting me back in the water!!! read more

This place doesn't need a review. It's a staple of the community loved by locals and visitors alike. I'm only writing this review to this shop I've been coming to my whole life because of one reason: Sandra. I walked in three days after Christmas to get a "Christmas" present for my wife. We had just married December 1st, and having paid for the wedding we agreed not to get each other any gifts for Christmas . Sandra went so above and beyond to make it special that she even ran upstairs and dug up Christmas wrapping paper and wrapped it perfectly for me! The entire time we carried on a conversation about the wedding and honeymoon and plans for the future. I enjoyed talking to her more than most of my friends. I did feel silly carrying out a Christmas present three days after but I've also procrastinated my whole life so it's nothing new. Wow!!! Ken has been absolutely amazing!!!! This guy fit my wife and I for skis and he totally went above and beyond making sure we had the right gear. He took the time to educate us as well as fit each of us perfectly for our ski trip. When i found out legendary skier Down Hill Bill was back at Hansen's I made the trip back to my home roots driving up through torrey pines to del mar winding solana past swamis and on to hansens for the 2016-2017 ski and snowboard season. God I love that drive...and love my old hood. Bill works wonders with skis and snowboard boots. Every avid and not so avid rider and skier knows a good fit is vital for a good experience. Not only is comfort important but my heel slippage was hurting my responsiveness and thus my performance snowboarding. This has always been a problem for me because of what i thought were my narrow heel side but my inner boot seemed to be slipping. Bill fixed the problem within minutes! If you're a skier or snowboarder and are getting ready you got to stop by Hansen's and ask for world famous Ski man Bill the down hill assassin. He will not only fix your boots but give you lots of invaluable pointers on skiing and life if you ask him haha. Going to Hansen's surf shop is way worth the drive and if you get some spare time you can surf swamis or go shopping, eating, or perusing in town because the neighborhood is lovely. Thankfully John gave us lots of information and gave this clueless mom lots of options for my son's Christmas present. Came the other day because I was looking with my friends for a place we could rent skis in near San Diego, and this was the only location that was coming up online. I called and asked if you could rent at that location and I was greeted and transferred to the rental phone line. At first the man who answered was kind and helpful but when I asked if you need to be 18 or have an adult sign something in order to rent, and I was surprised when I heard the man laugh at me. He told me yes you do and laughed on. Not sure what was so funny. I come the next day to rent skis with my friend and I was met by an awesome dog that was roaming the store and woman who said hello. I was looking for the ski rental place and asked another worker how do I rent and he guided me over to the rental place where I was to be helped by another employee. A man walks out and I ask is there where we rent skis? And he says yes..... and that's about it. We stare at him for a few more seconds and I finally ask if we can rent some. He says sure but they're limited on their supply and he'll go look. He walks over and asks my friend a couple questions. He's where the big problem started. Automatically from the very beginning the man talks down in a condescending way to my friend asking him what kind of skier he is and redundantly assuming his skill level. My friend answers his questions but the man treats us like we're 12 year olds. We are willing to pay customers and your store treats us like we're just kids. I could go to Mcdonalds and be treated with more respect than your employee gave us. Eventually the man gets a pair of skis for my friend and says that they'll work and then he brings over a pair of skis for me that we're obviously extremely too small for me and tells me that those might work but they're really small for me. (The skis were about upper chest level on me which is extremely small for me and any skier) so he says that's all he's got in store and asked what we're going to do. I talk to my friend and we sit there for a few more minutes and decide well do it whatever but not without asking for any more skis. The man asks us in a rushed and angry tone "so what's the deal? You guys gonna rent or not?" And we ask him are there any other skis? Because I could not use the skis he was suggesting for me. He sighs and points to another pair and says "I mean you could use those over there if you want...". I walk over and pick them up and they're perfectly sized for me. Why didn't he give me these before? Why didn't he suggest these? I said sure I'll use these. We walk over and fill out some paperwork. On the rental paperwork it asks us what kind of skier are we and there was a poster on the wall of the counter that told us what it said so we read it and found out what type we were. The man walks over and says "You guys know that you don't look at the skis to find out which ski level you are. Do you know what that is?" And I say "we weren't looking at the skis we were looking at the poster." And he responds with "oh thought you were staring at the skis". Again, treatment like we're not paying customers, with little respect and a rude attitude. Next, My friend tells the man that there's a bump in his shoe and the man just says "okay. That's all we have, so..." and he doesn't even care to look at it. This is what I mean by he treated us like we were just 12 year old kids who don't know anything. Finally he sets us up and we're about ready to leave but we don't have any ski poles just the boots and skis and we don't say anything because we thought he would say something so we stood there and he's says "oh yeah, you guys need poles, here you go" hands us the poles and we're out of the store. I am 17 years old and so was my friend but we were treated like we were just simpleminded children with no knowledge of anything. I hope that you change the way your employee treats his customers because when you make a customer feel that way it discourages them from coming back. It can hurt them especially when you're alienated from the other customers because you don't look like an adult. It's really unfortunate to know that the dog gets more care and respect than we did in our visit to Hansens. read more

They were able to custom order a body board for my Grandson and have it in my hands within one week - which made it possible for me to give it to him on his birthday. The service they provided me and the way they went above and beyond to ensure I received the board in time was exceptional. read more
