During the weekend of impending Hurricane Irene, Han's Market was the only place left open on Saturday that we could find some fresh produce at. Stupid Key Food had closed. Typical. Hoorah for Han's though! We bought some beautiful tomatoes, some eggs, yogurt and some other needed items here hours before the storm was supposed to hit New York. I made a delicious insalata caprese with the tomatoes for my aunt and I to enjoy during the rain the next 2 days. It's nice to know that we can count on Han's Market when a natural disaster is looming!

My first meal in NYC was a bagel sandwich at Han's Market. My friend lives on Clark Street, and I was starving from my red eye flight, and I just really wanted a breakfast sandwich before I passed out for a bit. Walked to Han's Market, and saw they had a full breakfast menu and bagels. I decided to get a bagel sandwich with egg, cheese, and bacon. The cook was quite busy at the time, so I was looking at the chalkboard menu of their lunch sandwiches (they use Boar's Head, plus!), have fresh juices/smoothies, and a pretty decent market. They have simple items like chobani yogurt to alcohol and snacks. Lots of folks were coming in to grab some coffee to go as well. Seemed like a very nice neighborhood market, and my sandwich was only $3.50. I paid for it at the cashier around the corner, and the cashier (I am assuming part of the owner's family) looked not very nice as he didn't smile or talk. The bacon was good of course, the egg, much more than I had expected, and too much kraft american cheese for me. But it was so yummy and since I was so hungry, I scarfed it down fast. I ended up coming back the next morning for a bagel with cream cheese. They didn't have the lox cream cheese (boo!), but the chive one was good as well. For a toasted bagel with cream cheese, it was $2.50. So I think if you want the meat, cheese, and eggs, the breakfast sandwiches are only $1 more. again, the cashier didnt look so happy when I came to pay, but owell. Not sure if they take credit card, but I'm thinking they do. They are right next to the Clark Subway station.

Well the deli/juice bar is closed to day . But still that calls for tea and cake time as snacks .

Han's makes the best breakfast sandwiches in BK Heights. A hidden gem, truly.

It's actually about frustration in signing up for online shopping; I have tried randomly over a…read moreperiod of months to get a functioning account and have never succeeded. Nor can I get anyone who "does" the online service management or get relevant answers from the Contact Us link. Last night I got to the checkout, and then the site kept asking me for the order number. ??? That ended the order going through. Mohammed tried to help by doing it verbally over the phone but there were too many items to deal with. It had been a go-to-shop for me since it opened, but after an accident I can't easily go in-person and now apparently I can't shop there at all or find anyone who is responsible/helpful for the site's customer functionality.

This has been my (very) local grocery store for over a decade, and unfortunately it has taken a…read moresteep turn downhill. What was once a family-owned, excellent grocery store run by wonderful people who cared is now a Key Food with a different name. I mean that literally; they were bought by Key Food during the pandemic, and they laid off all the employees (that we loved), brought in more self-checkout, and the quality of the produce has fallen off a cliff, while the prices have climbed to extortionist levels. For the most part, the replacement staff is quite nice and usually helpful (there are a couple bad apples that seem upset you need assistance). The guys behind the prepared food counter will do a solid job on your sandwich, and the cashiers are usually pleasant and almost always efficient. They still have a rewards program where if you spend around $250 and you get like $10 credit. (Hey, it's better than nothing.) The expansion of the store a few years back means they truly have just about everything, and the beer and ice cream selections are actually phenomenal (but overpriced). However, produce we buy is occasionally going bad already, and the prices are wildly out of control. I paid $7 for two onions last week. It becomes harder and harder to justify shopping here when it's more expensive than Fresh Direct, and vastly more pricey than the fruit and vegetable spots a few blocks away. I don't risk the meat and fish any longer (not with Paisanos and Fish Tales in the hood), although Bell & Evans chicken is quite reliable. Basically, Brooklyn Fare went from an incredible market to have across street to a last-resort for items I forgot to purchase elsewhere in the neighborhood, at reasonable prices. They know we're coming in when we need something, and we're going to pay for it. Despite these shortcomings, it's still great to have a corner store that has just about everything. I can still run out and grab some milk for my wife's cookies when I've finished the last drop and she looks particularly stabby. But it's going to cost $7 for half a gallon.
