Wow, this was my favorite surprise spot to eat during a trip to Paris! The Vietnamese-French bistro is simply delicious to the point that in a city of so many great options, we returned twice in less than a week. The presentation of both the restaurant and the food is classy, yet unpretentious, simple, yet casually modern. I was happy to order the bun cuon which isn't the easiest to find even in Vietnamese restaurants in big cities. My friend got pho with vegetables and spring rolls and went crazy for them. Fresh mint in the water? Excellent bonus! It was a great place to people watch as we sat right by the front door/sidewalk and is a good place for a light business lunch. I was on vacation in Paris , France and was shopping in the 4th district . I got so hungry while shopping and stumbled upon this Vietnamese place . It's was a tiny restaurant in a busy area very close to EatItaly and the Hotel de Ville . The service was excellent and the beef pho dish I ordered was amazing ! This is not a good representation of vietnamese food. Our huge family ordered the fried chicken eggrolls, luc lac beef, beef pho, chicken pho, bun cha and bun bo. Lets start with the fried chicken eggrolls- the fish sauce that came with it was diluted and does not have much flavor. The fried chicken rolls was crunchy on the outside but the filling inside has NO flavor. The luc lac beef came with undercooked rice mixed in a tomato paste. The beef tasted like it was done a while ago and reheated. Not good at all. The chicken pho tasted as though they mixed water and the chicken bouillon in there- it was super salty. The beef pho, the broth itself tasted like water and a pinch of chicken broth. There is no flavor ... the sauce that came with the pho is not your typical hoison sauce. It is more of an Indian spiced sauce. The bun cha that was served to us had undercooked pork. The bun bo was only flavored in turmeric... overall every meal lacked flavor or any sign of it being vietnamese. Then the dessert.... it was such a joke. The sweet banana tasted burnt and bitter. The 3 flavor dessert tasted like they just poured coconut juice in fruit with no sign of sweetness. The place is small and lack any kind of ambience. The service was subpar. I would NEVER recommend this place to anyone with working taste buds. read more

This is my favorite restaurant in Paris!!!! As a Vietnamese-American, I am so happy to have found this place. The restaurant is so chic and the menu have so many wonderful options. I especially loved the app + entree or app+entree+dessert option. I ordered a fresh coconut and this was the first time I've seen a fresh coconut anywhere in this city. I got the tamarind sour salmon soup (canh chua) and the dry beef noodles (bun bo). Food came out fast and wow!! What a gorgeous presentation, from my complimentary water to the dishes. They put a fresh mint inside a water carafe here and I love oh so fancy little touches like these! They also provide chilli peppers on a little side dish and I can tell that the owners put a lot of thought and effort into their restaurant. The pickled cabbage they put in the bun bo was so delicious I asked for extra! The flavorings is impeccable and I'm satisfied with my meal. I'm so impressed by the quality of service and foods here. I'm Viet and thought this place was just ok. I really liked their presentation, but if I was blindfolded, I would not have known it was Vietnamese food. For example, The fried rice that came with the Bo Luc Loc (steak beef cubes) was red because there was a tomato base that was mixed in the fried rice. This gave it more of a Spanish feel. I think this same paste was used in the steak sauce too. The sauce was sweet instead of savory with a thick texture from the tomato paste. I prefer a savory sauce. The wonton soup broth was bland and so was the banh cuon (Viet ravioli) My hubby had the pork in clay pot. The dish is supposed to be caramelized, but the sauce was runny instead. The cut of pork was also not ideal as it was dry. Overall, the flavors were underwhelming but the quality was good. The service was very nice and attentive. read more

My wife and I wanted Vietnamese... it was a Sunday and only a few options were open. Picked Hanoi based on TripAdvisor reviews. We were greeted rudely, and that continued into the prep of the meal. Though the seafood papaya was good, the clams were bad. We had frogs legs, where the sautee mix was well done, but the legs were greasy. Really disappointed. I'm a full blood Viet and I was dying for Vietnamese food of my homeland since I was burnt out on foreign food. North Vietnam was colonized by the French so I expected the pho (native to north Vietnam also the name of the restaurant) to do this one dish well. I was wrong. The broth was so incredibly bland. It lacked depth, seasoning and just all of it. Also the Dac Biet which means the grand whammy in English is supposed to have the cuts of meat that you expect most commonly 1. Tripe 2. Tendon 3. Brisket 4. Rare beef. It only had the last two. Only was I can defend is I believe they probably trained someone to make the broth. If you're not rooted in the flavors of a culture you wouldn't know what to fix, add or taste for. Viet food is a culture of taste testing. Less measuring. Huge let down. read more

I think I've had the best thit bo luc lac and canh chua ca here! Everything was really delicious and I loved every bite of it. Their shrimp and chicken salad was really good, too! I'd definitely want to visit again! We started off with the chicken and shrimp salad and it had the right amount of spice to it. Then I had the Canh chua ca and I loved how they cooked the fish first and then put it in the broth (usually people cook the fish in the broth). My husband got the bo luc lac and the meat was perfectly cooked. What I wasn't familiar with was the type of rice they added (an egg fried rice) and the egg sunny side up on the side! No kidding: it was expensive, but so good I can't give them anything else but 5 stars! It is without any doubt the best Vietnamese restaurant I have ever been in so far. The main room, as well as the second one downstairs, are quite small and quickly full (price of their well deserved success! make a reservation!), but still very agreeable and well laid out (and with air con!). The staff is very friendly and speak several languages. As for the food: it tastes absolutely amazing!! No matter if cooked or raw, if starters, soup, wok or full meal... the flavors will ravish you. Got the prix fixe at 25 €, with nem and Bo bun. It was delicious. I like that it was unpretentious and doesn't put on airs like some of the other places in the neighborhood. But the flip side of that is that it did seem a little expensive to me for what you get. The decor is OK, nothing very fancy, and it is quite small inside. There wasn't any outside seating, at least when I was there. The waitress was matter of fact, not friendly or unfriendly. Tucked away on a side street in the Marais, this restaurant never fails and I go here at least once a fortnight. It's the only place in Paris which makes delicious fully vegetarian pho and their tofu spring rolls with pineapple are incredible. It is pricey - but if you go at lunch time and choose from their starter/dessert + main lunch menu, it works out much much cheaper and just as delicious!
