I visit La Grange a lot, and thought it was about time I give this place a try. I was so glad I did. The food seriously tastes like home cooking. I went through the drive-through to order and when someone pulled in behind me they told me to pull out front and they would bring out my order. It did not take very long and I thought everything tasted great that day. They have different specials every day. I tried the fried fish platter and I thought the fish was good, the carrots were average and I did not care for the coleslaw. I guess it really depends on what they are serving on the day that you go. The employees were very friendly and the food was reasonably priced so I would definitely recommend trying Hanks Express. read more

Going by the name, I didn't know what to expect. Well, this is one of those family owned, small town fantastic restaurants That you always look for! What a surprise! The 3 people with me all went for the normal cafe food this type of restaurant is famous for, and loved it. Me? I'll have the special please, steak and shrimp. A perfect medium rare, I'm now too stuffed for dessert. I watched everyone have pie ala mode, but that's ok. I took my to go. The owner, and some of the staff were older women, and everyone of them were just as sweet as they could be. We talked with them till it was time to close. Friendly service, good tasting food, clean surroundings, very reasonable pricing. The Daily Special was a choice of Pepper Steak or Fried Fish, with rice, broccoli, and cinnamon apples. We ordered one of each. I'm a bit of a wimp about pepper, but this was spiced enough for my husband (who likes a bit of bite) yet not too much for me. I call that perfect! The rice was a bit dry with the fish, but perfect with the pepper steak, as it had the wonderful steak juices over it. So many times we go to restaurants and the vegetables need to be cut with a steak knife. Why cook them at all if they are going to be served that raw? Hank's served them soft enough to eat without the knife, but not so overcooked that they were mush. The cinnamon apples reminded us of our childhood days. We liked them so much that I bought apples so I could make some at home! When in LaGrange, take that 1 block detour off the main thoroughfare and stop in at Hank's! After hearing about this place for some time, we were in La Grange for lunch. We drove by and was surprised the parking lot was full and the drive through line wrapped around the restaurant! It was 12:30. Luckily found a spot after driving around. Pulled in and went in. Talk about packed! The lady at the counter was very nice and told us the special was chicken fried steak, green beans and mashed potatoes. We went with the special and took our plate to the only table available. The chicken fried steak was good and homemade! Mashed potato's were freshly made, not instant and the green beans were great with good bacon! Got to the counter and looked at the breakfast menu lying there and after speaking, with zero response, a lady walked up to the counter, grabbed the menu and said "we're not serving breakfast anymore" and turned and walked away. They have weekly daily specials that change weekly....... today on Thursday it was chicken fried steak with chicken gravy, potatoes, cold cucumber and onion salad, green beans, homemade country wheat and white bread, several homemade pies to chopsticks from, cowboy cookies, and three different soups on hand. Worst burger I have ever had in the state of Texas. I paid $10 for a cheese burger with fries and a drink. For the price I was expecting a lot. I got very little. The fries were probably out of a bag and served to me soggy. So they either don't know how to fry or don't care. The meat on my burger looked and tasted like cardboard. Saw today's special on the marquee...Chicken and Dumplings and had to check it out. My taste buds were in for a treat! I received a fair share of the Chicken and Dumplings, their 5 veggie mix and a salad. The C&D were to die for, chunks of chicken and bite sized dumplings in a thick rich gravy. The hostess, seeing that I had eaten all the C&D even asked if I would like some more which I gladly accepted!
