Great food, friendly service and excellent atmosphere. Family dinner was a success. Recommended and will return.

We've been here a few times. The foods good, though we haven't found any favorite dishes yet. It's all pretty standard TexMex fare. But they do seem to be trying. And at least they don't oversalt everything with Fiesta seasoning like some places do. They don't have a liquor license but they serve beer, wine and frozen margaritas, which aren't bad but they're officially "wineritas" because they don't have tequila in them. But my wife likes them. The interior space is pretty nice, especially the Eastern room. But some of the booths are old and really need new cushions in them. I'm hoping they invest in this place when the new, nearby community opens up and they gain new patrons. If it improves, we'll come here more often. It has potential. That said, we were disappointed on this visit. The waiter literally pulled something out of my drink with his fingers before serving it to me, hoping I wouldn't notice. Who does that? If something's fallen into it, just take it back to the kitchen and get another one. Don't dip your fingers into guests' drinks. Please. The guacamole was interesting. Just unseasoned, mashed up avocado. No onion. No serrano peppers. Little to no salt or lime. Diced tomatoes were served on the side (as not to water down the guac), and it was served over shredded iceberg lettuce. I did taste fresh. And there was salt on the table if you wanted it. I guess I just expected it to be more prepared. It would have been a nice respite from the heat if our meal was spicy. But we've never had anything there that was spicy. read more

So I have been recently eating at this establishment and the service has been awesome. This is my 5th time eating here. I have to say. This place is very attentive to its customers. This place is also very friendly. Y'all are missing out by not eating here. It's a chill place and I like the food. There is plenty of parking and the folks here are very nice. I usually get the enchiladas or the fajitas. I guess small towns culture is like you're in or you're out. so do yourself a favor and come visit this restaurant and order some good Tex max food and chill. We arrived about twenty minutes after they opened so service was fast and friendly. I like the ambiance it was old school with classic country music playing. The food was good but they do use bought tortilla chips and the queso was a little runny, my wife had the cheese enchilada plate and I had a beef chili relleno plate. The enchiladas were supposed to be topped with chili gravy but really it was red enchilada sauce with meat. And the flour tortillas that came with the plates were homemade but way undercooked! Still tasted of lard and flour. All in all not a bad little place and portions were plentiful for the price. read more

Small place ! But absolutely the most amazing beef fajita meat I think I have ever eaten! They have a buffet on Friday, Saturday night and all day on Sundays. Haven't tried it yet , but will before too long! read more

This place used to be pretty decent until ownership changed; the food is now terrible. Ordered my old favorite the burrito and it wasn't even cooked. We debated what the gelatinous substance was at the bottom of the burrito; a strange proccessed cheese or unknown Mexican congealed rice product. Either way chips and salsa sucked, quesadillas sucked, beef taco sucked, and the enchiladas sucked. They dont have a liquor license either so there is no alcohol to help you eat the nasty food. Don't waste your money. Used to joke about this place being in a gas station; now it is a joke. read more

I've been to this restaurant 3 times, I think. Twice with my mom before I lived in Bastrop, and once recently with my husband, though we've been talking about going since we moved to Bastrop in summer 2009. Basically when we drove from Bastrop to Smithville I would tell my husband that we should go to La Cabana even though it isn't any good, just because we don't have that many restaurant choices. That wasn't all that compelling/convincing to him, so that's probably why we took so long to go. But the place was actually a bit better than I remembered. On the night we went, he wanted Mexican food and I didn't, so a lightbulb came on in my head and I knew where we should go (La Cabana has Mexican food, catfish/shrimp type plates, burgers/sandwiches, and I think even a couple of pasta dishes, so it's good for that type of situation). When we sat down (in the slightly-better-smelling nonsmoking part of the restaurant) we ordered iced teas and were asked whether we wanted chips and salsa. They were free, so we wanted them. At first I was disappointed in the chips as they were very dark and greasy, but then somehow my perception of them changed and I couldn't get enough of them. The salsa was also a nice surprise ... if you like Chuy's ketchup-y salsa, then you'll like La Cabana's, because it's prettymuch the same. I believe my husband ordered a tamale-and-taco combination plate with rice, beans, and guacamole. I ordered fried catfish and french fries. My meal came with salad bar, but since I don't eat lettuce salads I made sure with the waitress that my husband could eat the salad instead, and she was fine with that, so that was cool. The salad bar was fine ... I've seen better and I've seen worse, both in terms of quality and in terms of selection. The items available all seemed fresh and of decent quality. My husband thought his food was okay. When I tried it I found it bland, and it brought back vague memories of TV dinner Mexican food. Perhaps he was okay with it's blandness because, since he's from a different part of the country and had parents that weren't food-adventurous, he didn't grow up eating Mexican food. Also, the guacamole was clearly from some sort of mix, rather than being just fresh avocados with a few additions, so don't be all that excited that most of the Mexican dinners come with it. My catfish was pretty good. It was fried correctly and I didn't have to scrape off much grey fishfat, so I appreciated that. The fries were okay, kinda school-cafeteria-like though. And yes, I ate my Texas toast. I wasn't very hungry, and my husband's meal was filling enough so that he just concentrated on that and didn't want much extra food, so I ended up taking home 2 catfish fillets and some of the chips and salsa (I told you they grew on me!). Having leftovers to take home made the place seem like more of a good value. Is this place great? No. Is it worth a try if you are either (a.)driving down 71 and realize that you are hungry or (b.) an inhabitant of an area where there are relatively few restaurants, who needs variety in order to not go crazy? Yes. So what I'm saying is, we'll be back, it just might be awhile. read more

5 stars for the service and say 4 stars for the food, such super great service, we think it was the owner or manager that kept coming to the table making sure everything was Ok and if we needed anything. Great selection on the buffet, fresh, and they even had cat fish that was very good. The desert bar was very well maintained and very good. Frozen margaritas were good and strong in the icy glass. The reason for the four stars this was the rating on the buffet only, like I said very good but it was a buffet. BUT, OH YEAH we will be back. We highly recommend....don't know why it has only two stars, it needs many more.. read more

They forgot my order. When they realized this, they said it would be out soon. I then got it in two plates. The first plate was a taco that they could make quickly. The second plate was the rest of my order that was undoubtedly made after they realized their mistake. They never acknowledged that they missed my order. I'm not 100% sure they even apologized for the noticeable delay. Had they just addressed it properly I wouldn't have cared. Also the food was bland as hell. I don't cook often but it wouldn't take me much effort to make tastier food. read more

We have eaten here a few times over the last couple of years and the quality of the food has gone down substantially. The sweet tea was old and almost rancid to taste, we all switched them out for fountain drinks. We tried the salad, fajitas, tacos and enchiladas. Everything seemed to be old as if it had been sitting all day, but we were eating at 7:30 on a Saturday night. There were some sort of bugs crawling on the table and the waiter said "It's ok" and pointed at the wall as if it were to blame. We will not be back. read more

Before we moved to Texas we came out to visit our dear friends who live in between Bastrop and Smithville on a horse ranch . They introduced us to La Cabana and ever since that first visit, after we moved to the area, we have been going to La Cabana at least once a week for dinner. The prices are very reasonable and the menu is varied. They have great enchilanda poblano, and I love their spring chicken salad with the grilled chicken. read more

Food was mediocre at best. Service was good. Ambiance was OK. Stopped by as were passing through and was lured in by tex-mexy feel of the building. Met with friendly waiter who took out drink order and promptly returned and took our order. Food was delivered rather quickly and was hot and to order. Food was very subpar and lacked any real "good" factor. Everything tasted like enchilada sauce. Prices were a little high (esp compared to other Mexican restaurants in the area with great food). The worst part was that everyone who ate here felt a little ill later that night. Coincidence? Maybe, maybe not. We have chosen that from now on we will either drive on into Bastrop or La Grange (depending in our direction). read more

Just stopped in on my way through, right off the highway and convenient. I was promptly greeted and told I could sit anywhere. Chips and salsa and a menu quickly appeared, and my dunk order was taken. Chips are good, salsa is mediocre. I ordered the carnitas plate. It came out quickly, with homemade tortillas, but the carnitas had obviously been cooked and reheated. The rest of the plate was great, the veggies mixed with the carnitas were nice and crunchy, which is how I prefer them, but still cooked. Rice and beans were nothing special. read more

We ate there for years... it was our go to restaurant... we loved it... then it changed hands and now The food just tastes strange and is overly salted. Even after informing the establishment the change was not enjoyable. We went back a few months later with the same outcome. A real disappointment. read more

With so many Mexican restaurants in this area you have to wonder why the waiters are not very concerned about service. We had to flag someone down to take our order and when it came only half was brought. After waiting a few minutes I actually got up and asked a group who were standing around if someone could find the rest of my meal. When it finally came that was the last we saw of our waiter until the check was dropped on the table. No checking to see if we needed refills, no checking to see if everything was OK, just the check. Tips are for good service; no tip is what he got. We won't be back. read more

We were passing through and stopped to eat. it was very good service, we showed up before closing and everything was Excellent. They welcomed us and we're happy to serve us. The server kept our glasses full and kept checking on us. And OMG the food was awesome. My kids are picky and they ate everything on their plate which was a kids taco plate & cheese quesadilla plate and my daughter's spaghetti plate was sooooo delicious. my husband got the fajitas a LA Mexican and he said they were spicy but so delicious. I got a plate that had a sirloin topped with cheese and jalapeños and that too was delicious. oh and they have that really good crushed ice! So If you are in the area stop by!!! read more
