As Mike suspected, the issue wasn't related to venting but a clog somewhere between the upstairs toilet to the larger drainage pipe that traverse the two floors. During the repair, Mike replaced our toilet's gasket as a matter of routine (which was very helpful), and he started with a smaller auger to avoid damaging our piping. Not long afterwards, he was able to clear the clog, and he finished by putting the toilet back as it was. Both he and his apprentice respected our covered walking path and did not put heavy equipment beyond the cover.
