Found this cute little coffee shop tucked away in a little corner of Burnaby and we were delighted to be welcomed with such warm hospitality, tasty drinks and treats. It is a small space, but full of personality and charm. We ordered a Matcha Latte ($7), Japanese Latte ($7), and Matcha & Black Sesame Moffin ($1.50/each). I personally enjoy my matcha unsweetened so I loved that this one was served without sweeteners, and the matcha is lighter bodied with earthy flavours. The Japanese latte is made with coffee beans from Japan, and I'm not a coffee drinker usually so I can't comment much other than the fact it tasted mellow but had depth. The mochi muffins were not too sweet and deliciously chewy! I'd love to come back to try their hojicha latte! read more

I guess barista did not add too much sugar, however, I did not need it. Houjicha flavor was was very bold and strong, and paired with milk so well. I really enjoyed houjicha itself, no sugar necessary. It really reminds me of houjicha latte in Japan. Barista was Japanese lady. very friendly and nice. I was very impressed and definitely want to go back the shop as soon as I can. I want to try their baking goods next time. read more

Do you ever go into a cafe and think this is my vibe? Well this was it for me. I've been wanting to check out this small neighborhood Japanese cafe. Finally today was the day. I live about 5 minutes drive and often go to a couple of the other local Indian stores around. Lots of free street parking. This small unassuming cafe is full of charm. Walked in and I knew I was going to get a matcha latte. With handful of seating including a comfy couch, some benches outside, I could seat here and watch the world go by or listen to my audiobook like I was doing and be content. The two lovely individuals working was friendly and seems to know locals coming and going, which I love. And the gentlemen had style. My matcha was exactly how I liked it, unsweetened without me having to tell them. The cafe had some baked goods and other things they sold like coffee beans and matcha. Super cute little corner cafe! Happened to stumble upon this cafe as I was in the area. The interior was so cozy and gorgeous! This is more of a grab and go spot as it is not very big and very limited seating. I believe this is a family owned spot and the owners (at treats I think they were the owners haha) were very kind and welcoming! I got the a hojicha as I wasn't looking for anything too caffeinated but the menu serious intrigued me! They have your North American coffee classics as well as some Japanese cafe drinks! Cool Japanese folks. Very hipster and vintage, but not in a corny way. They definitely respect the craftsmanship and artistry of coffee making. Their Japanese dark pour over was so smooth. The flat white was maybe just a little too flat actually, but the shot of espresso had notes of oat and wood-- it was very earthy which is a great change from the usual sour stuff. They have kitschy and cute cups for water. I didn't try their food or pastries but they seem to have a good spread of choices. The only complaint I might have is that the seating was a little too tight and I felt like I was in the way of the staff. Not because of how they acted but the layout of the logistics and layout of the space. The staff were great and friendly. They had kind of annoying Christmas music playing the whole time, I wonder what they play off holiday. We would definitely come back here! read more

This is a great neighbourhood coffeehouse. We stopped by here after a quick Yelp search. Unfortunately, this is a take out only kind of place. There is no seating to enjoy the coffee. My husband ordered an Americano and I ordered a Kuromatcha latte (matcha and black sugar). Usually, I like my matcha latte unsweetened, but this version was perfectly lightly sweetened and the sweetness took some of the bitterness of the matcha away. Service was as fast as one person could make drinks. There was a steady line of customers which was a good sign this place is popular. Priced were reasonable too. read more

Very cute Japanese coffee shop with lots of character. Kind of like the unique coffee shops I hope to visit in Japan one day. All the customers spoke Japanese in quiet conversation and I could imagine myself transported to Japan. They had a delicious Vienna coffee special for the price of an americano. All the prices were well priced and if it weren't located so far from me, I would be a regular customer as they roast their own beans and the coffee is good. Yes, this is mainly a cafe. However, every other week, they sell ramen kits on Friday and Saturday. It's first come, first served, and the quantity is limited, so they sell out often by noon or 1pm. These are 4 portions of fresh, handmade wheat noodles and a small 8 oz container of a concentrated soup base. They have shio, shoyu, and miso. Today when I went, they had a truffle shio and whole wheat noodles. The noodles are thin style, like somen or angelhair pasta. We got the miso and the truffle shio kit. The miso paste looks like green curry paste, and results in an ochre green soup color. I think they make their own miso. The truffle shio mixed into a clear chicken broth results in an aromatic, delicate shio with dancing hints of truffle. After watching a lot of Youtube videos and reading through /r/ramen, I would say that I'm reasonably competent with making ramen broth from scratch, so this ramen kit mainly just added a different flavor note for comparison. It's definitely worth the special trip to the edge of Burnaby/New West, if you are a die-hard ramen connoisseur covid-trapped in the Lower Mainland. The flavor and style is distinct from the other ramen shops. There's a "homemade" kind of taste to it, with more subtle and delicate characteristics. The major ramen chains have to cook large batches and cater to the mainstream taste preference. Whereas, the Handworks owner is making his preferred style. read more

Handworks Coffee Studio is a welcome change from the plethora of chains and larger commercial operations and reminds me of how local cafes once were. Although reorganized due to the current pandemic, which has resulted in a removal of the seating available inside, I really like the new larger order board hanging behind the now much larger counter space. Still the great product selection in both beverages and roasted beans and service! Their standard roast is very low in acidity which works well with my sometimes sensitive stomach, so I'm finding this my go-to selection for my daily home needs. read more

I visited Handworks Coffee Studio today after biking past it few times on my way to downtown New West. It is such a refreshing little gem at a quiet corner on 6th Street. The decoration is lovely and they play great easy listening song. Generally it is a self-run coffee counter by a friendly Japanese gentleman who dedicates his passion on coffee (see their website). Absolutely great coffee, the cappuccino I had was really good. Note that they don't offer cafe styled seats at all. There were few chairs for you to just sit down and sip your coffee. It's also a nice little shop if you want to explore the various Zakkas (little things to improve your home, both vintage and modern Japanese). Important: this is not a good place for first dates (there are no table seats, just chairs). Not great if you bring laptop and want to work. After all it is a studio and not a cafe :) read more

My husband and I stopped by on 2/22 visiting from US. Oh my goodness best latte I've ever had. Barista took his time to make it and it was delicious! No bitter taste or burn taste. I tried to make it last longer that day by taking my time sipping it slowly and savor the taste. I'm also a tea drinker. I bought tea mix lavender with vanilla, and love tea mix of rose, lemongrass I think....this is my favorite. Will definitely return planning a trip for June/July. read more

It's a small coffee shop that put a lot of love into the decor. It's nice to go to a coffee shop that feels more at home than those super sleek hipster coffee shops. I do like my hipster coffee shops, however, it's nice to have a change like this in decor that sets the mood and was a creative inspiration when working on my zine. I had the matcha latte. It is a part gift shop of hand made items which is nice if you're looking to pick up a gift for someone. It is a bit of a way for me, therefore, I had to hit this place up on one of my days off but still a great personality and addition to the neighborhood. The gentleman who served me who I assume is the owner was super friendly and proud of his product. Prices are fair market value. read more
