While the freshness of the baguettes does vary from piping hot fresh to a few-hours-old, I'm still giving Hanco five stars for deliciousness, consistency, and a commendable devotion to the judicious inclusion of cilantro in each dish. The heat rating on the sanwiches has already been deftly explained by Claire B. The banh mi types also include a "classic" which has ham and Vietnamese pate. I like it, but it's a bit salty and fatty for me. My favorite is grilled chicken (I get it medium spicy). There's also a sardine version for those who need their Omega-3s. I work fairly near this shop. Well as near to this shop as any other, so when I found the reviews for this sandwich shop on yelp, I decided I would venture out and try it. Now I have always heard about how tasty Banh Mis can be, but I have never had the opportunity to have one. Learning that a Banh Mi sandwich shop was within walking distance of my job, put me in Banh MI mode. For the next couple of days at work, all I could think about was when I would walk over there and finally try these well liked sanwiches. I was finally able to make it down there last week, and I was not disappointed. Now I have never had any other Banh Mi sandwich to compare this with, so my opinon must be taken with a grain of salt, but! When I arrived there, I ordered a Vietnamese Iced Coffee, and a classic Sandwich. The Sandwich was tasty and filling. Definitely a good deal for the neighboorhood. The iced Coffee was sweet and tasty. When I finished my sandwich and gulped down as much of the sugary coffee as I could handle, I finally sat back and felt quite contented. I don't know when I will have the chance to get back there as there are many other shops I would like to try. But this was definitely a nice snack, and I am now a fan. read more

Recently, my boyfriend and I have been extremely obsessed with pho. It's perfect for winter (and,k let's just face it, every other single occasion), and I end up eating it at least twice a week. So from DC to NYC, I have eaten a LOT of pho. However, one bowl from Hanco's in Brooklyn Heights and I am absolutely hooked. It has the most amazing pho I've ever tasted. Just the perfect ratio of tender, thin-sliced beef, hearty soup, and noodles. Did I mention their Vietnamese coffee is spectacular? I am definitely going to be back. Believe the hype. =) read more

Out of all the Vietnamese restaurants I have been to, this is by far my favorite!! Between the sandwiches (white shredded chicken I prefer), pho soup, and rice vermicelli (one of my favorite dishes), they all taste fresh! I love trying new foods and the woman at the register was very helpful in helping me to decide what to try next. I have only had 2-3 drinks from here but they were great as well. I love Hancos. I used to live by their park slope location, and would be by the carroll gardens location during work. now, i live by their carroll gardens location, and work by the park slope one. I ordered the chicken sandwich ($4.50) spicy, and wasn't one bit disappointed. The bread was crispy on the outside, and soft on the inside. The grilled chicken was a mix of white and dark meat and pleasingly juicy. I did not care for the shear amount of daicon radish and carrots they put on the sandwich, but I'll ask them to go easy on that next time. I'll definitely be coming back for more. The only surprise occurred when I walked into a 'Vietnamese' sandwich shop and all the staff were speaking Chinese. See, I told you all NY is too cold for Vietnamese people. LOL. read more

Ever get the feeling that you absolutely must ingest a Vietnamese sandwich immediately or suffer the consequences? This condition affects many people (maybe even some of your friends and loved ones). I have been known to experience this feeling from time to time. Hanco's does a pretty good job of helping me out. If it were closer, I would go more often. I usually get the pork sandwich. The meat is tender and tasty - not dry like I've had in other similar sandwiches. The veggies are plentiful (but could use a little more pickling). The mayo level is good too. The bread is soft and chewy, and I'm ok with that. I was also impressed that when I ordered my sandwich spicy, they sure as hell made it actually spicy. Many places say spicy but really mean mild (which is not ideal for someone who looooves spicy food). Hanco's loaded up my sandwich with some tasty peppers that did the job. Good work! I love their grilled chicken soup. It is really tasty. However, their to-go soups are really a project. You literally have to "build" your soup. The broth comes in one container and the soup contents are in a separate container. I guess it wouldn't be a big deal for some. I had to check this spot out and compare it to my usual banh mi joint - which is Me and My Eggroll (not 'cause its the greatest but because its close to my house and reasonably cheap). Anyway, I almost left before ordering because there were these dorky guys whose extremely loud conversation alternated between the gentrification of DC and discussing which of the girls (who had just left) they thought was cute. Sweet relief when they sucked down their bubble teas and disappeared. I ordered the Classic and I think it was one of the best bahn mi's I've ever had. That sounds dirty, but anyway... Normally I get wierded out easily by the overly sweet or fatty BBQ pork some of these places use. But this stuff was amazing, the pate was good, not too greasy and the ground pork was spicy, plentiful and quite succulent. ok, if you order spicy... make sure you have some water with you. I downed a 24oz of water after i ate the sandwich. It was delicious with generous amount of grilled pork and pickled vegetables and greens. However, it's a bit pricy for a vietnamese sandwich on Cali standard. Great bubble tea, and tasty banh mi sandwiches. Boba has a great consistency and is sweet. Had the almond milk green tea which was more on the milky side but still good. Tried the chicken and pork banh mi sandwiches--both were good but the pork one was the definite winner. Spicy is not very spicy, although bits of the fresh jalapeño may have a kick. Why oh why did this place have to open only a few weeks before I moved out of the neighborhood? Amazingly fresh banh mi- the pork and the sardine banh mis are to die for. The baguettes are perfectly toasted, lending that nice crunch when you bite down, with the soft interior perfectly bringing out the crisp of daikon and carrots. The spring rolls here are good, and the boba is less than thrilling, but who cares? Come for the banh mi! read more

Hanco's, you have the best almond green milk tea I've had in New York. whoopee! I thought I'd never find my almond green milk tea that rivals Cha for Tea's quality. You do! I've missed the perfect combination of sweetness, jasmine/almond blend tea INCREDIBLY. In the city, Ten Ren and St. Alps donot suffice to satisfy my picky taste buds for my favorite tea combo. Sandwich: the classic sandwich comes with three different meats (WOW!)- roasted pork, Vietnamese ham, pate, and mayo, butter, cucumber, pickled carrots & daikon radish and cilantro on a toasted french baguette (the baguette is perfectly balanced, not too dry and not too toasty). Sometimes baguette breads from Viet sandwich shops stick to the roof of my mouth (annoying!) but Hanco's sandwiches do not. Simply, purely delicious! Thanks for an enjoyable meal. Decided to come here with a friend as he recommended this place for the best vietnamiese sandwich. I ordered my first vietnamiese grilled pork sandwich. I wanted to start off without spice but instead I got spicy which was fine. As I took my first bite from the first half of the sandwich, the grilled pork tasted delicious, the long bread and vegetables where crunchy and the sauce melted in my mouth like WOW! as I got to the middle of the sandwich, my mouth felt like as if it was on fire as the spices kicked in as it was pretty strong. So strong that my eyes where red from my friend's point of view, and I had to add the soy sauce paste in the sandwich just cool down the spiciness as well as something cold to drink. What an amazing experience it was as I finished my last bite of the sandwich. Overall it was excellent and delicious sandwich and it pretty much filled me up. 5/5 stars and would recommend to all of you the readers and friends. read more

Hanco's vs. Nicky's? At Hancos, I like their tofu sandwich. Spicy. I don't usually do a bubble tea as I like to pair it with a somewhat spicy ginger beer/ale from the deli on the corner. Now, if I am the mood to get my "pork" on, I like the 'classic' at Nickys better. I prefer the taste of their meat and the bread at Nickys and Hancos seems to be a bit heavy handed with the vegetables. As an aside, when I think back to the Smith street of the late-90's, I am sure I would have never imagined that one day my biggest problem would be deciding which Vietnamese sandwich shop I liked the best. read more

Just WOW, had an amazing vegetarian chicken Bahn Mi. The veggies were abundant and delicious, the bread warm and crunchy just like how I like it. I have never had vegetarian chicken and I was impressed, I would not miss chicken if I could get this everywhere. I also got the "real" chicken spring rolls, also delicious. The accompanying peanut sauce was one of the best peanut sauces I have had. I washed this all down with a Matcha Green bubble tea....YUM! Great Bahn MI! I have had the pork chop and the chicken and have not been disappointed. All the components fit PERFECTLY together. The flavors melt in your mouth in beautiful unison. The summer rolls (veggie) are cool, refreshing, and filling as well. The peanut dipping sauce on the side is the perfect balance. Feeding 4 people for $25 on a Saturday night is not a bad thing! How did I not know this place was just down the block?! I tried Hanco's for the first time the day after gorging myself at Xe May on Saint Marks (if you've never had bahn mi from Xe May, you must. Now.) Needless to say, my expectations were high. But after one bite of Hanco's Classic bahn mi, I was hooked! Hanco's makes theirs a bit differently than most- the pate and pickled veggies are all there, but the pork is actually ground and juicy rather than cold-cut style. Such a nice touch! I don't know how they marinade that pork but it's very flavorful. My one criticism is the distribution of veggies. Yes, I know this is me being a bit picky, but the carrots were right up front with the meat so by the time you get 3/4 of the way through, there are no more veggies. Simple, small menu, but to the point and delicious. We order here from work often during the spring. I LOVE...cannot express how much I LOVE the coconut Bubble Tea!! I don't know what they add to it, but it just had this absolutely delicious taste. I constantly crave it. I will say that there isn't much volume difference between their sizes..either that or they've just gotten my size wrong every time I order the larger one. The white meat chicken sandwich tastes fresh and the bread is my absolute favorite. (I'm a fan of any bread for Vietnamese sandwiches so that may not say too much.) Fellow Yelpers were right on about this place. It rocks. And it had two veggie options, hooray, a veggie chicken and a sardine(kinda semi-veggie) that are really fantastic. They use the right combo of pickles and marinades and mayo(which I tend not to like but liked here) and stuffing(be it meat or otherwise) and spices like fresh cilantro. The result is one tasty sandwich. The bread is not as crusty as the ones at Paris. You forgive them when you eat the whole shebang. I ordered the sardine one,which is one of the best sardine one sandwiches I've ever had) and the pork. Both get a rating as super yummy. This bahn mi tastes better the ones I've tasted in Manhattan's Chinatown and is worth a trip to Boerum Hill/Cobble Hill. Oh, Hanco's has corrected their strange past habit of putting veggies at one end and meat stuffing on the other. This has apparently flummoxed many Yelpers in the past. If my coworker were reading this--and she might be--she's going to be rolling her eyes hard at this review, because I am once again going to review an establishment based on a secondary menu item, rather than the premiere menu item. Yes, I am reviewing Hanco's based on their sardine sandwich. Here's why: the classic banh mi is a good thing. But it's also a thing that's hard to get wrong, in my opinion. There's the standard ingredients organized in the standard way, and diners are happiest when the banh mi conforms, rather than flouts, expectations. So better to try the menu item that allows a Vietnamese sandwich shop some flexibility. Like the sardine variation! At the banh mi joint in Park Slope (Lotus, I think?), the sardines are very nearly whole. Just nice, savory filets laying in some spicy sauce on a bun. Good. At Hanco's, the sardines are a little more mashed up with some spicy mayonnaise. That is also a good approach, although it means you have to each your sandwich quickly before the bread gets too soggy. So by my glancing estimation, Hanco's is good enough for me. read more

Omg this place is great! Their bubble tea tastes so good and milky. I of course got the coffee one & I loved it. Their Vietnamese sandwiches are to die for. My boyfriend & his nephew got the classic & I got the grilled chicken one. They taste so different but in a good way. Their grilled chicken tastes like teriyaki chicken since its Vietnamese. Very good. I got the "classic sandwich" consisting of pokr, Vietnamese ham, pate, mayo, cucumber, carrots and of course CILANTRO. It was delicious. And only $4.75. I got the medium spice, and it was not that spicy... so I'm sure it greatly depends on your chef. My two complaints are 1) it took around 8 minutes for my sandwich to come out. Seems a bit long for a sandwich. 2) the French baguette was slightly hard. I ordered at like 2:00... so I would assume they make a ton at 11:30 and don't remake until dinner time. I have never tried "Nick" so I can't compare. But this was a good little spot for sure. read more

(Had the pork sandwich) Pros: Meat is flavorful, just a bit charred, delicious. Bread is quality, crispy, yielding. Cons: They put a whole stalk of cilantro in a sandwich. The stalk is so fibrous that it's impossible to bite it; you just end up pulling a small tree out of your assembly on the second bite. Ditto for the meat; for whatever reason, it just doesn't cleave well. Meh: pickled bits weren't crunchy, but weren't soggy either. Pickle flavor was a refreshing contrast, but didn't really stand up to the pork. I have had better, but also much worse. Would eat again if I were in the neighborhood. read more

Somehow I've lived this long (and that's a pretty long time), and even honeymooned in Vietnam, without ever experiencing the yummy deliciousness of a banh mi. Thank goodness Hanco was here to relieve me of my virginity. So good we dined here three times during our stay in Carroll Gardens - and we felt oh-so-cool when we were informed that Hanco's was the subject of a This American Life piece recently. The banh mis were excellent, served on warm, fresh rolls with the freshest of fillings, and the vermicelli salads were light and perfectly seasoned. Everything is made to order, and they have a great selection of magazines for those who decide to dine in. If I lived in the nabe I'd be a regular for sure - and now that I've been turned on to banh mi, I can't wait to find the Hanco's equivalent in SF. read more

Be warned: spicy means SPICY.
