UPDATE: I've been back 2 more times to try the original and the sardine bahn mis, both good in different ways. Will I be able to squeeze in one more trip? Tasty with a capital T! Sure it's 2 dollars more at a steeping $4.25, but I feel like the quality of the meat and the freshness of the bread & veggies is well worth it. Because of my fear of questionable meat (due to some unpleasant experiences with these french vietnamese sandwiches), I actually ordered a rice vermicelli bowl with tofu..which was good. I stole a couple bites from my friend's pork chop banh mi and was pleasantly surprised. Hot, perfectly spiced - salty sweet - and orgasmic! Wow, I thought Baoguette couldn't get touched - but this place comes close, maybe surpassing. Summer rolls w shrimp are good - as they are everywhere. But the winner is the Classic banh mi. It doesn't have as dirty of a char as Baoguette, but it's equally great, and perhaps more moist. Also, the bread is nicely baked yet soft. I'm definitely gonna have to come back. Yum. read more

Not bad at all. I went here today with a friend and got the grilled pork Bahn Mi and a Honeydew bubble tea. My friend got the beef broth Pho with beef and Taro bubble tea. My meal was really good, the pork was nice and meaty with a good amount of sauce, the bread was toasted to perfection and I loved the way the daikon/cucumbers/carrots tasted. My only complaint is that the sandwich could definitely be better constructed. As Peter D. said, you definitely have to eat V-style. I had the veggies coming out of one end of the sandwich falling to my plate and got a huge mouthful of the ones that didn't fall but with no meat when I took a bite the "normal" way. And $7 for one is kinda steep, but I get that they have to pay employees, rent and other stuff. The bubble tea was pretty good, I got so much green tea flavor that for me it competed with the flavor of honeydew, so it could've been a bit stronger. However, I did have some delish honeydew burps* for a few hours after I was done, so I guess that's a plus? My friend loved his Pho, I thought it was pretty good too. His taro bubble tea was seriously good, it was so creamy it was on a low-grade milkshake level. When I go back, definitely getting it. Plus we scored those plush seats by the window, and were comfy af! That's how everyone should eat their food- in a nice, plush chair. *If you like fruity burps, this is the one for you. Been here many times since it's a block away from my apt. Their grilled chicken is one of my favorites.. whether it's in pho, banh mi or on rice. I prefer the sandwiches over anything else but the pho usually hits the spot when you need a post-drinking or hangover cure. If I had it yesterday.... and I'm interested in eating it again right now...does that vouch for it's tastiness? Probably. I've had Vietnamese sandos a couple times before but these were some of the better ones. Differently, they were on toasted bread rather than on crusty baguette. Meat selections are pretty typical but include a few more options like white chicken mean or dark chicken meat. The inside is pretty sparse but whatever it's not Starbucks you're in and out quickly. Or just grab n go that sucker. Didn't try the bubble tea but almost everyone was ordering it which must mean something. The one thing I didn't love was that the vegetables were a bit less pickled than I've had in the past providing that necessary contrast to the salty meat. At 5.75 it's not the least expensive bahn mi I've had but it was filling and tasty so the price is right. Will definitely re-visit. read more

I am newly addicted to Banh Mi sandwiches. I think this place is a little better than the place up on Atlantic (and closer to my place, so maybe I'm biased). You can't beat 5.25 for a delicious sandwich. And they deliver (with a $10 minimum) I was so happy to find a place with bubble tea nearby too! The BEST tofu bahn mi, anywhere. Have to stop by at least once a week. The tofu is SOFT (not fried or firm) and melts in with the bread & sriracha, and combined with the toppings is just amazing, taste as well as texturally. A+ (It's addicting). read more

Definitely a fan of this place! Came here this past weekend with my girlfriend and friend to find the place totally packed! We ordered our food quickly and painlessly, and were able to grab a seat without any issues. The food came out quickly, too! I had ordered a grilled chicken rice entree, and my girlfriend ordered the shredded chicken sandwich. I personally love this kind of stuff, and was already setting my expectations pretty high! The rice entree bowl is about the side of a traditional ramen bowl, half filled with salad, half with rice, topped with some cabbage slaw and your protein. It's a pretty big serving for the price, which I'm totally a fan of, especially considering the options in the area. The chicken, unfortunately wasn't the best I ever had. It tasted almost like a kind of better-made mall food court chicken, but the real taste maker was in the rice, salad, and different sauces available. My girlfriend had the shredded chicken sandwhich, but was a little let down to see that it wasn't so much shredded, but just cut up into slightly smaller chunks then what I had received. More bland then the grilled chicken, the sandwich was good, but nothing impressive. The bubble tea we all got was excellent, though. Definitely some of the best I've had, for sure. I love that they do warm bubble tea, and their menu is pretty huge, too! I'd definitely come back here again, but would totally order something else. Very disappointed with this spot. Was one of my favorite spots in the area precovid but the staff and food quality changed. The staff cooked their food first and sat eating while my order took 20 mins for a rice entree and a sandwich. My order was brought out with the person that ordered 15 mins after my order. Also, the quality and quantity of food decreased which doesn't justify the price increase. I used to order from here all the time - only dish I really get is the grilled chicken rice vermicelli, and the summer rolls. They recently moved to a new location on Smith Street - I've only ever ordered in, but their last spot didn't even have a kitchen; they would heat up the dishes in a microwave. I've been here before and enjoyed their bubble tea and had a pretty 5 star experience but yesterday was a bit different. The weather was kinda meh so my friend and I decided to get some pho. The employees there are really unorganized and helped other people before us even though we arrived first. We ordered, no smiles or anything but whatever, i'm not that bothered by it. We got our food and went to the second floor, it was pretty cozy and the pho was DELICIOUS. After we finished our meal we decided to get some bubble tea, i specifically asked for it to be sweetened but lo and behold when we left the store, my bubble tea was bland. :( At least the tapioca balls made up for the lack of sweetness. So the food is a 5. Delicious. Go there all the time. The staff is pretty unfriendly, never smiles or engages in small talk. And that usually doesn't bother me. But today, I asked for "some" hot sauce, and the young woman went and got me one packet. I asked for "a couple more" and she gave me one more. My husband loves hot sauce, so I knew he'd need at least 2 for his sandwich, while I'd use one for my salad. So I asked nicely, "I'm sorry to bother, but if you could get me 1 or 2 more, that'd be great." She said, "No." I asked, "No? You can't give me 1 or 2 more?" And she replied, "cost extra." I said, "Listen, I have 2 meals here, 2 bubble teas, and spend $30 here nearly every day, you can't give me 1 or 2 more hot sauce packets?" She said, "You can buy it from the market and keep it at home." I have it at home, I said, but my husband is in the hospital and I bring him one of your sandwiches, or pho, nearly every day. She turned around and walked into the kitchen. I was about to ask for the manager, when I saw my son's face, red with embarassment. He thought I was being a "karen". Pretty good for a local spot to get banh mi. Good soft bread and decent amount of meat. Their pho isn't the best I ever had, but it's alright. The classic banhmi was good with fresh ingredients. Nothing too out of the ordinary there. What surprised me was how good the skim milk original boba tea was! I'm accustomed to the cloying sweetness of condensed milk that the skim milk was a very refreshing change and you got to actually taste the tea. read more

I have a (potentially) embarrassing confession to make about Hanco--I have yet to actually try the banh mi!! I have, however, tried to rice vermicelli dishes several times and am a huge fan. I know that Vietnamese is kind of the new Thai, and I'm a total follower! Sometimes I just need some delicious noodles/fresh veggies/pork in my life! The boyfriend and I have ordered a few times and have always been pleased. Food arrives quickly and in large amounts (hello dinner and lunch tomorrow!) and I like that the hot sauce is always provided. I add just enough to keep my mouth tingling, and then dig in to the delicious combination. Hanco's has yummy banh mi sandwiches, a good chicken salad, good spring rolls, and bubble tea in a relaxed atmosphere with outdoor sidewalk seating. Mix in good company which of course is BYO, and you've got a perfect filling-but-light dinner on a hot hot HOT summer evening. While the freshness of the baguettes does vary from piping hot fresh to a few-hours-old, I'm still giving Hanco five stars for deliciousness, consistency, and a commendable devotion to the judicious inclusion of cilantro in each dish. The heat rating on the sanwiches has already been deftly explained by Claire B. The banh mi types also include a "classic" which has ham and Vietnamese pate. I like it, but it's a bit salty and fatty for me. My favorite is grilled chicken (I get it medium spicy). There's also a sardine version for those who need their Omega-3s. The goi cuon (summer rolls) are top-notch. Hanco also offers bubble tea. I recommend lychee. Ask for it warm when it's cold outside. read more

I work fairly near this shop. Well as near to this shop as any other, so when I found the reviews for this sandwich shop on yelp, I decided I would venture out and try it. Now I have always heard about how tasty Banh Mis can be, but I have never had the opportunity to have one. Learning that a Banh Mi sandwich shop was within walking distance of my job, put me in Banh MI mode. For the next couple of days at work, all I could think about was when I would walk over there and finally try these well liked sanwiches. I was finally able to make it down there last week, and I was not disappointed. Now I have never had any other Banh Mi sandwich to compare this with, so my opinon must be taken with a grain of salt, but! When I arrived there, I ordered a Vietnamese Iced Coffee, and a classic Sandwich. The Sandwich was tasty and filling. Definitely a good deal for the neighboorhood. The iced Coffee was sweet and tasty. When I finished my sandwich and gulped down as much of the sugary coffee as I could handle, I finally sat back and felt quite contented. I don't know when I will have the chance to get back there as there are many other shops I would like to try. But this was definitely a nice snack, and I am now a fan. read more

Recently, my boyfriend and I have been extremely obsessed with pho. It's perfect for winter (and,k let's just face it, every other single occasion), and I end up eating it at least twice a week. So from DC to NYC, I have eaten a LOT of pho. However, one bowl from Hanco's in Brooklyn Heights and I am absolutely hooked. It has the most amazing pho I've ever tasted. I love Hancos. I used to live by their park slope location, and would be by the carroll gardens location during work. now, i live by their carroll gardens location, and work by the park slope one. It was sooooooo cold out and I was HANGRY! I've been wanting to try Vietnamese food and saw this place so I stopped in. I ordered the grilled chicken Pho which was perfect! Huge though. Geez, I could've fed my family of four with this meal. The broth was tasty and the basil included gave it such a great flavor. This was my first time having Pho and I have to say I'll order this again for sure. The place has amble space which is great. I ordered the chicken sandwich ($4.50) spicy, and wasn't one bit disappointed. The bread was crispy on the outside, and soft on the inside. The grilled chicken was a mix of white and dark meat and pleasingly juicy. I did not care for the shear amount of daicon radish and carrots they put on the sandwich, but I'll ask them to go easy on that next time. I'll definitely be coming back for more. Ever get the feeling that you absolutely must ingest a Vietnamese sandwich immediately or suffer the consequences? This condition affects many people (maybe even some of your friends and loved ones). I have been known to experience this feeling from time to time. Hanco's does a pretty good job of helping me out. If it were closer, I would go more often. I usually get the pork sandwich. The meat is tender and tasty - not dry like I've had in other similar sandwiches. The veggies are plentiful (but could use a little more pickling). The mayo level is good too. The bread is soft and chewy, and I'm ok with that. I was also impressed that when I ordered my sandwich spicy, they sure as hell made it actually spicy. Many places say spicy but really mean mild (which is not ideal for someone who looooves spicy food). Hanco's loaded up my sandwich with some tasty peppers that did the job. Good work! This place is great for biking over and picking up a quick meal to go. Definitely a place I plan of visiting more often... read more

Everyone knows Hanco's around here because the place is solid. My review is going to be simple and straight to the point. It's the mock chicken. If you're going to offer it as a vegetarian alternative, please make it taste good, otherwise it ruins your otherwise beautiful bahn mi. I don't know if they microwaved this stuff but it was just nasty. I could and should have returned it but was short on time and needed to eat. It was bland, had the texture of warm, soggy bread and just shouldn't be consumed. The taro bubble tea I got without sugar was definitely perfectly unsweetened for my taste, though. read more

I like this place, Ive been coming here for years, and the workers, behind the counter are always friendly. That said, the experience I had today, left me feeling 100% ripped off and upset. I do not expect this place to be anything that its not, and I will say the service was not horrible... the food, and the dinning area, and the amount I paid, was so horrible, that I was compelled to do something... like, complain on yelp. Basically I showed up and order PHO beef soup, and i small coffee. Which cost about $15. Its a bit pricey I thought but, whatever, I then made my way to the bathroom because I had a full bladder, only to find that the bathroom was closed ie, broken or whatever... I had just paid, so I couldnt just leave and go somewhere else... so I ended up leaving Hanco's and walked a half a block away to a japanese restaurant ... and had to go through the whole thing... with them telling me a cant use the bathroom, then saying I'll buy a bottle of water ($2), and then looking at me weird... etc etc, so I take care of that annoying thing and get back to Hanco's... My bowl of pho is waiting for me. I pick the tray up and find a table. Once I sit down and begin to eat,,, first impression is there are a big pile of noodles, obviously the cheapest version of rice noddles, and they are all stuck together because of course they pre set each bowl with noodles just sitting there until you order it... so, the noodles end up just clumping together... well considering I paid $15, Id like to get a semi-decent bowl not a instant ramen microwave feel of $1 crap.. anyways, I'm honestly still trying to relax and just enjoy the Pho... I then realize, out of the whole bowl... there are literally ... 1 normal size piece of beef, and about 4 small little shreds of beef... then its only all the stuck together noodles, and the side of veggies they give you. If this was a $5 bowl of noodles at some crappy place, I would understand, but again I paid $11 for this (plus 4 for the small coffee)... a bunch of gross glued together cheap noodles and a few shreds of throw-away meat? So I again, tried to just relax and eat the 4 sheds of beef they gave me... but I just cant believe someone would actually give that to someone ....and if they gave that do me... Im sure they basically give this same version to most people that eat there... its a total rip off, its the worse bowl of pho, Ive ever had in my life... without a doubt. So I know there isnt much I can do, I dont want to bother asking for my money back... when I finish my 4 shreds of meat and a bite of the gross noodles, I go to the counter and ask to talk with a manager, at least I can politely tell them, my opinion, ... so the woman I speak to, I as if there is a manager, and she looks confused etc, so I politely ask again... is there... or is there not a manager ... its a simple question... finally she tells me he isnt there. So I just leave. Anyways... Ive never had a meal where I felt it was just total garbage... which I had to pay... basically normal prices for. Its was 100% gross crap. Im sure everyone eating there is fine with it... but I dont understand how a place can call beef pho soup, if just a few small flakes of crappy meat in it actual Beef Pho... and charge $11.
