A decent place for sushi in Auburn. Nothing fantastic, nothing terrible...just pretty good. I've never had bad service here, it's usually just super slow. I often come by myself when I'm driving through Auburn for work which always seems to confuse them. Last time I went they asked me about 3 times if I was waiting for someone. I have yet to eat the food... this review is solely based on service. Twice I have attempted to eat here and have been turned away. Apparently they close their kitchen 40 minutes before the listed closing time. I was told to "come back earlier next time because the kitchen was closing in 10 minutes" or I could order to go... It was less than 1 hour before closing, but they welcomed us in for dinner no problem. Our waitress was very friendly and welcoming. Food was excellent quality and taste. We had the beef teriyaki bento box with tempura. Also had the crunch roll and the spider roll. Everything was fresh and tasty. We appreciated the large bowl of miso soup which we shared. Very flavorful. We also appreciated 2 shrimp in the tempura:) We can't wait to go back and try the sukiyaki. One of my all-time favorites. You know this is old school Japanese food if they serve it! Sandwiched between Auburn's Nectar Cafe and Tango Yogurt is this little Japanese restaurant. Glossy red tables make a small runway up to a black door surrounded by tan bricks partially shaded by a red awning with lanterns hanging delicately above. "Hanami Sushi" displays itself in a burgundy italic font above a long horizontal window where a bunch of little knickknacks can be seen. Inside is a tight space of a few tables to the immediate left and right by the front windows, and light-colored wooded sushi bar area that stretches towards the back where the kitchen is shaded by curtains. It's decked to the nines with lanterns, lucky buddhas, lamented displays of fish names in Japanese, beer adverts, calendars, paintings, and other things I'm sure I missed. I nabbed a seat at the far end of the sushi bar where the fish is partially hidden behind some not-very-clean cloudy and smudged glass. I received a sticky menu that looks like it has been through years of use without a full clean or even replacement and filled with too many dishes that it actually was a tad overwhelming. I never knew that was possible. I went with a tried-and-true bento box to get a sense of a good chunk of their food as well as a dragon roll. From there I observed some questionable restaurant behavior and realized that this place also needs a deep clean. For one, the mirror behind the sushi chef was absolutely filthy with liquid spots that dried out and the counter itself could've used a good coat of bleach.. Just many things that like clean until a close inspection. I saw a lot of food go into the microwave. Edamame. Potstickers (even my own I spied). Someone's entire plate. I saw a lot of heating/reheating action and wondered if the other customers knew, since that does affect the taste/quality of food. The roll itself was a beautiful long role of multi-color fish, tobiko, and a creamy sauce. Add a bit of spicy tuna, and this was actually a pretty good roll. It was creamy, spicy, crunchy, and simply tasted great fish-wise. The bento box...not so much. Mine was to come with tonkatsu, gyoza (considered a whole entree option, not included like others), and salted mackerel. After a quick miscommunication and receiving a teriyaki-less salmon filet, I received a grilled piece of off-white fish that just reeked. And this isn't just a fish's natural grilled smell, but one of as if it has been sitting in a compartment stewing in funky fish juices. Taste-wise, it was a bland piece of fish neither salted nor sauced at all. Unfortunately, other parts of the box didn't fair too well either. The tonkastu (a panko-breaded fried pork cutlet) had a crispy fried shell exterior, but had tough-and-stringy pork that couldn't be rescued by the tangy and citrusy katsu sauce. The gyoza was a disappointment even if I didn't see it get nuked before being transferred to the box. The outside lost its fried crispiness and the filling inside was watery. Taste-wise it was okay. A mild pork and vegetable mix with a side of tangy soy-sauce-like sauce, but nothing to really jump out of my seat in excitement for. Funny enough, the best bit was the salad that seemingly accidentally mixed with the accompanying ginger. While a bit dressing-heavy, it was a nice sweet creamy dressing that contrasted well with the pickled and bright ginger. Overall, just a disappointment. I really hoped they would bring their A-game here as one of the only Japanese places in Auburn. While the roll was decent, the dishes were just bad. They lacked flavor, it lacked freshness, texture was all over the place, and the place lacked cleanliness. It's a pass from me at a 1. read more

Our orders should have arrived faster because that evening, we were the only people in there for the first 20 minutes we were there. -bento box salad had....corn?!? Tasted good but unexpected for Japanese cuisine -rice was a bit too mushy/sticky for two rolls. Didn't taste like Sushi vinegar was used -only complimentary thing you get is water. Some places offer free edamame, or miso soup with every order. Only thing you're getting complimentary here is water! You're paying extra for everything else. -appeared to be no specials: no discounts on rolls on certain days or times, all rolls seemed to be $2-$7 more than a similar roll ordered at a Sushi restaurant. Alcohol Drinks also seem to be the same price no matter when/what. -6 pieces of just Sashimi cost about $13! Only 6 pieces! Most places would give 10 pieces if they were charging $13. I really enjoyed being treated to dinner here last night. I would not seek this place out again because the cost is way too disproportionate for the food/value received. PS: Want to note there is a Sushi restaurant in San Francisco that charges $10 for 6 pieces of very high quality, fatty Sashimi. my fiancé and I adore Hanami and always are treated so well by the wait staff. I have an allergy and they're always happy to accommodate that. We love the Mt. Fuji and always look forward to it as well as the spicy BBQ albacore (not for the faint of heart). I only wish they had soda on tap as opposed to the cans because some of their dishes are a bit spicy. This place closes at 2:30 P.M to prepare for dinner service, which starts at 4:30 P.M. My girlfriend and I went in yesterday at around 2:00 P.M and were given a rude greeting, with the manageress coming to our table and saying "We close at 2:30, so next time get here earlier." That's already a bad start. She hands us our menus and leaves. One minute later she comes back, no water or anything, and asks if we're ready to order. We were not, so we said no. She then impatiently and sarcastically responds "Take your time, take your time!" Her vile attitude put us off so much that we got up and left then and there. I don't think we came in at a particularly bad time; 30 minutes is ample for the kitchen to make us our food before closing. The manageress had no conceivable reason to treat us like that. It's a shame really because I used to enjoy going to this restaurant frequently, and now I'll never set foot in there again. The are on the wall is authentic old school. Very pleasant to look at and doesn't distract from your meal. The menu is vast. There are many traditional items and some local favorites. The boat and bento box are must haves. The 3 piece bento box comes in a huge boat and is so cute. I wished I had ordered it. All dinners come with soup, salad, ect. The people behind us ordered the love boat. Amazing. You need to have 3 hungry friends to finish it. It looked incredible. The presentation is to die for. I'm a big fan of Miso soup. I ordered 2 bowls. I liked that it wasn't served too hot. This was the first time I have gotten it with a Chinese soup spoon. First of all this is not a one star review- it is in the negatives- you just can't leave a review without giving it a star! Wow- I don't even know where to begin...worst experience dining out in a loooooong time. To start, we sat on the patio and were excited to try this place in Auburn! The food server started out friendly and we were looking forward to trying the lunch Bento Box special! We began to eat lunch when we look down and see a HUGE cockroach crawling below our feet and onto the base of the table- at that point we informed the waitress and asked to be moved to another patio table! Not only were our appetites totally diminished by the fact that there was a COCKROACH , but it was totally dismissed by the food server! We told her and she simply stepped on it and LEFT IT THERE- half dead and legs still moving around.... We couldn't believe our eyes... There was no attempt to remove the half dead cockroach (about 2 inches long ) from the very middle of the patio ground! We were left to continue our lunch with the cockroach still in sight. ...AND more people were taken to that very table to dine, with the cockroach at their feet and nobody informed them! We were completely disgusted, the waitress never came back, and a manager came over to ask us how things were going. We let her know we were very dissatisfied with the choice to leave the cockroach right next to us in plain sight of our food and our experience had been ruined .We demanded that somewhat of a discount be taken off of the bill, to compensate for our lunch being completely ruined. The Manager came back to our table and had informed us that the owner of the restaurant agreed to take 20% off, which was literally $2.50 off the entire bill. Soo grossed out with everything , the cockroach, the service, the lack of health and safety! Ughhh don't waste your money here! Ordered the Chirashi bowl. 7 pieces, rice, garnish. Not $15 worth as fish was small and rice was abundant. Water tastes nasty (chlorine) taste. I went to pay, waiters says no AMEX and owners that said special time was no where around. Waitress is calling to confirm but no answer. I left paying with my debit card so I can get reimbursed.
