The owner Tom had to take a leave for family reasons but he is back now and recovering from the damage suffered to his business in his absence. Great food as always, but the service has gone down in quality at a consistent rate for the last few years. I think the "overhiring" of inexperienced high schoolers, and lack of staff who has the experience has created the imbalance. When we went to dinner tonight, one of our waitresses (definitely younger) was very slow.. we were told to sit anywhere, and asked if we wanted waters... waited 25 minutes in silence and never even got the water. After another 5 minutes, the same newer girl asked if we already ordered?? We had been completely forgotten about. She asked a second time for water, which came rather quickly. I have never experienced such slow service, the quiet, empty restaurant made it surprising that it took 30 minutes to get waters and an order in. read more

My new favorite place when I visit Auburn! These days, Ninja Sushi is offering limited indoor seating with quite an outdoor set up. Tables inside are 6 feet apart with hand sanitizer on each table. It was Halloween when we arrived just before 2:30pm. My friend & I were the only ones inside along with amazing staff. I have always loved watching food art, so chose to sit at one of their table near the sushi bar(the sushi bar is open btw). We ordered a small Sapporo bottle, with a small hot sake, along with one Oyster Shooter. That Oyster Shooter was delicious! I just need to remember to order it warm with a meduim spicy.. that's how I like it, at least!! For lunch we ordered The Lion King, Suzy Q, and The Lobster Crossing. Their Lobster Crossing tastes like magic and is a favorite of mine and with any guest I bring! It is a sushi roll with bits of lobster on top, drizzled with their sauce then baked. The Lion King is another one of my favorites with baked salmon on top. The Suzy Q has fresh (raw) red tuna on top... the best part is how fresh all their ingredients are!! I love a good sushi restaurant and Ninja Sushi in Auburn is like a sushi haven! They are my number one choice in Placer County! The staff was also amazing and attentive. My buddy and I were getting drinks and shooting pool nearby then hit us that we were hungry. So we decided to give this place a try. It was kinda late on a Saturday and there was absolutely no one besides us in there which kind of weirded me out. We ordered some asahi beer, warm saki and four sushi rolls. Don't remember the names unfortunately. We lined them up between us and just kind of had at it buffet style. Some of the bites were quite good but then other bites were super mushy and not very fresh. It was kind of hit or miss, but fine for a late night grab after a few drinks. Great, fresh sushi! They have tamari and communicate well about gluten free substitutions. Service is a-ok. I do wish they made the ambience more cozy or traditional or inviting. I hate to say this but we ORIGINALLY went to Auburn for the pizzeria next door but we were on a time crunch and the wait was going to be too long, so we came to Ninja Sushi because it was empty (still wondering why). The food we ordered was GOOD: monster roll, chicken teriyaki roll, vegetable tempura, and spicy edamame. Our waitress was very nice and fast. She only forgot the wife's spicy mayo BUT no biggie. Our only gripe would be with the temperature in there, it was a little on the warm side but to be fair, the weather is just now starting to change. So, all in all, a good little sushi spot. If you don't care about if you're seafood is wild or farm raised or what's the freshest then this place is perfect for you. I like to know what is the freshest and what is wild and that is what I order. The problem is the chefs don't speak English. They have lots of great young people working there but they don't seem to understand how some people think it's important to know what they're eating. This is the second time I've gone in I waited about five months and the same exact thing happened. No answers except for oh it's it's all wild it's all fresh! Well that's absolutely impossible. The sushi chef closest to us kind-of embarrassingly chuckled when I asked for some pretty basic stuff. Toro, salmon belly, hamachi belly, sweet shrimp, etc. nothing crazy. Our party of 4 dined at Ninja Sushi on a Saturday evening and we ordered the "Ninja Boat" along with some additional items. Our server was working the floor by herself at the time (although the owner and/or manager was there and sitting at the front not helping at all). The server accidentally thought we ordered the "Ninja Family Boat". I can understand how the mistake would happen and, honestly, they probably need to change the names of those 2 boats to avoid future confusion. With that said, when things started to arrive, we were slightly confused as something seemed off, but we also didn't receive all the items that come with the "Ninja Family Boat" so despite our confusion we didn't ask questions. In hindsight, that was our mistake and I own that. When we got the bill it was obviously much higher than expected. When I asked the owner/manager about it and pointed out that we hadn't actually received everything in the higher priced boat, she got incredibly defensive and said it was up to the server to decide what to do because the server would have to pay out of pocket for the mistake. As someone who has spent half my life working in restaurants I was appalled that they would make their servers pay for honest mistakes (especially when it would be so easy to make as the boats are virtually named the same thing and the server was working the floor by herself with very little support or help). I have never in all the years I've worked in a restaurant had someone tell a customer that or treat their staff in that manner. I was, of course, totally uncomfortable with the server having to pay the difference. She did the best she could and had given good service despite the mistake. I told the owner I would pay the full amount despite not ordering that item or receiving the full item anyway, but that I couldn't in good conscience return to the restaurant. It's too bad as my husband and I really liked going there. After much back and forth she begrudgingly agreed to give me 10% off the boat, but I still just can't support a business that treats their customers AND employees so horribly. Went here with my daughter for dinner. It was delicious. We shared two rolls. Jay's special and the Ninja. Both were very fresh with good flavor. We got two appetizers. The Fireballs and the Dynamite. They were good but seemed kind of like the same thing. The only thing I would want improved was the spice level. When I order spicy things I like it pretty hot. None of these were very spicy at all. Good thing there was Wasabi - yum. I will be back to try more items for sure! read more

I give it 2 stars because the food wasn't horrible but the customer experience was one of the worst I've ever had! Let's unpack this... Our normal sushi place was closed so we took a gamble on a super large take out order...happened to be on the day of a big bicycle race...super exciting but impossible to get into the restaurant. Had to park and hike for blocks. I mentioned that it would have been nice if they could have mentioned this, and they said this wasn't their responsibility! I said no...just good customer service. And then... My bill was over $200 and when I asked for an itemized bill, you would think that I was accusing them of theft! In fact, the accounting was incorrect...just off by about $10... AND they had substituted masago for tobiko (at the tobiko price) and when I questioned them, the woman at the cash register (owner? manager?) said that "most people don't know the difference" and when I turned to the sushi chef he said "most people prefer masago but don't know it" Unreal!!! I had ordered the tobiko with quail egg and was informed that they only had 3, not the 4 I ordered and since they had put them on masago instead of tobiko, wanted to know if I wanted them to "scrape them off of the masago and put them on ones with tobiko"!!! Of course I said no and she adjusted the bill which should have been $13.50 plus tax and she took $10 off and stonewalled me when I asked for it to be corrected. At this point, I was incredulous and one of their young employees standing at the cash register, started calling me names and telling me what a horrible person I was for asking what I had paid for and accused me of harassing the cashier...just asking for correct pricing! This was a surreal experience. Needless to say, I will never order from them again and recommend that they completely educate their staff on customer service if they wish to remain in business. Something bad has happened to what USED to be our favorite sushi restaurant in Auburn. Placed a to-go order, told 20 minutes. By the time I drove away, it was 45 minutes. Why? Because we were given someone else's food. Fortunately, only drove a short distance and opened boxes to check. Went back, got order re made. Got home, no ginger, no wasabi, and the cold sashimi was in the same box as the overcooked (burnt) hamachi kama. The kicker? The wrong order I drove away with, opened and touched was given to the people waiting in the chairs by the door (!) won't be ordering/eating there again! read more

Slow service... server sitting at the bar while sucking on a lollipop while we wait 20 minutes for a menu and some water. They don't seem to care about the patrons. It's like a weird warp of the twilight zone ... Some manager type marching around... missing everything not happening ... like the stuff that needs management. The food is not always the same... even though I keep ordering the same thing because it sounds good. Very inconsistent. Mangos were not ripe this time, hot food was served cold.... I have visited this place 4 times, hoping for something that I guess it just wont be... The ambiance is ok... it's dark. Noisy. Not great. Cafe style with poor lights. The Green Muscles are good... except they forgot to bring me my order until after we were done eatting. I'd probably go back for the Green Muscles.... Just because they were so good... but they too were cold because they forgot them on the counter for 15 min until they got cold. Worst sushi experience of our lives!!!! Not only was the food awful and tasted like it was spoiled but our daughter who loves sushi wouldn't even eat her simple California roll. When we ate a bite to taste our dinner and realized it was bad, we just offered to pay half the bill (even though our meal was inedible) the waitress refused our offer and told my husband that she would call the police on us if we didn't pay the full bill. The police were called and were shocked when they arrived and were informed by my husband that we still offered to pay half the bill even though the food was spoiled and the rolls had also been sitting on the counter for half an hour before being served to us. We should have walked out at that point but we are at least courteous enough to make sure the police knew that the fish was bad and we were not going to risk being sick due to negligence of the restaurant. It was our first and LAST time at this dive and we will make sure to tell everyone we meet, never waste their time or money at Ninja Sushi in Auburn California!!! We are still appalled that they called the police after we made it clear the food was bad and still offered to pay half the bill after only eating a peace of each roll. The hours online are not accurate. The hours online are what is printed on the door, however, those are not accurate either. You have to walk up to the door to read the hours written on the white square, which contradicts both what is printed on the door and online. This was quite frustrating, but I waited and hoped the food would be worth it. Big mistake. The host took about 5 call in orders before seating me. The roll I ordered was sloppy and had way too much sauce. The ginger was rancid. Overall a terrible experience and I will not be coming back. read more

As I've become more and more fond of sushi, I'd have to say that this place is my favorite in Auburn for sushi. I'd stated that I liked a different local business in another Yelp review, but I've changed my thinking. The roll I got today was the Bubble Bubble-it was delicious and filling. Deep fried asparagus, avocado, cucumber with crabmeat on top and all the proper additions. The waitress was a doll, the sushi chef (owner) is super friendly, quick and always has ESPN on (win). I had some good recommendations for a Mango Roll and Lemon roll, and I'd like to get a little more adventurous and try other menu items one of these nights when I can enjoy some Saki ;) Right on, guys! Let me start by saying that the staff are wonderful. They are attentive and represent the absolute highest standard in service. Now let's get to the "meat" of it. This is where things get a bit fishy. The meat is some what on the lower side. It certainly wasn't dangerous, but not at the standard upheld by other sushi restaurants in the area. Most of the rolls are built around a base of shrimp and artificial crab. Diversity of flavors is relatively low. They really utilize sauces to mask this lack of quality, and it often works to varying levels of success. Some of the sauces however, are a bit too much for me. They are not subtle in the least bit. In conclusion, if you're fine with deep fried rolls with lots of sauce built around the same base of shrimp and rice then this place is fast and friendly. read more

We came for dine-in to a relaxing dinner. Seating was available indoor or outdoor- we were feeling nostalgic so we sat inside. The menu had a great variety of appetizers, sushi, and hot dishes (rice bowls and soups). We opted for the stuffed jalapeños, sashimi, a special roll: ninja king, and a monster roll. The stuffed jalapeños are delicious!!! We order them from every restaurant that serves them and we both agreed that the texture and flavors are on point. It's not necessarily a stuffed jalapeño, but more of an appetizer stuffed WITH jalapeño and crab. Super delish. The fish was all very buttery and fresh. The rolls were good and filled with a generous portion of fish. Both rolls were too big to fit in one bite, although we tried. Flavors were fresh and clean. Service was pleasant and consistent.
