Seen mixed reviews. Decided to give it a shot. It was *very* good! We both got the Happy Family lunch. Hot & Sour soup was good, not overly peppered like a lot of them I've had. Plates came quickly. Shrimp, scallops, pork, chicken and vegetables in a great sauce. Cooked very well, seafood not turned to rubber as it's commonly served Just the smell when it came. Fried rice was good. Love this place!!!!! I love Mindy, and the rest of the staff. Tonight's orange chicken was perfection. The hot and sour was devine as usual and the rice was excellent. On 2/14/23 my wife had to call several times to get someone to answer. When they finally answered she was put on hold for 10 minutes (on the counter). She kept saying "hello" hoping someone would check the phone. After 10 minutes the employee hung up the phone without checking if someone was on the line. My wife called back and was able to place our order and was told 45 minutes. I arrived in 45 minutes to pick up our order. After 20 minutes of excuses and telling me my order was next, I set my timer for 10 minutes. During this time, I heard the employee telling other employees not to worry about the customers since they are "emotional" because it's Valentine's Day. My timer goes off and I walked out of that place for the last time. I have never felt so disrespected and not valued in all my life. Not even a call back with an apology. This place has changed in the last about 6 months. Food quality has dropped but we've tried them again hoping things would improve and now this. A note to this business and its owner...bad news spreads exponentially faster than good news (Customer Service 101). In one day 20 people have heard our story and now this post. We had a to go order. We ordered two rices, received one. Also ordered two chow mien, one crunchy and another regular. The crunchy one was weird. Everything we got tasted burnt and was tainted black as shown in the photos. As I sat inside waiting for my food (was told it would be 10 min wait, walked around for 15 to come back and wait an additional 10). I knew it was a risk to try a new spot, but this was such a bummer. read more

Worst place I've tried in Penn Valley...had the Fragrant shrimp, sauce is disgusting, rice is very mushy, no flavor, pork no flavor. Told the waiter and they didn't care, wouldn't exhange my plate for something I could eat but told me no...any other restaurant would want to make a customer happy, and also said I should order something different next time I come in! Decided to give them a second chance after an oily, salty experience six or so years ago. This time the veggie fried rice had a slightly blackish color and contained perhaps 1/4 cup of veggies at most, mostly mushrooms, with the rest of the portion being not-very-cooked rice. The Mu Shi, aka Mu Shu veggies were 85% hardly-cooked cabbage and such a small portion. Heck, for an additional 50-75 cents worth of veggies they could double the portion size. The only negative note here was that they ran out of broccoli, so I asked for snow peas as the replacement. The taste was still so amazing, I really didn't care. This is a wonderful local flare place to dine. You get to know people here in Penn / Grass Valley pretty fast and the owners here are very approachable. Cold night. Sore throat. Long day. Hot and Sour soup is the only thing that sounds appetizing. If you are a local to Nevada County, you know the Asian food scene is lacking Fred's is filthy and disgusting so we don't eat there. Asian Garden is mediocre for lunch at best and that's only because the lunch prices are affordable. That 2 in 1 Mongolian place is gross. I'm not a fan of Chinese Buffets, and that is the fourth and final option for "Chinese" food in the county. Normally I would drive all the way to Auburn for decent "Chinese" food, but I really didn't feel like driving an hour round trip to get some soup. So, I turned to Yelp to maybe decide on the lesser of the evils, when I was reminded of this little hidden gem in Penn Valley. We looked over the menu and decided to order the Szechuan dinner for two. Everything was DELICIOUS!!! We were so impressed! The soup and sauces were thinner than I am used to, but they are all flavorful. Even the fortune cookies were yummy! We will definitely be back! read more

This is the place. My husband travels all over California for work and up until last year, our son and I went with him. So when I tell you that this is the best Chinese eatery, I know what I'm talking about. We lived in Koreatown and couldn't find an Asian restaurant that came close to China House. To be fair, my husband is from the area. But every town we were sent to for work, we searched out something that would come close to China House and it wasn't possible. There was ONE that was ok but China House was the one we had to compare to. So glad we moved here and now I can have it whenever I want. The hostess/waitress (both of them) are extremely friendly, the owner, Bill and his staff are excellent cooks and I love everything I've ordered there. The best? The Hot and Sour Soup. The dining room isn't huge or super fancy, it's comforting and down home. You never feel like a stranger there. read more
