This place is in the middle of nowhere basically. I came here while on a road trip and my mom decided to dine here. I didn't have much expectations. We were one of the two groups there. The staff was friendly and chill. The food was okay. The Szechuan beef was tender, but the beef in the chow fun was not. The beef tasted very similar too. The noodles tasted like they were cooked on a burnt pan. I only liked the Szechuan beef which I was expecting to be spicy but it was not. Personally, I wouldn't come back. read more

This is a cute little hole in the wall filled with pretty paintings for sale by the owners daughter, Linda Hao. The restaurant itself had a cute calming ambiance and the lighting was perfect not too bright or too dark. I didn't have a chance to take a picture of the food since we were all so hungry after a day of moving. We ordered a large egg drop soup, 6 vegetable egg rolls, big steamed rice, black mushrooms with broccoli, sesame chicken, chicken egg foo yung, shrimp with snow peas and vegetable chow fun. The egg drop soup was good and heart warming for a cold day. The egg rolls were crispy and hot. The service was very prompt and the waiter was attentive. He took away plates quickly, always filled our waters and asked if we needed anything. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for some good Chinese food in the area. read more

The restaurant was empty Sunday night so we got right in. Service was typical, somewhat indifferent, not overly friendly or rude. We ordered sizzling rice soup which didn't sizzle when the rice was added. When served, the soup was luke warm, not hot, hence no sizzle. While it tasted fine, we were hoping for hot soup, not warm soup. We ordered General's chicken that was also not very hot but had good flavor. I've noticed a general trend at Auburn Chinese restaurants to serve warm food rather than hot food. This is a deal breaker for me and I'll head to Roseville next time. read more

Served on an 11" platter,it was a mountain of food. Good, hot,fresh, and loaded with vegetables & chicken. As much as I love to eat,I was unable to finish. Having eaten Chinese in the SF /Oakland area for the past 20 years, I would rate this as pretty good & worth a return visit. We had a full meal to go & stopped to give it away to a homeless person. This is the Kung pao tofu which was so crispy, hot and sour was amazing. When I walked inside to pick up my to go food, there was a few tables seated and one of the owners was there playing a Landtom Pipa Guitar. What made this place a win for me was how friendly the owners were. We walked in, expecting very little from a strip-mall Chinese restaurant, and were pleasantly surprised to find the owners spoke the Sichuan dialect we also spoke. We spent quite awhile talking about our experiences in the Sichuan area, then asked if they could fix us some vegan fried rice. They made an absolutely delectable fried rice, then threw in an order of kung pao tofu ~ which was pretty good too! I could not recommend this hidden gem of a restaurant more highly. read more

A common theme in my reviews of Chinese restaurants is how well they make their Hot & Sour soup. Alas, Szechuan Restaurant's version is wide of the mark: neither hot (spicy) nor sour, a pale tan color suggesting the absence of soy sauce, no tofu, you get the picture. I ordered the Szechuan pork which proved disappointing , lacking the spiciness one expects when ordering this dish. I also discovered a piece of chicken meat mixed in with the pork. Such carelessness is alarming and unacceptable. The sauce was properly thickened but not particularly flavorful - again no spicy heat. The chow mein proved to be the best part of the meal. I was the only diner at noon, but there were a couple of take out orders. The service was good all things considered. The ambience is interesting with the walls plastered with amateur paintings. The menu extensive and in fairness I will return in the evening sometime to try other dishes and provide a separate review. I am not giving up on this place just yet. I came here with high hopes and instead paid $17 for 6 pieces of mandarin chicken and a little ramen. When I asked the guy at front why so little food for what I'm paying, he responded by saying "don't come here again." First time I have ever heard someone telling a customer to leave and never come back. Mind you I was being calm and nice about it. I even showed him pictures from google of customers getting much more from their place and all he offered was 4 more pieces of chicken and told me never to come back again. Wanted to try something different from our normal Chinese or Thai. We got the pork chow main and the spring rolls. Noodle we great and we really liked their pork. Spring rolls twisted like the ones you get from Costco frozen, not that they were bad, just hoping for something a little fresher or home made. Service was ok, they were having issues with the wifi and couldn't accept cards, so they were more preoccupied with that than helping us. Not a big deal, we were just picking up to go. We've eaten here several times and like it. It's a good place. We've started eating here on Christmas Day, and this year we phoned in an order, and when we picked it up, realized the order was wrong. We told the guy and he asked for ten minutes to get it right. Ok, no problem--mistakes happen. Ten minutes later, we get the correct order, the extra food that had cooked for us (the wrong order), AND gave it to us for free because they messed up the order and made us wait. I was really surprised and it was a great Christmas gift -- unexpected and with gratitude for us as customers. I have been to this place two times. First time was at least a year ago and it was wonderful. Sat in the parking lot enjoying my food while waiting for my laundry to be done this time same thing except the food was not good at all like it was the first time. I am not a picky person at all. The fried rice was a yellow color with a very few tiny tiny pieces of egg, and that was it with no flavor. The chow mein was really oily. That was the only thing that tasted decent. I had sweet and sour chicken, which I did not care for all. The pineapple was good, of course. Needless to say, I will not be back. Really disappointing! We had gotten stuck in a traffic jam on Highway 80 for over an hour, so I was starving when I went to this restaurant. I thought, 'great I will order a simple quick lunch special which is less than $10 (prawns with lobster sauce)'. I didn't realize it but probably it was about 15 minutes after 3 PM, which was when the lunch specials ended. But I ordered one, and the waitress nodded and took my order. What she came back with was basically a large dilute soup with prawns and egg whites with a very small amount of cubed carrots, and peas. At first I thought maybe that was the soup that comes with it, but then I realized it was really a huge soup and didn't make sense. When I confronted her about it - she seemed to barely understand English at all - she said the lunch specials were already over so she gave me something different. It seemed to me that this was a scam because I ended up having to pay 50% more for something I didn't want, just because she didn't tell me that she couldn't give me the lunch special. If she had, I would've ordered something smaller, maybe an appetizer and some rice. It really angered me to be set up in a scam like that, with her pretending she couldn't understand me (even though I pointed to the item on the menu then she nodded, like she did). The item she brought was on a totally different page. I really don't have any respect for places that do this kind of thing to people, when prices have skyrocketed for the most simple restaurant dishes. I would never go here again. read more

I haven't been here in about 10 years. My husband & I used to live in an apartment next to this restaurant and eat here all the time. It looks really run down but everyone working there is so nice and the food is delicious. They give huge portions. I'm so glad we went back. The Princess chicken is SO GOOD. So is the fried rice. In the same little strip mall with Raley's, the Thrifty Wash, and the neat bookstores sides this little Chinese Restaurant with its blinds usually closed due to direct sunlight beaming in. Two red lanterns hang on an oblong dark red wood sign where "Szechuan Food" is carved in and painted yellow. Inside is a garishly decorated rectangular space. Surrounding the white cloth-topped tables and pink chairs is a plethora of hand-painted portraits of animals on the white and red walls, various brightly-colored light fixtures above the tables, and a few chandeliers in the front and back dangle from the brown roof. Very...interesting to say the least. I'm offered a menu by a friendly server who helps point the way through their rather large multi-paged menu. In the end, I decided on the lunch combo of General's chicken with fried rice, chow mein, foil-wrapped chicken, a rangoon, vegetable spring roll, and side of hot and sour soup. The soup, a deep red-brown halfway reflecting the light, was neither hot nor sour, but only slightly hot in temperature. It had no flavor whatsoever and that's a bit shocking since this soup usually has a nice bit of tang and spice to the whole bit. However, it was simply bland and couldn't be helped by the tofu, egg, mushrooms, peas, and bamboo strings within. The rest of the meal didn't fair any better. I was given a rather large plate piled with a lot of food that ranged in visual appeal and smelled a tad burnt. The best: the foil-wrapped chicken. A cheat as it had a mask to house itself, but inside was a steamy chunk of chicken in a sweet, garlicky soy sauce. Next, the rangoon was a golden fried triangle of savory cream cheese with bits of imitation crab and green onion. Now to the "eh" side of things. The chicken was thick with glossy/reflective nonsense that did nothing to improve the rather bland taste of the whole thing. Again, a shockingly tasteless thing despite all of the ingredients within. The spring roll was over-fried with odd, almost bruised, bits originating within. Taste was just bitter, burnt vegetables that couldn't be rescued by any additives. I tried hot sauce, the chili, and the sweet 'n' sour on the side, yet nothing made it pass 'bearable'. Finally, there should have been some solace with the fried rice or chow mein but that would not be the case. The rice was a bit dried out, overdone, and still on the bland side like its brethren. The mein was the culprit of the odor. No matter the bite, it suddenly had a taste of burnt funk underneath. It wasn't just the noodles - which were overdone and soft - but the oil too was overcooked. This has been one of the few times, but I didn't finish any of it. Even with being insanely hungry, this was just bad. Inedible. Yes, the staff is nice and you get a lot of food for a few bucks; it's just not very good. I give it a pass at a 1. read more
