Our lunch group of 7 men showed up about noon, individually but within a 10 minute span. Parking is easy as the restaurant sits on a side strip in a big shopping center anchored by SaveMart. One guy showed up early and secured a table for 8 and was enjoying a beverage when I entered. Although we were the only people in the restaurant the waiter was completely ignoring us. After the rest of our group showed up we finally flagged him down to come and get our drink orders. I'm really not sure why he was ignoring us, maybe wanted everyone there before taking orders? When the server came over he wanted to take food orders rather than drink orders. We got it sorted out and he took drink orders. We had some discussion on how we were going to order for the group, I.e. individual lunch plates or group share. Our server was pretty impatient with us. We do one check so it wasn't a billing problem. Again, remember, no one else is in the restaurant. After the food was delivered he never reappeared. Only at the end with fortune cookies and the check. I suspect they lost some second drink orders due to that non appearance. Definitely NOT a happy experience. There was nothing good about this restaurant. 1) They opened late and then only finally opened because I peered into the window and saw a man who works there sitting at a table. He looked up and saw me...didn't even give me an apologetic "be there in a second" gesture. Just got up, and it took him another two minutes to get to the door. 2) No warm welcome. Edit: No welcome whatsoever. He took me to the table with the menus. 3) [[HIGHLIGHT]]The women's bathroom was in disarray. They had literally just opened the door and there were paper towels and toilet seat covers on the floor. A female staff member left as I was entering -- and she left it like that for customers? The sink was full of suds (at least she washed with soap) and the rim of the sink was full of water. I had to wipe it down to avoid getting my blouse wet.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] 4) [[HIGHLIGHT]]The server was as inhospitable as the man who opened the door. And we told her it was pretty hot and asked if they could turn the temp of the AC down a bit. She told us they had just turned it on and cold air would be coming... Well, it should have been on a good half hour or so (about how long it took to cool down a little) before they opened the doors so customers would be comfortable.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] 5) The food was not good at all. My friend's meal was mostly flavorless, except for the pieces of ginger, and was extremely greasy. Mine was bland, bland, bland, and the meat looked and tasted like it been simmered, not seared in a hot wok. 6) The server never came to ask how the food was and never checked back to see if we needed more water. No one else was in the restaurant (that says something), so it wasn't like we could catch her walking by. 7) After the server brought the check, it took another 15 minutes before she came out again to get payment. And there were still no other customers -- so I have no idea what she was doing. Neither of us finished our food and had we not been on a time crunch we would have sent it back -- but neither of us was confident another order would be any better. Soup choice, just as hometown Oakland, want to be authentic. I order hot and sour soup! Any can have egg flower soup, I decide on hot and sour soup! My only question there were two prices listed. One price say $15.02 with tax, the other price say $15.54 with tax. I gave two ten dollar bills with Letter Of Compliment, the cashier gave me five dollars back in change. I left two dollars for tip! First time ordering take out from here and I was disappointed. I ordered a beef dish and an eggplant dish and both were mostly chopped onions. The beef dish had hardly any beef pieces and the pieces that were in it were chewy rather than tender. The eggplant dish did have a decent amount of eggplant but the chopped onions overwhelmed the dish and the sauces of both dishes were the same! I would not go back. read more

Worst food I have ever had. 1. Garlic eggplant deep fried in old oil. 2 shrimp in war wonton soup was mushy and smelled fishy could not eat. 3. Egg pho young was like a thick egg and lots of flour dry pancake. Could not eat. 4. Chinese chicken salad deep fried chicken no flavor. Sauce was a sweet Mayonnaise. Could not eat. 5. Chicken Chow Mein is just plain poor: about four TINY pieces of chicken (one solitary piece was quarter sized and the other 3 shreds smaller than a dime) in a carton full of fishy-tasting thick noodles. Oh plus a couple additional shreds of unknown vegetable matter. Called the restaurant to let them know and ask for a refund but phone wasn't answered. Including photos of menu description and the carton of Chicken-less Chicken Chow Mein. Really disappointed because this was ordered as a treat for my hard working husband. The food was great. I loved my ribs and my mom loved her food. I loved the fried rice and noodles. The honey walnut shrimp was not my favorite. It had nothing to do with this restaurant. Happy Wok Chinese Restaurant, located in Auburn Town Center, in Auburn, CA, is a family-owned and operated restaurant that serves a variety of Chinese dishes, in a comfortable dining room. I'm an active member of the Facebook group, "Gold Country Foodies," and for the past year or so, many members had posted very positive reviews about their dining experiences at this restaurant, both in the cuisine and the service. I'd been wanting to dine at Happy Wok for quite some time, and had messaged the restaurant to let them know of my dining plans, to take photos of my dining experience, and to post reviews on this website, Yelp and Facebook. The staff messaged me positively and said they were looking forward to my visit. As I walked into the restaurant, I was greeted by a hostess wearing a mask - not a great start - and promptly seated at a table and given a menu. She seemed to be in a hurry and rushed off, without saying much of anything. As I was looking over the menu, another staff member quickly placed a glass of ice water on my table without making any comments. There seemed to be one hostess and two hosts working the restaurant, and all were wearing masks, which definitely raised a "red flag" with me. Wait... this is Auburn, located in very "red" Placer County, and this is May, 2023... who wears masks? I looked over the "Lunch Specials" section of the menu, and decided to begin at the "top" and enjoy a lunch of "Sweet and Sour Pork," which is served with fried rice and egg roll, along with an extra bowl of "Sweet and Sour" soup, and a large Sapporo beer for dessert. My hostess - who I "think" is one of owners - came to take my order. Before I placed my order, I introduced myself, gave her one of my business cards, which introduce me as a photographer and a "foodie." She looked it over and said, "I'm too busy to take photos. I have other things to do." I asked her name and she didn't say anything. Alright... I then went on to say that I wanted to take photos inside the restaurant, and take her photo as she delivered my order to me. I mentioned that I'm a member of "Gold Country Foodies" and that we'd messaged and whoever had come back to me was "good" with what I planned to do. I told her that I have done this for many years, and would not be intrusive to other diners, and it would only take seconds to take photos. She replied again, "I'm too busy to take photos..." So I got up from the table, politely thanked her for her time, and in parting I said, "Since you're too busy for my photos, I'm too busy to dine here. I wish you a pleasant day." I can't comment about the food served at Happy Wok Chinese Restaurant, as lunch never happened, but I CAN comment that I've crossed them off my list, never to return. I truly wanted to love this restaurant, as countless friends and other "foodies" had posted many positive comments about Happy Wok Chinese Restaurant. My mom took me out to lunch today and we decided to try Happy Wok since they had good reviews. The food was delicious and this was my first time trying pork buns and they were delicious. The mongolian beef and BBQ Pork fried rice were delicious too. Ordered hot and sour soup - my benchmark for how a Chinese restaurant approaches their cooking. The soup was disappointing, lacking any depth of flavor. The Szechuan pork was a gooey, flavorless mess. The abundance of pork could not overcome the dish's other flaws, i.e lack the of spicy heat and over-thickened sauce. The eggroll was pedestrian. In my effort to explore and find my go-to spots for certain cuisines in the area, I recently tried Happy Wok for the first time after searching for a Chinese restaurant in the area on Yelp. I tried my two basic favorites: the potstickers and the chow mein. Both were solid and good. The potstickers were homemade as far as I could tell with a thicker breading and a yummy pork mixture filling on the inside. The one complaint I have about the potstickers is that two of them were burnt on one side and that burnt part was not edible. I got the BBQ pork chow mein and it was made with thick noodles and a good balance of meat to noodle. Overall great flavor with some garlic and other seasoning which made it a delicious dish. I will definitely return for the potstickers, chowmein, and to try other meat and/or fish dishes they have to offer. read more

I used to love this place, but the order I got last night 8/25/24 was a mouthful of fat for the meat- literally inches of it instead of meat. I think they tried to used chicken thigh and it was 50% fat at least. It was really bad and it was $17 with a mandatory tip included- this place has really gone downhill since COVID. In one of Auburn's strip-malls is a simple wooden sign with the words "Happy Wok" in green and red. Colorful xmas lights line the windows who's blinds are shuttered closed. Inside is a garishly decorated square space of hanging RGB lights, fat red lanterns, gongs and buddhas on shelves, and animal paintings all along the off-white walls. The square space is lined with burgundy booths and a central island provides even more booths, hanging lights, and lanterns. Except with an additional lining of dark blue LEDs. After a look through the green, folder-like menu, I decide on the lunch combo of sweet-and-sour pork. Out came a white plate filled to the edge with fried pork covered in the orange sauce, a pile of chow mien, a scoop of fried rice, an orange wedge, and a single stumpy fried shrimp with accompanying saucer of translucent orange sweet-and-sour. The unfortunately tough pork cubes had a good deal of crunch despite having a healthy coating of the surprisingly tame sauce. It wasn't bad, just not huge on the flavor game; same with the fried rice. The shrimp had a nice crisp and succulent texture with a taste simply of the shrimp's natural sweetness. And then there's the chow mein that tasted of burned/scalded cooking oil. It'd be fine with the soft noodles and mass of onions and cabbage, but that peculiar taste of 'burnt' comes with each bite. We've had better Chinese food from a can! We ask for salt and pepper calamari, and got something deep fried plain, and first bite taste like oysters. Chicken was deep fried and has more batter than chicken. it was covered in an unrecognizable brown syrup. Lack luster fried rice had one green pea, one piece of scrambled egg, and not enough soy sauce to turn the dry rice brown. The chow mein has no flavor except for the soggy cabage and onion. Next time I want Chinese food I would rather go to Grocery Outlet and get a frozen tv dinner than go to "Happy Wok"! read more
