Me and my friends have been coming here quite often for the last 2 years, and the food is great. I've never been disappointed with the quality, it all seems to taste great. The flume-ride part of the restaurant does leave a little to be desired, minimal selection at best, your standbys California rolls, ebi, that kinda stuff. Where Hanamaru's menu REALLY shines is in the special rolls. The chef likes to experiment and go completely nuts with his sushi. I'd always grown up on the spicy tuna rolls my uncle would get, and California rolls, with some nigiri sushi now and again. But this was crazy to me, sushi with cream-cheese? Asparagus? A roll involving battered chicken? And surprisingly, it's all really great. They make a wide variety of cold and hot rolls, and after 10 years of cold sushi, this was an inventive and pleasant change. My personal favorites are the spicy fly away roll, firecracker roll, James Bond roll, and the Double Awesome (it's kinda like a seafood bake, with mozzarella cheese and house sauce) Portions are pretty good, at around 6 to 8 pieces a roll. and the price is really reasonable. A good meal can be had for less than $30 a head, but if you're super hungry you'll end up spending more. I recommend the Hakutsuru Slim plum wine if you're making a night of it, but watch out, it's $16 dollars a bottle. Service can be hit and miss here. I'm pretty regular at Hanamaru, so your experience may vary; Sometimes the waitress can be hard to get a hold of, but this place can get crowded. Mix ups on orders happen occasionally, but the super nice staff never charges us when this happens. Don't be afraid to try and flag a waitress down if you need something, they've always been polite when I've had to get their attention. Often times, they'll make it up to you if you've been inconvenienced, so all their happiness feels genuine. The place gets crowded easily, so those with really large groups of 8+ might want to consider someplace else. also, there's no real booths or anything like that, so if you're looking for something romantic, this isn't your place. For any other situation, its fine. Totally worth your time and money. PS: I'll take my sushi spot the way I like it: free from sushi-snobs who're trying to impress the AZN ladies on yelp. Ok. I eat alot of sushi and at alot of places but this one it the best. Employees are extremely nice and polite. They have tables and sushi boat bar. They also cover there sushi boat bar with plastic wrap for more freshness, what a great idea. They are very creative with there food and totally love there menu. This is my place for sushi for sure. I ordered the Tempura Udon, Teriyaki Dinner Box with Sashimi, and some tekka maki. The teriyaki is actually a 1/5 stars. The meat isn't sliced thinly and it's thick and tough. I ended up throwing the entire thing away because I couldn't chew the meat. The udon was okay, I like the general taste but it's pretty bland. The tempura itself is actually quite good with the right texture and crunchiness. The tekka maki was okay. The fish tastes not as fresh as other sushi restaurants. read more

We sat at the sushi bar and the boats that went by are crusted in filth; the lights above where they make the food are crusted in dust; the whole place is just filthy. What a disappointment. They used to be one of the best around. Once the other chefs went to Tsunami in Mt. View it has turned for the worst. The soft shell crab was cold and tasted terrible. I think they used seasoned Italian bread crumbs. The chefs left the room as we sat at the Sushi bar, we were the only 2 customers in there at the time at 6:30 PM. Very rude! That alone should have gave us a clue. It used to be packed at that time. We tried to eat and it was so bad we demanded our check and left, never to return. I have to say that we have been here several times and I always think that the really cool and unpleasant service we have had was just because someone had a bad day but it has happened multiple times to us. I came here with 2 friends because we craved sushi hardcore and all the other sushi restaurants were closed between lunch and dinner. We went in and were the only people there the whole time. I am very forgiving of slow service ONLY IF the restaurant is busy! I have never had service this awful in my whole life, even in a busy restaurant!!! It took us 10 mins to order drinks... 10 minutes later she came back, she forgot our waters and also forgot what kind of sake we asked for... she came back another 10 minutes later, gave us our sake and waters, and then finally took our food order. She never brought my friend the steamed rice that she ordered... and then on the bill she charged us for it! She also charged us for TWO bottles of sake instead of one. We got it fixed though, but still, WTF? I'm giving this place one star because of the service. The sushi was pretty good, especially the deep fried New York roll, but it was not good enough for me to bump this place up to two stars. Our waitress never once came back to check on us to see how our food was... and we asked for the bill twice and it took at least 10 minutes to get the bill. It just frustrates me that there were just NO excuses for this kind of service!!! :( It also frustrates me that that was the last time I got to see one of my friends before she moved to Germany. The restaurant has recently changed owners and we had dinner there on a Sunday night. The place was packed, the food was good and the service was quick. This has been my go-to sushi spot in Sunnyvale for years! I have tried just about everything on the menu and its safe to say we are regulars here. Their salad and miso soup which comes with the Bento box (or you can order them individually) is amazing! The salad is always very fresh and cold, which I like, the lettuce always crispy, and I have never had such a tasty peanut dressing anywhere else. The miso soup comes with a good portion of tofu and seaweed and piping hot! The sashimi here is always fresh and the rolls are very flavorful. The chefs are always welcoming when you first walk into the restaurant and the waiters are quick to seat you and take your order. Great service and pleasant staff! read more

I have not been to the restaurant, but have had delivery from them 3 times, and every time the sushi has been perfect, perfect, perfect! By far, this place has the freshest tasting sushi in the area. They don't overuse mayo or sweet chili sauces, thank heavens. Only fresh spices, rice vinegar, maybe a touch of fish/eel sauce. Even the deep-fried rolls don't feel as fried/carby as previous ones I've tried. All around, great sushi place. Give them a try! read more

Stopped by here for a quick lunch the other day because it was convenient. I was a bit worried when I walked in and saw the sushi boats at the bar. We decided to sit at a table instead. The lunch menu is pretty good. We both started off with the sunamono which was not very good. It is supposed to be marinated cucumber and it tasted like they sliced cucumber and poured vinegar dressing on it. Not feeling too adventurous, I had the chicken teriyaki, tempura, gyoza bento. It wasn't too bad. The portions were large. Lots of chicken that was pretty tasty. The tempura was not covered with doughy batter. I hate that. It wasn't as light as I like it though. For something like $7-8, it was quite a bargain though. My lunch companion had the unagi donburi. That looked really good. There was a lot of unagi and it looked very tender. Overall, not a bad place to grab a quick lunch. Certainly a great value for the money. read more

I had a variety of different rolls here and there was way too many to choose from. I had the spider roll, crunchy roll, and the victoria's secret roll. I am not a fan of Siracha sauce so I do not know why I ordered the Victoria's secret roll. One thing that did bother me was that service here was sub-par as it took us around 15 minutes just to have the waiter circle back to us to get our check. I tried to stay away from the sushi on the boats as I was looking for fresh sushi. Probably will not be coming here again since it is too far out of my way. read more

This place has it all! I've only had their sushi (rolls mainly), so I can't say much about their other Japanese food, but I LOVE everything I've had there. My BF and I are huge unagi lovers and they have many great rolls with it. YUM Hawaiian Maki, Crunchy maki (love those tempera flakes!), etc. Service has been outstanding every time we visited (a mixture of both weekdays and weekends, and there has been no difference). They also close later (10pm or so), unlike many restaurants which close at 9pm or earlier). A prompt welcoming as we enter, and a friendly farewell when we leave! The hostess and waitresses are so nice, too. :) Your sushi will come out fast - the chefs are quick! The only funny thing about the waitresses is that they often forget who orders what, and they'll put my BF's order in front of me, but oh well, so what? AND, almost...actually I think every time we've visited, they always give us a freebie dessert (whether fruit or mochi ice cream), after our meal. THEY'RE SO GREAT! Oh yeah, and they're cheap, too!! They were recommended to me by someone who has been going there for 5+ years and my BF and I have been going there for half a year now. I'm so disappointed with the sushi that Hanamaru had recently. We had the rock and roll roll and the play boy roll, both of which used to be one of my favorites. This time the rice was mushy and wet, and the eel was not at all fresh. The waitress was nice enough to not charge us for the sushi. SO, I will always remember this place for good service, but the quality of the sushi has gone down...so sad. I was a patron of this place for years. read more

I am usually picky with sushi - has to be good rice: right amount of rice and not too much of it (filler). also has to be nice decent size (not too big that you can't fit in your mouth or too small that its unsatisfying) but this place has it. atmosphere is nice too. clean and well lit. waitresses are really nice. my fav is the super duper roll... It always pains me to have to update a review, but this is a necessity. Diners beware: well over a year ago (maybe 2 years now?), Hanamaru changed ownership. The food now officially sucks. The fish is yucky, not fresh, and sparse. The service is fine, but the Hanamaru of old had excessively good service, so this is a huge let down. And finally, the bathroom is now gross (or at least it has been the last time I was there). Ugh. =( read more

Not sure whats going on at this place, I had dinner here Sat we sat at the sushi bar. I ordered a cold tofu dish for an app, it came on a huge plate the tofu was the silken type not the right type for this dish, the presentation was all wrong it says on the menu that it comes with bonito flakes which i like on this type of dish. No bonito, the tofu was cut into these huge squares you needed to cut before you ate, overall I would give this dish the heave ho. The rest of our meal was sushi and it was sub par. I ordered the Toro, it came to me so cold I almost lost a tooth, and one of them tasted off ( i did not eat it ) the other was OK but for 12 bucks a throw you would think they would pay attention to its freshness. My wife ordered sushi the rice was a day old at best which is not typical of a good sushi bar. I did enjoy the cold beer! I will give them one more shot at my business but only one more chance. read more

4-stars? Really? We came here for a lunch. The place was full and they had only one waiter running around and one chef trying hard to complete all the orders. We ordered Wakami salad for an appetizer. I ordered salmon sushimi and my hubby had nigiri (sake, maguru, hirame).... Wakami salad was ok, but a bit watery for some reason. My salmon sashimi were stone cold inside and had a crunchy-icy feeling, like they were taken out of the freezer an our ago and did not have enough time to melt down. My husband maguru also had a color that tuna has when it spends way too much time in the refrigerator. Hirame - which was advertised and the fish of the day was very thinly sliced and had no taste to it at all. After disaster with the raw fish we decided to order something from their special rolls. We got Lion King. I ate Lion King in a lot of different sushi places, and this is the worst by far. It was someone warm on top and cold in the middle and at the bottom. Their idea of house souse for this roll is a salad dressing... and no spice at all.. Overall, if you like bento boxes and cooked rolls, it might be an ok place, but for raw fish, I would avoid it next time. read more

We ate here for dinner, the restaurant was old, but nice. I really liked my crunch roll. I actually did an extra order of it mid-meal because I had finished it so fast. The Sunomono, I got it with the imitation crab, which was good- I truly wish there was some seaweed in there. We also ordered the blossom roll and the crazy monkey?, and the obento box with salmon teriyaki. The salmon teriyaki was good, the blossom roll was not my favorite. I would order the crazy monkey again. The price was about average of what you would expect in a Sushi place. I think the place was not too bad, I would come here again. Hanamaru! I love you! I normally get a chicken teriyaki dinner and some of their fancier rolls. The chicken teriyaki is nothing special, but it's big enough for two people to share. The sushi is pretty yummy. I don't eat raw fish, so I can't attest to how fresh their sashimi is, but if you're going for shrimp tempura or anything with soft shell crab, hell yeah, this place is good. As far as service, it can be slow sometimes, but they're very accommodating. There was a 20-30 min wait for my food last time, and they apologized, then gave me some free appetizers :) read more

This is our local favorite. You can get alot of fun, fairly high quality rolls and nigiri for a decent price. Lots of fried and saucy roll options that are exceptionally tasty, but the pure stuff is also quite good. I often get a decent dry sake and a fun dessert, but still walk out with my wallet about the same weight. Impatient? They keep very fresh rolls on little river boats floating around the bar. Great to just sit down and start eating while your order goes through. Normally when I see this, I'm hesitant, but they keep it fresh and put effort into these rolls as much as what you order directly. read more
