This is your average sushi joint. I only come here when I make my stop towards the bakery nearby. Place is kinda small so not good for big groups, but at least feels intimate. I have been here a few times for both lunch and dinner. I dont really care for the sushi boat thing. I rather order directly freshly made from the chef. They wrap their sushi boat dishes in plastic to prolong the freshness. If you want to come here for UNI, forget it. They never have it. I do love the salmon teriyaki conbination box. Decent restaurant...Small, more personalized feel to it. The staff was very nice and helpful. My brother, his girlfriend and I sat at the sushi bar, and ordered off the menu. The sushi bar didn't have a great choice of sushi selections since we were the last ones to get to pick what we wanted.Only one chef was working that day, but he did do an excellent job of preparing our sushi. This place is alright. The decor is really cute and feminine. I like being inside the restaurant. However, I got a rainbow roll and the inside was suppose to be a california roll but all it had was crab in it. It tasted pretty bland to me and the fish was not the freshest I've ever tasted. I'm typically critical of sushi bars lacking in authenticity. This one, like much of the Bay Area, is run by Koreans rather than Japanese and features all sorts of funky non-traditional rolls. The difference here is that if you accept that it's a nouveau sushi dining experience, they execute really well. The food was tasty, fresh and relatively inexpensive. The portions were large. The interior was cozy, colorful and fun. The waitresses were really cute :-) My only complaint is the lame domestic sake selection. Will definitely be back and bring friends. read more

I love the sushi here. The Inari is my personal favorite. It's never dry and the chef always makes sure to put a good amount of rice inside. It's a small casual restaurant but has wonderful service with attentive servers. Highly recommend! read more

I've only had the nigiri lunch special, so my review is only based on this dish. The salmon skin hand roll is the best I've ever had. The ratio of crunchy skin, to salmon, to rice is perfect. Service is terrible! They "forgot" to put tempura in the noodle we ordered. Only after asking them to check the menu did they realize that and add it back. The price on the menu is inconsistent with the menu shown in google map. The quantity is small compared to other sushi restaurant and price is relatively high. They also put the green onion in the noodles though we explicitly asked them not to. I wouldn't recommend anyone to eat there. There are many other options. So why bother go there? read more

OK - some of the less than stellar reviews have a point. The food is good but, yes, a bit Americanized. "The McDonalds of sushi" is way too harsh. We are regulars there and love the friendly staff. We have brought our active grandchild and they are nothing but accommodating. I consider it an enjoyable local eatery. Go elsewhere and pay more if you want a more upscale experience. We love it. If you like traditional rolls, then Hanamaru is not the place for you. If you like fun, new, inventive rolls, then come on in! The rolls are made from fresh fish, the tuna is amazing. This place has become my favorite sushi place in the area for taste AND price! The sushi rice has a great taste as does their unique creations! If you like sweet and savory flavors, try the Lion King! For simple, creamy, light flavored nigiri type sushi, try their Super White Tuna (Hawaiian Butterfish). Tired of the same ol' salad? Try a cucumber sunomono salad. It's sweet and tangy. I've taken my sushi-loving friends to this place, as well as first timers and they ALL love the food. One of the best sushi places in the Bay Area. The fatty tuna here is simply delicious. Most of the rolls are good - ie, without being overwhelmed with Mayo-based sauces, right ratio of rice to other ingredients, right temperature/texture, etc. Izakaya and Hanamaru are two of the very best Silicon Valley has to offer. Me and my boyfriend randomly came across this place on date night a few months back. We were looking for this one thai place, but after seeing how full Hanamaru's was, we decided to eat here instead. What a great find! They have a very interesting selection of rolls and the fish is nice and fresh. We had two orders of hamachi and two orders of salmon and I think 2-3 rolls. I don't remember exactly what rolls, but one was the firecracker. Ah spicy, crunchy, and exactly what I want in a deep fried roll. Service was great, this place is awesome! read more

I went here for the first time last night - the food is delicious. They aren't messing around w/the spicy sauces...so if something says spicy, they mean it. I had the Krispy Kreme which was amazing and the spicy scallop roll which was of course really spicy and also great. The service was a little slow considering every table was taken and there was only 1 waitress, but she was really friendly and gave us free ice cream at the end of the meal. I love sushi and find most places have started charging up to $16 for a roll which I think is way too much...the prices here are very reasonable. Definitely recommended :) read more

Most of the staff that I have encountered here are actually Korean, not Japanese; the place isn't fancy, and probably seats about 30-40 people. The quality of the fish and sushi has been consistently good; they have a large selection of appetizers and other food items. They have a wide variety of rolls with fun names like "Local Girl", "49ers", "Crazy Monkey", "Harley Davidson" and "Jalapeno Bomb". Some of my favorite non-roll items on the menu are the: Sumo Puffs, a deep fried crab puff A Spoonful of Happiness -- a spoon of uni + quail egg, a spoon of ankimo and whitefish, and a shot of sake. read more

My kids love the dinner meals served here. They make really good tempura which is nice and crunchy. I think it's a Korean owned Japanese restaurant which makes decent food. Their sashimi is ok - not raving about it like some other more authentic local Japanese restaurants. However their rolls are generous and very filling. I have been going to Hanamaru for maybe 15 years, and I've always found it to be a bit of a mixed bag. The sushi here has always been fresh, decent, and priced in line with the market (though I'm not sure why they have the sushi boats, as hardly anyone ever orders off of them). The sunomono salads, soba and udon soups, and tempura have likewise been consistently good. However, their teriyaki, katsu, and donburi dishes are usually OK, and sometimes off, and expensive for what you are getting. Tonight was a good example of this. I ordered the salmon roll and the unagi donburi, both of which came out fairly quickly. The salmon roll was delicious - the salmon was fresh, and could almost melt in my mouth. On the other hand, the unagi donburi was a letdown, which was a shame, because it had previously been the only donburi dish that was consistently good. It contained a few small, thin pieces of barbecued eel artfully arranged on an enormous bed of rice, then topped with cucumber matchsticks and flakes of dried wakame seaweed. At times, the eel had very little flavor at all; at other times, it had a strong fishy taste, as if it had been sitting around a bit too long. It certainly wasn't worth the ~$15 that they charged me for it. Speaking of prices, Hanamaru's have been rising of late. The latest change is a jump in the price of their bento boxes, from $13/bento to $15/bento. At those prices, I don't think the Bentos are worth it, as they are full of teriyakis, katsus, and other dishes that Hanamaru doesn't do that well. So far the other menu items have not seen a huge jump in their prices (yet). For the prices, the very swift and efficient service, and the uneven quality of the food, I rate this restaurant as 3/5 stars. read more

I had my customers from work coming to my house, ETA was 7:00PM, it's 7:30 not here yet.... finally at 8PM I called and they stated oh sorry we had alot of orders it's coming now. 8:30PM it's here, I can't blame the driver but they could of at least called to tell us we are late. All other places when using grubhub if they are late they always call. I spent about $80 on food. oh... they comped us with "beans" and "soup" go figure on that. Never again.,.........
