I did not expect to receive such good service at a dinky little Korean restaurant in Kalihi--hence the five stars. My waitress was so sweet and polite: she asked nicely if she could remove my dishes, she gave me extra kimchee, she checked up on me regularly, and after she cleared my bowl, she asked if she could bring me hot tea. All this with a sweet, gentle, genuine smile. The other thing that threw me was that they pour you lemon scented water. Nice touch! It was a sweltering day, so I ordered the naeng myun: cold, chewy buckwheat noodles in a light, icy broth with brisket, an apple slice, julienne cucumbers, and daikon slices with hot mustard and vinegar on the side. It came with a bunch of above average kimchee dishes. Everything was tasty. Prices here are average, but with the quality of service, I'm definitely going back. read more

Yakiniku - grill your own. They get mad if you waste so make sure that you tell them how much meat you want each time. They will charge you extra if there is leftover. Food is so good but the service is probably the worst that I have ever had! Brisket is the best. They were eating dinner as we were eating dinner and we asked for more meat and they said that we needed to wait till they were done eating dinner. We came in at 9pm and around 10 they told us that they were closing so pretty much telling us to get the f*** out of there. The wife of the owner is probably the worst one of them all and the fat one with a lot of makeup is probably the second. The nicest one is the thin one with glasses. She is the best. After dinner we spoke to the owner and he said that if we tip more that we will get better service. Isn't that the contrary to how tipping is earned?! Normally you get tip by giving good service. This place is a hole-in-the-wall kind of feel, located next to the postal office and Richie's diner. Parking is always limited here, but despite the parking and shady location, the food here is really good!! The Yakiniku is buffet style and there's about 12 different meat choices, which are all accompanied by sides dishes. Such as, Kimchee, bean sprouts, spinach, and mixed veggies. For dinner prices the buffet is $22ish per person and I think lunch is a bit cheaper. They also have entrees and sides you can buy separately if buffets aren't your thing. The entree foods are decent, but I would suggest only coming here for the buffet. That's worth the money!! The one star deduction is due to service. The aunties there are not very attentive and it takes a lot of hand raising and excuses mes to get their attention. Despite the below par service I think I will be coming back because the buffet was good and cheap! A great place for groups on a budget! Never again will we return to this restaurant. Food was edible but after this experience, not so sure anymore. As we concluded our dinner, that lady that always stays by the register walks by our table and says something to the man thats always there. Both looked towards our table. As our payment was ready to be picked up, lady comes by and tells us "YOU WASTE FOOD, NEXT TIME TELL MY WAITRESS YOU CANT FINISH IT" while looking at a SMALL bowl of cooked meat and maybe FOUR uncooked thinly sliced brisket. First of all, we had no control of the portions, it was given to us. If you make it an all you can eat, train your waitress her portions. Second, she wants us to tell her we cant finish it after the meat has been on our table? No answer was given when we asked her if she was going to put it back with the rest of the uncooked meat she'll serve her customers. Bring one of your Korean friends with you if you want to receive any semblance of customer service. The waitresses will openly talk about your Chinese looking friends which your Korean friends will get a kick out of. Not to try to justify their blatant racism, but they don't do it out of malice plus they're not going to change so it's just something you'll have to get over. The meat selection is pretty extensive, and the quality of the meat is way higher than Shit-dorak. The banchan are pretty good too, especially the potatoes. This is one of only two places I know that makes the extra effort to make tiny foil cups to grill the garlic in, resulting in absolutely crispy and delicious deep fried goodness. One negative, the waitress will automatically add tip to the bill, so don't take the price posted on the sign as how much you think you're going to end up paying. Taking into account the fact that you get a huge hunk of beef fat to oil the grill and can pig out on as much meat as you want though, this is something I'm sure most people are willing to overlook. read more

And if you consume mass quantities of sashimi, squid, carpaccio, tartare, you'll not only love this dish but you will become a, "Yu-ke" regular. I am one now. I am imploring, begging all of you daring diners to try this dish. It is a party in your mouth and as I have said before, it's one of those dishes that makes my eyes roll back in my head. Dare to order it, please!!! Tongue love. The owner said that not many people eat raw beef so he didn't feature it on the menu, instead opting to place the raw seasoned beef atop a mound of veggies and rice in a stone pot to cook as the diner eats. Not for me. Once you taste it cold, you'll never look at your butcher the same way again. He did say that everyone who tried it becomes a loyal fan and orders it every time they come. I vote for that! It is not any more daring to eat this than it is to down mounds of poke or sashimi. Yu-ke is a hand sliced, premium quality, almost frozen, gently seasoned, 1/2 lb. of beef. It is not ground, no, it is hand minced. Tender, melt in your mouth cold, sweet beef, topped off with an egg yolk. No restaurant worth their reputation would ever serve this dish with inferior or old beef or egg. This dish is only a success if both items is impeccably fresh. You'd either be able to tell the difference when you taste it, or you'd be sick as a mommy for hours after. And it was deliciously fresh both times I ate it. I'm going back for more later this week, for sure. The meat is served in a little mound with sliced carrots, apples, and cucumbers surrounding the edge of the plate, meant to be eaten with the raw beef. I usually use their traditional and beautiful long handled metal spoon and use my silver chopsticks to push a mouthful of meat and condiments onto it and pop it into my anxious pie hole. The metal spoon keeps it especially cold and my silver chopsticks make me feel rich, mind you, it M-A-K-Es me feel rich, cuz I'm not. I do have a silver spoon too but it is hand hewn and too shallow to even scoop a decent mouthful of soup so I use the one the restaurant provides. I know the owner uses these metal spoons to save on the waste but I'm absolutely sure that if he converted from bamboo to stainless steel chopsticks that he would have a high level of theft to contend with. By the way, you can buy stainless chopsticks at Palama Supermarket, in their sundries section. In ancient Korea, the kings would use sterling silver because poisoned or tainted foods cause the chopsticks and spoons to turn black. Good reason then but for now, it just keeps my cold food, cold! Han Yang serves this dish with hot rice but I like to eat it along side naeng myun, a cold buckwheat noodle dish that is served so cold that ice is floating in the broth. Oh, and yes, the Yu-ke is so cold that it is frozen in the middle. Typically it defrosts as you work your way around the edge to the center. All the while that raw yolk that you pierced before indulging, clings tightly to icy meat and actually solidifies in places, making the yolk sort of granulated beads of yellow goodness. Now some restaurants add a spoon of pine nuts on the dish that adds a silkiness to the meat without being greasy or slimy. Han Yang does not but the seasoning is of the utmost quality that this dish doesn't miss it. And this dish doesn't miss. Finally, the cost of a little lump of this dish usually goes for 19.-20.00 in most restaurants, if they even have the dish. But here, it is a worthwhile 13.00. I am asking, no begging you to try it. But leave a little left for this old dog! read more

I thought we had to order the buffet but it was really nice to know we could order off the menu also. The choices were very good to choose from and you could mix and match just about everything you wanted. I selected the kalbi and fish Jun. It came with seaweed soup and an array of side dishes which we were able to get replenished about 3 times for certain ones. The seaweed soup as well as the side dishes alone we're enough to get full on with hot rice but when the main entree arrived I was blown away at how much food it was on the platter. The taste was very very exquisite and I had to order me another bowl of rice which by the way did not cost extra. The best part about it was the price. It was just $10 or a little over 10. I love that so much that I'm going to bring my sister my brother my sister's husband and a good friend of mine here to eat in about 4 more days. I can't wait. read more

No silly frills, perfect spot for lunch with the gang. They serve you right away...no long wait here. I've always wanted to try stone Bi Bim Bop and I loved it. This place is not all that great but not that bad either. Nothing to brag about or celebrate for. It's good if you just want to eat Korean AYCE and not wait in line to be seated. Convenient, fast and easy to get a table/seat here! They have a great selection of meats to choose from - beef tongue, kalbi, chicken, pork belly, etc. However, the sides could be better. On the plus side, you can do BYOB. But, you'll just have to pay a cork fee per person. It was a bit hard to spot in the beginning because it's hidden behind a few hole in the wall spots and the bars, right in the heart of Kalihi. When finding parking, I got lucky a few times. My mother had taken me to Han Yang as a child for lunch and dinner when we had extra money to spend. During the early 80's, it was one of the few real Korean restaurants around Hawaii - let alone Kalihi. This was before Yummy's, Tasty's and all those Korean fast food joints came along. I always remembered that I loved their chi gaes and they used to serve this turnip soup that I loved as a child. Fast forward to now...As an adult I came back here to try the food again. The place looks the same and so do the booths. That doesn't bother me. It has an old school familiar feel to it and it's comforting. The only difference is that they expanded and took over the business to the right of it, so it looks bigger than it did before. There is the regular menu that they always had, and now they have all you can eat yakiniku, which is pretty yummy and reasonably priced. There is kali-bi, boneless kali-bi, chicken, and even beef tongue and tripe for the adventurous. The ban chan was generous and tasty and the meats were tasty and seasoned well. They also give you the usual raw garlic to grill with your meats and a bowl of rice. Service was ok, but the lady wasn't that smiley. I figure it's a Korean restaurant and they are all angry so I won't dock stars for that. read more

I'm writing this review for my mother. My mom had ordered the Kalbi tang which its suppose to have kalbi in the soup. When my moms food came out she noticed the meat in the soup was NOT kalbi but more like stew meat. She told the waitress hey your menu said kalbi tang but no kalbi? and they re charging around $14.99 i believe? Anyways the waitress told my mom " do you know how expensive kalbi is?" Like really? if you have on the menu Kalbi Tang and charging that much for it and instead put stew meat?..isnt that fraud or something?? Han Yang is located in the depths of Kalihi's food centers, just a stone's throw from the post office, and flanked by too many Korean bars to count. We selected it based on a generally positive set of reviews on Yelp! and it turned out to be just what we expected: not bad, pretty good. The restaurant is big, old, a little dingy, and filled with thumping bass from the music at the Korean bar next door, bringing to mind images of grandpas and uncles drinking the night away with Korean aunties with loud voices and dresses that are too young. With that thought, we braved this restaurant with more seats than I can imagine being filled at any given time (it's a huge, 70+ seat restaurant). It's a little dirty, a little old, and a little dank, but the food was good enough for me to say I'll be back in the future. Prices are what you'd expect, ranging from about $7 to nearly $20. We had the deep-fried mandoo, kimchee chigae, and some other stuff. Notably, the kimchee chigae is super sour and super rich, and I was a fan of it. If you're in the Kalihi area and want to get some legit Korean food without accidentally wandering into a drinky bar, look for Han Yang - it's safe. I promise. read more

Came here with some close friends last month. Super casual place - more for you and a group of your t-shirt wearing friends, not necessarily for you on your first hot date. Located in Kalihi near Farrington High: Yakiniku buffet - $19.99 per person. Restaurant was not very busy, but the parking in this little shopping area can be. Must-haves: beef tongue, garlic kobe meat, and beef brisket (at least that's what my friends usually get, and they definitely got those right!). Beef brisket plate has a lot on it! But it doesn't really matter that the other meat plates don't have as much, since it's buffet and you can always order more. They freshly slice the meat up front by the cashier. Good old Korean restaurant vegetables served in the little bowls, and to be super stereotypical - with the good old Korean restaurant service. If you're looking for the service to fake-smile at you when they're busy and irritated with you, don't expect it here. Do not come, and for that, miss out on deliciousness. Also note - I'm generally not a fan of yakiniku, but this place was worth it. Recommend if you're not too cool to hang out in Kalihi. read more

It's pretty hard to make an AYCE BBQ in Hawaii. The place wasn't really busy, but the waitress didn't come to our table or give us any minimum good service. Luchtime Yakiniku makes for a very sensory experience as the aroma will permeate your clothing even if you arent having any! The place needs better ventilation...better decor, and a few other things too. Service was a bit slow for our group. Took our 1 hr celebration and turned it into a 2 hr ordeal. I ordered the Han Yang Special since it offered everything. I've been going to Han Yang for at least 14 years, they've gone through at least one owner change. It used to be really good and our go to family Korean restaurant, but since the change in ownership, there are many other Korean restaurants I'd rather go to. I had family in town so I was summoned back to the hood. My favorite Korean food is kal bi, especially the "big boned" kal bi (rather than the thin 3 bone piece). I've tried it every where (Sorabol, Dong Yang, So Gong Dong, and my fav O-Bok). I was appalled when I was served this "boneless kal bi" which was NOT a short rib cut. It was lean and dry, totally lacking the flavorful and fatty quality of kal bi. My cousin who's a butcher, said that other Korean restaurants are doing this too! Other things we ordered: - Chicken, dry, tasteless - Spicy pork, hard, over cooked, very thin - Chop chae, very tasty! My favorite dish of the night. IMHO, serving grilled meats on a sizzling plate is over rated. It just results in over cooked food. I was pleasantly pleased. The food was good- the meats and seasonings seemed to be good quality and taste. The portions were huge!! We started with the garlic Kobe, Korean kalbi, pork belly and beef tongue. The Kobe is something we both thought wasn't amazing but the other choices were great! Loved the tongue the best. We followed it up with a request for brisket and BBQ chicken and weren't disappointed. The brisket melted in my mouth.The banchan was 4 kinds, all were good quality. We asked for a refill on 3/4 and they came out with 4- one was different than the first round. Served with lettuce and rice. The soup that was supposed to come with the meal never came out but we were full anyway. Service was decent. We had to flag down the servers and ask for things a few times but hey, it's a Korean restaurant- a culture that's not notably customer oriented. Nevertheless, it was a good meal for the price and we were there for about 2 hours, never felt rushed to leave. We did the BYOB thing and got beers from the store on the corner. Pros: Pretty good meat for 19.99 eat all you can, unlim rice and sides, lots of parking, lots of space so probably no waiting. Cons: Not very good service, slightly small grill I came here the other night with some friends, and was warned ahead by one of them that it has terrible service so don't expect much. Honestly, it wasn't THAT bad as they said; ive had much worse at some other Korean eateries. We were one of the few customers there but whenever we needed something, we'd just raise our hand and they would bring us whatever we needed. (and thats pretty good considering how one of the top five restaurants -- as rated by yelp -- had waiters that ignored us often and even rushed us out of the store) Of course, the most important part was whether the food was good. Although some meats didn't taste that good (such as the kalbi), other meats (such as the beef tongue and pork belly) were quite tasty. Usually at Yakiniku places I only use the salt and oil sauce for my meats, but this place has their own special sauce which I actually liked. As others commented, you will have to pay extra if you leave any extra meat, so if you want another plate but can't eat a lot, just let them know that you want a small plate. As a waiter, I understand that tip pretty much is our rent, tuition, etc. and as long as we didn't get terrible service (which we didn't), I believe 15% is a perfectly fine amount to tack on (at least it saves me the time and trouble of calculating). Overall, if you're looking for decent eat all you can yakiniku for about $25 a head without heading into town, I'd say this is a pretty good choice. With this many pros, i'd give the place 4 stars. Would come again another time. Edit: I forgot to mention, their grill is sort of small so it's hard to seat a party of more than 4 and cook food fast enough to satisfy everyone. The servers looked like they hated their job. They don't even check up on you and you're automatically forced to pay 15% tip which I think they don't even deserve. This place shares a parking lot with other small mom and pop stores. This is a go to spot for us whenever we want an all you can eat yakiniku. For about $22, which includes gratuity, you can get many different choices of meat. Theres kalibi, chicken, pork belly (our favorite), tripe, and much more. Beside the meat they give you panchan (side dishes) which is also unlimited. You can also ask for korean miso and garlic for your meats. Rice and soup is also included. Another plus about this place is its B.Y.O.B. Don't have alcohol, well don't worry about that they also sell soju with different flavors and beer. read more

Left side of the restaurant is where you can order plate lunches, etc, right side is yakiniku and All you can eat for $25. Place is just like Sikdorak but with more meat options. ***You can only order 4 dif types of meat at a time!!! Only did 2 rounds bc it was so filling! But I've tried tongue, mountain tripe, brisket, korean kalbi, and tenderloin. All the food was delicious, and some were seasoned! Sauces are just like Sikdorak too except the darker sauce is sweeter. Workers are nice, although you have to wave or flag them down if you need something. Oh, and they have multiple sides or "banchan" as well. I like their grill better than Sikdoraks. I've been here only once, but after having opted for their all you can eat Korean yakiniku option for $19.99 (they have a separate section where you can order entrees), I'll definitely be back! They have a great selection of meats you can order, many of which are tender (my favorites were the brisket and beef tongue). Other meats not on the buffet option, including ribeye, are also available. They provide a wide variety of small platters of vegetables. The sauce provided to dip the meats in is very tasty and sweet. The servers came to switch out the grill very often. And they also serve hite beer and soju. Everything is pretty clean, and the place can get packed (I went on a Friday night), so I recommend reservations during this time. I only wish they'd refill the water more often without me having to call attention to it. Other than that, no major complaints so far. My new favorite yaniniku place! $22.99 per person if you decide to eat on the buffet side. If not they have entrees that they serve on the other side. My boyfriend and I ate on the buffet side last night and were the only table inside. There were 2 servers and let me say... the service was AWEFUL. They didn't want to help us at all. They only came by once and that was to take our meat order. We ate with empty water glasses the whole night and our grill was black and burnt to a crisp. BUT... the food and sauce was so good that we didn't even care about the bad service. We will continue to go here if the food continues to taste amazing. Han Yang was the spot this time and it didn't disappoint! 14 different meat including the good stuff like brisket, mountain tripe, kal beeee, and of course my favorite the tongue of the bull. I mention there cause at some places they charge a bit more for certain meat selections. Anywho, the price is $22.95 per. The only thing is... You gotta buy the lettuce as a side. What a fantastic way to begin 2018-a family luncheon at Han Yang! My aunt brought me here a few years ago and was excited to share it with my husband's family. Since we had a party of 14 for New Year's Day I called a week in advance and was pleased to learn they would be more than happy to accommodate us. *Food: Combos, soup and seafood fried rice were ordered. The seafood rice was massive and so delicious that it was shared amongst a few of us. My sister-in-law had a Cold noodle soup (I apologize for not remembering which one) which she said was tasty: the bowl was empty. Good sign! Meat jun, bbq chicken, fried mandoo w/sauce, fish jun, and spicy pork were all delicious, as well. I'm a sucker for spicy pork and I'm spoiled now. The sauce was not overly hot yet extremely flavorful with just enough char. The local style kalbi is the ONLY reason I am removing a star from my review because those who ordered it were a little disappointed by the amount of meat and sinew on the bones. Solution: order the Boneless Kalbi! I'm certain that's the way to go because the flavor would be there with more meat! LOL. I would pay the extra $ for it. Lest we not forget the banchan which was fresh, authentically flavored and we all had enough left over to take home--seriously that good. Oh, and the prices? Does it even matter when the food is so good? You could go to a Korean bbq chain restaurant and get mediocre food for the same price or a couple bucks less. Whatever's, I hardly come here so why not patronize them tonight. The food wasn't so bad. As for the service, they took our order immediately. They loaded the cheaper cuts of meat like the spicy pork and barbecue beef. The beef tongue was a small portion along with the garlic steak. The sides were good and they refill if you ask. We are not big eaters, so that's all we had. My child ate half his rice and maybe 10 pieces of meat and he was done. The food was good, but I am so critical on hospitality and the attitudes of the wait help. I felt like after our initial order, I saw our waitresses 2 times to refill our waters and that was it. They changed the grill once. Not friendly at all. I didn't know if they spoke any English, until I went up to pay. Not only did they charge my son the full price, she said in English that she already added her tip of 18%. What the hell!! I know places that Do that with parties of 6 or more, but please warn your customers if you are going to steal from them like they did. Remember now, tips are gratuities and by law is not required! To just add on whatever you want without the customers approval is THEFT!!! I am not one to make a scene, but trust me when I say that I will never ever step foot in this place again and be a victim of THEFT! What makes Han Yang unique is that they serve a good variety of veggie dishes with your meal. My favorite dish here is the stone pot meat with veggies. After mixing the raw egg with the kochu jang sauce, the taste of the burnt rice on the bottom of the pot is just terrific. read more

We've had 3 birthday parties at Han Yang in the past 3 months. Its become the defacto location for the gang to get together to celebrate. First, the price is right. The food is really good. They only dish we didn't like was the chicken. All the steak and pork meats were good. The wait staff is on it too. In a big group we're grilling a lot of meat and they're always around to change out grills and replace side dishes. The best part is its BYOB. We got the owner to take a couple of shots of shoju with us. I think this place is great for casual and large group dining. Its definitely not a date night kind of place. The location is a little bit sketchy, but if it really scares you that much then you probably shouldn't ever leave the house, its really not that bad. read more

Been a customer of Han Yang for over 25 years. Don't get here very often as it is in Kalihi and we don't really plan to go to Kalihi for dinner bery often. But today, Kalihi was a good midpoint to meet for lunch and as it was another cold, wet day, I was craving soup again. I fell back to a favorite of mine, the crab stew. I get it medium spicy which is just about right for me. Spicy enought to give it a kick but not enought to have me coughing. With all the soft tofu stew I have been eating latey Ive been missing soups with more veggies in them. This crab soup had won bok, green onions, daikon,and some parsly which I removed. The broth was really flavorful. No hint of miso taste. I like miso soups but sometime I like my soups without it. This crab soup definetily was better without. When I was done there was nothing left of it. The banchan was good. Nothing too spectacular. Maybe cause it was lunch, not sure. There was bean sprouts, kim chee, shoyu/sugar potatos, mac salad, and their green veg(broccolli sprouts?). My wife had the vegetable soft tofu soup. She really liked it. It had vegetables in it too. Kind of reminds us of Bul Go Gi that was in Waipahu. Really miss that place. They had great kalbi too. I was surprised she opted for the vegtable soup and not the seafood. I don't know if the seafood one would have vegetables or not. She got hers medium spicy and is usually what she can handle but they used chili oil which put over the top for her. SHe just skimmed some of the oil off with a napkin and all was good. We also got a side order of the kalbi(korean style). The kalbi had a really good flavor. The meat was also cooked perfectly and when they bring it out on that sizzling platter it just makes your mouth water. We saved some so we could take some home for the boys but really wanted to pig olut and eat it all. While we were eating we saw that they also do all-you-can-eat Yakiniku for lunch and dinner. We always saw this place, but never checked it out. We walked in and the quickly sat us. They brought our rice, sides, and water then asked us what we would like to order. We informed the person service us that it was our first time so feel free to recommend. She told us that she will bring 4 meats. She brought the meat over, started to heat our girl and put the meat on. They gave us just enough meat for the entire meal. Although the environment is old and as we finished our meal the flies started to appear, overall we thought it was good for $19.99 per person. read more

Food is actually good/tasty but the service or the employees in general need to do and be better. My cousin and 2 friends went there for $19.99 ayce and since they knew tip was included they paid in cash and paid in full altogether. They remember exactly what was given. A while after, as they were talking and hanging outside in the parking lot (as all young adults do) one of the female servers came outside and claimed they were short $10. They went back inside and told them exactly how much they paid and they saw another lady waving 2 five dollar bills (wonder where she got it?) Less than 2 weeks later...Today, I had lunch with my cousin, aunty (his mom), and 3 ladies that speak their native tongue (my mom, her mom, and grandma's sister ) I understood practically everything they're saying and when we got there, one of the ladies asked, "who's Grandson is this?" So we ordered, ate, and also took food to go. At the end of our meal and after every thing was paid for, my mother mentioned what happened and the lady (female owner) feigned ignorance and acted like that couldn't have happened when my cousin remembers she was there. My mom went back in and asked for a box for the 4 take out plates and because she knew her employees did them wrong, all she could say was, we have the lowest prices in Hawai'i. This was actually my family's go to spot for Korean food when I was growing up. It's actually been close to 20 years since I I've been here. So anyway my friends and I were looking for another all-you-can-eat yakiniku place and my friend's mom suggested Han Yang. It's $19.99 for a choice of any of 15 types of meat, Rice and soup are also included. The quality of food was as I would expect for this type of meal, the salted and garlic meat options were tasty as well. Everyone in our party enjoyed their meal and we really got our fill. Service was actually surprisingly attentive. I will most likely be back. read more

Parking was relatively easy, no wait to get seated, and the restaurant was cleaner than expected. We had kalbi, short ribs, pork, spicy pork, and numerous varieties.
