OK food. Between the group, we had brisket (a little dry), ribs (pretty good flavor but really small) and turkey (the best of the bunch - flavorful and moist with the right amount of smoke). The sides were a letdown. The fries and onion rings were straight out of a bag. The okra was a nice serving size but nothing special in flavor. The side salad was OK. The prices here are good for the serving size if you get the lunch special (same pricing as the kid's plate). The full serving prices are a bit high IMO. oooohhhh.....I am so full! Just got home from Hammond's and ouch, my tummy hurts. But in a good way! We have been studying the Texas Monthly and D Magazine Best BBQ spots in Texas. And how else do you recover from St. Patty's Day on Greenville but to eat fatty, salty, BBQ. So here we are, Sunday morning and I get the bright idea to take a road trip. Now keep in mind, from Uptown (the State and Allen neighborhood to be exact) it takes a good 1 hr and 20 mins to get to Glen Rose. So grab a roadie and hold on tight! This place is open Sundays and has a decent crowd. The prices are good and the portions are large. I got the small chopped beef sandwich and the bf go the 3 meat plate with ribs, sausage, turkey and two sides. I have to say, after reading some of the review about the ribs in particular I was concerned. But the meat was great! I didn't try the ribs or the turkey but the bf tried both and gobbled them up. I got a plate with brisket and sausage. The brisket was pretty good but I wasn't really impressed with the sausage at all. The sides weren't impressive but the cobbler was pretty tasty. There aren't too many places to eat in Glen Rose so if you're in the area I'd recommend coming just because of the lack of other dining options. Being a barbecue lover and having passed this place on the way to Dinosaur Valley State Park, we just had to try it. We also read all the reviews here on Yelp before going and I have to say that they all bring something to the table when it comes to this place. The moment you walk in it smells like a BBQ joint. Smokey and meaty (be aware that if you buy a shirt or a hat that this smell comes with you....... my hat still smells of it a week later). There were four of us and we all had slightly different sides with our meals which were decent for the most part. I had potato salad and onion rings..... The potato salad was just basic and Ok but the onion rings were pretty good. They had a cornmeal crust on them but the were big and crunchy with a nice ring of onion on the inside. The mains were pretty good. I got ribs and chopped brisket. While the ribs were good, they really seemed a bit basic and did not really stand out as anything special. The brisket on the other hand was great. They did a great job with the beef and they make a really good sauce too that goes really well with it. They do it so well that I actually wonder why they do not do beef ribs too since Texas is supposed to be the BBQ beef capital of the US. Anyway. I gave it three stars because they have some good highs (beef and sauce) and they have a few lows but the lows would not be enough to stop me from going again. My brother and I recently stopped at Hammonds with his kids on a recent day trip down to Dinosaur Valley State Park. Both of us agreed completely that this was some of the best BBQ we've had in a while. My brother ordered the ribs. Although they tasted great he said that the portion size was a bit small and he left hungry. Normally we'll share BBQ if we think it's good enough, but I'm not a rib person so I can't vouch for them. He ordered Pinto Beans and seemed to like them as well. I ordered a 2 meat platter with hot links and brisket with green beans and potato salad. I can honestly say that both meats were off-the-hook good. The hot links were perfectly cooked and incredibly soft; the spice isn't overwhelming, but it definitely "sneaks up" on you at the very end as you swallow! The brisket was truly some of the best I've ever had. It literally crumbled when I stuck it with my fork and was incredible tender and full of flavor. The amount of meat that I received for $11.25 was incredible and I definitely DID NOT leave hungry...lol. If I'd known my brother was still hungry I had more than enough to share with him. The sides were good. Although not the best I've ever had they were complimented the meal very well. But make no mistake, the quality and quantity of the meat more than makes up for any minor shortcomings in this department. Service as excellent and polite. Although nearly empty when we walked in around 11:30am, Hammonds was nearly packed by the time we finished. This is clearly a local favorite and I would highly recommend it. We'll definitely be back next time we venture down toward Glen Rose. I just wish the dinosaur tracks were half as good as the BBQ. But that's another review in itself. read more

This has got to be one of the BBQ places I had eaten in Texas. We happen to be driving through Glen Rose, on our way back home, and decided to have some lunch. And up ahead was Hammonds BBQ. We decided 'why not'. There was nothing fancy here that ...Rustic interior, cheerful waitress and good Ol' BBQ. I decided to have the pork rib platter and complained that it only came with one side. I chose fried okra. My husband had the trio of meat (brisket, turkey and sausage) with two sides (potato salad and green beans). There is a multitude of sides in which you can order. When my ribs showed up, I could plainly see why I only had one side with this plate. The ribs (not baby back) were huge and I had 5 of them on the plate. They were tender, fall off the bone deliciousness!!!!!! The BBQ sauce was great as well. The fried okra was a generous size. More than I could eat! It was fried to perfection. I had a hard time eating all that I ordered and had to leave some of the okra behind. My husband's turkey, brisket and sausage were just as good. Yes, I tried a bite of everything just in case I missed something that I should have ordered. The meat was generous in proportion compared to other BBQ places we have visited. The meat was good and smoky, tender, moist and left you wanting more even though you have no room left. Only one complaint! We were so full that we had no room for dessert. Worst bbq ever. Husband ordered the brisket and the waitress asked "do you want it lean or fatty?" Didn't know that was an option. Gross, just plain gross. I decided to have a burger and when I told the waitress I would like it cooked medium she stated "our burgers are premade and brought in, they're all well done." We went to Hammomds last Sunday and it was pretty good BBQ. Not the best but tasty. Our waitress was great and kept our iced tea filled, even brought me more ice without me needing to ask. We had a very rude group of jerks sitting next to us who treated the poor waitress poorly so we left her a big tip since she kept her cool with the awful family. There is nothing bad I have ever expierenced here. I love the ribs and loaded baked patatoes. This is my grandpas favorite place!! We eat here every time I come to glen rose. My grandparents are friends with the manager and he's a very nice man. The food is amazing, but my favorite is the pie. I love coconut but buttermilk is my favorite. I love the cups they use for glasses and the ones they use for the barbecue sauce. The bathrooms are very clean and are well decorated. My favorite thing about that restraunt is the decorations, it's so authentic and western. The service is outstanding you never have to call up a waiter, or ask for a refill. The worst ribs I've ever gotten. I really should have sent back. They were tough and had a old meat flavor. The potato salad was good, and my husband said the brisket was good. Great find in a small town! We were staying in a vacation rental in Glen Rose and our hosts recommended Hammond's and we're so glad they did! The hot link and brisket were cooked perfectly and the loaded baked potatoes were more than enough to fill you up! Service was a little slow, but it was busy and they were down a server. This place is outstand serving real Texas BBQ. The ribs are huge and smoked to perfection. I ordered the Rib Basket which comes with one side. The four ribs were more than a normal person's appetite can handle but the meat was so good I couldn't stop eating. My wife and daughter ordered the child's plate which was plenty for a person with a normal appetite. Anyone can order the child's plates. The brisket and sausage which my wife and daughter ordered is also excellent. The huge onion rings and fried okra sides are also wonderful. Delicious turkey, average beans, bread was toasted only on one side- something different. Glad it didn't have any sauce on top. Wished it was sliced thinner. Great Texas BBQ. My family shared brisket, sausage, and ribs which were all good. I typically enjoy a little bit more flavor in the rub than this joint had, but everything was cooked to perfection. I loved the sauce, which was pretty typical of a Texas BBQ joint and served warm. We got green beans, French fries, and fried Okra and all were great as well. Peach cobbler was good, but not the best- needs more flavor/spice in the crusty parts for my taste. We appreciated the blue bell ice cream which should be required on top of every cobbler. If you start out for Glenrose hungry, you will be starving by the time you get there. Truly a Saturday afternoon roadtrip. Part of the magic of Hammonds is just getting there. I had the brisket plate with okra and potato salad . The brisket had a good flavor and came with a small jar of sauce that was really good. The beef however, was a little tough and probably could have used another half hour in the cooker. The better half had the rib plate and they were great. A couple of pieces of homemade pie and we were on the road. All in all a fun afternoon, the barbecue was passable, as good or better easily found in the Fort Worth/Mid Cities area, but a fun run to Glenrose. read more

Really good BBQ served here. My wife and I shared a 3 meat plate and an order of onion rings. The brisket was juicy, smokey, and flavorful. The sausage was also juicy, smokey, and flavorful. The 3rd meat we had was the hot link. It was very mild in the spicy department but it was dang tasty. The BBQ sauce has good flavor with a little sweetness to it. The service was really nice and quick. It was pretty costly for us sharing a plate and our son getting child's plate, but it was good. The parking lot was interesting to navigate.
