This is where the positives end. Like many businesses around the nation, they have serious problems hiring and retaining decent employees. Senior level management is often called upon to serve meals! The food they serve is often barely edible, and, despite some residents wanting something else, dinner hour is often forcibly ended by the wait staff at 6PM because they want to go home, and the sooner things are cleaned up the sooner they can leave. They simply throw out any remaining unserved food and empty the coffee urns, without regard for the residents. Some residents arrive for dinner around 4:30PM because they know that the entree featured in the distributed menus, often runs out quickly, forcing those who arrive a little later (like 5:15) to be relegated to a cold sandwich. The activities are poor. The exercise class consists of a video that they play in a large room, that was filmed sometime in the 1960's or 70's; no in-person exercise class. They offer transportation for the residents to local stops such as supermarkets, but only for those who can get on and off the van unassisted. The vast majority of the residents at this facility are over 80 years old (many over 90), and most use assistive devices such as walkers. They may need another person to assist them getting on and off the van - but this is not permitted. This is an inappropriate and discriminatory activity that is quite insulting and depressing for the residents. Conversation with leadership typically results in politically correct lip service, with no meaningful action. If you need an assisted living facility in the Hamden, CT area, you would be well advised to look elsewhere.

I came here as a respite. My family hadn't known that the age group was the late 80s to 90s. Mostly…read moreresidents with walkers and "homebound". Frequent ambulance services due to the age of the population. The food service runs out of food presented on the menu. By dinner time the kitchen is sometimes out of the meal you wanted and the desserts are substituted by dinner. There are no special diets because all food is frozen. The soup comes from a famous chain but has high salt content. There are daily calendars posted for the day's events that are often canceled or moved to another day. The staff is wonderful, hard-working, and friendly. Atria does the best it can. Corporate needs to read these reviews and take action.

After…read morenine weeks, I can only say their service has declined markedly since we hired them in 2016 to look after our father in similar circumstances. Our biggest gripes are the awful scheduling services, and the very gruff, uncaring women who answer their phones. 90% of my phone calls to the central number leave me feeling the person answering the phone resents being bothered with my questions. Although the individual aides and nurses, have been good, our problem is the complete lack of any consistency in scheduling. Numerous times during these 2+ months, aide visits have been changed on the day of arrival minute. We never receive any advance information about nursing visits except for the planned days of visits. No expected windows of time for their visits are ever offered. We have complained about this for six weeks in a row, and the receptionists who answered the phones simply could not care less. The case manager nurse who took over for my mom several weeks ago has never been back. And with all the nurses, it is extremely burdensome when they never tell us an expected time of arrival, so we have to wait throughout the day wondering whether they will come at 9:00 am or 2:00 pm. It makes it impossible to leave home on these days to run errands, take a care-taking break, or anything. It is an unneeded stress placed on family that could be solved with simple professionalism of informing us of a time window for arrival. I agree with a few other reviewers here that while the care itself is not bad, the awful lack of communication is a problem that Masonicare neither cares about nor seems interested in solving. They seem clueless on what family caretakers are going through.
